    Pentatonix bohemian rhapsody insights
. So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on TH-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also when Brian Mays heard it..he posted it on his web site with the word "enjoy"

The other and probably more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to the genius of Queen by putting a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player.

Brian May posted this version on his social media saying, "enjoy". Can't get a better endorsement than a member of Queen giving the nod of approval. Lol

The best remake of this song with or without instruments. PTX spent five years working on this off and on to make sure they did it right.
Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.
The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC!
Brian May the lead guitarist of Queen posted this to his social media accounts telling his followers to 'Enjoy' I think that was an endorsement.
You really need to use headphones to get the best listening experience.

You didn't appear to catch that Avi Kaplan, PTX's original bass who is in this video, was the second bass in Home Free's "Ring Of Fire", as Tim said in the outro. Avi's been good friends with Tim for years and they had a great time doing the Johnny Cash collaboration together.

Great reaction! Hallelujah is probably where you want to go next. After that, oh so many options. If you want absolutely stunning 5 part harmonies try "Mad World", "My Heart With You", or "Run to You" (an original). If you want a SUPER upbeat, get hyped song try "Sing" or "I Rise" (recent original, though no video).

The members of Pentatonix, in this video:
I'm going to refer to their locations on the couch at the beginning and end, in the living room set.
On the back of the couch, from left to right, we have:
    • Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstie sings anywhere from low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun calling her an "alto soprano."
    • Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice.
    • Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" means that the actual range is greater than the nominal range. Scott's range starts in the middle of the bass range, on the low end, and extends through most of a normal tenor range on the high end. When the bass is soloing, Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line.
Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott grew up together in Arlington, Texas and formed a trio in high school which they named "The Trio." (For this reason, these three are still known to pentaholics as "the trio.") In high school, The Trio frequently performed at school functions and occasionally on local television, but when they wanted to get on _The Sing-Off_ and win a recording contract they found out that they needed at least five members, so they added a rhythm section, which brings us to the seat of the couch:
•On the left we have Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He's been classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
    • And on the right we have Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range. And you're correct. Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his TH-cam channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
    • Not in this video is Avi's replacement, Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), who joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018, depending on how you figure it. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour. You can find one here: th-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/w-d-xo.html Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. I don't believe he's at the basso profundo level yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on the high end he's near the top of a normal tenor range.

Like others have said, you are doing yourself a serious disservice for not wearing earphones while listening to Pentatonix! In this one in particular without earphones, you cannot hear that they included a tribute to the original song with how they pan the audio from one ear to the other. A lot of the bass, beatboxing and small nuances will be missed without earphones of some type.
Having said that though, I loved the reaction, your expression throughout was very amusing! These guys are just flippin amazing alien unicorns! It took them 5 years to feel ready to do this song and to do it the justice that it deserves. They are all massive Queen fans. Brian May, lead guitarist from Queen, heard this song when it came out and posted a link to his socials with the one word comment 'Enjoy!' I feel like that is giving Queen's Seal of Approval right there!
They also inserted a lot of references and easter eggs into this video in tribute to the original video - which by the way, if you haven't seen - you should probably check it out! Queen couldn't perform this song live because of all the layering they did in post! And not only can Pentatonix do this Live, but the Mitch Grassi Guitar has no need for a Megaphone. Mitch just saw it lying around the set and decided to use it to draw attention to who was doing the guitar solo part - the megaphone was not on, Mitch can do this live!
The couch is in reference to their beginning videos where they recorded themselves on various of theirs couches to post onto TH-cam after they were dropped by Sony because they didn't think that Acapella would be popular enough to sell records. It is also a tip of the hat to Wayne's World movie scene with the car and head banging to this song which brought in a whole new generation to Queen's music!
The part where Mitch is laying on the couch is in reference to Freddie's death and the members walking alongside are his coffin's Pallbearers. A lot of the visuals in here are in tribute to the original video's trippy graphics; like when they all line up and do the 'oh, oh, oh's' one after the other, and also when they line up behind Kirstie standing on the couch only to fan out behind her with their vocal parts.
The shot of the sky is in tribute to Dr. Brian May who is Queen's lead guitarist and also an astrophysicist! Each shooting star represents a member of Queen. When they all collapse onto the couch with the shot from above is a homage to the cover art of Queen's record 'Sheer Heart Attack'
Also I am pretty sure, Mitch is a reincarnation of Freddie Mercury - one...he can grow the Freddie Stash and looks so much like Freddie that it is kinda creepy - two...he can sing just as high if not higher than Freddie could - and three...Freddie died 8 months before Mitch was born!

Avi Kaplan is doing solo work these days, living out in the high country. He has the purest bass voice you could ever imagine, even including Home Free. Almost all arrangements of their classic covers is done by Kevin Olusola, the beatbox. If you don't know about him, he's also a top-rate cellist, and got noticed for a video of him "cello-boxing", shredding on his cello while beatboxing simultaneously.

As a Queen fan, even though I love Mitch's voice, I wasn't expecting him to match Freddie Mercury, and I'm glad he didn't try to mimic him, but just used his own gorgeous tenor. But I did think he was somehow lacking in emotion. Then in 2021 they did this live for their Hollywood bowl concert and, to me, Mitch is better than ever, with more depth and maturity in his voice.
