There was acapella before Pentatonix and acapella after Pentatonix came onto the scene. The difference is like night and day. Any acapella group that enjoys success today owes a huge debt of gratitude to Pentatonix for destroying the very concept of what acapella was and replacing it with endless possibilities.

Umm...ya might wanna research Home Free...11 years before PTX even formed. Also won the Sing Off and has a much more versatile beatboxer/vocal percussionist.

@@williemcdTrue Home Free was before Pentatonix, but they were just getting by until Pentatonix revitalized a cappella. They readily admit that. But with their fantastic talent, Home Free upped their game to become the great a cappella band they are today. Now Home Free , Pentatonix, and VoicePlay are rightfully dominating the a cappella scene. I enjoy each band for their own strengths. 😊

@@williemcdYes, I agree that there are aspects of each of the various a cappella groups that you can compare and contrast. However, there are reasons that Pentatonix has the most commercial success of any of the groups - by far. They’ve also had the least member turnover, their ace-in-the-hole arranger Ben Bram, and a clear business strategy that leaned them into being a pop group - which again speaks to their overall higher success. They are all very good, but I think PTX has the edge when looking at it as a balanced scorecard.

I'm glad you liked this video. There are a few a Cappella groups out there (each have their own loyal fans). Pentatonix is probably the most popular and well known. Just a little about them. They won the 3rd season of the competition show The Sing Off. They have won 3 Grammys and nominated for 4. Their rendition of Hallelujah is probably the best I have ever heard. They do covers and have their own original music.
The members are from Top to bottom: Kirstin (Kirstie) she is a mezzo soprano, Mitch is a Counter Tenor ( his range is phenomenal)Scott is the baritone (sings bass when base singer has lead), Kevin is beatboxer (also plays cello sometimes while beatboxing), and Avi is the bass (left the group in 2017, replaced by Matt)
    Sorry so long

Listen to more of them. Mitch is the higher voice man who sang the most (get Mitch-slapped), Scott is the taller blonde gentleman, Kevin is the beatboxer, Kirsti is the female and Avi is (was) the bass. He left for personal reasons and a new bass (Matt) moved into the group.
Listen to the Daft punk mix, Hallelujah, and the 90's dance mix.

A few things to note....They transformed the Acapella genre to mainstream music when they won the Sing-Off TV show in 2011 !! Today, their TH-cam channel has 21 MILLION (!) subscribers and well over 7 BILLION (!) views of their 400+/- videos !! They don't record and video that they can''t sing live in concert, which they have 3 appearances in England this month !! They've achieved many awards !!
Lastly, if you want to see them sing LIVE in concert...check out "2016 PopSpring Concert" video... which includes 4 of their original songs... AMAZING PERFORMANCE !!

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

You're charming! I'll subscribe if I see you doing more Pentatonix. As for what's next, everyone will tell you "Hallelujah" and "Daft Punk Medley" for a real demonstration of their range, solemn to EDM. But I also strongly recommend their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" or Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence". Though honestly, just close your eyes and point to somewhere on their playlist - you can't go wrong.

Oh my goodness, you have opened the door to a rabbit hole. Between the three currently reigning au capella groups (Pentatonix, Home Free and Voice Play) you have hours of the most talented music to hear. Pentatonix (PTX for short) has been around almost eleven years now with only one member change (the deep bass guy moved on). They are brilliant in their arrangements and have won three Grammy awards. You're going to be mesmerized by what they can do with a voice. There are literally hundreds of excellent pieces to choose from, but give "Hallelujah" a listen and "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies". Pure genius.

The gentleman you are so impressed with is the original bass Avi Kaplan, he left the group on good terms in 2017 ( so if you continue the PTX journey just be aware that this is the only member change, if Avi is in it it is from 2017 or earlier. If Matt is the bass it is from 2018 forward) he now has a solo career and OMG his music is amazing he is so much more than a bassline. Change on the Rise is his most popular and his latest album is the Shooter Jennings produced Floating on a Dream. I am subscribing in the hopes that you will check out Avi's music.

    • @dragonbretheren
      @dragonbretheren ปีที่แล้ว

A big part of why (early) Pentatonix had such a "full" sound despite only having 5 members is that Avi is capable of singing 2 notes simultaneously (there's a name for this that I can't recall). Whenever you hear a wind/whistle, it's usually that Avi is humming a low bass note in his throat, and simultaneously whistling a higher harmonic note through his teeth. As such, he's able to become a pseudo-6th voice.
The other big factor in their full sound is that each of them individually have insane ranges. So, for example, Scott (the blonde) usually covers the midrange baritone notes, but can also drop down to support Avi with the bass if Avi needs to do a singing bit. And Kirsten (the girl) can support Scott down in the midrange or Mitch up in the high notes.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight. - incredible beatboxing from Kevin, plus inasanely high note from Mitch
"Shallow' and "say something" - showcasing Kirsten. Plus, Kevin "celloboxes" (yes thats beatboxing WHILE playing the cello)
"Imagine" - features their well known "wall of sound". Plus, the video is extemely moving
The Prayer - more of their fantastic harmonies
"Run To You" and "My Heart With You".
And they do so well with Christmas songs - Little Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells, Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace (not technically a Christmas song, but its still a must listen)
    They also do great originals"

Welcome to PTX. Prepare to never be the same, lol. Their giant 11 year catalog of music is approximately in thirds: 1. Often upgraded and always amazing Covers, including medley's, mash-ups, and evolutions; 2. Brilliant original music, (I can't say enough, it's a damn shame acapella still has some sort of weird stigma that prevents airplay, because they could all be hits), and 3. Christmas music (they have quite the monopoly on the season with, I think, 5 dedicated Christmas albums, and at least as many original songs about Christmas). They have billions with a "B" views on TH-cam, millions of subscribers, multi-platinum albums, 3 Grammy awards, they are the only acapella group with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, plus they are on TV and in movies in various capacities, and much more. Beyond Pentatonix as a group, there is original music from Avi (the bass here, who was replaced by Matt in 2016-2017), Kirstin, Scott (the tall blonde), Mitch (the one singing Freddie's part, here, with solo work under the name Messer), Kevin (the beatboxer, tenor, & cellist), and Superfruit, (music and content by Mitch and Scott as a duo). We're happy you're here! Subbed for more reactions!

So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on TH-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.

VoicePlay is another a cappella group - they are sometimes called "the theater kids of a cappella", because they will often use in costumes, sets, makeup, lighting, etc. Several of their Halloween-themed songs use this feature. VoicePlay is actually the oldest of the big 3 a cappella groups, having performed since the mid 1990s.
Home Free is the third member of the "a cappella trifecta". They are sometimes labeled as a "country" a cappella group, but it's typecasting of a sort - any of these groups can (and do) perform music from any genre that they decide they want to, and do an outstanding job of it!
Interestingly, all 3 of the groups competed on The Sing-Off TV show - Pentatonix won in 2011, Home Free won in 2012, and VoicePlay also competed in 2012 but didn't make it to the finals.

@Millennial Meets Music I've been enjoying reaction channels ever since I first discovered Floor Jansen in 2018. I guess I've learned a thing or two about the top 10-15 artists recommended.
The reaction channel scene is sort of a redemption of music for me. When radios played Like a G6 and I Whip My Hair, passing those off as top hits, I cried. I thought maybe there was an actual Day the Music Died.
Channels like yours helped restore my hope that great music lives on! Hi Ren was life-changing, and I would have missed it except for a reaction channel! My favorite, probably for life, is Nightwish, but I look forward to new things, too.
So yes, I know a thing or two, but it's because you're on an awesome path on a mission I appreciate!

PENTATONIX is unusual in that each member is a musical Tour de Force in their own right. 5 or 6 octaves of range and the ability to tune chords that is almost otherworldly. The perfect example of that is the very end of the song. Mitch, Contratenor singing lead, does the "Ev'ry way the wind blows", lands in that note and holds it without vibrato. The other resolve the chord while Mitch holds that lead note. This is where you really have to pay close attention. Immediately after the other 4 resolve the chord Mitch tunes the chord by going up a very precise 64th of a tone. You don't hear the note change but you hear the harmonics modify as the chord comes to life. The amazing thing is that Mitch likely doesn't even know he is doing it. It is instinctive, and not really something that can be taught. It is a still and ability that is relatively common amongst Barbershop singers. You know you got it right when the "angels sing"; the harmonics create resultant notes way above the notes the voices are singing. It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end

That bass is the great Avi Kaplan.
Avi is a great Basso Profundo who is classically/operatically trained.
He was with PTX for 6 years then left and became a solo artist.
He writes his own music and lyrics for most of his work.
He had a European tour in 2022 then returned to the U.S. and Canada.
He is honorable, a bit of a recluse, has a log cabin deep in the forests and mountains to Tennessee.
Here is a short example of him doing a cover from another writer.
    th-cam.com/users/shortsGOmbO2CEPoc
Just ot give you an idea of his voice.

The bass singer here that caught your attention is named Avi Kaplan. He's left PTX since this song was released (on good terms), so you'll have to watch their older songs to get blown away by his amazing bass notes. I highly recommend their Daft Punk medley for that, and Silent Night (Live) to get a good feel for his range. You'll also get to hear Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer who did all the percussion, go ham in Daft Punk and sing in his crystal clear voice in Mary Did You Know.
I also highly recommend Light In The Hallway if you want to get wrapped up in the song. They're very good at creating a wall of sound, and I think they did it perfectly there. Plus there's no visuals to distract from it since they never made a music video for it.

    • @Xanthelei
      @Xanthelei ปีที่แล้ว

@Millennial Meets Music Yup, still 5! They did a search for a new bass singer, and Matt Sallee joined them. He's also a great bass, but it took some PTX fans (myself included, I have to admit) some time to get used to the difference in tone between his and Avi's voice. To my ear, Matt has a nice clear tone while Avi has a resonant warmth.
Matt has definitely stepped up into the group nicely imo. And Avi has done some solo stuff since leaving.

You will want to add some effects to overlay the video, like snow, or transparent text, to avoid the dreaded copyright blocking. Let’s go bestie!

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Okay, now that I've given you the history of Pentatonix, on to their rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they've always wanted to perform this song, but they were afraid they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were ready. That took five years, but it was worth the wait. They were, indeed, ready.
The audio panning that you noticed at the beginning of the song was copied directly from Queen's original release of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Yes, that was, indeed, Mitch creating the electric guitar soloes, and the megaphone had nothing to do with it; Mitch just saw the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a good prop and it's been confusing people ever since. Mitch performs this live with nothing but a microphone and it sounds the same. (And we refer to the astonished face most people make when they realize what is coming out of Mitch's mouth "being Mitch slapped." Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us, generally more than once, because Mitch is full of surprises.)
As with all Pentatonix official videos, the audio was recorded in the studio and they lip-synch in the video, but the way they lip-synch is to actually sing. This keeps them in time and together, and it means that all of their movements are genuine.
Note that in the Bismillah section Scott is switching between his bass range and his tenor range to sing with both sides of the argument (with such a small band they need every voice they can get). Scott has said that this was the hardest part of this song for him.
You're correct that this was filmed outside, on a very cold night. There's a "Behind the Scenes" video I think you'd enjoy: th-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/w-d-xo.html
The couch is moving for two reasons:
    1. After Pentatonix lost that first recording contract, many of the videos they posted to TH-cam just showed five very young people sitting together on a couch, the trio on the back of the couch and Avi and Kevin in front of them, singing their hearts out. This couch needs to move in order to take them on a trip down Memory Lane.
    2. Probably more important, this couch is substituting for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by playing a tape of it.
When the camera pans up to look at the starry night sky it's a tribute to Brian May, Queen's guitarist, who has a doctorate in Astrophysics.
The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen.
When the camera pans back down to show them all lying on the couch, it's meant to recall the cover art for Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album.
When this video came out, Brian May posted a link to it on all of his social media, with a single word comment: "Enjoy."

Welcome to the NEW acapella! Today, the 'Big Three' in this world are Pentatonix, Home Free and Voiceplay. I have a very hard time trying to pick a favorite as they are all soooo good! Home free lean a little more country & Voiceplay are a little more 'theatrical', but they ALL do different genres & styles. It's more of a 'what am I in the mood for today' kind of choice between them. Pick any song from any group, you'll never be disappointed in the level of talent they all have.

Pentatonix rented a section of road from 10PM until 6 AM to film the video and barely finished. I believe it was in the L.A. area but I'm not sure. In a few scenes you can see the predawn sky in the background. The most dangerous part was where Kirstie jumps up on the couch wearing platform shoes. To make it safer they used a very quick sequence of shots and camera angles to hide the fact she wasn't wearing the platforms probably saving a severely broken ankle.

Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole, it is lovely dark and deep! As you dive into the rabbit hole I would suggest making a Pentatonix playlist for us pentaholics to binge your videos and offer suggestions for new stuff to react to! Also, SME is RABID with their blocking of PTX videos so putting a filter overtop the video, fading the video, putting words overtop of it and/or logo's to obscure the video will definitely help keep it from getting blocked too much. Also pausing a lot helps with commentary, just rewind like 5-10 seconds after resuming from a pause to keep the flow going.
As for recommendations I would suggest their covers of 'Hallelujah', 'Daft Punk Medley', 'Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)', 'The Prayer', Any of their Evolutions (Michael Jackson, Music, Arianna Grande, NSYNC, Beyoncé, and Rhianna), '90's Dance Medley', and 'Sound of Silence'! Subbed hoping for more PTX!

  • @sglavan

Fun, right? By the way, nothing they are doing here is being overdubbed or studio-enhanced. I have seen them perform this live, and it sounds just as amazing. One of the group's key principles is that they won't record anything that they cannot perform in the same way live. Also, when Mitch does the guitar solo the megaphone is just a prop, not "creating" the sound. Look for videos of them performing this live and you will see the solo done without the prop. Pentatonix is definitely one of the premier a cappella groups around right now. If you haven't had the opportunity, check out Home Free, VoicePlay and Voctave - just a few more examples of top-notch a cappella vocals.

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC!
Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.
