    You guys have done pretty-much everything.
    however,walking through all this snow today, I was thinking the one thing I'm certain you haven't done is to turn a Lada into a snowmobile, of snow-do. I mean complete with cutting the roof off, and a bench seat, like a snowmobile.
    tracks on the back, skies in the front, the whole deal.
    That's fabulous....
    thinking of you guys all day!!

    Now that you have a proper pneumatic system in a Lada, you might want to modify the brakes to work with pressurised air as well. Like in trucks! Super easy and inexpensive to do for drum brakes!

    • @AnalogDude_
      @AnalogDude_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      that's not easy to make, truck / train brakes work in reverse.
      air pressure releases them, no air locks them.
      you need a brake pedal and system from a truck.
      some light commercial truck have a dual system for the hydraulic front disk brakes, but the backside of the system is "reversed" air.

    • @girlsdrinkfeck

      @@AnalogDude_ Actually that is only true for the parking brake. If you use the foot brake in a truck for example it will use air preassure to activate thr brakes. The air gets released when taking your foot off the brake, you can hear that. However you are correct regarding the parking brake. That is because if there is a leak or not enough air in the system the truck won't just roll away.

    • @FuckYourselfTube
      @FuckYourselfTube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnalogDude_ Exactly as Jayplexy pointed out before me. Only parking brake works in reverse, which is to stop truck from moving in case of a major leak and/or lack of air pressure in system. In its simplest form a brake pedal is just a valve which lets air in the brake cylinders. More pressure meaning more braking force.

    Airbrake effectiveness is a function of drag, which increases with the square of airspeed, double the airspeed and the drag (therefore airbrake brake effectiveness) increases 4X
    You can also increase the angle of attack of your brake and that will also increase the effectiveness of said airbrake

    The windshield is pushing air up into the bubble space created by the roof lid being open. It's the same thing as a Pick Up Truck, which gets better gas mileage and less drag, with the tail gate UP, instead of down. On a pick up truck, with the tail gate down, it creates MORE drag, as the cushion of air that was trapped in the bed, is gone. It works like an air ball bearing. Try welding up an inner frame support, and flip the hinge to the windshield, and increase the angle of deflection to 45~50 degrees. That would work better as an air brake.

    best way of doing it would probably be a big plate at the back, hinged at the top of the back window
    when down it would make your Lada a fastback
    then you pull it up until it stands upright
    that way you get downforce in addition to drag, and if it fails it just goes back to its low position instead of getting ripped off

    I'm inspired by your efforts to engineer a vehicle for maximum safety with redundant deceleration technologies!
    I also enjoyed (in another of your superb videos) your engine block anchor method for supplementary braking in the case of standard brake failure. All of these are excellent ideas! I'm so glad that automotive researchers such as yourselves are so serious about safety!
    I had a related idea that I think you may wish to investigate. In the frightening case of conventional brake failure, rather than dropping an engine block out of the rear of the vehicle, why not engineer a mechanism that would drop an engine block in front of both of the front tires? My instincts suggest to me that this method may result in a reduced stopping distance - a clear advantage from the standpoint of safety.
    Obviously there's no way to know how well this will work without experimentation and road testing.

    I know it sounds weird, but it might have been more effective if the "airbrake" opened in the opposite direction. Not only more structurally sound, but aerodynamically the induced drag from the partial vacuum behind the car would probably be as, or more effective. Think about a pickup truck with an "Airgate" or missing any tailgate. Mythbusters did an episode about it once. The area rule still applies when you aren't in an airplane.

    • @wrpaulw2063

    I'm curious why that didn't work more. I can only assume that you increased the down-force more than the stopping force. The car has too much energy built up due to its weight and low rolling resistance to be slowed that much. But I bet the downward forces we're significant if they could be measured. I think we learned more about downforce than we did air brakes. Very cool!
