!! WOW !! Man it's crazy how these guys come up with this stuff I mean things that no one has "EVER " dreamed of . they think up outstanding craftsmanship
Good thing they didn't. I'm predicting a steering loss, swerve to the side, and possibly rollover. Looks like it might be good for a slow speed wagon / tractor trailer?
Would be interesting to see dampeners fitted to the wheel and the top of the strut mounts / frame to see how much it helped with the controllability. You had some spring rate, but no dampening.
This is some of the finest entertainment. Garage 54 has the guts and skills to build hilarious stuff. The ideas in these videos coming from both the creators and viewers makes this some of the best content on TH-cam. I've been hooked since the episode about putting a huge subwoofer in the roof of a car.
Our editor was supposed to cut out that portion of the original video, but he missed it, unfortunately. TH-cam does allow editing a video that's already live, so it should disappear soon.
Engineer nerd time but, I feel like you could definitely remedy the unruly steering and jumpiness if you put in a boatload of effort and time. (I know this is a silly, fun experiment but) If you could somehow get drive to the wheel (using a few CV joints maybe?) while making the springs stationary so that they dont spin with said wheel, and add some sort of articulating reinforcement bar on the horizontal axis of the springs, connected to either end of them, to stop the spring jumping forwards and back while driving over bumps, etc. You *might* get a more controlled ride. Atleast one that hopefully wont make the steering wheel try to escape your grip. Thats my silly idea anyway. Either way, it was a fun video to watch!
If there is one thing that makes Garage 54 great compared to what we could see here in the west is how things are just tried without overthinking the safety aspects to the point that most other TH-cam channels or even full on TV studios would just scrap the bulk of ideas for being too dangerous to justify carrying through. Edit: Here is an idea for a episode: use a Lada motor as a supercharger for another Lada motor. We are always told that a engine is just a big air pump so take a engine, hook it up to the intake of a running engine, then power the pumping engine with a chain or belt from the running motor. See how much power you can get from such a combo.
Good idea, although you would need the pumping engine to have a much higher capacity (or rev much faster) to get any boost. Theoretically, double the engine capacity or double the revs would provide 1 atmosphere of boost which might be a decent test. I don't know what boost would actually be achieved after losses, but I'd like to find out!
connect a running engine's exhaust pipe to another engine's air intake source. Or connect the exhaust to the engine's own air intake source. Yeah I know the engines won't run great, but I'd rather see Garage 54 do it to their own cars, than me trying it!
Mad genius... I love it. I was expecting there to be an insane amount of axle wrap with the springs winding and unwinding under acceleration and braking. Worse yet, I think this effect would be opposite on the driver's and passenger's sides of the car. One side would tighten, and the other would compress when the torque got to the wheel hubs. At the slow speed, I guess this never happened. You should take it to a drag strip where the road is flat enough to drive a little faster. I might recommend a roll cage, too. 😲
As others have mentioned, Lets see a spring driveshaft/propshaft. Granted, finding one continuous spring long enough, and of a suitable girth would be an issue, but I think that Vlad and the G54 guys can do it. However, a spring that long under torsion could tend to sag and tangle up. The spring would need to be sleeved inside a pipe of slightly larger diameter than the spring. Meaning, the pipe secured in the tunnel to house the spring, but NOT attached to the spring. ONLY to keep the spring straight. Think like a speedometer cable. The pipe being the stationary casing, and the spring being the rotating shaft inside it. They could grease up the spring to lower friction of rubbing inside the pipe. If you want to get fancy, the pipe could be connected to the housings of both the transmission and the differential to keep the inner spring aligned. But this would require making the pipe in two sections. One that can slip snugly inside the other to simulate the way a proper driveshaft slip-yoke works. Or go the easy way, and mount the rear axle solid to eliminate that movement. Also as I have seen mentioned before, hold the rear wheels with the brake, load up the spring by feathering the clutch and giving it some throttle, then release the brake and dump the clutch at the same time. Should result in a sudden launch. But quickly followed by an equally sudden rebound causing a lurching motion. Another Idea: Spring replacing the steering shaft.
The driveshaft spins 3-4 times axle speed, so balance and flex become a HUGE issue at much lower speeds than wheel balance issues even become noticeable. This is why DOT standards specify a maximum length of driveshaft. If you need longer, must add support bearings and u-joints along the shaft in segments up to the maximum allowable length. Too long and they can suddenly fail at speed, instantly bending and flailing the undercarriage and fuel tanks, probably locking up the axle for a smoky out of control spinout-stop on the spot, then inability to move from however the laws of physics left you till a heavy duty tow arrives.
Use a garage overhead door spring. The overhead door companies buy the springs in long lengths and cut them to length. The door has them mounted on a shaft.
This video gives me an idea for a future video. They should find gigantic clock springs and rotationally link the wheels to the axle (or the drive shaft to the transmission) by springs. In such a way that when you try to accelerate the car stays put for a second while the springs wind up then the car launches like a windup toy car...If done right with braking you might be able to make an otherwise stock Lada accelerate like a dragster.
So... I saw this video once about a guy who made a bicycle that steered inversely. Handlebars left, the wheel turned right, and vice versa. He was proving something about how the mind can relearn things, but it took unlearning the original way to work. Like once he could ride the inverted steering bike, when he got on a regular bike it was really hard not to crash. so how about a car that steers opposite?..
