  • If you need to get in really close to see something on your part or tools then this TOD Toolbox is for you. In this TOD Toolbox video Mark focuses in on using loupes and other means of visual magnification to see what’s difficult to see with the naked eye.

    I've kept a magnifier in the shop for tool inspection for years, super good advice.

    Oops, phone slipped in my hand. Now I need a new coolant proof IP67 phone 😂
    I have one of those macro lenses but still prefer a loupe. Especially when inspecting parts in between operations, drops of coolant may drip down from the spindle.
    But this clothes peg style macro lens is great for making close up shots of products or tools.

    This would have helped so much with deburring some tiny parts i had to do. Now I just got to find a holder for my phone, for next time.

    Toolmakers microscopes have always been a thing for a reason. They are usually also stereo microscopes that give you depth and also usually have XY stages.

    Have inexpensive decent quality loupes stored in most of the places where having one really helps out. What I don't have is one of those ones that can free up both hands.

      I have used all sorts of visor/headband magnifiers and in my opinion the Donnegan Optivisor is the best and definitely the most comfortable. If you do buy/own a Donnegan Optivisor they make an add-on pices called the optiloupe which is worth every penny. PS if you are in the market for a Optivisor shop carefully because the prices of a optivisor vary greatly. As for the add on visor light I made my own and like my version far more that commercial ones available and besides working better the price of the parts definitely were cheaper

    A tool maker had to show me the correct way to now squint to holder jewelers loupe. You just push it up in upper eyelid first and then rest it on bottom lid. It will stay in place with squinting. I also like the Opti Visor as well. Like how to check the radius on turning inserts _ is it a #1 or #2 etc.

      And if you machine a hole in the base of that microscope, you can place it over a feature on a part that you want to inspect, but can't fit otherwise, or parts still in the machine with small features that need to be checked before removing the part. That was my first hack.

    So...can you use the Haas tool setter for engraving tools like the one in your video, or is it better to do it manually?🤔

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. If your machine has a probe, that’s the way to go. It takes very little pressure to trigger the probe. I’ve heard of some people avoiding the probe when their tools are crazy small, under about .002”/.05mm, but I haven’t had any issues myself.

    I can't see crap anymore. Nearly all the time I wear 1.5x reading glasses with blue blocking. AND nearly all the time I wear an opti-visor which is very handy- swung up out of the way, I never realize I am wearing it, but for detail work or vision, I swing it down; and I am old enough I don't care if I look like a dork. And a few times, I reach up to swing it down, and get a shock when it is not there because I don't have it on.
    I have a different chinese video microscope similar to JS' version; I could never get good detail with the annular LED around the lens, but by mistake I found I could get much better color (like reading a resistor) and much better detail by turning down the built in light and using a free standing LED over to the side; the incident light REALLY changed the quality of the 1080p image. And I have a pile of different loupes which I still use, along with the android magnifier on my phone.

    Hi Mr. Mark :)
    Why you don't use a touch sensor pad?
    You can check out the app called Screen Magnifier (+Light)... It helped me alot with these types of jobs..
    Thanks for the content and effort :)

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Screen Magnifier App is great, thx. We can definitely use the probe to touch off tiny tools. I've heard from people I trust that they think it damages the cutter (ridiculous.0015"/.04mm tip off), but I haven't seen that myself. Touch probes are terrific!

  • @miniprousa
    @miniprousa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just to clarify; you can not use the Wireless Tool Setter?

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We can definitely use the probe if we have it. Probes are fantastic! Without the probe, it's easy to get into trouble when touching off tiny cutters though. Some people I trust have had an issue when probing extremely small cutters, .0015"/.04mm tip offs or even smaller, but I haven't seen a problem myself.

    A guy I worked with was using the flashlight on his phone and dropped it into the machine. iPhones are not coolant proof.

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ouch! I used to carry a Streamlight Stylus penlight in my shirt pocket along with my scale all the time, loved them. I'm not on the shop floor any more though, so I usually just use the flashlight on my phone, but with "phones" costing $1000 now, I can understand keeping them away from the coolant and steel of the shop floor.

  • @letsfabricate5388
    @letsfabricate5388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use my loupe everyday, can't have my phone on the shop floor. But I will also never buy another Kennedy machinist box. I bought the same set up you have there almost 9 months ago, and it was such a disappointment!

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What box did you end up liking? I have a few Husky roller bench/boxes that are cheap, but I'm happy with them. The Lista that we film on is incredible, but pricey. I love my Kennedy's, but the drawers are definitely shallow for many of my tools that come in cases. I've seen a lot of people in our shop using the Harbor Freight boxes now, and they get the job done.

    • @letsfabricate5388
      @letsfabricate5388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@markterryberry4477 I have a couple harbor freight boxes at home, they definitely get the job done, but are a little rickety. I splurged on Lista box to go on top of my harbor freight box and have been very happy with it. I think I will soon be moving to all Lista cabinets and get rid of my Kennedy. All my mentors had Kennedys, so I bought one to follow in their footsteps, but come to find out, $3k later, they don't love their boxes either. Live and learn!😂
