    as the viewer who sent the save file, thank you very much for having it a go! I went to turn 50 to give up the religion to build more archer and saved the early war myself, but the late game with 8 cities and 400 culture on turn 300 and australia(on the other continent) winning science just is unstoppable. I also tried to conquer my continent with mass producing military but eventually failed because they have better units.
    At last I tried going for science myself and it worked! the geothermal helped a lot on campus. I spied on australia for boosts and won on turn 328.

      also it feels so unfair to let scotland and australia share one continent and four players share the other

    • @diegoficagna3057
      @diegoficagna3057 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Conquering you continent is not something you do on a whim, you have to decide to do it some 30 to 50 turns before you attack. A few weeks ago, I was playing as sweden and realized that I didn't have enough land to secure a win. So, I built some 10 spearmen and 5 catapults, then bee-lined the techs for carolean and bombards, while saving gold to upgrade them. Once everything fell into place, the AI couldn't really counter, and as those units were starting to get weak, I already had the civic to combine them into corps, which gave them more staying power.
      Also, 8 cities is very winnable if you laser focus on science, get audience chamber, and highly productive cities, but that's hard if you're new to deity.
      Finally, on deity, you should win around turn 250. By turn 300 a few AI will have completed the tech tree and will eventually win science.

      As a deity only player for the last few years, science victories are all about the research facility and powering them up with industrial zones. Potato has been instrumental in my early civ learning and he gave me the confidence to try deity my fist time through.
      Please note, you did pick a tough civ and spawned in a very uncomfortable location. Most civ players would have easily rerolled this start.

    I think people who struggle to understand the "inertia" of the game and predict where things are going should consider playing civs that make a lot of gold. Gold allows you to immediately complete tasks and pivot quickly when needed.
    That is my preferred way to play, but it might be the best way to play for people who have struggle controlling game momentum.

      @@bungalo50 Yes, I only didn't mention it because faith is a little bit harder to use than gold. It's usage is more limited and you need more game knowledge to maximize your benefit. When used correctly faith is absolutely OP though.

      Yeah I’m only about 150 hrs in so pretty new to the game but I’ve had most success funding my culture/science/dom wins with a strong economy. Haven’t beat Diety yet but getting close. Can consistently beat Emperor.

    • @brandonzzz9924
      @brandonzzz9924 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would argue that practicing with a handicap will handicap your learning. The best way to learn how to use and change inertia in Civ would be an early game production civ like the Cree. Every one of their abilities is aligned with gameplay basics. Unique scout teaches map exploration (always useful), Unique improvement teaches tile improvement early and often (always useful), Traders are super powerful and a bonus to trade teaches trade based economy (usually necessary), Alliance bonuses incentivize diplomacy (very powerful for most games).
      Everything Unique ability of the Cree pushes players to master the basics, and then choose a victory condition towards the middle of the game. This reinforces the basics of Civ (food, production, expansion) without confounding factors like unique districts that railroad other civs. Once the Cree have their baseline cities up and running, they can choose any victory condition from a base of strength, which is quite typically the optimal way to play most civs.
      I rely on gold way too much because I get bored with optimizing everything past about medieval era and gold is a crutch that fixes poor planning. I think it is a very powerful strategy, but is easy to use for convenience which removes the natural mechanics to force players to make choices for the future and build their own inertia.

    Maybe a cool idea would be to do like follow up episodes on disaster saves, maybe that after getting into a playable position you return the save file and then continue playing and at some point down the line when you both have finished then sort of compare notes and see how both of you continued on after it. Does sound like a bit of work, but also might be interesting and lets the audience see how this story ends as well.

    I only tried one Deity game on four-leaf-clover yet. Won it by scumsaving to path-block other settlers in the map central as Suleiman the magnificent and then go full Domination. Still was damn close as Peter/Russia tried Religious, needing only one more city to win at a point.
    Even with good heroes (Herkules, Himiko) and barbarians demolishing Wu Zeitan.
    When I won I simultaniously felt great and dirty, due to the scumsave and luck.
    Give it a try on Deity guys, it's really managable if you replay some turns and know what you will go up to :)

    Definitely going for a religion with Ethiopia as your neighbor on deity isn't a solid choice UNLESS you are planning to fight for a religious victory as your win condition, because otherwise you'll spend the whole damn game trying to stop him from converting. Arabia is a mixed bag, I've had games where they didn't get a religion and they were happy that I spread mine to them, but I've never had a game with Ethiopia as a neighbor where I went for a religion and it didn't devolve into a holy war.

    I cringed pretty hard when Ethiopia hates your guts and you sold the only 20 iron you're ever going to get because you got it from a stellar peace deal and have NONE of your own. You could've used that iron to make a Man at Arms, drastically increasing the combat strength of all your cities, instead of a little bit of gold to purchase a tile or whatever you blew it on. Chopping flat land woods is also not worth it in the early game. Chops on a hill are excellent because you can place a mine on it afterwards. If you save a woods on flat grassland you could have a 2 food 3 production tile with a lumber mill in the early game. Instead of a dead 2 food tile that's not worth working until conservation, and 90 production immediately. Production is good to have now but not if it neuters a city for the rest of the game because you have no hills. In comparison that flatland lumber mill is going to significantly bolster that city's production throughout 80% of a 200 turn game, and only takes 15% of the game to pay off the lost chop. Lumber mills do improve with tech too you know. Also jungle isn't ALWAYS a great chop. Leaving jungle on a plantation tile isn't a bad idea for +1 food. A banana plantation for example will always have at least 3 food on it early game, and like Potato says, a 3 food +whatever else tile is WAY better than a 2 food tile and the same. Because it's either counting towards surplus growth or covering the deficit population cost of a 1 food 4 production plains mine. (Apprenticeship)

    Going hard on religion was the abysmal mistake of the save in the first place. The original player should have scouted Ethopia and Arabia by like...turn 15 with how close they are to their capital. Both of those are *extremely* religious civs, going for religion in proximity to them is an absolute waste of time and turns 70+ showed off why: they drowned you in an infinite deluge of missionaries. Holding your own religion was an absolute impossibility, should have instantly pivoted to campuses in preparation for a little manifest destiny before settling into a culture game.
