The problem with recommending Rome for new players is that their bonuses take passively care of a couple of important early game mechanics that you otherwise need to deal with and thus playing Rome doesn't teach you how to play early game properly.

Sumeria will always be my go to recommendation for new players. By rewarding you with extra goodies for doing things you should be doing without forcing half cost unique districts and extra adjacency bonuses allows you to learn how to play the game properly so that when you play civs with crazy districts and adjacency bonuses like Japan and the Netherlands, you'll get crazy yields without Peter declaring a surprise war on you turn 29 and taking your undefended capital.

Some thought about the early decision making. As what you’ve mentioned,Rome will get a free momentum (most likely +road between the first two cities), so I personally have a extremely high priority for producing a second settler as soon as possible. When I play a standard map size, I would consider producing double scout and then go straight to the settler. Double scout allows you to explore the map quicker ,(with a variety of distinctive advantage, city state, meet other civ, tribal village etc), and it will likely to get the +5 circumnavigation at the ancient era. Rome’s unique building and unit is almost not available for the first era. In order to increase the possibility to get to a golden age (my personal preference though, and I know it’s extremely hard on deity level). If sometimes we are quite lucky to get a 20 point at the first 40t, these extra 5 point can be a defining factor for the entire game as we will have a completely different approach and strategic planning in terms of differ age we move into the next era. Slinger is incredibly helpful in early game, yet due to its relatively low melee strength and mobility, I will recommend to produce it after the double scout and second settler. Anyway, this is just a general approach when playing Rome. It still vastly depends on specific circumstances

I just started a game as Rome and went on TH-cam on my phone while the game loads. This was the first video suggestion.

Super educational, really helpful to try and figure out that step up from emperor to deity! Basically I just don't play efficiently enough, your units are swarming 6 legions at a capital around turn 70... Fast. (although I don't have secret societies, but you also didn't have to stop off for a religion either!)

I found it that rome is the perfect civ for science victory if you build the campus as the first thing in any cities and expand very quickly

Wanted to pass on my most recent Civ 6 adventure. I'm a Prince level player, still learning how to use the lessons I've learned through many many hours of watching your videos. Probably my biggest weakness in my game is getting cities settled quickly enough in the early game and I've been trying to correct that. Anyhow, I was (clumsily) trying to get set up for a Legion chopping rush against my nearest neighbor, Simon Bolivar. But the barbs were just giving me pure hell early on (at one point I had four camps all around Rome and the one city I had forward settled against Simon), so I ended up having to spam warriors and slingers to deal with them. No worries I figured - I could just upgrade them to Legions later as long as I kept enough cash around. And it made me research Archery early.
So, I just happen to notice that Simon has no army at all, something like 20 military strength, so I send scouts up his way to sniff around. I find that the barbs, after getting tired of beating up on me, decided to start punching Simon around, they're attacking his capital. And just then a settler pops out one space away from one of my scouts, heading for the same area I was going to forward settle him next. No way in hell was I going to pass up this opportunity, and while I wanted to wait for Legions I decided it was time to go to war with the army I had. So I gather up my band of warriors and slingers, upgrade all the slingers to archers, declare on Simon and steal his settler. I decided to let the barbs soften up his capital while I took his second city with three archers and three warriors, with a few more reinforcements behind. It was totally undefended, no walls, and I take it in two turns with hardly any damage to my troops. I put Magnus in the city to keep it from flipping and then press on to the capital - time is of the essence.
The capital was a bit tougher. Simon finally decided it was maybe time to build a few troops to defend himself, and popped out a couple of archers to help out his single warrior. When I saw the first one I detoured to the Wheel so I could buy a Heavy Chariot to help out, but he didn't get into the fight before it was over. It took about four or five turns but my Warriors and Archers finally prevailed, capturing the capital and sending Gran Colombia packing. I lost two warriors but figured that was an acceptable trade. So now, between their two captured cities, the settler I stole and another settler I built while the war raged on, I now have six cities at Turn 59.
I'm sure it's lots of fun to overwhelm your enemies with conjured hordes of angry Roman dudes with swords, and maybe I'll still get to try it with Philip of Spain (who isn't real happy with me right now) once I get my new cities off the ground, build up some of the infrastructure in the captured cities that Simon didn't bother with and get the economy back on track. But it's a hell of a lot of fun to Warrior rush a hapless neighbor too.

I actually learned 2 things from this: 1 I didn't know about the loyalty penalty if you found a religion in a city that already has a religion. And 2, that the cost of a district is locked in upon placement.

Hey, Potato. Huge fan over here, you have all my love for you, but there were a few things i would do differently. You didn't utilise the dark age properly- there is a card that gives you a +5 combat strenght to mele units, it would have made your units even more op. You would have needed a few less legions and have better tiles to work in the capital. Also one of the chops was actually on a tile of another city and was used to speed up the shrine.
Anyway, rome is simply broken in the secret societies mod. If you get a classical golden age you pop new cities insanely fast, buying settlers with faith, even with only one holy site. Combined with Magnuses ability to not consume population, your empire simply snowballs into a massive power house noone can stop.

Yes secret society looks "too good" in that scenario (and probably in general). 3 promote Magnus+pingala+Victor and buffs from Voidsingers when you had only 3 promotions at max that point. +holy site synergie - probably Rome would not pick fast holy site on basic mode.
People had enough struggling against diety AI on standard mode over the years. :)
I tried this on immortal and it works.
The higher the difficulty the less viable the early rush against AI.
But it would be sad not using legions with Rome simply due to "not good enough" against fast AI crossbowman. Probably in that case legion would be for defense.

I understand the benefit of slingers early on, but when using Rome I personally like to get as many warrior units as possible so when I get legions I can just upgrade all my warriors into legions instead of having to waste more time producing legions from scratch
