Good review but I have to say I find it an easy bike to manually move around as it's weight is very low, power delivery is smooth, Apple CarPlay works very well and was easy to set up. For me it's been a very easy bike to live with. Just strange how peoples perceptions differ. Mine is the DCT and I love it.

Outstanding and comprehensive review, never seen it done better for a long term test of a motorcycle; all the pertinent points were effectively covered with plenty of relative personal perspective on features and benefits. The switchgear and tech integration details are specifically key insights into what a prospective owner will be most challenged to recognize in a short test of the bike on their own.

I understand that these are personal opinions after owning this bike for several months. I've similar experience with this bike. I got mine on Feb2022, and after over 13.000 miles I don't agree with some of the points. From my experience, the Android auto/apple car play are really a plus, and all companies should go towards that direction. It took me 5 minutes to set it up, sometimes I have to pair again the headset, specially when starting the bike while the intercom is still off. The throtle response or engine breaking is something you can customize, it's not the most intuitive interface, but after setting my personal ridding modes, there is no need to mess around with the settings.
The secondary screen is because when you use android/apple car, you still have basic info on the secondary screen, you will always be able to see speed, gas, milleage, gear selection even when there is an incoming call or while you are navigating using your map app.
it's a heavy bike yes, but if you find that a negative you shouldn't go for a big displacement bike.
The controls are difficult at the begining, untill you get use to them is not that big deal. I do think that they should be retroiluminated being so many buttons, at night it's a bit difficult to use the buttons that are not used that often. Meaning, there is no problem with blinkers, but if you whant to change setting on the fly or navigate google maps you will find it challenging. Better to stop in a safe exit. And the on the other hand, something that I found awful are the standard tires. I got mine with Dunlop tires, and they were super soft, not good for touring at all. For those who are considering this bike, in a nut shell, I would say it's a great touring bike, more to the touring rather than the sport side of the segment. But it's really comfortable for long distances, and long ridding days. The product/money ratio is very good, and also a great option for tall, and big guys.

I think it is a very good long commuter bike with just a top box on. The DCT and very low centre of gravity allows for very controlled filtering at slow speed and great weather protection at motorway speed. Prefect for my commute of 26 miles each way in and out of Dublin with twisty county roads, motorway and city streets! I am an ex BMW RT and GS Adventure rider (two of each over the years).

Excellent review Alison and Michael. Living with a bike for months - and in all kinds of conditions - can result in a very different perspective than having one for even a couple of days, obviously. But the review itself was very well focused on actual ownership experience; the stuff that matters. A bunch of us don't have ideal garage/parking options, we are all built differently, and we use our bikes for different reasons. I - WE - are patiently waiting here in the US for the NT1100 so we can at least throw a leg over one to see if it meets our needs. I'm currently on an '18 V-Strom 1K with panniers and a top box, a better screen, and quite a few small upgrades/updates (just awaiting the installation of my own Road 6s): very similar, in fact, to this bike in it's mission, personality, utility, and form factor. Many of the slight dislikes are in common, but once you get used to wheeling it around, it's a great travel companion (long and short). Looking with anticipation to a more forward-looking, modern bike that was made for the same glorious purpose. Thanks for the great review!

spec sheet warriors. I'm probably going to get this bike myself for touring europe and the odd bit of commuting. My first car was a 2011 skoda with a 1.2l 3cyl engine that had 60bhp and 108nm of torque. It weight a ton, carried 5 people plus luggage and had aircon.
My current bike is a 125cc scooter which weighs 160kg with 15bhp, carries my wife and I plus bags and shopping sometimes.
Both cases, they weren't fast by any measure, but they still got to their destination.
The NT is a rocket in comparison.

Good job but a few points mentioned are a bit misleading. I ride a 2020 AT with the same display. Even in brightest sunlight the display is perfect with regard to visibility. On top it is stunning that after a year of driving she does not mention the real purpose of the small display. If you do the navigating via Google maps on full screen, the extra display gives you the missing, most important information. You only have to pair the headset once by the way. Throttle response can be adjusted. Buttons are logical after a short period of getting used to it. At and NT are great bikes. DCT is a lock. After having it there is no way back.

As I'm looking seriously at the NT1100, I found it was a good review. I have noticed though how many reviews criticise weight of different bikes at around 240kgs. My wife's burgman is 277kg, my previous trophy was 302kg wet, a previous K1200LT was 386kg, and I bought a lighter weight bike of a 1200 Tiger at 244kg. There are very few bikes, and none that I'm interested in, under 200kgs.

I have a BMW 1250 RT and besides the big size of it (it was meant to be big, so…), I feel that it is a bike for everything. For every use, included a very soft off road trail, it can handle it , so it is quite a well balanced bike. In winter it is marvelous to ride, offers a great protection. Nowadays, there are no bad bikes. My motorcycle has a lot of features that I don’t make use of and others that do their work without my intervention, which is lovely to have. The connectivity is not the best… but when I decided to buy it the connectivity advantages were not a priority. The most important things for me is mechanic and electronic reliability, the confidence feeling of the chassis, breaking power, the grip of the tyres, luggage space, and comfort. Every other features are ok but not essential 👌🏻

As a bike aimed at touring, and as you mentioned designed to carry luggage and a pillion, I was disappointed with the rather low maximum payload quoted for the bike of 194 kg. Bikes like the GS are around the 217 kg mark which gives a little more margin for two-up touring, and my middleweight Tiger Sport 660 has even more at 223 kg.

Love my DCT NT1100. With Android Auto you need a high quality / high data transfer rate for it to work reliably. Once you have that it just works. Yeah, a lot of buttons on the left hand bar but once you've figured them out it's not a big deal. I'm 6ft / 90kg so maneuvering the bike is fine. I could see smaller riders struggling.
Other observations. The bike is very stable at high speed and or in windy conditions. Much better than my V-Strom 650 that I had previously. I've not had the issues with sun on the dash as mentioned in the video.
Yeah, I wanted a red one as well. Mine is black as that's all we're getting in New Zealand.

I think it looks futuristic & well made. A lot of new bikes take a while to gain acceptance by the herd. Hayabusa for example. However a hint of HRC would do no harm (maybe some fireblade drill holes in the fairing lol). Looks wise my only minus is the exhaust. It looks like an afterthought (good excuse for a lightweight fruity replacement?). I had CBR1000F & it seems to do as much if not more (150++) than the NT for a lot less. Bring back the CBR/VFR range says I. 1990's Sports tourers were great but for some reason fell out of favour. The media saying they were jack of all trades but masters of none didn't help. But still a nice bike & I think parallel twins make sense for most bikes as a package,

I don’t even own a motorcycle under 500 pounds except maybe my ZH2.. Anything under 500 pounds is pretty much a bicycle with an engine.. I want to be able to afford these bikes and have them be stable out on the open road.. reducing weight can be very pricey and not necessary.. it’s bad enough, there are barely any full size bikes left to choose from anymore, I don’t want manufacturers canceling everything over 800cc.

Great review as always. If its anything like the africa, the 5th con could be the cost and complexity of maintenance (like the valves, sparkplugs, air filters…), when Ducati now do better, you know its time for honda to improve that aspect, more so on a touring bike.

Screen adjustment, almost the same on a Deauville, don't want the screen moving while riding and speaking as a mechanic think it just needs some lube on the guides. Sun on the dash, even back in the day it happens with all dashes even in cars, so nowt has changed. Throttle response and modes just like a rider fits all bikes but doesnt fit any of em perfectly until you set it up to your riding style. Buttons on bars and touchscreen, almost all riders over 45 ish are not going to be comfortable with this and remember the lot, but practice makes perfect. Plug n play, even in cars, trucks, coaches and more it's never perfect and yep over 40's ish do struggle. 240-260Kgs isn't heavy for an 1100cc tourer, my old 2008 Deauville with a full tank and a weekends worth of luggage and Scrutineering kit was 292Kg's as measured by the scales at Bemsee and my NC750X is 220Kgs and if you find a bike too heavy to handle then why are you riding it? Filtering through traffic? try that on a loaded Deauville in the wet.
Like the review and say hello to hubby for me and thankyou for the cupcakes they are delish.

The Deauville Pannier was notorious for locks failing, and popping open without warning if you closed them wrong.(650 and 700) Why can't Honda do Panniers properly? Pan European had terrible boxes too. Yes they stayed closed, but very fiddly to attach and remove. The NT1100 headlight is also terrible once you get away from street lights. Clearly Honda pays no attention to customer feedback. Deauville also had terrible headlights. No matter what you did, unless you put in a (now illegal) HID kit, you'd only get the trees above you illuminated, not the ground in front. The obvious problem of course also for touring, is the absence of a shaft drive.

I have a Honda Crosstourer and the panniers are great. They latch closed independently of the locks and are quick and easy to fit or remove on a frameless fitting system. I've not had a problem with them.

Its easier to set your phone up on them , Its so simple
DO NOT pair your phone to headset
Every time i switch on my crash helmet and then plug your phone into the bike ( most cars you have to plug your phone into the car to use android auto )
And yes you can work it without headset ( watch RICHY VIDA)

    Great machine no doubt.
If only the NT1100 had shaftdrive this bike in DCT version would probably be My next touring bike untill then i stick to My lovely VFR1200X Crosstourer DCT.
Will never go back to manual transmission DCT is just brilliant.

I had the manual Crosstourer for 7 years and 49,000 miles. Lovely bike.
Bought the DCT version of the NT1100 three weeks ago and have done 750 miles. It really is a fantastic bike, and the after 750 miles I would not want to ride a manual tourer ever again. Really the chain is no problem with a centre stand, a squirt of chain lube every 500 miles, clean it every 1,000 to 1,500 and adjust it very occasionally. It is significantly lighter than the CT (37kg) and the CofG seems much lower so none of the top heavy feeling I used to experience with the CT. If all you do is 50 miles for a coffee at the weekends its overkill, but if you like touring its very well "specced" as standard.

An excellent long term review of the NT. Seems like a good first attempt Honda but there is plenty to improve on. Too tall for me with no seat adjustment ( why Honda - this isn't making motorcycling inclusive ?) Has any manufacturer made a successful integration with phone technology. I know of Goldwings, 1250RT's, 85tt's and NT1100's all with add on sat nav's because the built in system is so poor unreliable and unworkable. As for weight my St1300's were about 330kg wet but they carried it so well split tank helped. I'll keep a watching brief for the 2/3 year development of this bike

    • @keithsbitsandpieces
      @keithsbitsandpieces ปีที่แล้ว

There is nothing wrong with the phone integration, JUST TURN OFF YOUR BLUETOOTH, Simple really
If you can ride an st how can't you fit on the NT , They are 60kgs lighter and only 15mm higher seat

  • @MrBottomrung

So glad I seem to have a completely different bike that came with an easily movable screen (just gently rock it from side to side) , easily connected comms with a screen for Sat Nav and a secondary display for speedo which in a years riding I have always been able to see in all light. No jerkiness unless I make it so and I find changing gear helps. As for looks its in the eye of the beholder. It helps to read the handbook as well. Perhaps Alison didn't get one. I think this bike may need people with a higher IQ to enjoy it. Sorry this is a negative review. Seems Main stream bike media love to hate it. Did Donald Trump own one?
