    Have had a few K1600's - 2012 GTL, 2016 GTL, 2018 B and 2019 GT - so yes, a bit of a fan. In total about 200k miles on them. The bike is nimble on her feet in spite of her weight. Fast. Comfortable. Rewards you when you want to ride quickly, comfy when on long slabs of tarmac. A joy to ride.

      I have a GT. Thinking about a new B. One concern is fit. I’m 6’ 2”. I’m concerned that the B may be a tight fit compared to a GT. What is your opinion having owned both?

    • @allwheeldrive
      @allwheeldrive ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And, honestly, what about running costs over time, particularly after warranty? How much time did it spend at the shop? Did you keep records? This is the biggest problem I have in finally owning one. I've passed on two in the last three years because of its history and all the warnings in the blogs.

    • @jcrewguy123

      @@gregfleenor9654 The B does have a slightly lower seat height, whereas the GT and GTL have an adjustable low/high settings. With the "feet below you" position, the B does bend your knees slightly more, but I didn't find it uncomfortable. (I'm 5' 11") As you know, the B has the floorboards which provides another position without adding additional bars/pegs that the GT and GTL would require. If you are able to test ride them - either through a dealer, friend or a rental from Twisted Road or Riders-share that would be the best way to determine what is best for you. While I liked the B - and most notably I had the Remus Quad exhaust that sounded AWESOME. She would burble and bark on both hard acceleration and deceleration with the quick shift. I would go up and down thru the gears just to hear... But for me I like the GT as I'm more of a spirited sport rider who takes longer trips (even if the Remus exhaust on the GT doesn't have the sounds of the Remus Quad on the B).

      @@allwheeldrive Very little time in the shop. Only one issue with two of the four K1600's - that was a weepy waterpump. (down by the right foot peg) both were covered under warranty. Otherwise normal maintenance - do my own oil changes, diff fluid, battery, air filters. Tires I let a shop and/or dealer handle. Otherwise not a lick of problems. I don't doubt there are those who have had issues (K1600 Forum) but far far more have had nothing but miles and smiles.

    K16 way over RT for me ! Coming off FJR after 17 years of bliss, I extensively test-rode RT... and thought "Naah !". K16, to the contrary, was for me the Next Level... still very impressed and loads of riding fun with it, after 2 years !

  • @Rambler358

    I first had a 2014 GTL and loved it until it was totaled. Next was a 2017 RT, and although I liked it, it just didn’t fit me well and I missed that inline 6. I traded the RT in for a 2018 Grand America and liked it a lot except for the instability on the freeways. Tires and windshield changes didn’t help with the instability on my model. So I sold the GA and picked up a 2022 GTL. Put on a Sargent seat and couldn’t be happier and the instability issue is gone. Having reverse pretty much negates the additional weight of the K16 for me, as I don’t feel it except for very slow maneuvers. Different strokes for different folks, but this is the bike for me.

  • @NicolasSaudemont
    @NicolasSaudemont ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Very interesting !
    I own a 2016 K1600GT, and I can relate to almost everything you said. But honestly, the RT with its boxer engine stands no chance against this inline 6 in term of joy/pleasure for the pilot.
    For sure, if you happen to ride mostly within town, or need to do a lot of low speed manoeuvres or even push/pull the bike, yes the RT will be a better choice.
    But its engine is far from being enjoyable : at low RPM it feels like it would stall or start lugging (even if it actually won't), at mid-range you get outrageous vibrations and rumbling, but yes it gets better high in the rev range with a nice sound.
    The K16 engine is enjoyable everywhere in the rev range, the power reserve feels infinite and the sound is from amazing to mesmerising even with the stock exhaust !
    I even bought it several time to the track and it behaved very well ! (I've never seen anyone doing track days on RTs)
    This bike clearly is the equivalent of an M5 : it's not a sport vehicle, but it has the best engine you can fit on a big bike and still offers GranTurismo features and comfort.
    (and just as an M5, you'd find other cars much more "reasonable".... but you won't get the smile this engine will give you)
    I use it to commute in Paris suburbs, and I can tell you it's better at filtering (lane splitting) than RTs whose mirrors get in the way of a lot of stuff.
    Honestly the only reason to prefer an RT is for the price (and maintenance cost) or if you live in a country where it rains 80% of the time.
    Also, the K16 is at its best in the GT version : the GTL, Grand America and Bagger are less ideal versions. You'll lose the sportiness of it with a bad compromise in my opinion. If you want comfort go for an RT or a GoldWing (so that you still get a true engine). If you want a bagger, why choose a bike with 160HP ?

  • @MirzaAhmadBarrister
    @MirzaAhmadBarrister ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Absolutely agree re plus points 👍. Adaptive Cruise Control is "essential", especially when the lower model RT has it. The next upgrade must have this as standard, plus a properly integrated dashboard, instead of the "bolted on" TFT screen. BMW must listen to K1600 riders!

  • @cosef4491

    The BMW 💙🤍 k1600s are the only luxury class sport tourers on the planet. My wife loves it and said between the semi active suspension and the smooth inline 6 engine It’s what she imagine riding on a cloud is like or maybe even Aladdin’s magic carpet😁. BMW k1600’s are In a class of their own. If you want a premium luxurious sport tourer there are NO other options. The only options there are is what kind of k1600 do you get. A GT, B, GA, or GTL?!? Decisions, decisions😎 Maybe just get one of each😉

    The RT is a fine bike and I do like my 2021. However, having owned several K1600GT's, I can say that my observations are that the K1600 makes everything feel effortless. It never feels strained, or over the tips of it's ski's. As good as the 1250 is, it is no buttery smooth inline 6, and you will know when you are cruising at 85-100 mph. Whereas with the K1600, the engine just pours out smooth turbine like power in a way that seems like the engine is not working hard at all. The K1600 is also more planted on the road, not that the RT feels sketchy, but the RT just feels a bit less planted. The RT has lighter handling, so if tight canyons are part of the journey, the RT had the advantage, but it isn't massive. The K1600GT will hustle, it just takes a little more effort. I would say the the K1600GT is a bit roomier for the pillion. RT and K1600GT are about the same price, though the RT is cheaper to maintain. In the end, you either like an inline 6 or twin.

    • @craigfavorito9050
      @craigfavorito9050 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would have to agree with your statements about the K1600 being more planted at higher speeds. I've owned an '19 RT for 3+ years and I am seriously considering jumping over to the k1600GT this coming spring for just that reason. Especially in our North American midwest & western states, where we have such long, straight & fast highways we need to traverse for hours just to get to the more scenic and twisty routes, It just makes sense to have a highway 'cruise-missile' that can also do double duty in the twisty's.

      I've had an RT as well - and loved the light weight and nimbleness. Also have had 4 K1600's - 2 GTL's, a B and a GT. So I guess I like the power available at any speed, gear and elevation. The 6 pulls like a freight train.

    The K16GT is a lovely concept, but reliability is atrocious for a premium motorcycle. I had a TPS, Coil and switch gear failure in about 15k miles. I also find the "dash" just looks like a cheap looking ipad that's been slapped on as an afterthought. The gear box is also extremely clunky and quite surgy. I went back to an FJR ES and never looked back. 5000 miles around Norway last summer and it was bliss. Thanks for the video. 👌

    I have had a GSA, a K1300s, and a couple of S1000RR's... and although I loved the GSA as an all around bike... for strict road touring the k1600 is far superior! The RT may be great but is lacking in appearance and performance for me

    This type of a motorcycle is made for a person that really loves to be on a motorcycle and knows how to handle one. He is gonna have a ball on this type of bike. I think other than performance, the single, most important part of a motorcycle is the fit. Does it fit you? that makes all the difference in your riding abilitie and in your enjoyment

  • @Fernando90054
    @Fernando90054 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I have a 2021 RT at the present day. I still enjoy the bike and it has a lot of virtues. The wind protection is superb; It handles quite well on very different type of roads and the suspension system is very satisfying; It can be ridden in a more sporty way but despite the well balanced performance the comfort zone for this machine is not the sporty environment or sporty riding manner. It can be ridden fast but it’s not what we feel it was meant for; It’s heavy and large but no so heavy to need a reverse gear. The bike is normally manageable by hand. It’s a nice versatile bike but after three years of ownership I got dull with it. Tried the K1600 GT and liked it. The ride felt familiar but peppier. The six cilindre engine is a statement for harmony. I have no complaints about the old and good boxer engine, but I recognize that the six in line motor is a completely different talk. I could felt what it was made for. And I could say that I found what was lacking on my beloved 1250 RT.
    Dynamically, the wind effect on the bike , and the suspension can be less forgiving on the K1600 GT than the one servicing the RT? Of course it does! The RT is a easier bike to handle generally speaking by an average skilled rider? True! But when you feel that the bike is getting dull for you. What do you do? Will you stop riding?? No. Not at all. You’ve just arrived to the point where you’re ready for up grade your sets and step up your game moving to own a K1600 GT.
    Or, you’re not evolving anymore, you’re stagnating or degreasing, because of aging or because of health and you don’t need to stop having the pleasure of riding a bike. You’re still in shape to travel riding a bike. Then you backdown a little on challenging and more demanding machines and you step down a little bit and buy an RT. Which by the way, I own one, and can reassure, it’s an excellent touring bike! It’s not quite a thing of what’s the best bike. It’s a thing of knowing what’s the best bike for you in a certain moment. That’s the relevant question. Both bikes have their characteristics. If they were the same, there was no reason for both to exist on the same frame of space and time, offered by the same Brand. They exist both because they’re meaningful in terms of market potential, where both models own relevant selling shares.
    I’m giving up the adaptive cruise control, the better wind management, the better low speed maneuverability, and generally more forgiving and easy controlling RT for the more demanding and straight usability of the K1600 GT’s . Why?
    Because it’s time to feel that rush again. Of trying to control and own something a little more difficult to get comfortable with. Because I am still young and strong enough to? If I don’t try it, maybe I will never know the answer, right? Let’s find out.
    Next week, I’ll be swapping bikes! Wish me luck!
    Thanks for the video and community comments. This was really pleasant and useful.
    To everyone: - Please ride safe (but don’t forget to enjoy!)
    ✌🏻✌🏻

      Hi Fernando, you've had your new bike for about a month, how is it?

    • @Fernando90054
      @Fernando90054 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would say, the engine is endless. I feel that it isn’t explorable on public roads. In that sense the swapp of bikes, the RT 1250 for the K1600 GT was the right decision. The gearbox isn’t comparable. The gearbox of the K1600 GT is way smoother and precise. Another difference is the feeling of the bike weight. Mainly that factor is always present. In general this is a good thing, you’ll be alert of the situation not forgetting that you’re handling an heavy machine, specially in slow maneuvers and bad asphalt roads, but I prefer that sensation to the floating sensation of the RT. I m not missing the adaptive Cruise control, the traditional device covers well the need for it on longer highway trips. The extra weight of the GT gives you better general stability and specially when the bike is facing strong cross winds. The windshield and aerodynamic protection on the GT is not so efficient as on the RT but it is close enough. The difference is that on the GT you’ll have the tendency to ride it faster than on the RT, so the wind blast will be more notable. Generally, it’s a clear step up. But it isn’t easier to ride compared with the RT. The RT is easier in almost every way you look at it. The GT is more technical in terms of riding skills from the rider. It’s forgiving but not RT forgiving. A serious bike in my opinion, I’m very satisfied with my decision 👌🏻

    First, what a great long term review. The beast is not always the best choice. It wasn’t mentioned, but higher center of gravity also makes a difference in low speed handling and padding around. I did go for a 2021 RT last year, with the MCN honest and open review making a big impact in my decision. I also don’t use the phone cubby hole because it is to small, so a small tank bag works great and connectivity is great as long as one has the latest firmware update. Great job guys.

    They’re both BMW’s, both touring bikes and both have a lot of storage. In my opinion that is where the comparison ends with an RT. The in-line 6 outperforms the 2cylinder boxer on all levels. Also on stability and comfort e.g. in having a lot less vibration etc. This connectivity stuff actually is a negative point for me. And most of the things you don’t like really sound like personal preferences and not per say bad things on the K1600. Thanks for vindicating my choice of an RT. At one point, it was a 3 way split: GSA, RT or GT. The GT was ruled out because of the lack of ACC. The GSA, which my wife loved on the test ride, ruled out due to weather protection. The RT won my vote because it’s the complete bike for my needs. I commute to London, 3 times a week doing the A14, A1, A406, and it’s done in all but the iciest conditions. I will be two up touring, starting in April, with a trip to North Wales followed by the Lakes, Dales and Scotland.
    The RT is a better value proposition, or it was until the production slow down means what used to be standard in LE Trim is now at extra cost. That takes what used to be a £21k bike to £23.5k. I love my RT, if it had the 30 litre GSA tank it’d be perfect. I can only get 1.5 commutes out of the tank and that’s riding in eco. BTW, the ACC (radar cruise) is amazing.

    I had a 2011 model and I loved it for all the same reasons mentioned here - it's spoilt me for pretty much any other touring bike - but mine had a wonky clutch thanks to being an early production unit, which made low-speed handling unpredictable, and the weight of it meant I couldn't pick it back up by myself... I even sprained my ankle trying to lift it once, so I had to let it go.

But due to price, repair, etc...I guess I have to suffer and keep my old 2006 honda st1300. But this is what I'd buy if I was retired, had disposable income, lived near a dealer, and could afford the tow truck and ride back home etc...just for the joy of having the best. I went from a 2010 K1300GT to a 2020 R1250RT. Noticed a huge loss in power, but gained extra gadgets and seemingly lower centre of gravity and easier to manouvere. Rarely put the K1300GT on the centre stand for example.

    I think in the UK young people are less inclined to buy motorcycles for two reasons.
    1) Changes in licencing laws since the mid-1980s.
    2) No more 2-stroke (In my day you could jump on a 250cc 2-stroke bike aged 17, e.g. Yamaha TDR or TZR 250 which were fast bikes)
    The licencing laws were changed where I live in Jersey without warning in the middle of the night due to 4 of my friends having been killed in 3 separate incidents within months of each other. All of them were riding TZRs.

    After 6000 miles on a 2018 k1600 and only 2000 miles on a 2021 rt, I;m glad i switched to the rt. the k bike is very top heavy. Lean a little too far and over it goes. Thank god for the ilium motowerks engine and luggage guard, Even the dealer couldn't tell the k1600 tipped over once. The friction point on the k1600 is almost at the full release poinjt, rt is not much better. Like having no friction point at all. Makes low speed maneuvering harder than it should be.

    I suspect the latest round of upgrades will be the last. The K1600 must be nearly at the end of its production life. Hence no investment in improving the cruise control or phone compartment. I’ve had two GT,s, and the weight is not that much of an issue. I find it adds to the stability of the bike in nearly all circumstances. It’s great in really heavy wind for example. As a true sports tourer, it does what it’s designed for extremely well. I wish people would not always compare these bikes with Goldwings,especially the GT. I don’t agree that it gets uncomfortable after long days of 600 miles? Most owners,not those with free bikes on loan, adapt the bike to suit them,as most of us do. Don’t think this was an accurate summary of the bike’s capabilities.

  • @AB-hx9hs
    @AB-hx9hs 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Few months ago I did buy a used 12 K1600GT. The bike is a rocket & I don't think the RT can compare in terms of engine power & acceleration. But these bikes have too many things that will go wrong. Mine the rear shock was toast, one of the tire sensors keep going out, one Coil goes out every now & then. Fuel pump had to be replaced on a recall. Then the comfort issue, rode 200 miles round trip in one day. My Right arm was numb, back was killing me and just all around uncomfortable. Windshield sucks & it rattles over rough roads when fully extended. Wind protection is not that great. My old LT was so much better in all of those areas. Even my 1999 RT is better. But the engine and speed of the GT bike is hard to beat. I just wish for a top of the line bike it did not have these issues, there is simply no excuse.

    Here in Stockholm it's rare to see a bike on the roads between December and March, except the odd supermoto with studded tires. Yet in the UK (and Canada?) it seems that you keep riding even when temperatures hit freezing? How do you not die to ice?

    • @reverendhoover
      @reverendhoover ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's rare for temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius in the UK and main roads are treated with salt to reduce the possibility of ice. But road salt kills bikes, unless it washed off quickly, or the motorcycle is treated with an anti corrosion spray. I usually spend as long cleaning as riding, during the winter months!

    • @thebigoaktree8401
      @thebigoaktree8401 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the last thing I’d ever choose to do is ride in slick or Icy riding conditions. I can do rain but once it begins to get cold, and the temp drops the tires grab less payment and things can get sketchy really quickly.

    • @jeremyr62

      Nothing like Sweden. Average December temp in UK is about 5degC so winter riding is perfectly doable and plenty ride all year long, but the majority don't. I have always ridden all year round and you can get winter tyres now (Anlas) which make a huge difference in wet and snow. You need heated gear too so you don't freeze.

    I can imagine that, after not too many years, one or more of the features that people buy these uber-tech bikes for stops working, and the price of diagnosing the problem and remedying it is more than the bike is worth. It's fine to say that after 9,000 miles the bike looks good. But, unless it didn't, it's not very helpful. I really do question the practical lifespan of these machines, and ones that are much cheaper with not too dissimilar tech. MCN should do long term reviews and cost of ownership more than it does. BMW, I hear, isn't the most reliable brand out there.

Probably get shot down in flames for saying such sacrilege but it’s what I’ve found, if you don’t believe me take a test ride on a Goldwing, I’m pretty certain it will change your perception

    • @checker3694
      @checker3694 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As he said clearly in summary, when he asked Bmw, its due to massive torque, 70% from 1700rpm, that's gears need to be large and gapped further apart in cluster to cope with torque, hence the clunking. Suzuki don't have that problem as they don't make a 132ft lb engine of this size or spec. That's why Suzuki box is super smooth. So BMW does not need any lessons from Suzuki.

    It would be very instructive to follow this up with a long-term Goldwing review. Also, considering a 3-year-old version is a serious crap-shoot. All one needs to do is go to the forums and quickly compile a list of things that go wrong, some services/repairs only at dealers, cost of parts, etc. I just about purchased two BMWs recently, then chickened out after doing the research. I've had three BMW cars, the last of which was brand new, and will NEVER again give that company another dime. Dealing with them was the definition of arrogance and customer-directed apathy.

    A) Dealers in the USA are going away, every year, more and more. Unless BMW car dealers will honor bike service, this will be a big problem in the US. I will not ride 1.5 - 2 hours for service. B) The K is very complexed machine. Anything can and will go wrong. if it does go wrong, good luck with your bank account. I was extremally disappointment with mine back then, new 18 Grand America. So many issues, either mechanically or design issues that I just gave up. I refuse to believe that a bike with 15K on it will have as much issues as a 10 year old bike with 100K bike.
