I bought these. I pulled them out of the box and listened to them. Everything Zeos said was true. I went into the bedroom where my BF was doing art, he had a pair of Skullcandy crushers on. I was like "You're going to laugh at me. But these will sound better than those." He looked at me like I was fucking crazy, insane. I laughed and said "Im not joking literally try them"
He looked at me, and then back at the Skullcandy and was like no fucking way. He put them on, listened for about 30 seconds. Handed me his old skullcandy headphones and was like "You can have those, I'm keeping these" He legit couldn't believe how good they sounded. (I know Skullcandy's aren't great but to go from a line that advertises bass and music to the KPH30i's as far as aestethics its just not the same lol)
He's used em every day since.

So, today I've got my KPH30i. I listen to it carefully on a couple of good DAC/amps with my headphone testing list. Then, I look back to my wall decorated with Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (pad modded), Sennheiser HD280pro (new model), Sennheiser HD579, Yamaha MT5, Philips SHP9500, Grado SR80e, CM MH-752, Koss Porta Pro, Koss KSC75, KZ ZSN Pro... and I have this moment of clarity...
Why? Do I need those? Why they don't sound as good as this ugly ass $30 plastic thingy?
Thanks for your honest review and recommendation dude. But now I am happy and depressed at the same time (weird feelings). I am using the KPH30i with my FiiO BTR5 for everything and wondering the meaning of even having anything else... :(

I’ve been using AD1000Xs and R70Xs, but decided to get these because of this review. I find the bass to be kind of mushy, resulting in decreased clarity, but somehow vocals actually sound amazing, and at the price point there really isn’t anything to complain about these headphones. And I agree with Z on the idea that having tried many higher end headphones actually help appreciate these Koss cans more. If I were to put these on 10-year-ago me with almost no experience with better headphones I probably wouldn’t have felt anything special.
These cans are pretty warm to my ears so I find a colder sounding dac/amp working pretty well with it. The way they sound reminds me of my R70Xs actually: they don’t have anything in particular that makes you go wow when listening, but they sound natural and just work. Then after enjoying your music for a while, you remind yourself of the price - that’s when you go WOW.

Got 'em yesterday dropped shipped to the Amazon 4 Star store. The first song sounded a bit funny, but keep getting better minute by minute. 20 songs later I was like, "yeah, I get it now." These things are damn good. They just made the whole market look kinda silly.

For new owners, you can tweak the sound with the Kramer mod - remove the ear pads, and gently pry the plastic cover off the diaphragm. Drill 4 small holes in the outer ring to improve the bass, 4 holes in the mid ring to improve the mids, 1 hole in the center to improve the treble.

I was actually able to get them through Drop at $21. Z was Right!!! Because they not only compare, they actually exceeded my expectations. I first tried them stand alone through my desktop and was impressed. Then through my Amp and was more impressed. Then through my Dragonfly Cobalt and was Blown Away!!! All BTW Streaming with Tidal. Z I've changed the pads on my KPH30i, I've got orange yaxis. Stupid comfortable. You have to destroy the stock pads to access the clips that hold the frame in place to replace them. They cannot be saved. Throw them to the pit.
Also: I've had them for months. They are as good as you say. Yaxis work wonders for comfort. If you rewire them, I'd love to see how you do it. I'd like to make mmcx cables for them, but don't have the know-how.

@@calebterr8877 I didn't take any while I was doing the swap. I can describe it simply- underneath the pad is a plastic cover, with concentric slots that allow the pass through of sound. This cover protects the driver, and features 3 square holes through which small hooked tabs from the ear cup portion of the headphone clasp the cover. You cannot feel their location through the pad, and require some fine point object (like a screwdriver tip) to dislodge. The first step is to tear up as much of the original pad as you can, so you can access all that stuff underneath.

At $30 bucks, no replacement parts available of course. I kept the broken ones in case I ever need parts.

I got on the hype train with these and bought them, but now feel I have no need. I think they are great for the price, especially considering they have a built-in mic, and solid build, but at the end of the day they are $30 headphones. Even if we are generous and say they should cost twice as much, they are still a low-end product. Good value if you are short on cash, or want something disposable, but if you can afford something more, I don't see the need to own these. SHP 9500 (also a low-end product, but a notch or two above these) are going for about $80 now, and if you are going to sit down and listen, definitely worth it over these (they lack detail resolution but are a great buy for the price if you like that kind of can). These are very light and slim, and could be good for jogging, but why not just get wireless earbuds for on the go? I was ready to write these off as terrible when I listened on the audio out on my laptop, but after using a Fiio BTR5 they suddenly had merit. Better dac/amp would probably get a little more out of them. To me they seem somewhat wide, slightly warm, but relatively balanced in signature. Main issue is lack of clarity, detail retrieval, and separation. I admit they do impressive and unexpected things for the price (mainly with soundstage), and aren't all bad, but as a listening package leave a lot to be desired - they are too muddled to really hear the music. A good on the go solution if you don't want bluetooth and don't want to spend much, but not usable for desk listening if you have/are familiar with other options; sound just doesn't cut it.

So i got these a little under a week ago and I have thoughts. First off, I don't think they're as good as the KSC-75s. Most importantly, they don't sound as good, but they're also much less comfortable to wear for more than like, 20 minutes. They're also more closed, though that's a preference thing. However, despite my initial disappointment, I have discovered a reason to love them: I can listen to the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze soundtrack. SO BASICALLY, this is an incredible soundtrack and possibly David Wise's greatest to date, but there is so much treble murder, so anything I've ever listened to it on has just killed me. But these, despite not having super recessed treble, are actually perfectly enjoyable all the way through. It gets really close to painful in a few parts, but never quite gets there (and usually I'm wincing at those parts). I still think the low end is a bit over-emphasized and muddled, and so I don't think they're quite as great as you do, but...just that one thing is enough for me to love them at least a little.

So I got theese. They're really good! Out of box they're a bit muddy, but once clamp force weakens a bit sound becomes clearer. It's warm and "delicious" sounding headphone. That silicone comfort strap is excellent idea, very comfy. I keep these around speaker while not in use so clamp gets broken in. Faster way could be by heating the headband while stretching it. Very well done KOSS and Thanks Zeos for this convincing review!

Bass, mid range sound really good...the highs are good, too, but did benefit from a treble boost from the Schiit Loki. These surprised me with the quality of imaging and detail. These are really excellent headphones. I tested them head to head against Neumann NDH-20s and Sennheiser HD700s last night. On the face of it, a totally unfair comparison, but they held their own. More punchy, exciting, and mid-focused than the Senns, with better bass. More overt and...I guess you could say compressed, than the Neumanns. Comfortable. Easy to drive. Fun to listen to. I plan to use them at work, so them being cheap really helps. It appears I finally have a replacement for my aging Sennheiser PX-100s.

So I just got these the other day. I love them! They're a warm and cozy lil headphone for music. Though the clamp does cause the pads to dig into my ear and make them hurt. The clamp will likely reduce overtime so that's fine, and I'll consider getting Yaxi pads too.
They will likely replace my SHP9500s as my daily drivers... as soon as I can get a 4-pole extension cable (I have a 3-pole cable but it doesn't work with them well)

alright guys, got myself a pair and yes, these are definately 5 star headphones for the money. would be 6 if the cable wouldabeen detachable. they are made for running, you have no cable noise what so ever and you can't feel them on your head at all. the sound signature is a bit muffled but you can lift it with little EQ in the higher trebble regions to make it sound more natural. they do sound like the typical koss coloration you'd expect but in a good way. they have super fast transients and exceptional punch with the proper songs. love dubstep on these

Really? You have to be fucking kidding me! I will receive them in a couple of hours..
I have the HD600, and what I really miss on them is more low end, better soundstage, and and a bit more of warm ( the warm can be added with tube amp though); HD600 has great imagining and separation but the soundtage is below average for an open back headphone,
Unfortunately, I've not been enjoying the HD600 as I did before cause I've acquired many IEMs like FH5, DM6 etc which their sound signature are warmer and smoother, I got used to them too much. The HD600 are very neutral and analytical to the point where they are now sounding too boring despite the amazing treble, mids, and details they offer.

You're totally right in that all the best Koss products are just short of perfect. The Porta Pros have fragile hinges and cables, which is good enough for me, but is why my son no longer has a working pair. I bought the KPH30i as a replacement, and then got another pair for me when I heard how good they sounded. The KPH30i with thicker earpads and removable cables would be flawless. I'd buy the KPH30i again (and again) even if I couldn't mod them, but the idea that people would buy these $30 headphones and then tack on $15 Yaxi earpads and $15 plug kits and cables, plus take the time to modify them is a sign that there's a market for something just a little more upscale for these brilliant headphones. I still can't believe these are $30. What would $45 get me, Koss?

The treble seems a bit recessed, but there are consequently no weird peaks to my ears that I often find in headphones so they are very easy listening. I prefer listening to some tracks on these over my HD58Xs. Theyre also extremely light and comfortable, I have no issue with clamp and it almost feels like wearing nothing.
