  • It was so fun to watch the brown boobies as they used our boat as a tool to fish! At least it was until they attacked us with bird poop.. Come sailing with us for some nat geo fun as we make our way to Martinique!

    WHERE is the "FIVE THUMBS UP" button??? That may be the best sailing episode by anyone anywhere on TH-cam. Thank you so much for making and sharing this memory with us. A few times I have said there will be memories of sweet moments of adventure that you will be thinking of 50 years from now. There is a good chance that one of those moments took place on this passage. Godspeed Adrenaline and her crew with fair seas and warm steady breezes.

    In this world of manufactured reality, where even news and documentaries invent scenarios to fit a predetermined story, it is so refreshing to see your videos of real life sailing the Caribbean! The good, the bad, and the ugly! I feel for you when you can't catch a fish, or have to clean bird poop off your boat, or deal with stressful moments anchoring or leaving anchor. Thank you for sharing!

    Great video production as always.
    Ben on Sailing Nahoa talked about fishing from their CAT about a year ago. He said that he includes a 'hookless noisy lure' a few feet ahead of the end of the line lure. He said the noisy lure can bring fish up to investigate and then results in a higher probability to strike your fishing lure. He has produced some monster catches so you might want to see if you can locate his fishing segment or reach out to him. Good luck!

    Sierra, years ago jazz great Al Hirt was on the Johnny Carson show, and Johnny said he'd heard that Hirt went deep sea fishing out of New Orleans. Hirt said yes, often, and Johnny said he had no luck, maybe Hirt could give him some pointers? Hirt said sure. You go out with one ice chest full of cold beer, and a second full of dynamite. The trick was to remember which one to toss overboard.

    My 2cents about fishing for Mahi......Mono leader (60-80#) and mono line. You need the shock absorbtion when trolling. 5 - 4" plastic squid on the same leader, the first 4 are 12" apart. The 5th squid is 24" from the 4th squid and has the hook. The rig flaps on the surface teaser style, looks like a small school of bait and the last one is the laggard. Put it 50' max behind the boat, you are fishing for Mahi not tuna. You boat is the first lure the Mahi see. They swim over to see if there is any bait under the structure if they can't find any they move on hence keep the lure in the wake. Those flying fish looked like a good spot for Mahi. If you get one on No yanking just cranking. The hook wallers a hole in their jaw and when the line goes slack (yanking) they will spit the hook. Tight Lines

    I have only fished in the ocean once . However I have fished in Canada's lakes . There are fish with teeth here that can cut the line and that is the reason we put a metal leader on the line. You are fishing in the ocean and as you know many fish have teeth and so they can either bite the line or the teeth are kind of like saws and they just rub against the teeth and cause it to break so I suggest you use the metal leader .

    Always use a metal leader since there are wahoo, barracuda, and more predatory fish that will snap through normal mono / flouro. They are usually made for saltwater and are corrosion resistant. It is impossible that the entire leader dissolved in saltwater as you may have thought. Some say that the fish see the metal leader - so they opt to heavy (100 LB) mono / flouro instead.

    Wire leader?:
    Depends on what you’re fishing for. If you have toothy fish around or targeted then wire leader is a must.
    Mono on its own is very stretchy and pretty visible. Braided line is a great alternative, although, if you’re in rocky areas braided line will chafe very easily, but in open water either is fine.
    If fish are finicky and skittish a top shot leader of fluorocarbon would be good. Maybe like 6-10’.
    The weight of line depends or target species as well.
    Knots depend on what you’re using but in your mentioned scenarios I like using the double palomar knot and improved clinch knot to swivels and lures. To get two separate lines knotted together I like using the uni knot.
    Good luck!

    Use wireleader for wahoo or king mackerel. But monoleader for mahi and tuna. Best lure color for mahi for me is mahi color. Something about there own color. For wahoo purple. Tuna is a mix bag something with lot of action.

It's a long square rectangle lens to look into the ocean from above the water ,,silicone the glass into one end of the square folded rectangle lens bodyshape And glue it in. Use seven strand coated wire with crimp fittings when your lures get cut offs. 100-200 pound test fluorocarbon isn’t too heavy for offshore trolling if you don’t want to use metal. Good luck.

  • @bubbagail7450
    @bubbagail7450 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Maybe you need to lower your speed a little, you seem to be in go fast get there quick mode, which is good but not so good for fishing in some cases depending on the lure. 5 to 7.5 knots is good for normal trolling mahi-mahi type fish a little faster for tuna and so on like i said depending on the lure how deep it will dive or if its skip and splash type, you do need a wider variety of lures. Good luck.

    Guys, I know that you got lots of advice on the fishing leader. I have used both and have caught fish on both. Flourocarbon 2-300# is great and v. strong for most fish but if you fish nearshore in areas like the Bahamas where you are likely to pick up toothy fish or if you are fishing for King Mackerel (they have teeth), steel works well. I use the bronze as I think it is less visible. Some say tuna are finicky and like Flouro but I have caught plenty on wire. Your choice but if you use Flouro, inspect the line before putting out the lure just to make sure it hasn't been too chewed up. If so, replace it so you don't worry about loosing that trophy or your dinner. Hope that helps.

    Recommend 60-100 lb braid to metal leader using a clinch knot.

  • @RIDETHESUNSHINE
    @RIDETHESUNSHINE 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For toothy Critters always use wire! There are dozens of videos on TH-cam for rigging up and drag setting, to whatever is available in your area. If you hook-up into a big fish, drop your sails, or pull out of gear. Never horse a fish in! There is less chance of a break-off, a fish spooling you. When you get a chance, get rid of your cadmium plated hooks. A lost fish with a cadmium hook in him, is a fish waiting to die, not to mention a few hundred yards of line to wrap around props, shafts, and hapless sealife. Please Be Well, and Stay Strong, Will, and Karen

  • @Northerngulf
    @Northerngulf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Use small steel leaders if you have toothy fish like mackerel around, but the knot at the main line and leader will create a bubble that looks like a small minnow, and fish will hit that and cut the line. That's usually the cause of losing a leader. Don't use a swivel, and tie direct line to leader.

    I'm presuming that you're using braided line on your reel.
    Always use fluorocarbon leader as it's flexible and strong.
    the most important not is the knot you make between the braided line and the fluorocarbon.
    And open ocean you probably want to use 60 to 80 lbs fluorocarbon. If you're going too fast say over 5 knots you're going to end up catching a lot of barracuda.
    You need to get your artificials down further which is quite difficult if you don't have a downrigger.
    What I would do is when you're under way is to have somebody cast with a spinning rod using a spoon you can sometimes catch Jack's that way.
    Always use high quality hooks like Gamakatsu, not inexpensive but high-quality and hooks stay Sharp.

    Try seeing if your lure is running straight and not like a propeller. And try different types. in the caribbean fish like shiny objects the sun reflects very well on shiny lures try using squid skirts pink or purple. For deeper /darker water try a darker lure like a dark blue or dark purple 700ft to 1500ft for shallower water 300 to 500ft or so try yellow / green or orange lure. There is a lure we called it a spoon it's basically just like a stainless spoon works good as well. Over here we have a line with weights every feet of line we call it the Rosario. In our language it means the plastic necklace with a cross on it or simply like a prayer. Because it gets the fish out of the deep. Mostly for wahoo tough.

    Use mono leader unless you are getting cut off. If your getting cut offs then go to singe stran wire called toothproof. Mono 80 or 100lb test. When your back in Florida hit me up I can hook you up and give you some tips and techniques

      I guess by abandoning ship they wanted to imitate la vagabond which didn't work because it's what it is an imitation of which there are many whilst Tula the Trawler was one of a kind original so it was a unique channel..

      @@salahalsulaiman What in the hell are you talking about?! You obviously know nothing about this channel! The trawler was named "Neverland"! They sold her to an older gentleman and made a video about it! "Neverland" never sank or got abandoned by anybody! You need to put the crack pipe down and get help!

    Better to go mono or Fluorocarbon you will get more bites, because some fish are leader shy and they can see the wire and won’t bite, but you have a better chance of getting your lure bitten off from fish that have teeth like kingfish ect. If you don’t use wire, I would go regular mono leader, good luck 👍🏻

    To respond to Sierras question about tackle i am not a professional but have done my fair share of Sailing /Cruising through the Carribean and the Florida Keys where you get many strikes from Barracudas with lines out i always used Steel leaders in other waters i do use Mono leaders BTW i tie my Steel using Needle Nose pliers and Attach all my Lures onto Swivels with quick connects as a optimist i generally use 80lb test although ive been made fun of by Marina freinds and Buddies when i pull out a rod /Reel Loaded that way to troll in the Chesapeake Bay because I’m rigged for such heavy fish of course when cruising it would always be awesome to hook a big Tuna or Bullnose Dolphin that you could share with others i n a popular Anchorage i have witnessed Barracudas taking half of my hooked fish before i could get them into my boat especially in The Bahamas using Skirts along with Daisy Chains in which i personally am not convinced work but as a superstitious Fisherman deploy for good luck as my Daisy Chain was given to me by a great Angler /freind

    I think you might have your lure to far out. Bring it into inside the last 2 m of the boat wash.
