Agreed. While it's fanciful to notion oneself as "the best version of everyone else" (i.e. 'Canada should become the 51st state), that's hardly productive and generally untrue. It just reeks of ego. It shows a great deal of humility on Peterson's front to not get defensive to the point of hostility at what Trump is saying, and instead use it to introspect.

I just responded to another TH-cam channel the other day who kept saying (of Canada): "we're stronger together".. and the hosts of that channel live in Ontario. My response was "I'm not so sure that's true for the West... and I'm pretty sure it's not true for Alberta". Then I called into the radio here in Vancouver on the same topic today and described our "federation" as "the east's boot on top of Alberta's neck while they go through her pockets taking everything of value". Dr. Peterson and I seem to agree on this matter - but no one cares what I have to say. So thank you @JordanBPeterson for saying it! Such will be the challenge for heir-apparent P.M. Poilievre - to implement with "Trumpian Rapidity" a plan to revitalize the Canadian Federation... because as Dr. Peterson points out... Alberta certainly, and much of the West could gain much by separating. Maybe that's Trump's plan all along - to entice Canada's West to become "the 51st State" and leave the high-maintenance, left-leaning-and-voting east, to their own fate.

When asked what I think about the whole notion of becoming the 51st state, it's been asked as a joke, but I've found I can get people to seriously think about it by saying:
"You mean I could say whatever I want without fear of legal reprisals, and anyone who takes issue with something I say I also have the legal protections to adequately defend myself and the people I love? That sounds like a damn good deal to me."
Everything else is a mute point. Healthcare, diversity, none of that matters. Do you have the right to express yourself in whichever way you see fit? and do you have the right to defend yourself and the people you love? Neither are guarantees in Canada, our charter is routinely thrown out the window all in the language of "reasonable limitations."
What can Canada offer it's citizens on the base level which makes it more compelling than America which offers REAL guarantees?

I'm deeply disappointed by the current state of affairs in Canada. As a proud, West Coast-born and raised Canadian, I cherish my childhood memories of national pride. While that pride remains, recent political decisions and the current climate have significantly eroded my optimism. Living in British Columbia, arguably the most beautiful province in the country, has become disheartening. We face a growing crisis: the prevalence of fentanyl addiction, skyrocketing crime rates, and foreign investment driving up housing costs to exorbitant levels. At 31 years old, I earn $43 an hour, yet I'm still forced to live with my father because I can't afford a home or even reasonable rent. It feels like a cruel joke. I long for the days when Canada was a global leader, or at least a close second. I recently saw a video of a protest downtown, where someone proposed a "super drugstore" offering access to hard drugs like cocaine, fentanyl, and ketamine. The idea is appalling. Is this really where my tax dollars should be going? Furthermore, the concept of publicly funded gender-affirming care, particularly for children, raises serious ethical questions. How can we, as a society, allow such procedures? It's disturbing to see Canadians seemingly indifferent to these issues, yet quick to criticize the United States for considering tariffs. While I'm not personally in favor of tariffs, and I certainly don't want Canada to become a U.S. state, I feel lost and powerless. What can we possibly do to reverse this decline

I was an immigrant, helped myself and my elderly parents, put myself through school etc… I paid my dues so I am the “good immigrant”. I am hopefull this is still possible
Even though others hate immigrants, I saw in my city of Vancouver, local mom/pop groceries and restaurants open up which bring prices down and some take care of their grandkids while the parents work elsewhere. The small business has boomed.
Ultimately, we can just control ourselves and see opportunities. Ownership is overrated; I hate my strata fees and wish the government has a tax break on it but they are too busy arguing about small petty things.
The governments have to align and be less arrogant and ignorant (ie learn less from the Americans).

It surprises me that so many Canadians are supportive of this drivel. I get it, Canada in a lot of ways really sucks (especially at the moment) it's an expensive nanny state, that's squandering it's abundance of natural resources and has a deeply unpopular leader that needs to go. Even ignoring the fact that we are about to have an Albertan Conservative Prime Minister,, Canada already is an amazing country and in many ways better than the US. There is a reason that Canada ranks higher in life satisfaction. One of the causes of unhappiness in the US is the fact that it is so deeply divided. JP is seeking to sow that division in Canada (while ironically residing in America) he's also blatantly looking to profit off this division (which is evident because he has enabled the "thanks" button above while already being a multi-millionaire). I liked him better on the benzo's, he was way more relaxed, now he just comes across as an uptight angry American (sorry I know that's offensive please don't tariff us).

Well said. Most Americans, including President Trump would rather have a strong, independent, self-sustaining best friend to the North.
We don't want a weak family member that we always worry will not be able to protect himself from a cruel, insensitive adverse foe(s) from the West.
America is the LEAST or non-existent concern for O Canada. We still are your best friend.
Treat us so. Keep up to your end of the bargain in defense. Produce wealth to build a vibrant infrastructure of manufacturing that we Americans can readily buy. Don't force us to look elsewhere for our products. Let us keep trade in North America. Don't cut us out of your markets under the guise of self-protection.
We have the same exact founding, history, heritage, etc. Both America and Canada need to remember...... and always be together, yet separate.

He’s shifted from being a thought-provoking professor to a full-blown ideological performer. Instead of challenging people to think critically, he now fuels division under the guise of rational debate. His early work was about personal responsibility and self-improvement-now it’s about playing culture war referee, feeding the outrage cycle, and reinforcing the echo chamber that keeps him relevant.
He knows exactly what he’s doing. His audience isn’t looking for nuance; they want confirmation that their worldview is correct and that they’re victims of some grand societal shift. And Peterson delivers, carefully picking battles that rile people up while avoiding any real critique of the power structures that actually dictate their lives.

Of course the 51st state is not a nice option to say the less, but definitely things have to change NOW and completely. Canada is a great and beautiful country. Immigrants have abused of good will. It took me 5 years to get my PR and I have met several that just arrived and pled REFUGEE. You know the story. Thanks Dr Peterson. Always a pleasure to learn from you. What good is Canada, where I was born and raised, as a country anymore Dr. Peterson? I am a young Canadian with two degrees and 5 years of experience in software development. Why would I want to be Canadian anymore? No one can answer me this in a way I find reasonable. Housing prices are out of control, I wanted to start a family and have children and yet how can I when I can't secure shelter? Grocery prices are frankly absurd-- I am inspired by your daughter and her diet to help my own issues and yet there isn't the faintest glimmer I can afford even the cheapest cuts of meat at the store. The economy and job opportunities here for a software developer are so few and far between and even in those positions we're paid half that of our USA equivalent job role. ... In saying all that, why would I even want to be Canadian? I've been stripped of any and all dignity I could possess. I am frustrated. I see the news and I feel saddened not even rage I just feel saddened and disheartened. We've fallen so far off the rails.

As an American, THANK YOU! You get it Jordan, and that’s because you LISTENED. It’s sad cause a lot of Americans generally love our fellow Canadians, but in the last 10 years or so many of us have questioned if they actually even like us. The funny thing about the “friend” remark, especially said by certain Canadian politicians that tried to bring this up to us Americans about why we are going through harsh tariffs, down to bringing up the impact 9/11 had on both both countries, it how none of them stopped to address the low blow of letting Canada allowing terrorists on a watch list to be allowed to reside in their country. Which in turn these terrorists use that to their advantage to hop over to our country that Canadian authorities lose track. It’s why I have not been impressed with Canadians talking down to us Americans, for me this is the tipping point where I ask fellow Canadians to rethink if this is how “friends” act?
A lot of Canadians seemed rattled that Americans are directing tough action that is equivalent to the harsh penalties of Mexico but trying to down play their role. Meanwhile I have to constantly bring up for all of the issues Mexico has brought to us, there were more terrorists found by American authorities from the Canadian border than the Mexican border. Friends don’t gaslight the other like this, as they certainly wouldn’t set up a scenario to repeat one of the worst days of our country to re-experience.
Really the only region of Canada that has stepped up, as a partner and a true friend, has been the Albertans. A learning more about the plight the rest of Canada has forced them through, I say they are the only ones worthy to be allowed to be part of the United States of America if they so wish. In all honesty though, would prefer to see if Canadians can self reflect and fix their country before such actions. Americans would like to focus on our own mess, however this continuous charade of the condescending, both to us Americans and Albertans, should at least be addressed.
We at least have the big picture to understand the west is in decline and the free world depends on us, whether we like it or not, so while Canadians can harper on about “Why are you doing this? I thought we were friends!” meanwhile us Americans see the relationship differently. We love our fellow Canadians as family, as much as Canadians love to bash on our culture and how much their culture is superior cause they get to be the “nice” country, our cultures are more in link than most Canadians care to grasp. Our cultures are more like brothers, similar principles with different takes. To us Americans, therefore, we are going to have to go to the tough love route. Many Canadians are pissed at us, but at this point Americans have grown used to being seen as the bullies, we’ve become immune to it now. Our priorities is to restore our country, and revive the west if possible, so we’ll take that label of being the bully if it means it will help get Canadian’s act together and we then get the chance to actually fix our country.
