This is a life saving Ted Talk that every woman needs to watch. We aren't told or taught this ... mine comes on so suddenly and it's such a debilitating spasmodic pelvic floor pain. I have other comments and I'm sorry for your pain too and wish u healing...I thought I was the only one
I didn’t even know how to relay what was happening to me. So thankful I did come across
And not just women
YES! Say it louder for the people in the back! I had no idea about any of this until my pelvic floor started acting up. My daughter is 10 and I’m teaching her about her body early, because this is ridiculous. I wish someone had told me...taught me.
I’ve just been diagnosed with hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction, I’m 20!! It’s stolen the last 3 years of my life away from me, it got so bad that I was in constant severe pain every second of every day, it’s horrific, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy - I wish more people knew about this. Now I have a pretty good way at controlling the pain and I’m doing pelvic PT, I’ve been doing it for almost 2 months now and I’m starting to notice some improvements!! There is hope Xx
i’m 20 also and i’ve been dealing with it since i was 18. i feel the same way and i also have hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction and had the same severe pain everyday every moment no break for so so long. i’m so happy we can come together and see that there is a way out
Addysuun definitely!! Please keep me updated on your progress. My journey with physical therapy has been up and down but I feel like I’m getting somewhere. Men deal with this too and it’s a nightmare, especially considering most doctors have no idea what they’re doing.
Yh They just laugh at you and tell you its all in ur head
That is true. Sometimes it includes suffering from sxual symptoms as well which make it more difficult to deal with.

Working out is so difficult. I wish I could go back to my old life . I know a lot of woman go through this . It’s hard but I am managing as best as I can .
@@jessicalarsen7094 Ohh nooo Jess! Hang in there 🙂
@@jessicalarsen7094 Give it time. Take it slow. If one exercise hurts, have your pt adapt it to your needs or move on to another exercise. I spent 3 years in pt. I still need more, my case was really bad. It took over 2 years of dealing with constant pain after abdominal surgery. Every doctor I saw said I was making it up. Until one day my bladder seized up and I went 21 hours without being able to pee. A new Dr in the er diagnosed me and then finally, I was listened too. The pt I have is amazing. She was able to help so much. I still have problems with pain, but that is due to adhesions from the surgery. I'll always have pain, but pt has helped me decrease it to where I can stay out of the hospital. I wish you the best of luck.
@@jessicalarsen7094 how are you doing now? I have the same condition I'm in really bad pelvic/bladder pain can this all be tight pelvic muscles?
Do you take Gabapectin?
Pelvic floor physical therapy has been life changing for me. Didn't know that all my issues were related to one thing and was finally able to find relief after having this for a few years. I got too used to the pain, until it got so bad that I had to seek help and thankfully I chose a physical therapist. So glad I did! Also paired therapy with yoga and it has been incredible, they work together so well. I share with all my friends about this issue, it goes undiagnosed way too often.
Did you experience bladder pain too?
Now your better what is solution
Thank you for this. We need this talk to be seen by more people.
Just listening to this relieved the spasms and the unrelenting pain i am suffering from for the passing few years.
Thanks for talking about it. And for somehow mentioning in the things that men also suffer from this condition.
Dr. Rader changed the way that I view and deal with my pelvic pain. She gave me the knowledge and tools to assess, confront, and overcome a sometimes-disabling condition. This is the first TED Talk that's ever made me cry. She is amazing!
We are going to get through this🙏🏻We have the power to heal, find a pelvic floor therapist to guide you and practice mindfulness as well!! These are mind+body conditions.
2 trips to the ER in excruciating pain this past month, morphine helped tremendously, my pain was off the charts. 2 doctors and a male urologist clueless and writing prescriptions for hyper motility of my intestines which I knew it wasn't. Trying to explain this pain radiating up from my bladder not knowing what it was, all tests negative for infection, 2 CT Scans negative and I decided to do my own research. Thousands of dollars later and I know what the problem is, now to find the right doctor to treat it!
Hi there ! Just wanted to tell you, you’re not alone and you’re not crazy. I’ve had this condition for years. 3 ultrasounds, a CT scan, multiple infection tests- all normal , and countless trips to the ER I started to this I was nuts. I started having symptoms when I was 18 after episodes of panic attacks. Took years to get diagnosed. Can’t say I’m doing a lot better- but many days I’m actually not that bad anymore. Starting PT next week. Just thought I’d share and tell you that please don’t over think and don’t think you have some scary incurable disease. You do not. It’s literally just your muscles. You’ll be okay and well again. Lots of love ❤️
@@yuliaevdokmov8587 Thank you, your post actually helped me figure this out and find a doctor who knows what this is. I have just started PT with a therapist who specializes in pelvic floor pain and I am hopeful that it will be better. Best of luck to you 😊
I also spent time in the ER not knowing what this was. Excruciating blackout pain worse than labor.
I had to go to five Doctors to get the right diagnosis. My last Gastroenterology informed me that it could be muscle spasm, and he recommended to a Male PT. I just had one session with my PT. I still have 12 visits to go. I keep my fingers crossed. Hope the pain will be reduced!
Story as old as time. I bounced around from specialist to specialist trying to figure out what was going on. Finally I mentioned it in passing to a doctor at my university. He knew the problem immediately. He has seen it with some of the schools athletes.
Did you do any therapy to help it?
I have had pelvic pain all weekend and am trying to get into see a PT in the next couple of days. I do believe that our mental and emotional state can have a bearing on us physically so I had a reiki session as there was nothing more I could access to help me yesterday. The session released some emotions in me surrounding relationships. I think it helped a bit. This morning I’m about 50 percent better.
I thought that I had problems with the nerves from my pelvic floor. Had unbearable pain for 3 days. It turned out I had gall stones stuck. Be careful with diagnosing yourself.

I just started pelvic floor PT and was amazed by the difference I felt with the progress. I have chronic pain (endo, Vaginismus, PCOS, a number of other reproductive pain issues). It took me three weeks of sessions to release a single muscle and I nearly cried, because for the first time EVER when my PT probed the relaxed softened muscle it didn’t hurt. I’ve never been able to use tampons, medical exams were a nightmare, and thank god I’m asexual because that sure wasn’t on the table, but even exploratory curious attempts were met with frustration and angry brooding while laying a hot pad later on.
I wish I had decided to go sooner, and I hope I can continue to see progress. Im already so grateful to my PT for the baby steps I’ve taken so far, and my goal is to lessen my day to day pain!
I’ve been in pain for a year and a half. The Urogynecologist couldn’t really help. Until it was suggested I go to physical therapy today. Setting up an appt ASAP!! I finally figured out what my doctor couldn’t tell me.

Yes. I've suffer from anxiety since i remember and im 39 years old now. And i have many issues with my pelvis. My chiropractor keeps telling me that is in my subconcious mind. I also had very bad pain attacks In my pelvic floor for about 3 years. When I got after a few years heavy pain under my left shoulder blade I thought it was a compressed nerve. After a few days I got finally pain under my right rib and I got fever. It turned out that my pelvic floor pain were gall bladder attacks. I misdiagnosed myself for a few years. Problems in the area of the liver can cause pain in the pelvic floor or under the shoulder blades in my case. There is a long nerve, the phrenic nerve what can cause heavy pain in the pelvic floor or anywhere in your back, neck or head if the problem is actual in the gallbladder, liver et cetera. Maybe that is also something to exclude in your case! All that years I didn't have pain in my stomach. That only started when my gallbladder was heavily inflammated and also my pancreas and liver started to get inflammated. My gallbladder is removed and no pelvic floor pain at all anymore.

It took me 3 years to be diagnosed. I was 15 when I fell down the stairs on my tailbone. I would get what to me actually were "attacks" and develop sudden excruciating pain in my lower abdomen. It felt like I was being knifed. No one knew why. I suffered like that for 3 years because of how uneducated drs were 10 years ago. Most didn't even know what pelvic floor dysfunction was. I had to go to the Cleveland Clinic to be diagnosed and told to get physical therapy. It's so sad how so many needlessly suffer. I'm glad to see this horrible condition is finally being given some light.
How are you now? Have your symptoms started to improve yet?Xx
@Jack Lampin what do you have exactly? hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction? it never “goes away” completely but is much much much more manageable.

For those doing physical therapy for your pelvic floor dysfunction is anyone doing internal electric tens stimulation? The idea is over 4 sessions some sort of electric current is applied to the pelvic floor muscles to over stimulate them so much that they finally just stop spasming. Does it ever heal for good? I have hypertonic pelvic floor after a traumatic birth & 4th degree tear. I have graduated from PT recently and they sent me home with my exercises, my tennis balls, my pelvic floor wand for massage. But I have to keep doing my exercises every other day or the pain and tightness returns. Soon my son will be 2 years old. Do I just keep up this maintance for the rest of my life? I'm having a hard time accepting this. 😩
Hip fracture (amongst others) after being waltzed over by an SUV last year - fell back onto tailbone on concrete. Went to many orthos/conventional doctors, no one asked about bathroom/bedroom. Sent me to muskuloskeletal and sports med but sure enough mris did not show hypertonic pelvic floor. Told me it was psychosomatic and to go to therapy for ptsd. Id steer clear of conventional clinics who see three dozen patients a day. Maybe try an osteopath for continued PT referral if your plan requires it.
I was stubborn and persisted in my research. (Note, I did not give birth and have no other humans to take care of allowing me to obsess over healing.) I knew the pain getting worse over time was not normal. I was following Hannah Bower on IG and she has released a course on fit mama/pelvic floor. I purchased that in the meantime while searching for a private practice PT. Huge difference in care. Went to two private practice pelvic floor PTs bc one had a 3 month waitlist.
On first visit, internal exam and manual release, 40% pain reduction. Went home with a wand and more perineal massage. Pain did return some but now I know what it is.
The other pelvic floor PT also practices John Barnes Myofascial release. Her internal exam and release on me months later was much gentler and intuitive. We focused on nervous system down regulation and diaphragmatic breathing + some myofascial release in surrounding structures like abdomen. Gentle version of „gut smashing“ (look it up) with first a sock, then deflated ball on bed, now moving on to a firmer ball on couch before progressing onto firm surface.
Breathing correctly! I was „reverse breathing“ and still do a lot but practice diaphragmatic breathing at stop lights or whenever I remember. When your system is working as designed the PF lengthens and shortens with breath.
The cue that did it for me was „yawning the sit bones“ upon inhale - which relaxes the pelvic floor. Or „breathing into your lower ribs“, „360 breathing“. Pain dissipated to a mild dull ache for months before coming back (but not as bad) most likely due to stress/nervous system response.
We are continuing to do breathwork. Discovered weak iliacus/psoas so we are working on that too so the whole system can work together. Starting Rolfing SI soon bc I have other injuries above&below hip. The body is smart and I have full confidence you can make a full recovery with the right help!!

I’ve been suffering for over ten years. And I had pt once but it didn’t seem to work. I’m working on my issues on my own now with what’s on the market. I will be seeing a pelvic pt soon. Constipatjon and frequent urination. I also feel like I can’t complete a bathroom trip. It has been a thorn to my existence. I believe I have sciatica and cant sit down for long . I also injured my tail bone but my issues started after childbirth. I had it up to here I need professional help
Hey did you find any help with pt? Am also suffering with severe tailbone issue even after coccygectomy
Chiropractor? Osteopath? childhood trauma deep therapy? Andofcoyrse physical therapist
@@kaajalsharma1225 yes I’m currently getting help from a pelvic floor therapist and it has been a roller coaster of improvements and sometimes me setting my self back. But education is key. Did you try seeking help yet?

hi ma'am
Its agony
Man suffer from this condition too but no one cares
I can't get past the idea of allowing a physical therapist to touch me down there. That's something I won't allow. I'm 67 and dealing with high tone pelvic floor muscles. Very painful. Gynecologist diagnosed it. I'll never go back to a urologist.
I have prolapse the spasm are unbearable make sick and cause diarrhoea constipation at times. Only thing that word is CBD oil
I suffer from Chronic Pelvic pain . What can I do about it in order to finally get rid of it ?
Go to a good pelvic flour physiotherapist and also use your own brain and also see a urologist or some doctor . If you have sharp needle like or burning pain then you might have pudendal nerve , it can also be cured with good physiotherapist of pelvic flour
go to a pelvic floor therapist :) eventually they will teach you how to do it at home manually or with a pelvic floor wand. this helps to release the pain. good luck! i feel your pain literally and figuratively xx
@@quellerox Thank you for sharing this with me !
Use special cushions for it , see pelvic health channel and others also on TH-cam, also see donut or round shape cushions, as per your need
This is actually funny. Yeah these Drs, aren't trained for this. Because it's not necessary. Don't you think they would have if it was.
It's sad that empathy can't be bought
