Type R is the pinnacle of hot hatches but the i30n is 80% the way there at a decent saving.
Depending where you are, up to 25-40% price savings are well beyond decent.
@@georgemavrides3434 95% there?
I agree.
More than 80%
Don't you think the fl5 has gotten way too big to be called a hot hatch? It's like 3 series compared to a 1 series.
Has to be the Type R, amazing car the N is but type r, interior, styling and performance are all superior imo
Also costs more, overheats and sounds shite
Do these guys know anything about the type r put in custom mode put suspension in comfort everything else in R mode then you have all the benefit of the R mode with softer suspension makes a fantastic car.
You say the i30N misses out on lightness to the steering, but you’ve left it in its stiffest setting. Use N custom to put suspension and steering in normal, and the rest in sport plus. That is the correct way to enjoy the i30N.
Exactly. Dumb
Don't worry, we didn't just drive these cars in one mode. We tested out multiple settings and played with the individual modes of both. Even with the steering in normal mode the i30 N isn't quite as fluid and fast as the Type R when it comes to steering. Honda really nailed the fine details here, but the Civic's precision plays off against the more playful nature of the i30 N so each has its strengths.
- Kez
just a suggestion but perhaps tone down the music volume in between coz you suddenly pump the audio too loud and then u switch back to the presenters talking at normal volume.
Stupid comparison, $12k will buy you a lot more, i30n was built to be fun not mega fast.
The i30n is faster in a drag race 0-100km, its faster than the Civic Type R. The Civic is only faster around track ?
So not to sure what you are on about with your comment as it does not make sense.
@@GoofySmuf wrong way around my friend, watch drag races civic type r is much faster, I know I own an i30n, they are faster around corners.
@@sugarskulldigital7769 I own a i30n and I have not seen one that I dont gap. That manual cant keep up with the DCT. Link me 1 vid where a Type R beats a i30n DCT. You live in LALA land.
@@sugarskulldigital7769 I doubt you own one otherwise you would have noticed as well. You are obviously a fanboy that doesnt own either of them. Just another pen and paper warrior.
@@GoofySmuf well I do, I own a 2018 manual in clean slate, it's quick but it's not the quickest
FL5 all the way. It ticks all the boxes. I’ve owned a FK8 for three years, the car is unreal. The FL5 will be a track monster no doubt.
Good comparison, guys.
For $12k less drive away, I'll hang on to my i30 Sedan N...
The DCt is quicker than the Honda.
@@mharro88 even better then cos mine's a DCT!
In Europe, the Type R is a good 15k euros more (~41-42k Vs 56-57k). Love what Honda has done there but they need to grab those dealers by the b@llz!
@@mharro88off the line its quicker but on the run the Type R marches straight past it
@@mharro88 Way quicker lol. Saw an Elantra N decimate a golf R in a rolling race
Plz do more comparo videos like this.....👍👍👍
Type r by i mile! if you can’t afford it doesn’t make it a reason to say it’s not a better car. type wins in every category price is subjective and alway subjective 2 million dollars cars they cost 100k new it’s out there once again price is subjective
Price isn't subjective, look up the meaning. Price is relative and relevant, not subjective.
@@jvvoid if you can’t afford it buy something eals simple. Price is subjective is a Ferrari Porsche or Lamborghini worth 2-3x the MSRP?? You will always have someone saying it’s not worth the money yet someone has bought or will buy it. Point of the story is it’s worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. No different than your house. Buy what you can afford.
It's the type r for me but that's because I have the fk8! I like N too, brilliant wee car. Hardly a fair comparison tho.
FK8 owner here, brother. Had one for three years. It’s a fabulous machine.
Comparing cars that far apart in price is ludicrous & it needs to stop!!
Imo it just proves how under rated that i30n is
20k aren't a little bit....
I30N for me any day of the week
Ooh. Those FL5 wheels are already curbed 😬.
How does this premium limited edition N Line Hyundai still have a analogue cluster when the new N models have a digital display cluster.
Are these left overs of the old series 1 models with some additions to justify a premium price.
I love both, but the Type R is a bit too long a wheelbase for right country roads where I live, and it’s got a vacuum exhaust that sounds like trash
Id still put my money down on the n 100%
Careful what you wish for I know someone that blew an i30N engine.
bullshit and if it were true they fucked with it
Have mine since august 22, love it very much.
@@Crownleyian There's good reason why Hyundai set aside 2 billion dollars for warranty engine repair late last year. This was before they were addressing the USB 'key' issues... There's a lot going awry with these cars, fine if you treat them like Audi's from the 90's and early 00's... Have your fun and sell before warranty expires.
Had my FK8 for three years now and I’ve pushed it hard. Still going. 400bhp+ love it.
if you do track days the type R overheating issues needs solving. the i30n does not have the same issues. can be solved.. but the track day warranty on top of it its hard to go past the i30n.
Red interior doesn't make it special, makes it irritating. Red isn't a relaxing colour, it's 24/7 agitating.
Oooh a sticker pack!
Just needs a Nurburgring sticker ;)
CTR barely a hatch when you put them together.
And the whole money no object thing is stupid, it’s everything. The civic is simply not $12k+ more of a car. My Kona N was only 2sec down at Phillip island against two CTR’s recently, and I’d say that’s simply power. Korea is the new Japan
i30n wins easily for me
Lol
Lol you and the other 20000 people who got one
Both brilliant, N for me 💙
GR Corolla / Yaris
72k for the type r, I thought it was around 30k 😢
You can't even buy the base for that money pal
For these prices I’d definitely buy a gr Yaris. I own a N drive N and a gr rallye, the N is disappointing compared to the gr. Torque steer and axle tramp is shocking. Terrible in the wet. Only downside to the Yaris is the size, but a excellent drive.
For these prices I wouldn't buy any of these cars or the Yaris you mentioned.
If you're still on the Pirellis in the N, some better rubber will fix some axle tramp and most of the wet traction.
As i live in the country neither are practible for me for 74k i would get a BT50
In that case you should check out our BT-50 off-road video: th-cam.com/video/2eOCweURHbw/w-d-xo.html I reckon that might be a bit more up your alley
- Kez
Compare the type r to the i30 sedan n which is a newer and better performing platform? Weird.
That car is right next to it.
This was a tough call, but we wanted to keep this comparison 'traditional' and have a hatch versus hatch battle. We weighed up the merits of i30 Sedan N and i30 hatch and leant towards the hatch for this video.
- Kez
The hatchback just looks better
Take the $12k and upgrade what you dont like
like any one buying these cars is paying cash 😅
@@damienfrizzell9394 true, but they can save on the monthly repayments
How much did Honda pay you for this review???
Hang on to your tinfoil hat, Honda paid a total of $0 for this review - or any review. Our editorial outcomes aren't up for grabs, and our review team is wholly independent. If Honda paid, we wouldn't have said anything nice about the Hyundai (that's usually how those types of agreements work) but we loved the i30 N, it's just that in a few areas the Civic Type R is the better hot hatch - but of course you pay for the privilege.
I rather spend 45k and Get a i30 then spend 72k on a type r and get a Little extra power. and save 28k in my pocket
You’re not getting an N for anywhere near 45k
Type R for me
Imagine picking a trash hyundai over a respecable brand like honda. The hyundai will need 3 engine and Probably 2 trans to make it to 100k miles. The honda on the other hand will still be on the original engine and trans. Lets not forget resale value, you might as well burn your cash then pay for a hyundai youll never get it back. The honda on the other hand its already selling used for 15k over sticker
You're stuck in the past. This is 2023, the type r is not worth that price difference and it sounds like a hoover. Hyundai N division isn't a joke. No one is buying a type R at that price. If someone is willing to spend money like that the GR Yaris/corolla is a better choice than the Type R. The engine will last just as long and resale value will be better.
@@ulysses4989 The N will never hold its value like the Type R will. Just look at older Type Rs from the early 2000s. They sell more than what they were purchased for. Pedigree doesn't come cheap.
@@santoshrathod123 But the type R is overpriced. Realistically who is buying a Type R for 70k??
@@ulysses4989 i did and so did many others. It's in the ballpark of the GR Corolla, Golf GTI and R etc.
@@santoshrathod123 70k for a type R is insane. Unless you're on the track often I see no reason to spend that much on it
Both are overpriced, the car price bubble is deflating
i30 N is fun car.
Type R is not fun car.
What are you smoking. They're both very fun cars. The i30N sounds better
Please. Type R’s are the definition of fun. They’re built to be hammered and if you are a good driver they are bloody amazing cars to drive.
Huyndai i30 is such an ugly car, trying to fit in.
Lol The Type R has been an ugly turd from day 1...
and WRX
@s is 😂
No way you called the i30 ugly lmao.. haters gonna hate
You should compare it with a car with the same price. In the Czech republic I bought a brand new i30N performance sport manual in shadow grey for 30k euro (one of the last on stock) and the new civic costs 57k euro, that is not a comparable option at all!!
