What I also love about the canaries positioning is that it absolutely obscures who's in charge, making it harder to single them out and possibly adding to the Island lord's sense of overwhelm. Cithis is at the opposite head of the table, facing the Lord most, and looks very serious. But it's Lycion who's practically draped over the throne and talks to him very directly. But Pattadol summoning the fairy gives the sense that she can command the waiting ship. Meanwhile the actual leader, Mithrun, is in the middle and silent until he takes up Kabru's challenge.

Why is no-one talking about the ear-twitch and movement of Izutsumi when she notices the ghost. Exactly how often cats act when noticing something.
Also how she notices the presence, I'm not sure if it was just because she's half monster, but any cat owner knows that cats do act like they see ghosts at times.
She even widens her pupils from slit to circle when looking at the ghost.
Again, total cat behaviour when a cat notices something and is ready to jump.
I feel like it's often overlooked, and I overlooked it myself on my first read, but this episode shows Kabrus skill with people. He tells Toshuro that elves were the cause of Utayas fall in order to gather him to his side to confront them, however when he faces the elves he fawns to them, explains that despite their best efforts a lot of ELVES (emphasis on elven casualties as we know elves are dismissive of short lived races, even unintentionally) died in the aftermath, then mentions he's a survivor of Utaya. The elves here know his adoptive mother Milsiril and respect her, and are immediately more welcoming to him, and he further aligns himself with the elves by saying he wanted to enlist in the canaries but there was a racial barrier. Meanwhile he's explained to us already he wanted to become and adventurer to make sure Utayas massacre and the elves hostile take over is never repeated. Kabru subtly plays everyone to get what he wants, and he does it so well the audience doesn't even realise what's happening. I love Kabru so much...

Oh my god the bell is just ring ring ringing constantly is an amazing addition I can’t believe it was cut! What were they thinking? I know it would constant with the vibe of the episode but still I’m devastated
It also makes the world seem way more real, as this bell isn’t some kind of magical plot device, it literally does as it is said to do and realistically rings over and over at the bottom of Laios’ bag like a bell would. It’s a great detail.
@@DanS044 even if they couldn't animate the scene of kabru and toshiro talking about it just putting the Bell sounds would have been perfect, with the context of the previous scenes people would know its Laios keeping it like e gift lol :')
I have full confidence that since they bothered to set up the gag it'll pay off later. Wouldn't be the first time they've shuffled things around for time and pacing.

I NEED to talk about the milk a minotaur joke. This whole episode is so heavy with jokes when we cut back to the main crew. When we hit the golden country, it is joke after joke. All hitting with great timing, and the dub actors sell it so well. Then when we finish one joke with Chilchuck and we're almost at the point we're getting sick of them.
*thump* *thump* *thump* The sound effects wrench your attention. The sudden burst of anticipation as the door slams out and Laios begins shouting in a slightly quickened tone in the exact same tone as he talks about living armor. His sheer excitement of what is objectivly just milking a cow. I don't think we'll find a funnier joke in this series.
Or just the childlike wonder when Laios gets to touch the minotaurs nose. Cows are just neat.
im just sad that in the dub they missed the milk -> woman joke
And Chilchuck's deadpan response was perfect in both the original and the dub.

I also love the joke afterwards where when laios notices marcille in the dress and is gonna speak to her they made like a fake ship-y start to the scene as laios says "marcille.." even with the blush in their faces, then it's shown that actually he's gonna talk about izutsumi
The design of the elfs was a really interesting way of getting you to think about their personalities, like why only 2 of them don't have nicks in their ears?

ryoko kui's character design is so incredible. if any of you haven't already, i suggest looking up her daydream hour bonus comics where she breaks down her character design process and talks about how important it is for characters to be recognizable even if you change up their hair or clothing
the big spreadsheet she has with just all the different eyes she's drawn, and how you know exactly who's they are despite them being unlabeled, is absolutely incredible
She's amazing.
I love how when Marcille says she picked the most tame outfit and we see the three little outfits one is just belts galore and she even has one wrapped around her head. Feels very much like a Final Fantasy reference since so many outfits are pretty "belt-heavy" in the series.
Buying the Manga is the best way to get a second season going, so buy it. You're even get a few extras, like monster encyclopedia entries and such, great stuff!
I don’t think there wouldn’t be a second season, the show runs its _full course_ and will end in a few episodes.
Now if you mean the author making more manga in the same world, she might want to move on to a completely different story and setting.
Regardless, she gave us a damn good manga so hopefully it sells well.
@@mangasaint They must make a second season, this season will only adapt halfway the (finished) manga (around chapter 50) and it would be sad if they didn't adapt the whole thing (It also has one of the most satisfying endings in manga, so really a shame if they don't go all in)

The canary designs are all so good. But then all of the character designs are good. Kui could never be accused of same face syndrome. You can look at the pages of eyes or mouthes she's drawn and just go "Oh, that's Laios, and there's Senshi, and I recognize the design in that iris." The entire cast is so distinct and memorable, while still being recognizably part of a race with genetic peculiarities.
I'm really hoping they fit all of the Bacon and eggs chapter in, the last shot of that chapter is such a good place to end the season.
Very Much looking forward to dragging my anime group through the next episode too, they are Not Ready.
This episode showed a lot, but none of it felt rushed. This lower level really didn't seem to be uniquely anything other than some basements, so changing the location to the ghost world brightened it up. Meanwhile, the politics on the surface and Kabru's past exposition gave me such chills that I only remember having when watching some special anime shows. Brilliant episode and I am excited to see the next three.
I still remember ages ago seeing the "they let me milk a minotaur!" Laios panel on Tumblr. I thought "Oh are they a himbo that milked a male?". Its still really funny seeing the scene now with context because its like "Oh he's a himbo but he's also a little freak" as I say that with affection and autism.

2:33 The blonde one is the only character I've found in Dungeon Meshi, who looks remotalty familiar to another character, who is Marcile which I believe is super on purpose to make you think about their physical traits for a reveal later.

The two-page spread of the Golden Kingdom left me gobsmacked. Other than some basic tones for shading it's all hand-drawn. I can only wonder how long this one image took her.
One of the clear winners of anime adaptation is that tattooed elf dude. In manga he's just ... there, but in anime he's a fucking art piece, jacked up so nobody would mistake him as a girl.
Bro, you've got to be the best anime TH-camr I've seen. I love your technical analysis on art and animation. You put real effort into covering the nitty gritty details. As a result, I am learning things about animation and art every video. I was drawing something and your technical advice about powerful light sources and how they create shadows from a few episodes ago was helpful.
Once the art and anime communities get wind of what you are doing, I think you can become massive.
I absolutely LOVED the canaries introduction. They happened to have some of my favorite characters in the team, so I went into it with high expectations. safe to say they were met! I appreciate the fact that they basically redrew the panel with all of them in it without making any changes. Like you said, it was already perfect, ryoko kui's ability to differentiate and show a character’s personality through body language is phenomenal. The anime really nailed her style. Pattadol's suprise at Mithrun's command while he walked up to Kabru was SUCH a good moment, I really felt that tension. The fact that they decided to show an upwards and a downwards angle to show both of their expressions through their differing heights, kabru; although he is the taller one in this scene, looks anxious and uncertain while mithrun; the shorter one, looks determined and confident, is a really good contrast. The voice acting in this scene is also great! I listened to both ENG and JAP dub and they were both delicious, although finding out that otta and fleki's voices felt like it got switched was unexpected, but I ended up liking this change!
It's a damn shame we won't get more canaries moments until the second season, but this episode reassured that they'd do a fantastic job with them. Great video as usual 🥰
I love the few seconds of animation(?) of Laois rushing to tell Chilchuck that he milked a Minotaur. When he burst through the door it looked so jank to me that I kept laughing at it and replaying those few seconds.
You made Egg Benedict just to check if the animation was correct?! I am in awe to your commitment in to making your videos superb (and correct!). I always enjoyed your thorough video containing wealth of animation techniques/knowledge, mentioning who was the animator etc., but wow!
I was WaITING the entire episode for Chilchuk to lunge at Laios even when it got to the end and it didn't happen I was like "surely next episode right? right?" so sad...
One of my favorite episodes so far, a really solid exposition arc that kept being interesting and exciting despite the lore dumps. As you said, the small flourishes in animation made it sooo expressive despite the simplicity of the big picture. Really establishes that there is a wider world instead of putting all the focus on the main cast and big action, detaching the protagonists from the world around them, a thing I think is quite common in most shonen anime in particular. The grounded style of Dungeon Meshi along with the focus on the mundane, including the animation, really sets it apart from the pack.
What I really loved:
- The small animation highlights
- Best pacing along with ep 3, 8, 11, 12, and 17. Considering all those are very action heavy with incredible animation, this was an incredible achievement for this episode in my eyes
- Yaad's plea was much more pronounced, epic, and ominous than the manga in my opinion
What was a bit lacking:
- What I've said about the worldbuilding and love for the mundane is a bit hampered by the exclusion of the dock-scene. Random characters voicing their thoughts of the situation is great grounding work
- I didn't get the same feeling of unease in the Golden Country as I did in the manga. Few short scenes of ponderous silence with a more foreboding music choice could have done wonders on that regard.
- I wish some of the stills had just a bit of movement, you know, even for the elves, eyes twitching, heads turning, someone munching on something. This anime has a lot of stills and being an anime, just a tiny bit of movement in shots like these would better highlight the medium IMHO
On a personal note, you are pushing these out at an incredible rate and consistency. Please don't burn yourself out! Feel free to take a week of a break if you need more time for yourself. We can wait for your greatness
I love the adorable little fairy, I love how the horn of the unicorn growing from lower on the snout makes it reminiscent of a rhino, I love stupid sexy Senshi, and I neeeeeeed the uncomfortably sexy elf man.
I actually thought that mithrun was a woman, until I got confused when someone used "him" while talking about him :'D his my fav character of the show, even tho I like all of the main cast. He's... Funny.
If I calculate the chapters right, we'll see him again on the last episode of this season 🧐✨ maybe. Hopefully.
This week's episode ends before senshi's backstory, and next week backstory + changelings.
I dont know why Laios was so reluctant to consider he was seeing ghosts, considering his sister saw them since she was a Child
Probably because he considered that Falin got that side of the family genes (or something) and he wasn't left with much
Also because Marcille straight up said "you're experiencing mana sickness, there might be some side effects" and since he only started seeing that ghost at that point he thought it was more of a long lasting side effect to using a part of him he never did before, like getting sore for a long time after exercising wrong, especially since he didn't really stop casting since then, Marcille has been teaching him off and on screen since then, he didn't really have a proper rest

That fucking space outfit felt SO damn trigger lol, it was honestly a surprise it was in the original manga. No wonder adapting this was such a perfect fit for them.

When the Marcille star dress scene, it literally reminded me of Trigger, and i was expecting Kill la Kill soundtrack. (cause i didn't read the manga) Also, i think the senshi fan service was very well done, i think it's the first time in the anime we didn't see him with the helmet, it makes him really look like a dwarf.

Another *wow* moment is how the anime adapted the way Maizuru is changing Shuro out of his armor, combing his hair and shaving his stubble while he's in full dialogue with Kabru. In the manga her actions are so subtle and the dialogue is so engrossing that I didn't even notice it happened until I went back and reread it after watching the anime episode. In the manga we don't even see the shaving, just the before & after of his face.
I will miss having this episode catchups when the season ends.
Already itching for the next vid, I'll let you cook.
