Realizing that Marcille's homeland is Italian-themed gives _so much_ great background to her squeamishness with dungeon food. She's from a culture that deeply respects good food, with high standards for ingredients and recipes. Giving her dungeon food is the equivalent of giving a Neapolitan pizza chef a barbecue-style pizza topped with spiders. No-matter HOW great that pizza tastes, the chef is still going to consider it an affront to everything they stand for. The best you'll get is a begrudging respect.
ah... Italians and their legendary contempt for every improvement or even slight deviation from og recepies of their indigenous food. So what if the cream makes carbonarra taste better?, still HERESY!!!!!
@@temerenomine9698 While this stereotype is absolutely true, so is the fact that many of these "improvements" come from cultures famous for having very low quality food standards (like the UK or USA). So it's not that their opinion is worth much to an Italian. Plus, many traditional recipes have dozens of variations depending on the area in which they are prepared, so the belief that Italian cuisine is very strict and precise is totally false.
I'm betting the bit as with Kabru's party will be added back in but as the beginning of the next section with them. We'll see a shorter version of the fight where they get wiped, then they'll wake up and have their conversation about Laois and co.
@@SpiritofLibegonCan you explain how they revive? If people can die and revive, why are they afraid of Laois sister dieing, when she can be revived anyway?
@@marweha7002 They talk about it shortly in an earlier episode, but there's a limit reviving. Anyway, when I first saw the episode title and knew they were due 3 chapters again I got really apprehensive. But you are right, unlike episode 2 the way they choose to cut and rearrange the chapters actually created a cohesive story that didn't feel like 3 unconnected miniplots rushed to fit into 20-ish minutes. It is actually a great episode!
@@HellecticMojoThat is most definitively not the case. First, we are getting two cours, so at least 24 episodes. At this rhythm it will way overshot the dragon (which will most likely be the midseason finale). Also, the production started before the manga ended, but it only finished after and that was deliberate. The author had said that she didn't want an anime before the manga was done.
@@HellecticMojo Dude, we're getting the dragon most likely by episode 12. Thematically this episodes do something that Avatar: The Last Air Bender does that i think a lot of anime fails to do. It establishes the relationships of different pairs of characters it shows the Marcille x Senshi dynamic, and a little bit of Chillchuck x Laios. I think in avatar there's at least 1 episode for each iteration of pair of characters to show us how they interact with each other. Also this got me thinking, Senshi has some very impressive kill track record so far. Senshi: Kraken, Kelpie, Ghosts, Golems, Basilisk, Mandrake, Slime. 7 (8 if u count how he easily handled the giant parasite) Marcille: Kraken (she should get an assist for the spell), Blade Fish (well everyone helped), Living Painting, Treasure bugs, Giant Bat. 5 Laios: Kelpie, Living Armor, Basilisk, Man Eating Plant. 4 (Laios is kinda sleeping, but that's normal for an in-game leader and u know he will clutch when u need him most) Chillchuk: Mimic, Traps (true to the don't count on me for fights). 2
AtLAB and this one benefit from a 'monster of the week' style of storytelling between epic climactic confrontations and moral dilemmas. These days, both in manga and anime (espeically since anime builds off of the manga in many shows). there's an expectation for easily over 90% of the chapters and episodes to leave off on a nail-biting cliffhanger to draw you into the next episode. It works to draw in your audience, but you have to constantly move at a breakneck pace, and the story is always actively progressing. Character development has to happen mid confrontation (usually fights) or offscreen, the latter especially being a real missed opportunity. AtLAB and DinD have the benefit of a beautiful combination of both a relaxed pace of travel and an inevitable ticking clock that lets them travel slowly while also having purpose in their travels, and a desire to get there quickly. There might be an epic disaster they need to avert, but they can only travel so fast, and it's during this time we get the best character interactions because we actually have the time to explore them.
“Autism strikes again” it does, it does (I laughed at this bit, ahaha). Another great breakdown video! This episode gave me hope that the team has the ability to rearrange things when needed. I can’t wait for next week! “Raspberries” is definitely one of my favourite chapters. I’m crossing my finger for some good animation 🤞
Wow I love how you broke down the parallels between Marcille and Senshi cooking moments, I hadn't really considered the importance of that scene, and that scene as a motif! These videos continue to be amazingly well balanced, love the mix of animation breakdown, pacing, and plot breakdowns.
Every week after the new DM episode, as soon as you release a video, my partner and I go "New Swamp Jawn!!" And we are so excited to watch together. It's been a treat to see the channel thrive...a feast for the eyes...
Been looking forward to your breakdown, and as always, it was great! Didn't realize that Chilchuck tossing away the fishman's head led into Senshi straightening up...pretty cool, thank you for pointing it out! And appreciated the focus on Senshi readjusting the skewer! & Agree about it being disappointing that the Marcille soap-making sequence was cut, and that some of the shots in the manga trailer were cooler :( (ALSO loved the alarms sounding at "Italian Elf" ahaha)
Dungeon Meshi gets better by every episode and knowing what's coming is making me so excited to see how Trigger handles it. I know that they've already put a lot of what is to be expected in *that* situation in the first trailer, but there's so much that's yet to come and I believe, seeing what Trigger has managed so far, that it's gonna be epic.
In defense of the slightly less dynamic shot of the Kraken under them: Cephalopods don't really do that tentacle thing when they swim, espeically not more squiddy cephalopods like cuttlefish and co (also, squids lol) and it always bugs me when it's done in fiction. I could have excused this since the kraken is some fictional branch that mixes octopoid and squid features, and maybe it needs the extra propulsion from using its limbs, but this is a series where a lot of spotlight is put onto the biology of the monsters so I'm very glad they went with a more realistic option purely from a biology nerd point of view I do wish we coud have seen the city, but at the same time I really like the Kraken beint in silhouette (if anything I think they could have made the edges less cohesive to emphasize it) and it wouldnt make sense to be able to see the golden city's rooftops and not see the kraken at the same time.
Once again, you point out another detail about Laios autism that I didn't realize he had. Arranging people in a neat row, not recognizing a human face but easily one non-human one because that's where his interests lies, trying to sing to the mermaids, that's all clues we are given. That's the right way to make an autistic character without screaming at the top of the roofs. I once again realize the talent of the author. They also cut the undine monster isn't it? Or I think that's next episode? I am not sure.
Having not read the manga (and not really planning to--I'm more of an anime person) I appreciate the background on how the manga was sliced up and rearranged. It worked well enough that I didn't notice anything out of place. Heh heh, the good news about the omissions that you point out about some of the scenes is that we have you to help shore it up. Definitely noticed when you complain about something not being done a certain way and you just... do it, to illustrate how it would have looked instead (like Senshi's mouth moving and some parallax and tree movement). As always, these are just so good and I'm really glad you're still doing them.

I'm gonna be honest, I think it's pretty nice that they didn't go into detail about what Marcille was using the kelpie fat for as it gave a bit of mystery of why she wanted it and why when all she did up to that point was complain, why on earth did she want raw fat and was working so hard on something? It let Marcille show that she really does know things and it didn't have to be spelt out what she was doing as she had been talking about missing her special soap before.

Even when you think it's hit it's ceiling, it will literally break it and wow you. As privileged as I feel to be able to experience the manga before the anime, I recommend anime watchers to be patient for the rest of the show to be released because hoooo boy, it's worth it, and I would use an actual genie wish to experience this story in anime form for the first time.
This was such a cool and informative breakdown!! It’s the first time I’ve seen a channel do animation commentary like this and i appreciate the discussion of all the cool details of the direction/ shot composition and the under lighting!! Subscribed! ❤❤
The magic of the first couple episodes was lost on me partially because I had already experienced the best twists and worldbuilding details from the manga, but just like the manga, the anime is quickly building that momentum as it examines the characters and puts a voice to the compelling writing and dialogue that makes the series so amazing. I am in SO MUCH anticipation for THOSE scenes, the ones that perfectly set up the series for the best twists and worldbuilding details, like the perfect set up in volley ball for the striker to absolutely demolish.
I've been reading the manga along with the anime, and I think its really sad Marcille lost her cooking montage. That feels really important to her character, especially since it'd show how much work and effort she ultimately puts in to making something for someone who is relatively still a stranger to her. They've been in a party together for only a week or so, assuming we've seen all/most of their meals.
The thing I'm most excited for every week after the new episodes is your breakdown videos! I love this series you're doing, and I really hope you take off.
I will never forget watching Magi Labyrinth of Magic, and seeing a nursing mare (badly drawn on its own merits) with… a cow’s udder. Every bit of goofy horse anatomy I’ve seen in manga or anime since has paled in comparison.
6:27 Well not completely. He is shown to be incredibly reckless with traps and also his way of getting rhe mandrakes was faster but caused them to not taste as good. I do agree though as someone who has not yet read the manga that a scene showing the work marcille puts into her craft her making the soap would have been good.
Looking forward to seeing Team Kabru's adventures in the next episode or so. Remixing the chapters into their respective teams makes a lot of sense to keep narrative flow.
Btw Jawn, how likely do you think it'll be for them to re-insert Kabu's group eating shit after their revival? In the Manga Kabu has a moment after revival where he recalls the Fishmen attack, could be perfect for a flashback?
Oh I thought Senshi's conclusion about being a part of the ecosystem was him reflecting on the Kelpie incident. Like he failed to see himself as potentially food in the foodchain to her and vice versa. He's still kinda right about some of the magic, if you blast all the fish, that's a food source gone even if something else comes along to eat. Gotta be responsible and protect an ecosystem even more once you realize you're a part of it. I guess he's also including magic as a natural thing? He finally feels ok about the water walking and that's the part he's talking about then?
I hope is we don’t lose to much of the other parties as we go on. Having these different groups all moving around the dungeon really made the progress of our main party stand out. I get wanting to get to the big turn around, I hope we don’t trim off to much theoretical fat.
I always appreciate the details you show and thank you for helping me understand the structural decisions they've made more. Honestly I did not expect extra Senshi interesting shots that are anime original, but here we are. I do have to say I am mildly worried about the overall structural pacing of the anime: before we were perfectly on track to ende the season on chapter 49 with a total of 24 episodes in the first season and then perfectly conclude with 2 chapters per episode till the end in the second season of 24 episodes. As of now we have one extra chapter done compared to that, and I wonder what they'll do with it: leave more breathing room in later episodes? Have a single episode chapter? Cut even more later (though least likely I can't exclude that)? Nothing but to wait and see, if the Good Omens fandom has taught me anything :P
There were two back-to-back changes that I was surprised by, one that was good and one that was bad. (In my opinion.) When Senshi tries to ride Anne, they remove the single-panel cutaway flashback of Laios trying to ride a kelpie and being saved by Falin. I think that's a good change! The cutaway kinda ruins the tension of the scene by showing us what's about to happen. But then, they make Laios react *way* too quickly. In the manga, we see Senshi realize Anne is attacking him, and *then* Laios dives in. I feel it was an extremely minor change that undercut
So far this is my favorite episode. These chapters weren't that impactful in the manga aside from Marcille making soap but it was really elevated into one of the funniest and most cohesive episodes so far. One issue I did have with the episode was the jarring cut going from Senshi accepting magic to immediately fighting the blade fish. It felt like there was a piece missing to transition the tone between those two scenes
i do hope we get a small flashback of kabrus party against the mermen before they get revived again, we dont see that much of them interacting so it would be a shame to remove small moments like this where you get a glimpse of their dynamics :( its also a great setup for the later scene with the 'mermen', seeing them eat shit the first time makes that scene much more interesting, since by that point you only expect them to be a recurring gag
I am hoping that they go back to the Kaboru parts, but I'm also glad they cut it. He becomes an important character later, but I always find myself skipping his party's chapters early on. I think its because of where its placed. Hopefully they can insert those parts in a way that feels more natural
i kinda wish you didn’t mention some kind of turning point without warning. i kinda feel like i’m now going to miss out on a surprise i would’ve otherwise been really shocked by 😢
@@PrinceAzura i get that if the anime wasn’t airing right now. like with every series no matter how old the manga people won’t casually spoil plot twists with current airing shows outside of big popular anime but thats just people being malicious. I can’t expect spoilers without warning from a video like this that only seems to cover current manga chapters. comparison vids like this are really common and i’ve never been spoiled by them before
My b. I personally wouldn't consider it a spoiler, more of a teaser which at least to me, enhances the viewing experience by adding some anticipation without actually giving any information, but I suppose different people have different tolerances for that sort of thing. @swampjawn I was only slightly disappointed at most! Still really enjoyed the video. If the twist isn't that important as something like madoka then I'm just being over dramatic haha
I loved that in this manga/anime, Senshi is the character that got used for the fanservice shots. 😆 As a gay man, I am really tired of the typical fanservice stuffs.
It would have been VERY funny to have this (up to this point) chill slice of life-y fantasy anime and just at random times flash senshi’s full uncensored cock’n balls. Although they prolly would have to be pixelated to air in Japan 😔😔😔
My gay discord was furious about Senshi's boobs & nipple hair getting nerfed. One of them said "Look at what the straights had taken away from us again!!" 🤣
Actually i felt the comparison during the anime as i was watching. I did see her turning fat into soap and thought the drawf should appreciate the hard work. Nothing was lost. I say this as a guy who only watched the anime and never read the monga ..... Okay I guess something was lost The hair in the horse.. yeah I thought that was just green hair not kelp context on that point was definitely lost.

As privileged as I feel to be able to experience the manga before the anime, I recommend anime watchers to be patient for the rest of the show to be released because hoooo boy, it's worth it, and I would use an actual genie wish to experience this story in anime form for the first time.
@@connorjohnson8590 yess! i have a friend who's obsessed with the manga and i fully trust their taste
This was such a cool and informative breakdown!! It’s the first time I’ve seen a channel do animation commentary like this and i appreciate the discussion of all the cool details of the direction/ shot composition and the under lighting!! Subscribed! ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Marcille taking such big care of her hair and having it be so front and center really sets up something that will come up much much later :)
Your analysis are AWESOME!!! I would love to see you do this for Frieren.
I adore the thumbnail to this video as well as your unabashed pointing out of every Senshi panty shot.
Been looking forward to this vid since Thursday! Your insights make my brain bigger.
7:26 hope this line convinces my siblings to finally pick up the manga.
I will never forget watching Magi Labyrinth of Magic, and seeing a nursing mare (badly drawn on its own merits) with… a cow’s udder. Every bit of goofy horse anatomy I’ve seen in manga or anime since has paled in comparison.
YES!!!
Can't wait, thank you for keeping going!
6:27 Well not completely. He is shown to be incredibly reckless with traps and also his way of getting rhe mandrakes was faster but caused them to not taste as good. I do agree though as someone who has not yet read the manga that a scene showing the work marcille puts into her craft her making the soap would have been good.
GREAT SERIES MAN PLZ KEEP IT UP
I always look forward to your break downs!
Keep doing what you doing, I’m already a fan of yours after watching this only video!
I love the expression Marcille has in the anime when making the soap.
Every week I'm getting excited for the next episode
Looking forward to seeing Team Kabru's adventures in the next episode or so.
Remixing the chapters into their respective teams makes a lot of sense to keep narrative flow.
This is a good review, deforest a keeper. Hopefully we get more senshi
Btw Jawn, how likely do you think it'll be for them to re-insert Kabu's group eating shit after their revival? In the Manga Kabu has a moment after revival where he recalls the Fishmen attack, could be perfect for a flashback?
Yeah I was thinking that's a possibility too, could be a way to show an abridged version of the scene a little later, we'll have to wait and see!
Love the video keep doing it you will become big one day my friend
Ep 8 was the best one so far for me🤩
Oh I thought Senshi's conclusion about being a part of the ecosystem was him reflecting on the Kelpie incident.
I didn't even register that this episode is lit from below! 🤯
Amazing breakdown, as usual.
The cut scene with Kabru and crew is 100% gonna be in the next episode/whenever we get to them getting revived.
another banger vid 🔥 new favourite creator
There were two back-to-back changes that I was surprised by, one that was good and one that was bad. (In my opinion.)
When Senshi tries to ride Anne, they remove the single-panel cutaway flashback of Laios trying to ride a kelpie and being saved by Falin.
*that undercut a lot of the tension in that moment.
Interesting points!
I think this latest episode has certified senshi as my favorite character in the series.
Really good analysis you got my follow
So far this is my favorite episode. These chapters weren't that impactful in the manga aside from Marcille making soap but it was really elevated into one of the funniest and most cohesive episodes so far. One issue I did have with the episode was the jarring cut going from Senshi accepting magic to immediately fighting the blade fish. It felt like there was a piece missing to transition the tone between those two scenes
That transition was pretty abrupt, yeah!
Yeah, a good point
Bro just wont let go about that cut marcille content
9:15
why is marcille Italian?
I was on my period when I watched this episode, so when Liaos got sick, I was like "Same dude, same."
...I lost it when he started to sing
bold thumbnail choice sir
Loved the video and all your thoughts! Defs agree about losing Marcille's soap making ;-;
i do hope we get a small flashback of kabrus party against the mermen before they get revived again, we dont see that much of them interacting so it would be a shame to remove small moments like this where you get a glimpse of their dynamics :( its also a great setup for the later scene with the 'mermen', seeing them eat shit the first time makes that scene much more interesting, since by that point you only expect them to be a recurring gag
Dwarfs: Japanese
elves: Italians
Pls do episode 8
This video was rad
Thank you!
I think they gonna add Kabru's party got wiped out by mermen probably on the next episode.
Oooooh time to grab a snack and watch
I am hoping that they go back to the Kaboru parts, but I'm also glad they cut it. He becomes an important character later, but I always find myself skipping his party's chapters early on. I think its because of where its placed. Hopefully they can insert those parts in a way that feels more natural
I trust studio Trigger with a Berserk adaptation
i kinda wish you didn’t mention some kind of turning point without warning. i kinda feel like i’m now going to miss out on a surprise i would’ve otherwise been really shocked by 😢
I empathize, but you probably shouldn't be watching discussion videos on a 9 year old manga. Spoilers are going to be everywhere
I don't think you'll miss out on any surprises though!
@swampjawn I was only slightly disappointed at most! Still really enjoyed the video. If the twist isn't that important as something like madoka then I'm just being over dramatic haha
"maybe they burn all their drawings when they finish a production"
that's called doing a karekano
Whats funny is learn later laois *SPOILERS MAYBE IDK * is really into dogs. Like a lot. So it makes sense he remembers the kobold/dog man.
Wait what? What do you mean pivotal turning point? What's gonna happen? Now I'm scared, oh no
Plz do breakdown vids on all of Trigger plz
8:14 oh no, gainax lore 😅
Love the video
Bro how do u edit???
I loved that in this manga/anime, Senshi is the character that got used for the fanservice shots. 😆 As a gay man, I am really tired of the typical fanservice stuffs.
why did they cover that sexy man common
It would have been VERY funny to have this (up to this point) chill slice of life-y fantasy anime and just at random times flash senshi’s full uncensored cock’n balls. Although they prolly would have to be pixelated to air in Japan 😔😔😔
My gay discord was furious about Senshi's boobs & nipple hair getting nerfed.
One of them said "Look at what the straights had taken away from us again!!" 🤣
Okay, I have to know what this dark twist is at 5:07!
bro be patient and you'll get what you need!
Or you could read the manga, as it is completed and not that long (just 97 chapters) :)
you can wait about a month or two for the anime to get there oooor read the manga (gorgeous art)(completed)(only 14 volumes)
Why does the balance try to balance "Faithful Reproduction" with itself?
my only gripe is the localized title
'delicious in dungeons' is too awkward and wordy to say, it doesn't flow off the tongue at all
Actually i felt the comparison during the anime as i was watching.
Is it confirmed that Laios is autistic?
I love this show🤤
From your review I just concluded that Senshi is just a maledwarf waifu hence the panty shots. (Never watched the anime by the way)
...why is the start of the video and the thumbnail basically sexualizing Senshi?
Because what an excellent choice.
ned this kind of vid on frieren
Ok.
Watch the spanish dub
M.
And episode 8 is honestly BORING. At least for me
