Dungeon Meshi is fun, suprisingly thoughtful, and all around amazing adition to this already stacked fantasy season for anime. Twitch: / locklanstareyes Twitter: x.com/LocklanS...
Sorry, this was kinda thrown together but I did my best to bring my thoughts together! I'll be doing a larger review once second season drops! Also for those interested, I'll be streaming tomorow on twitch at 7pm CST!
If we desribe this story like gourmet... The chef serves us with one of a kind unique appetiser that grabbed your attention at the first place. Then between the waiting period of each main course dishes, we are served various light refreshment. On the end, the gourmet ended with a satisfying dessert.
I love Dungeon Meshi's gradual descent into horror. It's not a series about cooking, it's a series about eating, and being eaten. And it's not like you have any right to be surprised when they pull Falin's bloodstained bones from the dragon; after all, the party has been killing, skinning, gutting, cooking, and eating creatures since the first chapter, and no detail was ever spared for the way those monsters' lives were untangled and used up for someone else's benefit. It disarms you by treating a human character with the same brutal pragmatism it treats the animals they eat. And if the dungeon itself is a body, with a digestive system and an immune system, monsters amd adventurers roaming around like bacteria in the gut...what does it eat?
Laios is one of my favorite representations of a character with autism as someone with a brother who is autistic. Laios has a weird and extreme obsession with monsters and fails at reading the room, but he isn’t dumb and he isn’t so obsessed that he stops caring for his party. The issue with how many stories portray autism is they make the character completely incapable of normal human interaction instead making the character come off as completely alien and incapable of having any sense of normality. Laios doesn’t feel alien he feels like a regular guy who happens to have autism.
10:42 I went into this anime under the impression that it was a fun slice of life😭🤣. It was definitely still a fun watch but was way heavier than I expected going in😅
I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and this video in general. I'd like to say one thing though: Having read the manga (half way into the anime I realized I wouldn't be happy to wait a year or two for second season, it's just too good), I would argue Dungeon Meshi very much is a philosophical master piece. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but be ready to let it hit you I'd say...
Lol I'm not normally a stickler for name pronunciation, but this was killer for me XD For the future and your future reference: Mar - seal Lie - OS Chill-chuck The video was amazing work otherwise!
This is genuinely one of the greatest dunmeshi analysis(es?) I've watched! It also inspired me to rewatch it even though iv'e finished it not so long ago :)
Thanks for the video! It's a really nice and smooth recollection of the series which gives the needed time to every aspect of the show. Good job! I absolutely adore Dungeon Meshi. From the meticulously well crafted dungeon itself to coffee-spitting humour (Laios siren song, you'll always be famous), from charming characters who feel very real and alive to the animation and style of the whole show, full of expression. Dungeon Meshi is a darling of mine, I am so happy this show exists!
A good base to start from is the Shrek 2 game for GameCube. Since it's multiplayer, you could also add more newer game dynamics. It'd be a fun game tbh. Considering Mario sunshine is a thing I can see greatness if people took their time to develop this game
Laios is less zookeeper and more apex predator. They’re eating their way through the dungeon, and even at the end of the story he wins by eating the main villain.
@@genericname2747 you can read it as me saying the Mad Mage isn’t the main villain; I forgot his name and just said villain; I was being vague to confuse people; or I was talking in archotypical terms.
@@kokofan50 Mate, its really not that complicated. You're letting people know the main villain is eaten. So Laios is either a cannibal or there's another villain. That's a major spoiler either way.

I remember how a lot of people mistook this show for a shallow episodic cooking adventure during its first cour, which I mean, fair, but it goes to show how much audience that might've liked it a show loses by not frontloading its best moments

as someone w/ autism- yeah laois is likely on the spectrum 😭 he misses a lot of social cues and is awful at reading rooms. his monster knowledge prolly comes from a hyperfixation. he mentions a couple times he wishes falin were there so she could act as a social buffer between him and his party. i enjoy the show immensely bc he misses stuff i would miss lmao, but this time i can be in on the joke
