Update: Commenters have directed me towards the source of the clips in question, "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct." The video features a relatively even split between male and female devs, so despite me wanting to approach this without wanting to make any strong accusations, I can now more confidently say that Crowbcat made these creative choices with the intent of targeting or, at the very least, dunking on, specifically women in the industry. I would feel differently if the video had featured specific quotes from those people, in order to justify their specific appearance in the video. The entire video is a miss because COD has *never* been this super sincere franchise that older zoomers want to remember it as. It's always had a reputation as being the "mature" FPS game for kids. The only thing that's changed is what appeals to younger audiences. In 2008 it was Michael Bay, nu-metal, and brown-bloom filters. Now it's Marvel, pop-culture references, and rainbow vomit. The only reason people are worshipping World at War *sixteen years* after it was released is because it's a narrative tool for "le culture war". Conveniently, Crowb doesn't feature the Nazi Zombies mode in his comparison, nor does he showcase any other legacy COD games. It's really quite deceptive.

its definitely a weaker video but i think it's still right for some companies. i don't know anything about COD personally but i know halo got obliterated post-bungie. not that it's the women staffs' fault directly but the vision overall is heading towards revisionism and brownie points. it used to be being nerdy about the military and how interesting war is as a topic, but everyone theyve hired is all about jacking off the whole super soldier superman bit. and we all know creatives who aren't necessarily in a right wing space don't have a very good opinion about the military as a whole. i think marty is insane esp his views on israel and palestine and think he's senile at this point but there's no denying that love for military and right wing values helped halo alot during production.
Okay, I often disagree with with Crowbcat's videos in some way or another, but I think this take is really bad and it kinda seems like you're falling for exactly what Activision's strategy is with their hiring choices. Back in ye olden days, there weren’t a lot of women in positions of influence in gaming (positions you’d criticize if you didn’t like the direction a franchise was moving in, for example) and things are a lot better these days. But has it not occurred to you that this improvement is also part of a strategy that you’re unwittingly playing into? The old management was male-dominated, and the new management has a number of women in public-facing positions that are likely to come under a lot of scrutiny. They WANT you to think “Cowbcat criticizes the change in direction? Well, he included some women in his critique so he must be a misogynist.” We both know Activision has a long history of treating its female employees like absolute shit, do you really think they’re above cynically using them as human shields? They are deliberately putting these women in the firing line so that when Crowbcat shows Activision’s patent US20160005270A1 (the one where they use matchmaking to trick you into buying skins), you get distracted by the fact that he used some women in his B-roll, which he is going to because the women in question are a Lead Narrative Producer, a Senior Producer, a Senior Writer, and the Head of Brand Development. You’ve been played, man.
Actual valid points in there, but overall missing the point. It's not necessarily about the women or even CoD, it's more about the way he frames his narratives and how it can be problematic. I'm fully aware that there are problematic devs of any gender and Activison has been nightmarish -- I literally aired my gripes with CoD throughout the video. That's just not really the point
@@el_doinko I know you did, sorry. My point is that there's room for interpretation here, and that Activision has specifically cultivated the situation so that there is room to uncharitably interpret the criticism they receive as problematic. If they didn't hire women, Crowbcat's video would be nearly unassailable. But by setting up the situation so that the most available people to criticize are women, they have made it so that unless people like Crowbcat go out of their way to specify that the video isn't about women, people like you will go "I just think its kinda problematic how he singled out these women." He singled out the senior leadership of Raven software who are, by design, problematic to single out. The more time critics are forced to waste specifying exactly how their videos should be interpreted, the harder it is for them to actually make their videos, and the easier it is for Activision to keep getting away with their shitty business practices. P.S. sorry if the "people like you" sounded needlessly accusatory, the sentence just didn't flow well without it.
My goal rn is to really just find the source video featuring those devs. Because if it really does show like a majority of fem staff then I can feel less negatively about it. But if it's more 50/50 then I'm more inclined to feel like it was an intentional choice to make jabs at these execs and devs who all happen to be female. Definitely something I wish I did before I made the video but I couldn't find it at the time.
@@el_doinko He uses clips from several videos. A bit from 21:04 in "Making of - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 [Behind the Scenes]" From Eurogamer, and a bit from 19:29 in "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct" From the official COD youtube channel, among other sources I'm sure. Hope this helps.
@@hunted4blood thanks for finding those. Just checked them out briefly and yeah the high-up roles and interviews seem pretty 50/50 between male and female devs so it only makes me feel more like the choice was intentional. So yeah idk man, gross creative choices imo, but it is what it is.
Comparing old COD to new COD to showcase the devolution of the AAA industry is also ridiculously disingenuous. COD has always been the McDonalds of video games ever since COD4 attracted millions of kids and NFL dads. Suddenly we're supposed to treat the older games like national treasures just because standards have sunk even lower? I think I'll pass.
A measured response that acknowledges potential bias and offers constructive criticism without immediately jumping to accusing Crowbcat of being misogynist and clearly pointing out implications and showcasing video literacy? Yet again a Doinko W.
Crowbcat just make random videos about Video games, there no standards or rules to go by. And you are trying to set boundaries for him for some reason. Let the dude do his own thing.
Calling out behaviour that is somewhere between irresponsible to downright harmful isn't "setting boundaries," it's just observation. He CAN do whatever he wants, and I'll still watch it, because I'm still ultimately a fan. Never during this video do I say he has to do one thing or another.
Yeah this ain't it, chief. Activision showcased these people, he highlighted producers and head of departments meaning they're the ones with the true final say on where the product ultimately ends up going. All of the men were directors
See this is where it becomes frustrating that I can't find the source of those clips. What I would assume is there were equally high-up male devs featured in the same video but Crowbcat intentionally only included clips of the female devs. Which, intentional or not, is relevant to the integrity of how Raven/Treyarch is depicted here.
Did you look at any of the titles of said female developers? They're a little more than just developers, they're the ones controlling where the game is heading. It has nothing to do with their gender.
@@el_doinkoYou’re expecting too much of angry old men who would rather complain about women taking over “muh video games” than actually pay attention to something. I hate the current state of political climate that it permeates even video games. Blaming women for something is a cheap cop out when real issues run so much deeper. Like, let's take the 2016 failed ghostbusters reboot. The problem wasn't so much that the ghostbusters were women, but that it depicts men in a very negative light, making them either malicious or useless. Also that they only caught a total of 1 ghost in that entire film and they let it go to kill bill murray just out of spite. You can't build people up by tearing others down. Also there's that good sonic boom quote from knuckles about how when someone calls attention to gender roles that it undermines the concept of equality by implying it's an exception instead of the standard. And for the game industry itself, women have brought many great things in, but the past decade has gotten so sour with the internet having people echo chamber their stupid brain farts so that it obscures things, making groups of people who think women can do no wrong, groups that think women *only* do wrong, and then there are normal people who look at things at a case by case basis instead of blanket stating a general group (women in this case, of course) to be one thing or another. It's not women making unappealing designs in games, as we have women such as Mari Shimazaki who design characters like Bayonetta. And at the end of the day, if someone doesn't like something then don't buy it. I used to love Dragon Quest until the modern translations, so I... simply stopped buying the game. It's not hard. There are numerous other games out there made by real people instead of mega corporations like ...well, now CoD is owned by Microsoft, so them. Also when Activision was the owners, it really did feel to me like they were doing a "too many cooks" situation by essentially sentencing studios like Toys for Bob to the CoD dungeons.
I remember feeling a type o way when Borderlands 3 came out. I might be missing some parts but iirc the plot was dominated by female characters and the only male I can remember was Rhys, who is depicted as like incompetent, and the one male villain who is subservient to his sister. Idk if it was intentional - it wasnt detrimental to the story, but it was definitely distracting. If the intention was to highlight how women feel in other male-dominated media, i guess they succeeded. I just found it distracting because once I noticed it I couldn't stop noticing it.
@@el_doinko to be fair, the cast was fairly diverse amongst both men and women in earlier games, so it's weird they decided to essentially shelve or off-screen the men. Revenge isn't the best way to get equality, and only makes enemies more convicted against your own causes, which boggles my mind why people are so keen on being vengeful these days. gone are the days of discussion, now are the days of "other guys bad" Anywho, BL3 has way too many issues imo, and that's one of the most minor :p
From what I gather you’re mainly griped he used game voice overs over their real voices (which lets be honest is likely a vast improvement over the corporate jargon about the most innovative experience evar!!one1!) So you’re calling misogyny at ghosts.
I like most of his videos. Even the Resident Evil video other people hated on despite him not making the point clear enough. CrowbCat has always posted the odd awful video with biases and bad choices though. This was definitely one of them and I say that as someone who didn't like Black Ops 6. Call of Duty has definitely fallen and there are issues with it. He showcased some of them in clips such as how it lost some of its magic in many areas and the sliding for PC players and the common microtransaction issue that many modern day games face. Charging people money for better audio is the biggest sin. However, he's also unfairly nitpicking, which he's done in many videos. The Call of Duty multiplayer aspect of things were almost always goofy like that. This is why he didn't bother to show multiplayer clips from the previous games and only the campaign. Black Ops has always been a franchise where it's more over the top with that while Modern Warfare is the more realistic with it. Comparing the campaign to the ones from before and with the realism and horror of it is fine, but the new campaign had those moments too and has actually been one of the more well-received campaigns in a Call of Duty in a while. He decided to nitpick the worst looking and most awkward clips from it though that will always be awkward and weird when you play them out of context. And him choosing to show female devs, characters, etc. was definitely an intentional choice and feels like him trying to spin the narrative that they're hiring a bunch of unqualified feminists to make Call of Duty now and that this is why it's failing. Something he's done on many occasions as well. Especially when he watches and plays clips for videos by TheQuartering and other TH-camrs in that side of TH-cam.
@@el_doinko Not outright supporting them and their beliefs or anything, so who knows, but he does use clips for his videos of people reading off things or describing things and he's used people like him and others in that side of TH-cam many times. For that reason, he likely watches them. Once you realize that, it isn't difficult to now put the pieces together with how he falsely depicted a few things in this video by purposely showing only the females working on it and the most stereotypical looking ones to build a narrative out of it. Especially for that Cyberpunk 2077 video he made. I won't make any assumptions that aren't proven, but it feels that way.
ik ur getting hate but i appreciate this bc i literally had the same exact thoughts watching that deadrising video . i remember watching his old vids and was just super disappointed in whatevs commentary he was trying to give as a woman . literally just seemed like he was mad that you cant sexually harass women in the game anymore.
Yea DRDR was in a really weird spot and i get that they handled it strangely but the discussions around it were so crazy volatile. Really ppl aint afraid to show how messed up they are. Also the hate fuels + validates me and only proves the importance of content like this.
I took back my dislike because you actually were pretty respectful even though I totally disagree with you. Only part I can maybe agree on is him including Laswell from MW2 remake in the video. If memory serves me right she doesn’t even get to use the gun or do anything because some guy comes up behind her and takes her captive. Not really a strong independent girl boss moment.
fr the inclusion of those campaign scenes is really weird to me. I feel like a better comparison would've been the horrifying Shepherd betrayal scene from original MW2 vs. the really silly one we got in MW2 remake with Graves.
You are implying that the "visual storytelling" of Crowbcat's video has issues but you do not see the main issue of the modern corposuits literally skinwalking specific groups of people (like women, for example) for the sake of some quick fortnitesque buck on a really old franchise. Like, dude, don't think people are stupid, nobody sees the whole picture as "haha women" (look at Warframe, for example, people genuinely respect Rebecca Ford), the main issue that everybody is talking about is how disgraceful current COD devs are.
I absolutely agree that I dislike CoD's current direction, however idk much about the whole "skinwalking demographics" meme. Seems like a rabbit hole that i just don't have time to get into off the rip. Whether or not *people* see it as "haha women," my issue is just with the content with this specific video. I don't want to go beyond the scope and act like I can estimate what the greater community thinks, or even just Crowbcat himself. Regardless, the anti-female sentiment is evident with the choice of both the in-game clips and dev clips in the video. After this was published I did get to see the Black Ops 6 Direct where those clips came from, and it really is a 50/50 split of male/female devs, so the choices seem more deliberate.
YEAHHHH that video is iffy. Aside from him flip-flopping on the title i think the video itself is fine, I'll always love both games regardless, but I think there is more discussion that can be made there about cherrypicking what to include and exclude to fit a narrative
@@tritonmame1282 He caught some heat for the title, then changed it to something more neutral, then later changed it back. That's the main thing, anyway.
That’s a good catch. Everyone in the comments is being purposefully obtuse, but he really did only identify the women he showed to pin the blame on them, purposefully leaving out the names and shots of men working at the same studio.
Thank you for being a bit more subjective. Had to stop watching Crowb after their Sprint Vector vid because they were bullied into deleting the more positive aspects of the video and keeping the cynical vr portion. Seeing this video, it does seems like, while not outright stating it, Crowb has fallen into the pitfall of thinking modern gaming woes partly stem from the increase in female staff on games, which while im sure that affects company culture to a degree is NOT the reason for a lot of CODs (nor many games) issues with monetization, bad handling of inclusion etc. BO6 is certainly not an all around bad game but legit most if not all of the issues people seem to have with it is due to corporate greed moreso than playing into the idea of DEI ruining modern gaming. Ultimately seems like Crowb and their team are just kinda stuck in a corner on constantly making super cynical & negative videos and I dunno how much that's affected their video editing & topic picking process. But strongly implying female devs as a key part of the issue, especially knowing the fanbase he tends to attract, really sucks to see.
Crowbcat reeks of armchair developer who has no absolutely zero experience in the game's industry if he thinks the women being hired by *the completely out-of-touch troglodytes in management/corporate* who hired them are the reason why those games are bad.
Crobycat is dweeb with bad politics. All his videos are toxic in one way or another. He might have inadvertently have a good point with this one though. One of the jobs was "head of brand development" that job didn't used to exist when cod was good. Games were better when they were made by small teams of nerds, male or female. Now the industry has grown they are hiring different types of people for different reasons.
YES that video was a bad dive into his politics unfortanely, Ill just leave the comment I left on that video: Its not like COD was always this masterpiece of gaming, its literally just US military propaganda, and there is no nick minaj in the campaigns, if u want the old COD experience just play the fucking campaign, my dad used to love the old COD if I sat down with him today to play the campaign he wouldnt bat a fucking eye or think theres any woke shit happening, he would enjoy same as old, showing that the game has a couple of woman working on it like thats inhenrently a bad thing its just a super low bar, lost a little respect for your channel today. Theres a lot COD is doing wrong, from SBMM to catering fully to warzone now and destroying multiplayer experience but its not because there is a silly skin in the shop or cause theres a handful of woman working behind the scenes, I really hope ur channel doesnt devolve into conservative brainrot
Regarding campaigns, I do gotta point out that the MW campaigns have suffered just due to the existence of Warzone. So much of the plot has been moved to Warzone that the campaigns ring hollow at times, especially MW2. I didn't play Vanguard or MW3 so I can't speak on those.
@@GarridoPE The main issue with SBMM is EOMM. EOMM has generally killed off SBMM all in due to greed. Go read Activision's EOMM patent. It quite literally tells you what they can do with the game to increase retention. Even if that means making you bullets do less damage, and nerf your armor because little Timy struggles to use 2 buttons at once for that past few games. It's really sad that the game play plays and bases it's actions like a slot machine to keep people hooked rather than making a good engaging expirence with a proper matchmaking system.....which I would say is ZERO SBMM for casual, and letting ranked play have SBMM. And let's not forget the skins do have a purpose. It makes its MUCH easier to identify friends over other teammates. Or on the other hand be game breaking or P2W just for having better color matching. Either way, they should not be 20 damn dollars for 1, and should have a system to let them able to be earned.
i mean, from a story and character perspective it's objectively better. Gta 5 takes itself way less seriously and you might say that's intentional, but it does nothing to make the narrative any better, especially superior to Gta 4. Nico Belic is considered by a large margin of people a better protagonist than even CJ himself which is crazy because the amount of people that have affectionate memories of San Andreas is hard to even fathom. Gta v might be better as a "Gta game" if you will, but as a narrative driven game, 4 is superior.
@LuizGontijo10 crowbcat only compared gameplay aspects (in many of the comparisons gta v was actually better lol). and yeah, as a game, gta v is objectively much better than iv

I'm not super informed on the behind the scenes on Halo, so this was super interesting, thanks for sharing
Well, he included some women in his critique so he must be a misogynist.”
We both know Activision has a long history of treating its female employees like absolute shit, do you really think they’re above cynically using them as human shields?
So yeah idk man, gross creative choices imo, but it is what it is.

yeah those recent releases are misses but cod has been a blatant sellout for many years now so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There is just too much slop to cover
A lot of people covered those games already anyway
Im not subbed anymore

Yeah this ain't it, chief. Activision showcased these people, he highlighted producers and head of departments meaning they're the ones with the true final say on where the product ultimately ends up going. All of the men were directors
See this is where it becomes frustrating that I can't find the source of those clips. What I would assume is there were equally high-up male devs featured in the same video but Crowbcat intentionally only included clips of the female devs. Which, intentional or not, is relevant to the integrity of how Raven/Treyarch is depicted here.
3:18 bruh you should just stick to gaming
Did you look at any of the titles of said female developers? They're a little more than just developers, they're the ones controlling where the game is heading. It has nothing to do with their gender.

Revenge isn't the best way to get equality, and only makes enemies more convicted against your own causes, which boggles my mind why people are so keen on being vengeful these days. gone are the days of discussion, now are the days of "other guys bad"
Anywho, BL3 has way too many issues imo, and that's one of the most minor :p
From what I gather you’re mainly griped he used game voice overs over their real voices (which lets be honest is likely a vast improvement over the corporate jargon about the most innovative experience evar!!one1!)
So you’re calling misogyny at ghosts.
naw mate that's maybe a fraction of it
I like most of his videos. Especially when he watches and plays clips for videos by TheQuartering and other TH-camrs in that side of TH-cam.
ayo i had no idea he was putting up TheQuartering yo wtf that's so gross lmao
@@el_doinko Not outright supporting them and their beliefs or anything, so who knows, but he does use clips for his videos of people reading off things or describing things and he's used people like him and others in that side of TH-cam many times. For that reason, he likely watches them. Once you realize that, it isn't difficult to now put the pieces together with how he falsely depicted a few things in this video by purposely showing only the females working on it and the most stereotypical looking ones to build a narrative out of it. Especially for that Cyberpunk 2077 video he made. I won't make any assumptions that aren't proven, but it feels that way.
i didnt like their video cause it literally pointing out the obivous.
ik ur getting hate but i appreciate this bc i literally had the same exact thoughts watching that deadrising video . i remember watching his old vids and was just super disappointed in whatevs commentary he was trying to give as a woman . literally just seemed like he was mad that you cant sexually harass women in the game anymore.

She destroyed Halo.
I think you should be allowed to be dissatisfied with a product, even if it was partially made by women.

Crobycat is dweeb with bad politics. All his videos are toxic in one way or another. He might have inadvertently have a good point with this one though. Its not like COD was always this masterpiece of gaming, its literally just US military propaganda, and there is no nick minaj in the campaigns, if u want the old COD experience just play the fucking campaign, my dad used to love the old COD if I sat down with him today to play the campaign he wouldnt bat a fucking eye or think theres any woke shit happening, he would enjoy same as old, showing that the game has a couple of woman working on it like thats inhenrently a bad thing its just a super low bar, lost a little respect for your channel today.
@@el_doinko yeah warzone started being the real money maker and the main game is now there just to support it
@@GarridoPE The main issue with SBMM is EOMM.
