    Just did this to my 98 4runner. Such a difference!!! So glad I watched this. There was a lot of play in my pedal. I think so much that the combination of the slack and the range of motion of the pedal was limiting how much power I was getting. Most likely I wasn’t getting full throttle power. So much better low end power too. Throttle feels like it tapers like it should.

    Who said kids don't know anything?? The throttle cable streched out! Hey kid, 20 years before you were even born I was rebuilding the engine on my 56 Nomad, putting in a Rock Crusher and a Dana 60 with 4:11's. But that's cool, you reminded me to look at my throttle cable.

    Another comment on the gas pedal. There is a rubber grommet that is between the cable and pedal that wears out. This causes a lot of slack. I made my own from Ace hardware to replace the old one which completely broke apart. Put you head under the dash and you'll see what I'm talking about.

      Well, yes and no. Obviously not changing the overall power of the engine, but you are increasing the useful range of power of the engine. Technically too since adjusting the cable allows the throttle body to open up further it actually might be increasing the horse power... Either way, it makes for a much more responsive ride. Definitely try it if you haven't already.
      Cheers brotha!

    I just did the CS144 alternator swap on my 3rd gen and apparently this alt needs a minimum of 650rpm's to produce enough juice under load, and my truck idles at 550rpm's in gear, so hopefully tightening this throttle cable will increase the idle rpm's just a bit... Quickest and easiest thing I can try, thx!

    I just did this. It was so easy. It's got me idling at 1600 rpm which idk if that's high or not. I only did it enough for the thick cable here to pull, but not enough for the thin top cable to rev the engine.

    I replaced my stock wheels with 2018 stock wheels. An inch bigger. I lost 30 miles. I hate how much gas it chuggs. Thinking about selling it to save on gas but i love it. So hard to let it go. Should i change the gears to get more power and mpg and keep or will this not help. Would do you recommend

    • @PartimeOverland
      @PartimeOverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tell me more! What do you mean about the losing 30 miles? These 4runners are certainly not the best cars for fuel efficiency, but they're pretty darn good in almost every other aspect. My personal recommendation is to keep the stock tire size if you're driving it just on the street. If you want to go offroad as well, then stick with a small rim, 16" ideally, so you can maximize your tire sidewall height.
      As far as upping fuel efficiency, there are a few maintenance items to check. There's a super great article on T4r.org you can check out that goes over them all. May help if you seem to be getting under average mileage

      I have a Bilstein/Toytec 3inch lift all around. I'll have more info on it in a future video;)

    You need a new throttle cable. Also be careful with adjusting the kickdown cable. Too tight leads to poor shifting. This has it’s place when necessary but generally another poorly guided forum noob “mod”.

    • @PartimeOverland
      @PartimeOverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting you say that. Wouldn't a new (shorter) cable have the exact same effect?

    • @FIVEVEEZEE
      @FIVEVEEZEE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@PartimeOverland Still an old and stretched cable. If you ever get a chance to drive a low mile 4Runner you'll see how there's no play in the gas pedal. Also pedal feel. Squirt some silicone spray into the boot of your cable. They usually become much smoother. Still no comparison to a fresh cable, but this is another wear item. The kickdown adjustment needs to be "just right" to feel the way Toyota designed it.

      Cool little tip. Possibly some tradeoff vs a new cable (just put it in a "to buy" list in the meantime!) as other mentioned, but in an old rig little tricks like this can really make them feel nicer. 👍

    if you do this dont fuck with the throttle lever with your hands. first time i did this the throttle lever was sticking so I went back to adjust it and kept twisting the throttle lever with my hand and it fucked up the throttle position sensor and I didn't know. So I took the whole fucking thing apart trying to figure it out and here I am $1400 later getting a new throttle body installed at a shop. Thanks for the heads up shit stick.

    That is not extra power, you just making it respond quicker, sooner, when stepping on the gas..........SORRY THAT IS NO EXTRA POWER. Power is the same.

    • @PartimeOverland
      @PartimeOverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, it is extra power. If you don't have the full range of motion of the throttle body then there is that last part of the power band that is not being used. So adding that back gives you extra power. Anyway. appreciate your words of wisdom, mister keyboard warrior:)

    • @kevintolliver3525
      @kevintolliver3525 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya i agree with Cesar. Unless you are bottoming on floor with pedal, its not more power just quicker response. It's just the input the engine responds to the input.

    • @scrajet
      @scrajet ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more available power that you couldn't use since there was slack in the cable total hp of the 4runner stays the same

    • @richardjohnson9275
      @richardjohnson9275 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree 100% with you. I have 2 3rd gen 4runners with the 3.4 and I've made the same adjustments. MORE THROTTLE RESPONSE IS WHAT YOU GET. IT DOESN'T GIVE YOU ANYMORE HORSEPOWER WHATSOEVER!!
