I sang this for many years in a little Episcopal church in Brooklyn, NY. I know it by heart and it brings back many memories. My organist was born at the end of the 19th century and our music was heavily influenced by the Victorian English much to my benefit. I learned the music of many composers but, among all, I love Stainer and Sullivan. The latter so much so that I became an afficionado of the great G&S operettas. I thank God for this music; it has enriched my life beyond measure.
This is one of my favorites and and I love the message best of all. I came to Jesus as a sinner and He has made me whole. "For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: , it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.
A beautiful piece, beautifully sung. Wonderful that it's still on TH-cam 8 years later! Hope all the angelic boy sopranos are doing well in their future lives.
A lovely performance - but what a pity there are almost no other extracts from this unjustly neglected work. I did this with my own choir some years ago and it is full of rich, passionate and unashamedly emotional music, and I recommend it to any lover of 19th century religious music. Sarah
This takes me back to the 1960 when my mom and aunt were alive we did this as a choir. I am so excited to find it on TH-cam in 2015. The word of God is so powerful
We sang this in our cathedral choir today we did a great job but this is also fabulous.Once you sing with feeling and love it will sound fabulous it is a beautiful hymn.Thank you God
Remember singing The Crucifixion as a choir boy and later as a tenor in Barney Parish Church in the early seventies. I was spellbound by the lush melodies and harmonies on Stainer. And still am today. I was not then and am not now a believer. But that doesn't matter. The music moves me to this day and this performance is up there with the best
This piece always gives me goosebumps! I've been singing it for years and years. Whether I'm singing it or listening to it, it always moves me deeply. I know I'm not alone. This group has perfect dynamics, and vocal control. "He who sings, prays twice."
Thank you for this! Our Music Minister was one of a kind. A pro! We did the entire oratorio one Easter. The entire work is beautiful but "God So Loved the World" was OUR favorite. Several of us sang it with tears in our eyes. Let it serve to remind us all both of the love our God has for all sinners and of this beautiful piece of inspired and inspiring music. God bless all fellow believers this Easter Season and throughout the rest of your days.
Getting those final consonants .. d and t .. to be clear, given the hang time in the Cathedral, requires exceptional musicianship by all concerned. Bravo!
I love the way the director paces the piece to really use the acoustics of the cathedral. It brings out just how precise a cathedral choir has to be just to produce an acceptable performance, let alone an utterly beautiful one like this.
Love this song! It makes me pray the following... Our Father Art in Heaven. Hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. As we forgive the debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. With thine Lord, the power, the glory forever. Amen! This song makes me pray that.
Beautiful Rendition.Brings 'bitter sweet' memories of my Dad . John j. Lovell who sang in Christ Church Parish Church Choir Barbados for 80 plus years (passed june 2011). The complete work was performed by them to rave reviews. .
This was one of my Mom's favorite songs, that she used to sing so beautifully when she was in the Dallas Catholic Choir! Dad made sure the beautiful choir that sang at her general include it! Funny aside, they had to practice it right before the service because Dad said all they usually sing is Latin. Enjoy
Poor sister no longer. St. Paul's Cathedral Choir's performance here is unparalleled by her peers. Please, O please, let there be a recording of them for us to have.
My choir is doing this song & it is lovely!!! They do a great job... but its sounds a lot better when you sing it from the heart, (I can tell some some of the guys did!! :) ) Sing for the soul!!! This song is so, so powerful!! How could this song not move you? It is awesome!!! :)
Really a beautiful recording & video. A tribute to a combination of excellent musical training and spiritual awareness. I don't see any recording mikes, so I wonder if they did the video to match up with a recording previously made. No diss, meant. They are a top-notch choir.
This brings bitter sweet memories of a time long ago when my wife conducted a cantata by John Stainer in a faraway land. The choir was made up of expats from many countries.
@livetosing4him Well, not always. . . It just sounds different. Boys have vebrata sometimes. It's true, though, it has a much different sound than just girls or mixed choirs. It does sound more purer, too.

Powerful..music goes to the soul of man..thank you Jesus
Beautiful. Christmas is the time to celebrate the fact that Christ Jesus in the manger grew to be the Gift to save the world.
God still loves the world in 2016.

Always reduces me to tears, this one.

Already chosen this as part of my funeral music. I have given my family strict instructions to have it played.
We sang this in our cathedral choir today we did a great job but this is also fabulous.Once you sing with feeling and love it will sound fabulous it is a beautiful hymn.Thank you God
O GOD, how YOU move us. YOUR WILL be done. thank you LORD amen

@AnoukaKC This is St Paul's Cathedral Choir in London, so yet they are native english speakers. They just have very very good diction for singing.

John 3:16. Beautiful message. Beautiful song. May God bless and protect us all!

So, so beautiful....And, so perfectly in tune with my feelings of Easter. Thank you Wally, for posting.
I sung this as a young man and it still ever fails to move me to tears.
Thanks for this and all the wonderful performances of choirs around the world.
So, so beautiful....
Such a beautiful song ⭐ 💜
Beautiful, says it all!
aaaamen beautiful
Absolutely stunning!! I could hear it again and again....
Getting those final consonants .. d and t .. to be clear, given the hang time in the Cathedral, requires exceptional musicianship by all concerned. Bravo!
so very beautiful... reaches to the heart of my spirit...
We just sung this today for Easter, i always get shudders when i sing it because it is just so great!

We sang this again today....I always love it....
Our choir sings this also. One of my favorites.
I love watching my friend the countertenor in this video. Wish there were more of these concert on TH-cam.
Love this song! It makes me pray the following... Our Father Art in Heaven. Hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. I am so touched, it's incredibly wonderful acoustics and the best choir ever
beautiful beyond words
This really takes me back to my chorister days (a long time ago) - Thanks
Very powerful easter song with nice rendition

What a truly wonderful memory for you.
Great! Wonderful!
2019....still beautiful

How truly wonderful!
The acoustics in this church are so good that prob only one hidden mic was needed, the robes and sashes are choir uniforms.
Sublime.
Heavenly!!!
This is the most perfect setting of this anthem to St. John's gospel and the choir of St Paul's is about the best recording of same.
Absolutely stunning!
Beautiful!
This is the ultimate in choral performance.
Amazing rendition... Tenors...exemplify the angelic tone!!
Magnificent!!

It is awesome and perfect with exquisite blend

AWESOME PRAISE AND MAGNIFICENT VOICES!
wonderful!!
Magnificent performance! I love their ruff Thank you Inquires
So beatiful!
We are planning to sing Christmas this year. Hope we can sing like this!
Thank you very much. Sorry if I sounded critical.
It is beautiful, no outstanding voices and a beautiful blend!
The entire cantata/oratorio is a masterpiece and is now rarely heard, at least in the States.
Well done.
Loved the visually perfect enunciation at 1:18 - the final "m" of Him and the beginning "m" of might.
Really a beautiful recording & video. A tribute to a combination of excellent musical training and spiritual awareness.

Of course, great singing here on a piece from angland music.
Lovely!
I feel deeply touched...... like the rest of the choir
素晴らしいです。今度、我が聖歌隊でも奉唱しますが、私には暗譜できないかも・・・ from Tokyo
Anybody know when this was filmed??
Beautiful!!! Why are they all dressed like Cardinals though?

@dwgalviniii
Why cry, be happy !
That is their concert dress. As near as I can tell they only wear the surplice for services.
@armstrongariz You are so very correct!
The way you're supposed to pronounce all choral music, but rounding the vowels. Notice the oval shape of their mouths...
How do I purchase this beautiful piece
Amazon has it. www.amazon.com/Loved-Crucifixion-Anthems-Voices-Choral/dp/B005W47G3I/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484576312&s
It's for FREE. www1.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/God_so_loved_the_world_(John_Stainer)
@livetosing4him Well, not always. . . It just sounds different. Boys have vebrata sometimes. It's true, though, it has a much different sound than just girls or mixed choirs. It does sound more purer, too.
Beautiful performance but when they rotated the camera over the conductor I got nauseated (have always been acrophobic).
seems like a carol, Mr Stainer was no very genious composer.
Perfect.
