Absolutely beautiful..... the ancient dignity of plainsong....the dazzling clarity of boys' voices alternating with the operatic depth of the men chanting. Perfection!
I had a friend who was over my house for a house party that got a call that her sister was in a bad car accident and might not make it through the night. Her sister was in a different State and no way of her being able to see her until next day. I played her this psalm and asked everyone to pray... the calmness that came over us was unreal. This is gorgeous! I visited this church in 07. The choir was so enthralling, I told my husband,"I can die right now."~ It was SRO every mass. The Catholic Church is alive and well in London,England~the place of many martyrs, including +St.John Southworth+ who lies in state within this church. And this choir is incredibly inspiring and hard-working. Thankx.
Wonderful. I recommend visiting evening mass at Westminster Cathedral. It is an uplifting experience especially if the Cathedral school choristers' are singing. I went two nights in a row when visiting London recently. Could listen all day.
This is beautiful. I was lucky enough to chance upon last nights evening Mass. I'm Anglo-Catholic, but the music alone made me want to convert. The Cathedral is a wonderful building, and especially at night it seemed as though there was no ceiling, and that heaven itself was among us.

Music such as this is so beautiful. I'm don't believe in a God, but I certainly enjoy the music made by those who do. This brings tears to my eyes and chills down my spine. Truly gorgeous.
liberalsistah, what a wonderful thing to say. I have watched videos of the hadj and have thought I would treasure the experience of walking around the kaaba. We all worship the same God after all. It's my hope that Christians and Muslims can find constructive dialogue and live not just in harmony, but brotherhood. I am certain God would smile on this. Peace.
It was from an Easter Good Friday afternoon Vespers in 1993, which screened on Carlton television. 1 day before my baptism and confirmation at the Cathedral. I have it on video tape somewhere. Will 1 day convert to DVD format and upload. 1 day.
This is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Westminster. As to why the alter is bare, it is possible that this is during Holy Thursday/Good Friday, where the alter is stripped. That is my guess at least. Beautiful music, I cannot stop listening to it.
This is the translation of the Psalter known as the Grail. It was done in the early 60s for singing and is the official translation used in English speaking coutries for the Breviary (Liturgia Horarum)
Wow, heard them last night on their American tour. They're hot, and this plainsong chanting is fabulous. Only wish they were singing Coverdale, but it's still tops. If you've got fly, fly first class!!!!!!!!!
@cantorisdecani I agree with you cantor. I don't understand why some of these people are on here. All they do is criticize. If they don't like it go somewhere else. Although Anglican myself, thanks for the wonderful recording. I am proud of the similarities of the Roman and the English churches.
This was a Vespers, I suspect from the centenary year 1995 The 2 priests are George Stack (now Aux Bishop in Westminster) and Mark Langham who is in Rome as the Sec to the Pontifical Council for Xtian Unity. 1m and 15 s in the back row are (from the front) David Gould (CT), Andrew Carwood (T now DoM at St Paul's Cathedral), Clifford Lister (T), Rob Evans (B) Steven Alder (B). On the other side (2 mins 40) are Trevor Ling (B) Adrian Peacock (B), Nick Kaey (T) Matthew Vine (T) Angus Davidson CT
This is the grail version of psalm 38 (actually numbered 37 in the grail). The psalm is being sung in the Catholic way, which is single voiced. The Anglican tradition sings the psalms in four voices and uses a different translation. O Lord do not rebuke me in your anger; do not punish me Lord in your rage . . . . .
Nevertheless, it is amazing and line or no line, catholic or Catholic...this Psalm honors the God who calls us all through Christ Jesus. God bless Canterbury. God bless Rome.
Actually, this is Catholic. And the tune they used in chanting the psalm we hear in this video is an old traditional one, one of the a modal tones for psalms (if my memory serves me correct as regards the term). The reason why some may find this Anglican is because of the British accent. Nevertheless this is still Roman Catholic of the Vatican II Rites.
Yes Paul.....Keep patience and try to see the outside world's irrelevance against the peace and purity of the choir's singing. the praises of God.....the Opus Dei. Let us all open again our minds. even as an innocent boy's uncluttered mind.....and hear The Lord God in the quiet beauty of what you once sang.
Westminster Cathedral is actually, to quote Wikipedia, "the mother church of the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales and the Metropolitan Church and Cathedral of the Archbishop of Westminster".
A cotta is pleated with a square collar and often shorter than a surplice, and not worn so much in CofE. Have seen some anglican priests wearing them, so it is possible that an anglican choir could wear them.
Though I'm Protestant, and don't agree that it will be the Pope to revive the church, I do believe we, both Protestant and Catholic, are the Catholic Universal Church, and in Christ are brothers.
The absolute GOSPEL TRUTH is that the church founded by our Saviour is marked by four signs. Namely: She is ONE, She is Holy, She is Catholic and She is Apostolic. Sadly, no other protestant sect, can claim to be that Church. Our Lord founded the Church on Peter, Apostle of Christ and the first Bishop of Rome and therefore the first Pope. Pope Francis ,our present pope is his successor.
@micvpreaching Hardly. The Westminster Confession existed long before this cathedral. Article 25 par 6 would be enough to show that it could not have come from this denomination. Barely half a century after the drafting of the Westminster Confession, which was accepted by the Church of Scotland but not by the Church of England, control orders had to be placed on the Church of Rome due to what were seen as its antinational stance. The orders were not fully withdrawn til 1829.
To answer a few questions... The year was 1994 (I know cos im in the video, it was my last year in the choir). It's a Catholic Cathedral, not CofE. And the guy with a white strand (his name is Aaron) doesn't have bleach in his hair - he has a birthmark on his head which causes the hair to turn white. Oh and the conductor is James O'Donnell... Now the Master Of Music down the road at Westminster Abbey (we had great rivalry with them & the choir of St Paul's back in the day!) If you like what you hear, check out the Hyperion record label. They did all our professional recordings, there's a huge back catalogue of Westminster Cathedral recordings available.
I've got to say this comment is a bit depressing really. Is it really necessary to arrogantly assert that the beliefs of many people is 'made up tosh'? To return the favour I shall simply answer that atheists are under a strong delusion, "professing themselves wise they became fools". I've worked out that atheists are self-deluded, and think themselves a lot smarter than they prove to be when they land in a serious discussion on the philosophy and theology of the Church. There, the score is even now.

You should take a look at the litanies found on most of the Gregorian chant pages. The terms are always interchangeable in my experience.
It's probably about 10 years old now. I think it was from a Good Friday service.
Go to Brompton Oratory also to hear the professional choir - I promise - you will not be disappointed!

I will not be much in the mix and things but, I see the Catholic Church is what finally organized by the Orthodox
It might be an issue of length then, since the pleats and square yoke definitely don't make it a cotta (cf. Almy and Wippell catalogs).
Incredible! Have you got Lord's Prayer performed by this choir? I remember it was amazing...
Wonderful to hear this Gregorian psalmsetting. Do the choirboys still learn Gregorian singing today?

Is there a good clip of Psalm 23 set to Marosa (Bain), esp. the Gordon Jacob arrangement?
Was this taken from the time of Cardinal Hume (R.I.P.) or Cardinal O' Connor? Preety good chant, I must add.

The tunes are known as Plainsong, and they probably date from between 500 and 1000 AD
