Juan Manuel Fangio in 1952 was extremely unlucky. Alfa decided to retire due to the new regulations and no one wanted to hire the reigning champion. He did drive in several unofficial races though but no official race.
Wrong... There's no new regulations, just that the Championship was "moved" to a different category Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula One because they have been running a car that's 13 years old, long overdue for a replacement, which they couldn't afford to make. The organizers were wary that with Alfa gone, Ferrari would have no opposition in Formula One, but BRM promised that in 1952, they will, finally, compete for a full season with their Type 15 V16 car. But BRM co-founder Raymond Mays, knowing that Fangio is now without a ride, wanted to sign him to the team, practically, at all costs. So he decided to withdraw the cars entered for the non-championship Turin GP in April 1952, just so that the BRM V16 could be fettled with in preparation for Fangio's test drive, to make sure it won't have problems (which always plagued the damned car), and convince the Argentinean to sign up to them for the year... Little did they know that their withdrawal in that race at Turin would have far-reaching consequences... At Turin, with the BRM becoming a no-show, Ferrari won. This only confirmed the worst fears of the race organizers. They can't rely on any promise from BRM, as they can't even show up in a race, let alone to fight Ferrari. The French organizers at this point had already decided to run their major races to Formula 2 regulations, as there were more competitors there. And after Turin, the rest of the organizers followed suit; the 1.5L supercharged/4.5L unsupercharged Formula is practically dead. But hey, BRM did manage sign Fangio, and Gonzalez, right? But that's not it. Maserati signed Fangio and Gonzalez for the Formula 2 team, so, Fangio and Gonzalez raced for BRM in Formula 1 races and Maserati for Formula 2 (the one which now counts for the World Driver's Championship). BRM entered Fangio and Stirling Moss at the Ulster Trophy at Dundrod in June 7, and the next day, there's a Formula 2 race at Monza, where Fangio was entered by Maserati. Fangio didn't want to disappoint either team, so, he raced at Dundrod, and also planned to race at Monza, with a plan to catch a plane to Milan, but that plan didn't work out. Ultimately, Fangio hitched a ride with Louis Rosier, who competed at Dundrod, flew with him to Paris, after which, Rosier can only help Fangio by lending him a car. Fangio drove all night from Paris to Monza, just in time for the race. Badly exhausted, Fangio crashed and suffered a neck injury which sidelined him for the rest of the season...
@5:11 Renault stepped down from F1 all at that time and the Mecachrome engines were just rebranded 1 year old Renault engines wich had some tweaking....... Benetton also used those engines and were labelled Playlife engines due to brand promotion from Benetton.
Clark had a very unlucky 1966. He started on pole at Monaco and his suspension broke after 60 laps while in the points. At Belgium, 8 cars retired on the first lap in appalling weather - Bondurant, Hill, Stewart, Spence, Bonnier, Siffert and Hulme all crashed out and Clark's engine flooded due to the amount of rain ingested. Clark didn't start in France, as he had hit a bird in practice, which unfortunately hit him in the face. Clark got 4th at Silverstone and 3rd at Zandvoort, before making a driving error in Germany by putting on the wrong tyres, spinning off and out after 11 of the 15 laps. Then he had the BRM-powered Lotus 43, with the heavy and unreliable H16 engine - 2 out of 3 races, the gearbox failed; he drove the 43 once more in South Africa and the engine gave up - every BRM-powered car at that race ended up retiring. ETA: Williams had Renault engines in 1998, they were badged as Mecachrome as they had no Renault factory support.
Little thing on Mechachrome. They were the company that designed and assembled the engines for Renault. Once Renault pulled out, they lost all that investment so went under their own name. Then Flavio Briatore bought them through his company, Super Performance Competition Engineering. Hence from 1999 they were badged as Supertech
You are rating this incorrectly. A bad F1 driver is not one that wins a WDC with few wins, instead he lifted a not very good car to a winner. A bad F1 drive is like one of Schumacher many Ferrari WDC season when ANY driver on the grid could have won that year, because the car was so dominant AND his team mate had to strategically support him. Same for some of Vettel, Hamilton and now Max's WDC ... no opposition thanks to car dominance. But typically you do not end up in a dominant car if you are not a good driver. The Williams Hill took over in 1994 was not a good car
Exactly ; I give a lot more respect to 1977 WC by Lauda , 3 wins in a very competitive era, or Piquet 1983 against tough competition . Those were championships where a driver did not have luxury of winning consecutive races.
BONUS: Michael Schumacher 2005 - he won one race, against a field of 5 other drivers, and his team mate wasn't going to challenge him, and the Jordans and Minardis had no chance!
The irony of this video is that one of the greatest race performances ever happened in one of those apparently worst title defenses. Watched Hungary 97?
Didn't Nigel Mansell say he wouldn't be Prosts team mate? (he was clearly scared to lose) So it was his own fault he didn't defend his title... 2 cars in the team, one for Mansell to defend his crown... and 1 for Prost because he was clearly the best driver at the time...
Before the video starts, I'd like to say that including Damon Hill in a list like this is bullsh*t. I mean, he was driving an Arrows in 1997. How the hell did anyone expect that he could defend his crown driving such a terrible car?🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤬🤬🤬
Mansell wasn't forced out of Williams, he chose not to resign as he wanted to continue being the number 1 driver, and that wasn't going to happen with Prost also being in the team. He really should have signed on and made his point by beating Prost, but unfortunately he didn't.
@@VantagePointrocks If that actually happened, Mansell would be treated like how Mercedes treated Bottas since 2017 and basically he would start the team orders era.
I think you made a mistake. Yes, Mechachrome weren't very good. But now, with many years and many series, Mechachrome are still not very good. Losing to themselves in spec series and failing to get to darkness at Le Mans.
Williams got fed up with Nigel playing hardball and signed Prost after months of him messing around. Good enough for him. Great driver, charachter but a pain in the arse.
Throughout history, F1 has almost entirely been won by having the best car, and never because of the driver. This might be the only motorsport where this is the case. And yes he won Monaco in 1983 and could have won Long Beach too but crashed on Tambay. Street circuits were his only chance pretty much. People label him as "street circuit specialist". It wasn't that, those were the only tracks the car was competitive. Cheers.
Juan Manuel Fangio in 1952 was extremely unlucky. Alfa decided to retire due to the new regulations and no one wanted to hire the reigning champion. He did drive in several unofficial races though but no official race.
Wrong...
There's no new regulations, just that the Championship was "moved" to a different category
Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula One because they have been running a car that's 13 years old, long overdue for a replacement, which they couldn't afford to make.
@@jcgabriel1569 I would say switching to engines with only 2 litres instead of the 4,5 litres before counts as "new regulations" but I see your point.
@5:11 Renault stepped down from F1 all at that time and the Mecachrome engines were just rebranded 1 year old Renault engines wich had some tweaking.......
Benetton also used those engines and were labelled Playlife engines due to brand promotion from Benetton.
Those trolling zooms and remarks about Mansell and Frank Williams killed me lmao
Damon couldn't even do anything that's the crazy part
It should also include Ayrton Senna 1992 season, where he was 4th after back-to-back 90 and 91 championships.
Still scored three wins. Hardly the worst tbh
No Phil Hill?? His title defence was atrocious, leaving the scuderia for the ATS (Italian not German one)

Joking aside, awesome style you're developing here.
Noice!! 👍🏼
"(Yamaha) ... their formula 1 engines weren't as good as their pianos" ... LOL!!
Top 3 racing discipline’s based only on how the cars look:
Trans am in the 70’s
Formula 1 in the 60’s
V8 Supercars in the 00’s
BONUS: Michael Schumacher 2005 - he won one race, against a field of 5 other drivers, and his team mate wasn't going to challenge him, and the Jordans and Minardis had no chance!
Schumi didn't won because of the 2005 TYRE RULE who says that you should change ONLY the tyre who is completely destroyed.
@@IGG2002 you'll find most of the worst F1 title defence's are due to circumstance rather than the driver suddenly becoming crap at their job.

That moustache just was too much for my fragile 10 year old objectivity.
The irony of this video is that one of the greatest race performances ever happened in one of those apparently worst title defenses. Watched Hungary 97?
Great list, but I would also add Keke Rosberg in 1983 and Sebastian Vettel in 2014 as well as Lewis Hamilton in 2009. And Scheckter should be No. 1
Mansell missed the last two races of 1987 because of his big crash at Suzuka
12:30 : But that wasn't his fault. The team he chose was incompetent at best.
Super interesting video, thanks
Mansell wasn't forced out of Williams, he chose not to resign as he wanted to continue being the number 1 driver, and that wasn't going to happen with Prost also being in the team. He really should have signed on and made his point by beating Prost, but unfortunately he didn't.
@@VantagePointrocks If that actually happened, Mansell would be treated like how Mercedes treated Bottas since 2017 and basically he would start the team orders era.
Mansell better than piquet
Yeah.. time to stop with the weed lol
So agree
You somehow failed to mention that Lauda, finished 2nd every time Prost won and took the title in 84 by half a point!
Michael Schumacher in 2005 should get a mention also.
That was because of the 2005 tyre rule.
Vettel 2014 also should be in this list. Scoring 0 wins and beaten by Ricciardo who wins 3 races.
I think you made a mistake. Yes, Mechachrome weren't very good. But now, with many years and many series, Mechachrome are still not very good. Losing to themselves in spec series and failing to get to darkness at Le Mans.
I see Nelson Piquet hasn’t changed much since 1988.
Williams got fed up with Nigel playing hardball and signed Prost after months of him messing around. Good enough for him. Great driver, charachter but a pain in the arse.
5:23, they were just Renautl 1997 RS9 rebadged

Nigel was a painful complainer and it was celebrated when he was sacked from Williams. Good riddance…
You're a great channel
I agree....justice for Nigel. 😊 first f1 driver I followed. When he came to indycar and I got watch him race here in indy, I was sooooo happy.
Throughout history, F1 has almost entirely been won by having the best car, and never because of the driver. This might be the only motorsport where this is the case. The 2nd biggest motorsport however, MotoGP, saw the title won by what was considered the weakest bike on the grid as recently as 2019.
The Honda was much better than the KTM and Aprillia in 2019. But yes the motogp rider has a much greater importance in performance than drivers in F1 today
Everytime i see some photos and footage with the drivers from 70,80,90s I'm amazed because these guys look like men, real men drivers. Nowadays on the grid most of them look like teenagers.
no shummi 2005? thats no1 for me and vettel 2014 cause both were consecutive champions up until these points. also mansell officially lost the wc in japan qualifying crash one race before the last round in aus but his chances were slim even if he didnt crash

Rosberg did it best
let's face it. F1 is ALWAYS about the CAR, and not the driver.
Well when Ferrari won their first Constructors title with Schumacher they weren't the best car on the grid. You must've been born in the 2000's with logic like that, same goes for Kimis world title. So no you're pretty much wrong. There are more instances too but that would probably break your brain.
@@bzilla-d4i majority is about the car.
i believe your statements because there's no denying that. but really, f1 is about building the best race car and racing them against other ones in a game of 4d chess.
it's not like Indy, and the drivers making the difference rarely happens.
@@schmitz909 oh it happens buddy, you might be new to F1 to know it matters, that's why laptimes exist, sure the car matters, but when you're finishing the race 12 seconds ahead of your teammate in the same equipment it matters. That's where your talent is measured. When Williams BMW and Ferrari went head to head at the peak of Williams power they basically had the faster car, the BMW V10 like the turbo 4 of the 80's was the most powerful engine on the grid, along with McLaren Mercedes, where McLaren lost the battle was reliability where BMW and Ferrari were impeccable.
