I do like the idea of "ai" races, it's like micromouse comps taken to the next next next next level. That said, I think they should do it with smaller vehicles, like 5th scale. Safer in a crash. Cheaper. Easier to construct. Once the tech gets good, move up to the full sized cars. ("ai" is in quotes because we know it's just marketing for what it truly is - machine learning. Not a true artificial intelligence.)

The AI powered car is just like a Vegas slot machine It's either jackpot (after a couple of thousand practiser laps) or completely useless. But you never know what you're gonna get.

That closed race course is sure full of edge cases.

We have too much oil, metal, time and not enough climate change on this planet. Let's take more from the poor and increase millionaires' power to have more events like this.

Just remember we have AI thats just as much a black box as these cars driving on public roads. Yes they had more time to improve it but public roads are also a lot more complex in terms of information that the car has to work with…

they should use cheaper cars and let them destroy one another... People totally would pay to watch that... not a boring slow F1 AI race

"The teams only had 2 months..." oh that explains it :D I was going to say, this is terrible. We had better self driving road cars 10 years ago. And automated racing is easier than automated driving, you know the track, you know the best lines going in, the rules are fixed and easily coded and there's no pedestrians! For the record, I don't think these cars are using 'AI', I think they are programmed with traditional algorithms that just react to a set of conditions with a specific result. For this to be 'AI' in any way, they would need to have trained a neural network or similar with thousands of hours of simulation time, which they can't have done in 2 months. It seems like they spent 2 months building vehicles that can be controlled by computer, then just threw in some basic reaction algorithms. Now they have a vehicle that can be computer controlled, they just need to record a bunch of laps with a human driver, and take detailed measurements of the vehicles control surfaces and how it reacts, then build an accurate sim for an AI to train in. Give it a few months to learn at 1000x real time, and it might get somewhere!

It would have been nice to see their speed and gear changes.

I'd love you to see a Model X Plaid, stock, against these things.

Why not copy the coding of the F1 games AI and let that race?
