Is it NOW or NEVER to buy a 2021 Lexus RC F with a V8?

  • The RC F is the sports coupe answer Lexus has for Audi, BMW, & Mercedes AMG. Under the hood is a 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 that is now producing 472HP & mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission. The exterior brings aggressive styling 19in wheels, carbon fiber roof, rear diffuser and active spoiler. On the inside Lexus brings an interior materials and seating with the RC F. Is it NOW or NEVER to buy a 2021 Lexus RC F with V8 power?

If you put the car on track mode and sport + and turn the traction control off it will say expert mode which allows burnouts and is way more fun .

LC 500 has the same exact engine mated to a 10 speed Auto but the 0-60 is better on the RCF even though it’s only a 10th faster so the LC 10 speed is basically worthless and the car is more about looks . Love my 2020 RCF. This is a very comfortable car to drive honestly. I wanted an 8 cylinder car before they are dead. I never had any intent on buying or owning a BMW... I want something I can keep for 10 years without costing me a fortune to upkeep... Hence Lexus. This is a fun car. Everyone always compares it to others which honestly I never did. I bought it because it looks nice, sounds nice (even better with an exhaust), and just overal quality and experience. There are NOT a lot of these on the road. 293 RCF's were sold in the USA in 2020... probably even less now in 2021... M3/4..etc. dime a dozen. You see them everywhere. This, you won't :-)
I totally agree they CAN be expensive AF.. too much in all reality. Mine had an MSRP of $81k with every option minus the carbon fiber package (which I didn't want because I wanted a moonroof) and the TVD (which isn't needed for the street), and ended up getting it out the door for $68k because I bought it at the end of 2020.

IS 500 owner here, did a test drive on a 2018 RC F, and the difference b/w the chassis is huge that is even with 85mph speed, I cannot imagine how planted this RC F will be with over 100mph, IS 500 can handle the V8 but the body is too soft for that engine. I'm really torn on RC F buying, I would lose a lot - 1800W ML amp, no Driver memory setting from 2022 RC F, no Engine bracing on RC F from 2023 onwards and no TVD from 2023 as well. TVD is a highly complex part so an LSD would suffice. But it's the F signature evolution since GS F got it later than RC F and not a single failure on that TVD since 2015 RC F debut. Will see if I get a 2022 RC F near mint or a 2024/2025 RC F. Also note, 2025 will be the last model year for RC F, it will be discontinued as RC F GT3 successor LFR is coming. LC 500 and IS 500 may as well see their demise as Lexus kills 2UR-GSE and kills the brand as well. Remember Lexus was born in LS with a V8 engine and once the V8 is gone, there's no Lexus anymore.

Fantastic review as always! I love the RC F and will definitely buy one as my next car in the next year or two. A few points I want to bring up:
First, I gotta love that my last comment was on the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 and that for the money I’d rather get an RC F. And then this gets uploaded!
Second, about how this isn’t the “same as an M4, AMG C63, RS5, et al.” BMW, MB, and Audi all made cars for GT3. The RC F is a GT3 car made for Lexus. The others may have better spec sheets, but they lack the comfort, reliability, and “soul” that comes with this. A NA V8 will put a much bigger smile on your face vs a turbocharged engine. You should lease the German (and Infiniti) offerings, because after year 3 they fall apart. With this you can drive it for a decade without any maintenance behind what’s scheduled. And keep the original water pump.
And lastly, the end of V8s. Toyota is notoriously slow when it comes to change. It’s the reason this and the IS haven’t seen much of an interior change since 2015, and why Lexus is only now admitting defeat with the touchpad. (back touchscreens in 2022! Thank heavens!) In the same vein, they aren’t going to abandon the V8 for a few years, especially with the announcement of the IS 500. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this and the Mustang were the last NA V8 holdouts in 2025.
If I were a betting man, I’d wager the RC and IS lines get an interior refresh in the next year or two, alongside a slightly more powerful NA V8 engine. 3 years after that, Lexus will likely be forced to send their V8 to pasture.

Lexus chose the F moniker because the guy who first put a V8 in a small Lexus yelled, "F yeah man!" when he punched it. Thanks for the info on Alcantara. I always thought it was called that because of a guy from Long Beach named Al Cantara.

Love how with time this cars grown on people, it was never meant to be the replacement for the RCF it was meant to be a gentlemen’s GT with striking looks, luxury, reliability and an u forgettable sound, the japanese aren’t competing with the Germans in the performance department on purpose, they give their cars priority on how they actually drive and treat owners not what numbers they place on a spec sheet

I think the best RC F to buy is an early one, like a 2015-2016, which have gotten quite cheap. If you're looking at a new one, you're still considering performance - otherwise you'd buy an LC500 instead. In that case, a 5 year old RC F isn't likely to give you big problems anyhow considering it's a Lexus with a 2UR. With the rest of that money, you can throw it into modifications and seat time. Japan has proved that the RC F is surprisingly quick around the track with some handling mods and minor weight reduction.

Personally I think touch screens in cars are flat out dangerous. I don't mind the old puck style infotainment controller in my IS, I can do almost everything without taking my eyes off the road. Can't say fairer than that! I saw one off these today for the first time in Cambridge UK, absolutely stunning, thinking of upgrading while I still have the chance...

Great review Joe! I was totally shocked to see this RCF make it on your channel but man was it worth it. I have a 2015 RCF and the way you describe the feeling you get behind the wheel is exactly how I feel every time I drive mine. I’ve had it almost 6 years and it still makes me feel that way. I had a Procharged 2010 Camaro ss before and although that car was scary fun, the RCF refinement and package is another level. I love the updates they made to the 2021 RCF and only Zonk is i wish you would have tested the launch control on this bad boy. We didn’t get that option on the 2015-2019 models and would love to see how it works.

It’s a beautiful car but it’s not a Sports Sedan. It weighs way too much to be considered a real contender in the class it’s in with its $ and performance ratings. What it is however, is one hell of a GT car. The GSF , RCF and ISF all have that world class, super creamy V8 and with the appointed luxury they swathe the driver in… The weight detracts from these being real contenders in the class and at the same time, the weight is what makes them such great GT cars. The rain in this video demonstrates just how heavy these cars are as they stick to the ground with all that weight. Lexus gets an A+ for making this car in todays politically sensitive environment. I love manuals too but Lexus made the right call putting autos in these cars. After all, they are Continent Crushing Gt’s

After getting used to the Lexus track pad I find it preferable to a touch screen. For me it seems more stable to use when driving going over bumps than trying to use the touchscreen is. Also the location of the screen on this car allows you to keep your vision more centered toward the windshield than the placement of a traditional infotainment screen lower on the dash. Maybe I'm just biased however.

I Bought a certified LC500 last week. OMG, this car is amazing and it has the same engine as the RCF. I would suggest you look at a certified LC if you are thinking about the RCf. They are not that much more expensive compared to the RCF and the car is rare and amazing. A certified , low mileage LC is actually less expensive than a new RCF. I paid 64k for a 2018 LC, with 30k miles. It has 1 year of manufacture warranty left and then additional two years of certification. In my opinion, you cannot beat this car. The original msrp on my cars was 105k. The car I bought has every available option on it. By the way , I get over 30 mpg on the interstate and the sound, oh, boy, wow!

I sure hope that Lexus will upgrade the infotainment system (touchscreen, but not just tacked onto the dash), replace the mechanical parking brake with an electronic parking brake, update the interior w/more luxury & sound treatment material/glass and include the LSS+ 2.5, all before discontinuing the NA V8. I'll scoop one up in 2022 or whenever they decide to do it. But for now I can't justify the cost for basically 2014 technology/trim. Love this car and got my money stashed and waiting. Don't need or want a sunroof, carbon package, Mark Levinson and Navigation. Got the sound covered with a custom integrated after-market sound system/back seat delete. Factory navigation...erm well, no thanx. Both ML & Nav options necessitate MOST Over Copper bus that makes installing custom sound difficult at best.
Thanx Joe and Laurie for this review. Great job. Hopefully in the next year or two y'all will be reviewing the upgraded car I just described.
