Shawn Lane is beyond incredible. He is unbelievable. There are many great and amazing guitarists, but Lane may truly be the one and only greatest of the greatest of all time.
I don't generally think there is actually one better then another in any guitar comparison, but shawn lane is just in human, he is the most hyper complex instrumentalist to ever have lived.
Romeo is fantastic and I love Symphony X. He's like an olympian god. But Shawn Lane is like an alien who can perceive the fourth dimension or something haha. That's how I'd compare the two
Yeah I'd agree. Romeo is among the best metal shredders there is along with Petrucci. Shawn Lane is on another level, when you're that good you're not confined to a genre or even one instrument, he kinda transcended music.
Almost all great guitarists have huge respect for Shawn Lane and they drew inspiration from his playing style. Some tried to immitate him. But his level of greatness is uncomparable. Shawn and Jason are 2 rare gems and am glad to have found them.
Love both. MJR is basically john Williams + insane level (above the gods, guthrie, buckethead, vai, satch). It's different music. Shawn lane is almost just holdsworth. I say that as a massive fan of both. Hundreds of hours listening.
@@sixmillionsilencedaccounts3517 he's got John Williams harmony and melody so idk. Think of how catchy every MJR,symphony x song hook is. Shawn lane never wrote anything that catchy.
This comment holds absolutely zero basis in reality. You've literally never listened to, nor analyzed a single piece of Romeos work to utter such disgraceful nonsense.
I was a professional guitar teacher for many years. I know what I am talking about. When someone tries to hide mistakes behind gain: uncontrolled noise. What do you need to get "controlled noise"? Listen to EvH if you want to know what that's supposed to mean. You need a shitload of hand-coordination, you need "the tunnel" at your right hand: i.e. just that string rings, what you intend to ring. You damp away the rest of the bunch. Left hand. There are a lot of damping techniques in the left hand too. For instance: The "Hendrix Thumb". To coordinate this needs years of practice. (Please do not discuss things with me that you do not know. I am sick an tired of this).
R.I.P. Shawn Lane. Shawn and Michael are my heroes. Just an fyi to some of you... Michael Romeo is influenced heavily by Shawn and it shows in his playing
Both have similar picking styles. Romeo is my favorite, but even Romeo has said that Lane was his main influence when it came to technique. Lane is the master, Romeo is the student, but I still prefer Romeo's style.
One is improvising thats the reason cuz he has his eyes closed meanwhile Michael is tecnic, routes, mental maps, scales, everything with meausure metric and perfectly accurate
Is this a serious video? Shawn Lane was and still is lightyears of every guitarist to ever live. The intonation and phrasing of Lane, on a mathematical level, is beyond comprehension. He delicately added variant pitch shifts to each note in this excerpt, whereas Romeo is just hitting notes fast.
Shawn lane is way up there but he's not zeus looking down. Both are technically in the top .01%. Holdsworth, marchbank, there's even some pretty wild kids nowadays. Theres teenagers covering SL and MR anyways. SL says Billy gibbons is the goat. Every icon now calls gales the goat. There's no 1 guy. It could only benefit you. Eklund is a freak at lanes level. Thal is the same.
Well evidently you never heard Shawn play the right hand parts of legendary classical pianists. He could play any style of music on just about any instrument
Both are (was) incredible guitar players. MR is a little more flashy, probably the most complete neoclassical style player, and his legato chops are second to none. But Shawn was playing more complex lines with odd note groupings with unparalleled speed and precision. Apples and oranges really, but Shawn inspires me more.
Michael romeo is very underated, but interms of technique i think no one is close to shawn lane until this day. Allan Holdsworth and Frank gambale has his own league.
Is this really a comparison LOL shawn lane is on a completely different level . Michael is good sure, but there will NEVER be another shawn lane. Arguably the fastest player to ever live, and the most musical. The world was lucky to have him.
The winner is….. all of us for having the opportunity to hear them both.
Romeo is outrageously good amoungst the greats. Shawn is from another dimension entirely.
Shawn is a genius, his musicality and technique is from another universe. RIP Shawn.
I choose both.
Shawn lane, melody and feel. MR... rock widdle
Is there really a comparison? These guys are in way different leagues
not many ppl can play like shawn lane
No one can.
Michael, hands down. Absolutely, positively, 1000% born to do what he does, and he still to this day blows my mind every time I listen to him play.
Shawn❤🔥
Shawn have nailed the tone , even super fast runs sounds so fluid and musical
Shawn Lane! R.i.p idol.
Shawn Lane of Course!!!!!
Here's the fact...
And all the virtuosos know it...
Shawn Lane was unmatched.
Shawn Lane. He is one of the great innovators of electric guitar.
Shawn Lane had his own unique vocabulary and techniques. Romeo is just the same stuff people before him were doing.
Its exactly the opposite.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever read.
Shawn lane is on another planet. Romeo is of this planet
Just remember at the guitar summit, no one wanted to play because Shawn was on stage.
Shawn!
They're both legends, so both.
Shawn 🎉
Shawn Lane for sure
False
@@MangoKaiTrue. 1000000% Lane over anyone else

Mr. Lane.
Shawn Lane is THE MASTER ONE!
Romeo stratosferico😮
Just so you know, my answer is always going to be Shawn Lane. Michael Romeo is a killer player though
Shawn without a doubt
Shawn Lane
Es un privilegio para nuestros oídos escuchar como Shawn lane coloca cada nota, pero respeto también a Romeo para su épocas muy adelantados❤
I've seen MJR live the guy absolutely flies he's awesome i also like shawn for his innovative style.
MICHAEL ROMEO..ALL THE WAY..

Shawn lane. Very good. More difficult style and less distortion. Clearer.
Huge fan of both. MJR is equally as impossible. Especially his new stuff. Granted he got an extra 20+ yrs
Their album tones are way different though. Mjr wotw tone is better than any lane tone. Granted, different masters in different eras

Lane PERIOD
What are we comparing? Spiritual impact of compositions and playing: Lane. Speed: Lane. Tone: Lane. Haircut: Lane.
While Romeo is amazing with his technical playing, Shawn puts a lot of feeling into his. Both are masters at what they do!
Romeo but Shawn is fantastic. I'm a huge Symphony x fan.
