About Father Fish, he's just another guy trying to get people excited about natural aquariums, which is good in my opinion. What I don't like about him is that he is trying to tell people to do EXACTLY as he says how to do it. People live in different parts of the world, got different setups, different fish, different leaves, different everything. There's not just 1 way to do a natural tank. Mine been thriving since 2012 and I've always used a mix of different methods. Never used a heater or any tech 'cept for a sponge filter and lights. Building a food web is one of the nicest things you can do for your tank, I think.
I do use leaves from trees. It provides shelter that some of my fish seem to like. The Pangio cuneovirgata and the Pygmy cory and Gastromyzon ctenocephalus. And provides an additional food source for the ecosystem.
HI im ok. thank you I can't tell you the differences. I don't even know what kind of aquarium I have. My aquarium was inspired by the walstad method, but now it's something else. All have something in common, but I can't tell you the differences. Each ecosystem is unique in its own way !!!
In Walstad method, aquarist do not use any filter (canister, hob, sponge). Also in Walstad method, there is no supplement or additives for the dirt. It's like FF method is version 2.0 of Walstad method.
th-cam.com/video/VjdLE1u4rZw/w-d-xo.html FYI, long video explaining in a scientific way about the benefits of tannins released from leaves and this is not from some controversial character 😀
yes, I said there are benefits, but I only showed the risks of using the leaves. and I said that the decision belongs to everyone whether or not to use leaves taken from nature
Nice another great video but i gather leaves all the time put them in a jar or smaller tank and let it sit for a few months cause i enjoy all the little critters scuds daphnia copapods and ect. Introducing them to my tanks have made my kribensis electric blue acrua and white cloud minnows spawn heavily. And plus the things i feed shrimp and a few other things, see what your not understanding is you dont just throw them in your tank cause of the problems it can cause you put them in a container and observe them for 30 or 60 or even 90 days. Then try your best to take out the little critters they may hurt your fish or cause problems. I have a father fish deep substrate tank thats over 90 percent planted and between the mulm and the leaves it perfect for my fish to spawn in and that and the java moss i have in there helps my fry survive well, cause it would be impossible for me to take anything out cause my tanks are heavily planted. But i do agree with you alittle taking just any leave from any body of water can most definitely harm your fish. Take a look at 2 channels on youtube Patty's aquatics and Lucas and father fish then you might get another perspective of leaves in the aquarium. There's a process of doing it
thank you. the problem is not mine. many people write to me that their fish died after putting leaves in their aquarium. I am trying to make people more aware of the use of leaves in aquariums
Yes! Yes! And, again, yes! Putting the leaves in a resurrection jar (so to speak)/quarantine is often overlooked. I must confess that I did put leaves right into the aquarium a few times but got the most out of it after testing what leaves my shrimps like best. And how do I determine that? By doing exactly what you say! Thank you for your comment 😊😊.
I see alot of people doing the omg I don't agree with what you are saying, He's bad! As I highly disagree with your conclusion on leaf litter. You showed the audience what you researched that led you to this conclusion. My personal rebuttal is moderation is key like so many other things. I find a lot of success with leaf litter.

I would have assumed that a Walstad related channel would have mentioned the fact that the antibacterial properties of leaves inhibit the bacteria that process waste and release the nutrients that the plants in the aquarium uptake to filter the water.
People complain that their fish in their aquariums die after using leaves taken from nature. There are plenty of videos about the benefits of leaves, but no one talks about the problems that can occur if they are not used properly
@walstadmethodstepbystep yeah, but what I'm saying is, mate. Part of the Walstad method says don't use leaves in Walstad tanks. It stops the walstad method working
Guess anybody who helps u save money instead of telling u to buy more idiotic unnecessary and overpriced products/chemicals is controversial to you people
No filter question Generally both low water height and high water height fish tanks works, but I have no idea if my neon tetras or cherry shrimps are suffering or not due to the lack of oxygen in 60x45x45cm fish tank Because I do not have the ability to communicate with fishes, I only judge whether there is any oxygen or not via deaths, which I have seen none, perhaps my buce and mosses are providing oxygen, or perhaps the fishes are suffering but they can't speak human language to me I was told to use low water height because at water surface is where oxygen exchange takes place and have the highest oxygen available, besides, it makes it more likely that neon tetras reaches the top of water surface, creating waves, and therefore oxygen No filter is because of noise in bedroom, I have lots of money, I can buy any filter but those silent aren't silent enough for me to sleep, and I can't place my fish tanks at the balcony because of my parents unhappiness which I do not understand
if the aquarium is well planted you don't have to worry about lack of oxygen. it's not lack of oxygen that is the most dangerous, you should at least test the water with a quick test. i don't know what silent filter i can recommend.
As far as silent filtration, nothing beats the steady and totally inaudible work of bacteria chomping on and breaking down nitrites. A deep substrate will do the trick. I have two still water tanks. One is a shallow tank and it works better then the other which has a deeper (or higher?) water column. Both are well planted. 😊
Before telling me why I shouldn’t just go out and grab a bunch of random leaves and stick them in my aquarium, tell me why I would. I’ve literally never heard of anyone doing this.
I personally use a handful of leaves in a 100 liters tank to kick start the nitrogen cycle so the plants already have nutrients available and ready. And once the leaves decompose they form a mulch in which all sorts of small invertebrates thrive. Only then do I add the livestock. But I only keep neocaridina shrimps, so be warned. 😊
Really nice video thank you for all these informations. I have a question, i live in tunisia and in tunisia there is no aquasoil available and i want to make a self sustaining ecosistem, can you tell me which plants can live in these conditions (i mean in soil without nutriments) and what suggestions do you have for me?
awesome video.. i have to say out of the 20 or so tanks I have, the two "Father Fish" setup a year ago are the least successful. I was very surprised to hear you are still adjusting the light on that 1.5+ year old tank. It looks similar to most of the Hygger lights I have. The controllers on mine are not reliable, each one acts differently. Some hold their program, some not so much. Both in light intensity, and duration, they do not work as intended. I agree, it is the hardest thing for me to understand/control. tanks for the video✌💚🙌
Father fish has NEVER said use fresh leaves....Get your facts straight. What do you think fish do in a pond where leaves randomly fall in the pond. Your misinformation is unbelievable.
A little too much allarmistic video. Some poits are indeed correct, some others are questionable. Surely leaves can be useful or harmful for different kind of acquariums. I use a lot of leaves (boiled/not boiled dependig fro the need) but not in all my tanks just because not all fish enjoy the same chemistry and i collect them in nature, same i do for rocks and wood. depending on the location, most of dried wood/leaves can be used without harm. still i often lightly boil them before, mostly for making them float less, but surely reduce the risk of contamination (but i often use water from streams and ponds.. so i think it doesen t change to much) It can be debatable, 'cause we take fish from all over the world, but i usually don't feel that dangerous to mix my fish with materials and organisms of my surroundings, even if some pathogens are present. In general, if the ecosystem is ok the number of pathogens remains low in nature, but the same can't be said for fish farms with a grat load of fish in small water.
@@kontemplatemusic2189 in fairness to him he did get it cleared up pretty good after adding more plants and snails which sorted out the algae and the water but when he showed it first time on video it was pretty funny. I've seen cleaner water in my toilet bowl, the morning after a heavy curry.
