The idea of a kid constantly being filmed for the internet always just felt weird to me. I do dumb crap when I'm with my family, I can't imagine constantly having to worry about public perception when I'm just trying to goof off with my siblings
And even more so when it's actual personal stuff. Like, if I wanna talk to my mom about, say, my love life, or our relationships with my dad, hell, I DO NOT wish for it to be public
@@gabrielmalta1962 didn't the 8 passengers mom do something like that? Like, she recorded herself giving them "the talk", as if that isn't already awkward
@@peekaloo12 she also filmed the girls pretty up close about them doing their “first shave” (legs and armpits and stuff) and buying their first bras and Jesus Christ that has to be humiliating to have that public. Going through puberty alone can be awkward for most preteens but having it filmed then uploaded for the whole world to see is a nightmare (not to mention you’re exposing your children to the risk of dangerous people watching those videos with not so innocent intentions)

The invasion of homelife by commodity and capital gains is truly one of he most horrifying things I can imagine. Your home is your work, and your work is your home. I personally get the weird pageant mom vibes from family channels so I avoid them, and I absolutely agree that they shouldn't exist. Raising a child (or multiple in many of these cases) only to surround that small kid at their most vulnerable state with cameras, management, etc. and taking away their privacy is just horrible. We were all dumb kids once, and had the opportunity to be dumb and learn in peace. The kids can't help it, but the parents should know better.
Imagine how it would be like for those kids to go to high school, college or work. Perhaps they'd just be known to the classmates/coworkers as "that kid who played with toys on TH-cam". Horrible.
Yeah growing up with all eyes on you is pretty gross. I've been/are going through a similar experience and it's not pleasant at all. Humans need privacy and the ability to operate of their own free will. This hyper controlling wanna be God state takes that all away. It's gross. I see them trying to groom us into wanting to be constantly under surveillance with social media but there are still some people on this planet quite happy to live private lives that aren't on display for everyone. It's gross and stifling
I love how these videos feels like he is just forcing himself to watch these videos for no reason and then he makes a youtube video as a coping mechanism.
Not-so-hot take but if you're not really allowed to have a TH-cam account if you're under 13 then TH-cam shouldn't allow extensive publication of footage of children under the age of 13. It would be a bit complicated to implement and monitor (I'm mostly thinking about consent laws really) but it would obviously be extremely beneficial for these kids in the long run not to have their growing lives put on the internet for millions to see.
I've been thinking about this and, considering TH-cam puts channels through a "content test" before monetizing them, I think it would be doable to at least stop this kind of content from getting monetization. Considering most of this channels are basically turning their kinds into commodities, stoping them from getting money out of them should also stop them from becoming such a big deal. Would be nice if TH-cam had a way to implement some kind of permit that stops people from freely uploading underage kids footage. But I think that would be complicated considering there are medical institutions, schools, art productions, etc. that use footage of minors without any negative consecuences for the kids. That being said, *something* should be done by the platform to stop the exploitation of kids.
That's a great idea. It wouldn't stop all the content, but at least it would stop hyenas making money out of their kids in vlogs channels / toy channels
@@MAXIMILLIONtheGREAT Dude, we're not saying it would be beneficial money wise for YT, we're just saying it'd be good for a shred of decency to exist in that filthy corporate business
From the perspective of a teacher Vlog families are frankly horrifying to me, children in their most early developmental phase learn critical skills such a emotional development, trust, and social development. When you have a child "acting" from their earliest moment that no longer becomes acting for them that is simply how they understand interacting with people. When your developmental memories include your parent "directing" you for TH-cam views that will have a critical effect on how you interact with people. A good example of what happens to children in this kind of life is the Olsen Twins; they acted from birth till they were eighteen years old, the entire time everyone around them was encouraging them to continue acting despite the fact that they did not enjoy it. Because whether they admit it or not they have an incentive to keep them acting as they pay their salary, it's the same way with Vlog families, using your child as a part of your income inherently alters their relationship even if they think otherwise. The Olsen twins today have become utter recluses who rarely interact with the public while their sister, who wasn't pushed into the lime light, went on to become an actor in her own right. I will be legitimately surprised if the ACE families of the world don't develop similarly, and what infuriates me more is that their parents were allowed to have a normal childhood and a normal parental relationship, their children never got a choice and will never know what that is on a personal level.

I'm in agreement. It is unhealthy and I shudder to see what will happen to this new iteration of Child Stars who have had their entire lives broadcasted to millions of strangers.
I want to know how this will affect their ability to get normal jobs considering jobs will fire a teacher just for having a picture online of them drinking alcohol despite them being an adult. We're gonna need new job hiring rules since the kids couldn't consent at the time, and jobs shouldn't reject them for not fitting the company image when they had no control of what was put online.
It's funny, the most "family friendly" content is always the content that never calls itself such. Anything that does is almost always the furthest from family friendly it could be

I can't even imagine what life must be like for these kids when the camera is turned off. maybe this is just me, but I find it hard to believe that their emotional needs are being met with parents like this.
The amount of grooming, coaching, gaslighting, and manufacturing situations and emotional reactions out of children parents expect continued, unbiased love and trust from- despite deliberately and constantly fucking with their kids and recording it, as if any amount of capital could undo the trauma that will give these kids. Even “good” family blogs are abusing their children. Kids under ~4 can’t conceptualize lying- as in they can’t lie and can’t understand the concept of being able to conceal or warp information. They’re being manipulated so their parents can enjoy money that KIDS CANNOT CONCEPTUALIZE. THEY DONT KNOW WHAT CAPITALISM OR MONEY ARE. That kids like “attention” or “gifts” is some classic abuser excuse shit. The kids don’t have a choice. The horror of being a kid in one of these homes that tries to say no to their narcissistic greedy parents is unspeakable to me. This is monetized serial abuse and it’s fucking sickening to me. They enable their kids’ self destruction for content as well.
emotional inc3st is becoming more and more common these days, and these family vlog channels add an extra layer of not only having to put your parents needs before your own but also the needs of potentially millions of viewers who their parents make them feel they owe content to.
@@Lucifersfursona it's not a made-up one either, emotional inсеst and parentification are real terms for describing emotionally abusive family dynamics. AstroAnimations hit the nail on the head with that. I was _extensively_ made a sort of 'surrogate partner' by a parent when it comes to mental opening-up about persobal trauma, their emotional state, the health of everyone in the family etc. issues that a young child really isn't equipped to handle. And we were a very closed-off working class family of four. Can't imagine how badly kids from these vlog families are going to be messed up later.
another problem i can think of involves a bit of a story - i was like, 12 or so when youtube started, and if you asked me even back then at that age if i'd like to turn my life into some sort of "documentary", i'd be on board for it all! i was so obsessed with stuff like that as a kid, and with the idea of being famous, that i would have been thrilled by the idea of having every dramatic part of my life edited and turned into some sort of "movie". hell, i even used to have every intention of doing it myself with my old flip camera (lol). And that's an "older" kid, i absolutely would have said yes any year before that as well. these days, thank god nothing like that ever happened. i'm happy i have the privacy i do, i can make my own choices now in my 20s about how much of my face and life i want out there. i'm a MUCH more private person as an adult vs when i was a child. i bring up this tangent because even if the kids are completely on board to be filmed *now,* that might be a decision they end up regretting a decade or two down the line. they might be thrilled to have this personal, dramatic moment be filmed, only to hate having it out there later on. AND it's hard to get privacy back once you get as famous as some of these family channels are. some of these kids have been famous since day one, and had more of their lives broadcasted than some celebs broadcast their own kids.
+ the Olsen twins (whose childhoods were commercialised) said when they were older that they would never want a child to be put through what they went through
Let's be real, every child has at some point make something stupid in front of a camera and thought it was the coolest thing ever and every single one of them would cringe so hard they get an ulcer if they ever see it 10 years later. Also... I think celebs would never broadcast their kids to that extent because they know how it is and the amount of creeps there are out there

This is where the idea of parents consenting for children starts to break down. I don't have a perfect solution, but I can say the current state of affairs isn't good.
If I may (this isn't to compare the two videos, both your video and Smokey Glow's make really good points), in Smokey Glow's video about Mommy Vloggers (similar to Family Vloggers) she mentioned how one pro was having a community of moms talk about their experiences with pregnancies and raising a child and how it makes the Mom Experience seem less isolating. I think, in the early stages of the channel, family channels can provide something like that as well. But it gets so toxic and exploitative so fast that it doesn't even seem to make the original purpose seem worth it anymore. Especially, if it's at the cost of the kids.
I wonder if child labor laws could apply in situations like these? Like, the kids in question are obviously being exploited for profit, even if it's not a traditional "Employer & Employee" dynamic...

As much as I would love to believe that the children in most of these vlogs are being respected and do not have to film when they want to, the lines blur when the job is in your home and you have to perform daily. Not to mention, refusal to do a video could impact the family's revenue (in the eyes of an exploited child). So stressful. I wish TH-cam would enforce stricter policies, and/or that there would be legal ramifications for exploiting children like this (similar to what child actors eventually got).
Most of these kids are too young to give informed consent. The parents physically can’t know whether or not the kids want to be on camera, yet it happens anyway
Here's why I've always been incredibly wary of these kinds of channels: The thing that a lot of people raised under culturally "normal" circumstances don't immediately appreciate is how much that "normality" collectively grounds you to the contemporary world you end up spending your life adult life in, and how much having an "abnormal" upbringing changes that. Parents and the home life they create set more or less 98% of what the child considers "normal" with friends, mass media, and school making up the other 2%. I wasn't raised in a vlogging household (too old for that) but I was raised with old fashioned physical and psychological abuse. Even though I have had limited contact with my parents for years, live +300 miles away from them in a different state and never tell them when I'm coming into town, I'm still finding new ways that my upbringing effects my life. Many, many abusive survivors have a shared experience of telling a story they think is funny from childhood to a significant other, then they look over at the end and their SO is crying or horrorified. It fundamentally alters who you are as a person. I grew up thinking it was okay for people to openly scoff or hate when I try to socialize with them because I'm needy, or I talk too much, or I'm boring. I have trouble asserting myself when something hurts me if someone else is enjoying it (like if someone's laying on me in a wrong way trying to cuddle, or even during sex) because I was taught that my pain isn't worth the inconvenience of others changing their behavior. It's normal to hear about your parents' martial and intimacy issues when you're a preteen, I thought, it's just what a close relationship with your mom looks like. These are just the things I've realized; every day I could be doing or thinking 100 things that aren't healthy, or aren't normal, and come from that warped perspective and I don't even know because it's all I've ever known and all I've ever had. Having a healthy "normal" is vital to learning to understand yourself, your identity, your value, your relationships professionally, personally, and with society as a whole, and how to know when you're being mistreated or need help. The kind of upbringing these channels necessitate don't allow for this kind of healthy growth and development. Maybe there's a happy medium, like allowing milestones to take place with the camera off and doing a storytime vlog afterwards, or only filming the kids once they hit a certain age. But I think over the next couple of decades we will start to see a lot of adults coming out of these environments and going straight into therapy because they can't separate their work/home life, feel rejected socially when they aren't the center of a large audience's attention, and can't enforce their own boundaries.
Wow. The one part about were you don't make your discomfort or pain known because of the physical and psychological abuse you were raised with really hit home with me. I still don't really say anything when I'm sick and just ignore it. Or when anything hurts. Now that I'm in my 20's I see that what was "normal" to me was actually fucked up and I don't have to take any of it.

even if there’s “good” family channels, i don’t think you should be allowed to put your kids on the internet without their consent. its clearly exploitative…
Exactly, it's the lack of consent for me 🙅 A child doesn't know any better and shouldn't have to put up with this situation. Besides, once the content is uploaded it doesn't really go even if the YT channel is taken down. Does anyone remember the channel Daddyofive? Those kids suffered a lot of abuse and thankfully got taken away from the family, while the channel got taken down, but I'm sure to this day people can still find re-uploads of the videos where they get heavily "pranked" on.
The problem is that children can’t consent to something like this, they just can’t comprehend the full impact of being under constant and public scrutiny.
This is why I get uncomfortable with people putting up their kids pictures on social media. I was following someone on Twitter who posted a picture of their niece who's a baby. An hour later she apparently got a few disgusting replies from people asking to see what was underneath the dress and she made an announcement saying anyone who does that again will be blocked. And my mind was saying - so, you didn't learn a lesson from this? Don't post your children on social media. I don't care if the family is following/friend you. Send that shit to the DMs!
Children can't consent, the parents must consent for the children, supposedly the parents know what's best but this is such an abusive misuse of that power
If it was only a certain aspect of a family’s life as the channel like a family gaming channel, family snowboarding channel, a mountaineering or hiking family channel, then it’d be aight. But like the entirety of a family’s lives within their own household seems like to much of an invasion into another person’s life. Rather than just an aspect that they’d like to share because they enjoy something, it’s everything they do and everything around their lives.
Yes I started seeing merch for that stuff pop up in stores and all I thought was how bad I felt for the 'Ryan' kid who probably has 0 say in anything, and gets miniscule return for the tons of cash he makes whatever platform he's on, which let's be honest probably gets blown by his parents instead of being saved for his education.
That kids gonna end up in the news in like 10 years, people will perform outrage and say "how could we possibly let this happen!" and then continue to do the same thing to the next kid.

The child star to trainwreck pipeline is already well known, but at least there was *some* regulations around working conditions & hours, putting their earnings in a trust etc, and at least they weren't being filmed while behind closed doors in their own home. Family vlogging is a whole new level. I can't imagine being filmed from a really young age, almost groomed to get used to it until I think it's normal.. day to day stuff, embarrassing incidents, private family jokes & emotional moments, all my highs and lows documented for people to pick over, comment on, judge. It's child abuse.
I honestly really appreciate how you can give a majoratively unbiased, yet subjective opinion in almost all of your videos, while still cracking jokes. It shows a level of integrity that I really admire.
Parents turning their underage children into commodities is such a messed up concept. Imagine growing up and realising your private life is exposed (and turned into a reality show) by your own parents just for content and money. I mean, I get embarassed when my mom shows people pictures of me as a toddler. Imagine how it feels to be a part of a video titled "we caught our kid using incognito mode!" or "our kid peed himself in bed!" with millions of views.
I'm very happy about the fact that I would have been a terrible vlog baby. I cried every time I saw a camera and wouldn't stop until I saw the person's face.
It goes too far when you forget that you're supposed to be a parent. Children are human beings. They are not pets or tools to be used to gain views. They are _your kids,_ who you should be looking out for and loving as their own beings, and not as what they can do for you. The second you push that aside and forget the role you _should_ have in their lives, you've overstepped your bounds and you need to be shut down.
When my grandparents bring stuff I said when I was kid I already get so embarrassed, I can't imagine what would feel to not only have this moments filmed but posted on youtube, like imagine starting dating someone and maybe they decide to google your name and finding your parents channel, or when you are trying to get a job, your interviewer search you and decides that having someone with this kinda of public image will cause trouble for the company. And this parents are certainly not saving the money their kids are making, they are just expending their children's money. This is a f****** nightmare.
I'm gonna be honest I can't care less what you talk or make vids about, your attitude jokes and just vibe is so nice I know I'd love it either way. Ya know how to give ppl entertainment for even stupid subjects
I remember watching shaytards growing up, they definitely are an insidious concept where it is content that appeals towards kids while exploiting kids. Makes me wonder how a lot of these kids are going to be as teens and adults when they lived 90% of their young lives online as a prop basically
They will be just like their parents --- shallow and empty inside, always longing for something (purpose) they can't elucidate, let alone buy with their child-exploitation dollars. It is sad to say, but the kids be greedy, perpetually unhappy wastes of space just like mommy and daddy, willing to do whatever it takes (besides honest, hard work which makes the world a better place) to profit.

The videos are beyond abysmal and terrifying to the point that I actually stopped letting her watch them with me, because I literally couldn't handle seeing them. The father had his young daughter dip her hands in melted wax to build up layers, and when she GENUINELY told him she didn't want to do it anymore, he didn't let her. He had them all stay at what was the lowest rated hotel in New York and they were literally yelled and cursed at by the neighbor for talking too loudly in their room. Yeah growing up with all eyes on you is pretty gross. I've been/are going through a similar experience and it's not pleasant at all. Humans need privacy and the ability to operate of their own free will. This hyper controlling wanna be God state takes that all away. It's gross. @@LucifersfursonaI don’t think they were trying to nullify anything, they were just saying “hey these videos have a funny feel to them”
Not-so-hot take but if you're not really allowed to have a TH-cam account if you're under 13 then TH-cam shouldn't allow extensive publication of footage of children under the age of 13.
@@BATTIS94 Know Veritasium, the science-channel?

This is a perfect term for it
@@Lucifersfursona it's not a made-up one either, emotional inсеst and parentification are real terms for describing emotionally abusive family dynamics.
Only family vlog channel I watch is urban rescue ranch. Just a Texan man, his birds, a kangaroo named DaBaby and his son Poggers.
Oh, a new Kappa Kaiju Video! ...I wonder if one will ever be about Empress Theresa. I'd love his take on it.
Is the sons name Poggers?
another problem i can think of involves a bit of a story - i was like, 12 or so when youtube started, and if you asked me even back then at that age if i'd like to turn my life into some sort of "documentary", i'd be on board for it all! i was so obsessed with stuff like that as a kid, and with the idea of being famous, that i would have been thrilled by the idea of having every dramatic part of my life edited and turned into some sort of "movie". hell, i even used to have every intention of doing it myself with my old flip camera (lol).

Here's why I've always been incredibly wary of these kinds of channels:
The thing that a lot of people raised under culturally "normal" circumstances don't immediately appreciate is how much that "normality" collectively grounds you to the contemporary world you end up spending your life adult life in, and how much having an "abnormal" upbringing changes that.
@@co7769 As lousy as it is that we relate to stuff like this, I'm glad we aren't alone. Take care of yourself. Wow haha that green bay packers joke was awesome! There was a lot of tension in this video!
even if there’s “good” family channels, i don’t think you should be allowed to put your kids on the internet without their consent. its clearly exploitative…
Exactly, it's the lack of consent for me 🙅
A child doesn't know any better and shouldn't have to put up with this situation.
Postal Reptiles?
Children can't consent, the parents must consent for the children, supposedly the parents know what's best but this is such an abusive misuse of that power
If it was only a certain aspect of a family’s life as the channel like a family gaming channel, family snowboarding channel, a mountaineering or hiking family channel, then it’d be aight. But like the entirety of a family’s lives within their own household seems like to much of an invasion into another person’s life. Rather than just an aspect that they’d like to share because they enjoy something, it’s everything they do and everything around their lives.
Yea it's one thing if it's a family hobby though, and another if it's a family *life*.
Channels like Ryan’s World drive me nuts
Yes I started seeing merch for that stuff pop up in stores and all I thought was how bad I felt for the 'Ryan' kid who probably has 0 say in anything, and gets miniscule return for the tons of cash he makes whatever platform he's on, which let's be honest probably gets blown by his parents instead of being saved for his education.
That kids gonna end up in the news in like 10 years, people will perform outrage and say "how could we possibly let this happen!" and then continue to do the same thing to the next kid.

i barely care about the lives of some of the ppl i know why would i invest time in the life of some strangers lol
Most of their viewers are kids who are jealous of their lives. Or creeps
I think there's a serious mental issue with anyone who enjoys this type of content, it's mind numbingly stupid child exploitation featuring a bunch of ass holes (the parents) who don't deserve their money, don't give back to the community whatsoever, and if it weren't' for the algorithm these pathetic wastes of space wouldn't have ever gotten rich since they have no real skills or talents. I can't even begin to understand how someone could derive enjoyment from watching such content.
The closes thing to family vlog channel that I watch is JunsKitchen lol what's not to love about cats and cooking

Kappa saying “please keep watching me” like he even had to ask.
That long joke about the Green Bay Packers had me dying
Kappa has filled the space BDG left when he stopped doing unraveled. Random deep dives and a fashion sense I can only describe as "his."

No idea what the reference/joke was, the movie I'm guessing, but it caught me so off guard because no one ever talks about North Dakota. So with Kappa mentioning a place I live fairly close to it just felt nice.

I know this has nothing to do with the video but i really didn't expect to see my name there at the end oh my goodness
rachel and jun is the gold standard of family vlogs
fact
And cats.
The irony of this video is that Kappa literally looks like my father...but with darker hair.
Kappa’s fashion keeps rolling wild magic surge if everything on the wild magic table was amazing
(this is a D&D joke btw if you didn’t get it)
That jazz theme of godot in the backgroudn is on fukcing point
Not gonna lie, it's an active struggle to keep my eyes off of your shirt. It looks amazing
i really liked that one joke he made about the greenbay packers
yooo another kappa kaiju vid! we're feasting tonight bois!!
Love the button down shirts you’re beginning to collect and show off, Kappa.
I freaking love it when a new video drops!
I feel like FGTEEV is not a bad family channel they make gaming videos instead of actual vlogs which is actually cool and it looks like they dont force their kids to be apart of their videos
The content gods have blessed me with 3 Kappa videos in one month
Thank you content gods
I scopophobia, nothing life altering but enough to where it make me antsy if I dwell on it; for that reason alone I can't stand family vlogs. On the same level of looking through a strangers window to watch the family inside; but in this instance the family knows you're there and even tries to make it interesting for you. Creepy.
