    My question to this movie is: Why does the Thinning need to be done like this?
    How did the overpopulation get this bad? I'd think you'd notice this kind of problem... before you'd have to start killing children and teenagers. Why not do the China thing and have a "1 kid only" policy? Are there old people in this world or do you get Thinned once you leave the workforce? How do hospitals work, do you get healthcare, or are you left to die because it's more "efficient"?
    How is the exam graded? Is there a set number of students who need to be Thinned out each time, and they just pick from the lowest grades up until they reach that number? Or is there a score you have to pass to be safe? Well, officially. Obviously it's corrupt and they choose the kids anyway. But what's the story they tell the public?

    • @mani_icon3135

      There’s a movie called “What happened to Monday?” which shows the concept of overpopulation and an unethical approach to that in a better way than The Thinning. Like they show the effect of overpopulation and lack of resources better than this movie.

    • @cractor6307
      @cractor6307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

It's so interesting seeing how his commentary and editing style has developed in the last year or so I've been watching, undeniably better not just from the content he talks about to how he conveys the information. And as a film student, it's super interesting to hear his thoughts on films i'd never subject myself to [like the thinning or airplane mode] but also his little tangents on films that he DOES like and what makes them appealing to him.

You end up analysing sound, use of colour, of composition and set design, of everything on-screen during scenes, of the way things are deliberately constructed to establish meaning and emotion, especially in regards to the context of the time. Only issue is I now cant just watch films to enjoy them, when I stick on something i think is gonna be entertaining I end up marvelling at the cinematography. Studying it gives a whole new insight and it's definitely worth looking into!! :D

      All those topics you mentioned sound SO fuckin cool. Maybe film school IS up my alley. Though, money is an issue, and law being interesting and paying way more... but creativity! Art! ahh!
      What made you decide to go into film school?

    • @brickashcroft
      @brickashcroft 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ozzi4647 Oh, money's a struggle and the film course I'm following is in a transitional thing between secondary school [high school for america, I'm in the uk] and university. Honestly, I've always been big on art and artistry and aim for a career within the film industry one day, though it's not too likely with how competitive of a market it is.
      And, god - the way films are made truly is a slow, painful process. One of the films that we studied was Trainspotting, a UK film from 1996 ft Ewan McGregor about Scottish dr-g addicts. Its gritty, dark, and heavily political but by god is it marvellous. There isn't a single moment in the film that can't be analysed to it's core between the surrealist sequences of ov-rd-sing or quitting heroine cold turkey. While I hated the film first watching it because of how bleak it was (definitely worth checking content warnings beforehand) i could spend hours writing about all the creative decisions regarding cinematography, colour, music (the use of britpop is brilliant) and the way that the audience is brought into the scene via active spectatorship, made to feel involved and question things rather than just watch to feel entertained.
      Aside from all that stuff, though, film doesnt need to be studied in a professional environment to be admired. Most things can be researched online and all it takes is for you to be aware of what you're watching. Stopping and wondering why something is made a certain way - why the camera is positioned like that, why the colour and music enhance the feelings of the scene, what is in frame and why, etc.
      Pretty much just watch any film you like, pause it at any moment, and see what you can take away from it!!! It's one of the few times where "no wrong answers" rings true bcs no matter what bullshit you make up about a sequence, as long as you can support it you're good.

    I appreciate your comment about 'You liking a movie doesn't mean it's good, and a movie being good doesn't mean you have to like it.' I feel like a lot of people could benefit from learning this.
    Like, there's this 1990 animated version of the Nutcracker Prince that I adore. Is it a good movie? Eh, it's well animated and voiced, but the pacing is kinda weird and it's way longer than it should be. I still love it though.
    Meanwhile, Grave of the Fireflies is a fantastic, incredibly well animated movie with a heartwrenching plot. Do I like it? Not... in the sense that I'd want to watch it. Movie wouldn't make money, too uncomfortable, nobody would see it so nobody would fund it. I don't agree that "nitpicking" about world building isn't important. The way I see it, world building is an important part of the process of creating a work of fiction, especially if it's set in what is essentially the real world but changed slightly. In those cases, a worldbuilding problem isn't just a quirky mistake, it's on par with a break in reality.

    • @who_the_fuck_is_riley5813
      @who_the_fuck_is_riley5813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It really depends on what it is. Some stories are character driven, so the world building isn't the biggest part of the story. Like the world building in The First Law trilogy is basically just the names of places, because the world isn't really important when the story is entirely about the characters. But if you took the world building out of something like Lord of the Rings or The Stormlight Archive it would be a big deal as they directly impact the story.

    • @BooksandBuns
      @BooksandBuns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah. If you set up a set of rules in your fictional world, whether that be a completely different world or just Earth 2.0, & then break those rules, it will make people break out of their suspension of disbelief & ruin the media for them. Same for setting rules right off the bat that make no sense. Humans are logical being, we like our patterns, & if something is illogical & doesn't follow a pattern, we'll notice it immediately. Good story telling is good for the exact reason that it is enjoyable & crafted so well that people can suspend their disbelief for the duration of it

      idk, i think overpopulation is generally a problem as in theres too many people in certain areas but wealth inequality as well as an array of different things also factor into that like a giant big soup of problems to which overpopulation/the density of people in one location is quite minor.
      This doesn't mean overpopulation is *the* problem though, I just think it's an underlying factor that can cause stress.
      Comment edited for clarification; I'm talking in regards to overpopulation in singular areas like cities where people are packed together. Overpopulation problen as a whole tends to actually just be an issue of over consumption rather than population.

Each family could only have two children. I can't give a description well that will do it justice, but please look up Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. When you pointed out the fact that techonological adavancements can be used to overcome overpopulation, I was just thinking that it would have been more interesting if the characters discovered the "dark truth" that the culling wasn't actually needed and instead the culling is somehow being used to control society, the most obvious way being slowly killing off people the government sees as "undesirable" or a "threat" (and suddenly I'm reminded of the 1920s Eugenics movement that sometimes used IQ tests in order to label people "feebleminded" and justify having their tubes tied against their will. Wow the historical parellels here could have made for interesting commentary.)

    The hitting water thing and being knocked out can work as depicted.
    Water is VERY hard if you hit it with a sudden impact, and it looks like Logan fell head and neck first. There's also the issue of going really fast then suddenly stopping is not something the brain likes. For comparison, jumping off a cliff into an ocean is equivalent to jumping off of a skyscraper onto concrete
    Which is why when (girl) jumps in after, she goes legs first to minimize her impact point. That's like a standard jumping into water thing
    Everything else in this movie is completely whatever though

    The way America (and other wealthy countries but I live here so it’s what I can speak to) deals with disability benefits is effectively a form of eugenics anyway. A single person with no strong family support can’t live on Medicaid/workers comp/SSI disability. Not only are the payments low, but someone “benefiting” from those systems can’t have more than $2500 in the bank at any time. No savings account, no backup fund for hospitalizations or surgeries. Nothing.
    They also have to deal with being followed and tracked, and if they are seen doing anything which could possibly be a job (photographing a family event, acting as assistant minister at a church service, weeding their yard) they get kicked off benefits and told to find work.
    Just. Just make that movie set a few decades ahead and the big reveal is it’s just the system we actually currently live in.
