And let's take note of "for it's time". It didn't age well. Lots of games CAN age well, and have. And Skyrim didn't. Days Gone has so far, and will continue to do so, as no other zombie games have even come close to mastering the genre like it has.

Somehow I think the slow beginning is kind of genius in tandem with the story.
You just run around, fetch, kill, hunt and explore, and almost forget there's anything else.
So when the deeper story missions finally come around, they are able to hit much harder than what you'd expect them to do from just looking at the story on paper.
The story is nothing special at all, but by delivering it so far down the road, in such contrast with how you've engaged with the game up until that point, I actually think it creates some beautiful moments.
Makes you see and appreciate the small things, which otherwise would've been so forgettable as they usually are in generically told love stories.
It's not the story but how they tell it that makes it pretty damn good in the end.
The gameplay itself is phenomenal in its genre.

I bounced off Days Gone a year or two ago because it was a slow burn and I expected a bit too much too early on, but now knowing that going in, I've been playing it again and having a lot of fun slowly getting stronger and upgrading my bike piece by piece. I know I'm way late to the game, but I finally pulled the trigger and grabbed it about a week ago. Having now completed the game and just about everything in it, I can say without question this is one of my favorite games I have EVER played. In my opinion it's one of the most satisfying zombie games.
I'm sure when it first came out, it was blah, but now ? it's great.
Full Disclaimer - It's my opinion that anything Sam Witwer touches, especially in gaming , is gold. Been a fan of his work since forever ago, before he did the Force Unleashed games and anything else. His voice acting especially is always so well done. Anyone who doesn't know who he is, he plays the main character, Deacon St. John, in Days Gone.
Check out his history of voice acting. Guy is a legend.
Great vid, excellent take on Days Gone, in it's current form.

I really think the infected in this game are the most fleshed out of any other franchise. The detail they added is well above any other. The Freakers still need food and water. They have feeding grounds and will migrate from their den to water, then to a feeding ground. They also have a sleep cycle. As the player you use this information and that predictably to your advantage. Like not going out at night and avoiding migratory paths. At least until you can take out hoards. Then you know exactly where and when they will be.

    @aaronmccarty1390 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is what I’ve always wanted in a post apocalyptic zombie action/rpg style game. It has systems and mechanics that other zombie games just don’t have - and while those systems/mechanics aren’t the best at times, it’s the frame work for what Day Gone 2 would have possibly mastered, if it ever came to pass.
Playing on a hard difficulty left me feeling nervous at all times when I was out and about in the world - that made me prepare, sneak, plan my outings, which is what you’d actually do in a situation like this had you survived in real life. I felt a sense of relief when I got into the camps or Nero labs that I was actually safe - kinda cool to have some emotions for a game like that. The story was alright and lacked in some areas, but I was genuinely stoked for Deacon when he had “good” moments in the game.
I played the game for free between God Of War: Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy and it filled the gap better than any “new” game could have. After playing Hogwarts for a little bit now… I kinda like Days Gone more content wise. Something about cruising on the zombie filled road and blasting them in the face that makes me more happy than casting spells (both great games, don’t hate me, I just have a preference 😅)
Is the game perfect, absolutely not. But it was good at the perfect time for me and that counts for something. I’d give it a solid 8 with room for growth in a sequel.. too bad we won’t get that because I’d preorder it without hesitation. If you’re on the fence about this one, just get it!

It was a beautiful world as well. The fact you could have so many freakers chasing you at once on screen without a crash was a technical marvel for the ps4. I still play it on pc today. 5:42 yeah that's because you can't have the best guns at the beginning of the game to take down a horde. You need to understand that this game is not only about hordes - it's about lack of resources and you have to search, it's a part of surviving in a post-apocalyptic world. But not all of this is true - actually there are hordes at the beginning of the game and you can try to take them down. This game wouldn't be this good if you could just go in and kill 500+ freaks at the beginning of the game trust me. So I think Days Gone is just good at it's own way. Btw love it and crossed my fingers to see a sequel one day.

I think an issue some people don't bring up or think about is "open world game fatigue." So I played "Days Gone" and enjoyed it before I played 2015's "Dying Light" and I just couldn't get into Dying Light. Everything felt so tedious and derivative and I wound up uninstalling it. A while later after playing some titles from different genres I went back to give Dying Light another shot and wound up enjoying it as well. When you sink like several days worth of time doing the same tasks it gets repetitive and there's a good chance you'll get sick of it and want some change. Def think game reviewers should keep stuff like that in mind.

Days Gone is and has always been a great game. The only problem with it is that it could hardly fit on the PS4. It was really pushing that hardware to the edge and you see the hard time the devs had to optimize it. The first couple of months there were bugs and framerate issues. Some reviewers just decided to trash it, as they do with smaller studios, while being completely lenient when bigger devs are involved regarding the same kind of issues. Long story short, play it on the PS5 to see it stretch its legs. A beautiful game, awesome bike riding and hordes. A long and solid story with memorable characters along the way. Starts slow but it gets there. Just give it a chance.

I really viewed this game as a post-apocalypse Red Dead, with what felt like steel horses, and camps that were just little towns. The relationships were strong and the overall feel of the game was good once the jank was removed. The story is NOT flawless as I feel like an enemy at one point of the game seemingly comes out of nowhere to be an adversary, and it seemed like as quickly as he popped up he was dispatched. A very good game that I beat twice and given it was free for all PS5 owners, it’s a must-play since you have it in your library. A VERY strong 8.

  • @darthioan
    @darthioan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You probably forgot the lore (and the mechanic of it). Zombie hordes are more likely to be met at night (during the day, most zombies hibernate), and it is more of them (when you eventually find a horde). A chunk of the horde tends to respawn after you mowed down a part of it.
I think it was a huge marketing error to present the horde right at the beginning, as something you will have to deal with regularly, instead of presenting the game, and showing a glimpse of the horde at the end, as a big reveal/mystery. I really liked the slow burn approach, how the game evolves from a survival horror with simplistic stealth elements, where you have to go around and slowly build up your resource pool, stock up and traps, baits, grenades and ammo, manage them carefully, pick your targets and your battles carefully towards later stages when the game turns more into an open world GTA style mayhem, where you are more or less a glass cannon which has to use the environment and various items to create a funnel of death for zombies and the human ai alike. It feels very satisfying, and it is one of the very very few games (GTA and Red Dead Redemption 2 being notable examples, Assassins Creed being counter examples) which provide a meaningful and balanced progression system, and you can handle places and targets you used to avoid, while never feeling overpowered and indestructible (worst offender being AC Valhalla, where once you reach a certain progression point, you are in god-mode even on the hardest difficulty, and everything the game throws at you is chaff to be swept aside without the need to employ any strategy, make use of any items or skills, but by merely mashing the attack button).
Unfortunately, the horde is never anywhere near in size to what was presented originally. And, unless you make mistakes because you are unable to read the situation (which is still cool, because tthere are plenty of ambushes and traps set up against you), the game never really puts you in a situation where you have to fight to the death, desperately trying to get away from the horde, or a human ai ambush because the AI is set to cease chasing you after quite a short distance. Unlike Witcher 3 or RDR 2 (for instance), where the AI will continue to chase UNLESS the distance gap becomes too great, here, the AI resets and goes back to its initial position once it hits an invisible wall. Anytime the game puts you in danger, or you put yourself in danger because you could not spot it in time, just run away and keep running. You rarely end up in a situation (like RDR2) where a bunch of bad guys chase you, and now you end up in front of a bear, and then after escaping that too, a bunch of wolves come at you, and you are near a town where you are wanted and the lawmen also come at you, and the whole thing turns into a Benny Hill free for all, where everyone is fighting everyone but also chasing you, and you maybe have a 10% chance to make out alive. And it never gets old, and you never feel safe, and there is no obvious, consistent AI cheese you can use (which is the case in Days gone, be patient to kite the AI by running and rolling far enough for it to disengage and reset). Trying his in RDR2 never works, and you often get yourself in even worse situations, then fall of a cliff, get run off by a train, fall of the horse or get and unlucky shot to the brain for the last bit of hit points and die.

In my opinion days gone is a 10/10 for me I really enjoyed this game and I’m playing my 2nd run on ps5 now, I feel everyone is just on the bandwagon and never actually put at least 10 hours in before judging the game, Games nowadays don’t get played for yourselves it’s always what everyone else thinks.

How you describe not every game needing to be a masterpiece is how I’ve felt about so many recent games that every YT reviewer trashed. Such as Gotham Knights, a game with problems, but is still enjoyable.

Or on the other hand, a game like god of war ragnarok which is overrated

I bought the game shortly after release on the PS4 and even playing through a good 10 hours without access to the bug fixes I still had a great time. A fun game to platinum and gets even better on survival difficulty, removing the ability to fast travel, no hud, having to be aware of your surroundings by actually listening to the environment and not relying on the mini map to show enemy location. The PS5 upgrade was a nice little bonus.

I got it day 1 - it's an excellent game. The lack of polish killed it
I'm actually a bit sad thinking about we'd be close to a sequel now if it was delayed a couple of months to tidy things up. It's a shame. Sam Witwer is a fantastic actor.
(P.s. - i bet you didn't know the actor for Boozer - Jim Pirri - played Angelo Bronte in Red Dead 2 👀)

Played it and loved it not knowing the gossip around it. More than a solid game. I found myself engrossed in the story, gameplay and cautious survival exploration. I want the sequel so badly. Sony's hidden gem.

Definitely was ! This is far better then most games that sold 10 plus million in my opinion! This is what I call a sleeping gem no one tried and it's a shame because the next one could have been almost done by now and probably even more mind blowing ! We here love this game .

I don’t know man….the beginning was just so slow that I just couldn’t get into it but my son loved it.

One of my favorite underrated games is called "Second Sight". It was SOOO unique and cool but was overshadowed by a subpar similar game that got more press "Psyops: The mindgate Conspiracy". I would LOVE a remake of Second Sight one of these decades. Also, Xenogears is a CRIMINALLY underrated game. One of the most important games of all time in my eyes.

It wasn't done dirty. I've been a Days Gone defender since DAY 1... I loved it and it was the first game that I ORGANICALLY got the platinum.
BUT, as much as I love the game... it was fundamentally broken and unfulfilled at launch. No NG+, no challenge modes, and the technical performance was BY FAR the worst of ANY Sony 1st-party exclusive... and not just of the PS4 generation, but probably ever.
And while I was still able to enjoy the game, I can understand how it would have turned most folks off.

And its STILL buggy AF to this day...people are pretending like everything's better now. Its not, there's so many bugs still! Hordes not appearing at all is still an issue among hundreds that I've dealt with on my playthrough in the last month.

Didn’t know the game existed. Got on my plus. Being a zombie post-apocalyptic gamer/movie watcher, this game was the most satisfying ever. Yes it was slow at the start but that’s real LIFE, but it was tense and terrifying having to ride out into the shits.
Open world and not one track like the Last of Us. The intelligence of the infected being able to open doors and think not one track minded either.
    Completely underrated!
I’ve already had 4 play throughs on my PS5. But like music there are are two kinds not matter the genre it is either a good song or a bad song. This is a good game. Need a sequel

A game that I truly believe is underrated is “Lollipop Chainsaw”. That game was so fun to play, the over the top jokes and the crazy gameplay. It’s just a really fun game. And the boss fights are the standout. Plus you get to play as cheerleader with a chainsaw and kill zombies.

Thanks for doing this video Luke, I love this game! I just finished it a few days ago, I bought it on discount for $15AUD and became quickly obsessed with it! Super satisfying gunplay, wonderful motorcycle gameplay, and a pretty satisfying story by the end of it. Horde gameplay is always an absolute thrill. That tease at the end for Days Gone 2 really could have been something special, I'm so devastated it's not happening anymore. Regardless, thanks for doing this video mate, I appreciate your unabashed love for the game :)
