The Idol: 10x More Dangerous Than Euphoria

  • Breaking down what makes The Idol a worse and more sinister show than Euphoria. If you're looking for cringey dialogue, cults and the male gaze then this is the show for you! 🤣 This is yet another delightful product from Sam Levinson who wrote Euphoria, and is basically everything bad about Euphoria but x1000. Also, the Weeknd is literally the ick in human form, and his character's whole sunglasses and attitude is just... wow 🤣

    That sounds like a fair and honest review, I was kinda wondering how the show is but never got myself to watch it because I let the behind the scenes drama affect my opinion on it. From what I heard the finale will have a twist that shows that Joselyn will topple Tedros, get her success and become the leader of the cult. For me that sounds like they wanted to do a "feminist ending" that shows that Jocelyn was the dominat part all along but it doesn't come across as believable considering how dependent she seemed before. Anyway, I'm always happy to see a new Serena Video so thanks for that 😊
    Ps: I love your hair and your style! The earnings are looking great on their own but in my opinion they don't really match as an asymmetrical pack, I'm more used in seeing asymmetrical packs where both of them are hanging earrings and one is shorter than the other or one is a hanging, the other is an earring plug. Good alternatives for fame gone wrong would be the animes Perfect Blue who talks about stalkers and loss of identity and the more recent Oshi No Ko that shows the reality of famous people and how tough can be, in the idol it looked like they wanted to make just a trauma porn show, instead of actually telling a story, and using names of famous people that suffered with toxic fame like Britney Spears, it looked just exploitative cuz, guys be real 🙄.

    I don't like Euphoria either. The characters are so unlikable. And to me wasn't realistic. I didn't understand why everyone was so obsessed with it. But I'm so glad people are finally sick of Sam Levinson over sexualizing teen characters. To me Euphoria should have been based off college students. That would nage more sense. The Idol proved again how disgusting and raunchy the over sexualized scenes in both The Idol and Euphoria. The weekend really thought it was a role of a life time. The whole cult thing went nowhere and didn't need to be in the storyline. The ending was so dumb too. It was just a terrible show that no one asked for.

    I'll open with a serious question - what is Jocelyn's last name? Because I don't believe she has one. The supposed main character, and I don't think she has a last name. Great.
    I say this because, how many contemporary pop artists can one name that only have one name? I can only think of Cher and Madonna, and sorry, but if they wanted Jocelyn to be on the same level... I can't even say it, it's so evident she's just a run of the mill artist.
    I kept thinking - why do all these people love and care about her? Genuinely, why? She has zero personality, and except for her best friend, they all have so much more of a spark than her (I'm partial to Xander, actually). Furthermore, what kind of artist is she? I have no clue; what kind of music did she used to do? Beats me. Is she turning a new leaf? Is she doing a 180? I do not know.
    So I couldn't get behind her as a person or an artist, so I'm left with nothing. Even her wardrobe, her hair, her makeup, nothing about her caught my eye, which perhaps explains why after watching 3/5 eps, I came out thinking that this show has no main character. It claims to have one, but it does not - whatever "story" it wanted to tell, does not feature a main character. Not Jocelyn, not Tedros, not even them as a couple qualifies.
    Oh, and Serena, you're such a sweetheart, you didn't even mention how fucking BORING this show is, it drags because it has no plot - and how the hell is that POSSIBLE with the amount of episodes it has??
    I know what happened in the last two episodes, and I'm good lol.
    I wish that, if the show wasn't going to be from Jocelyn's POV, then that it HAD a POV. Jesus, it's not that hard, Sam! I'm not a writer and even I know that. Just someone, anyone, who observe what's up, that we could empathize with and root for (because, you know, sorry, but I can't root for a cardboard of a character like Jocelyn). Should've been Xander, this failed "idol" who's stuck by a rising star nonetheless, and can speak to the ugliness of the industry, if it wasn't going to hit hard with an unflinching look at what being a star looks like these days.
    And, SPOILERS.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    If Jocelyn was going to be some manipulative mastermind, I wish there had been hints of that, of her "people" having quiet talks that Tedros and the "cult" only catching snippets that we, as the audience, would at the time misunderstand as them being worried for her when in reality it would be them kind of being skeptical about whether her game of manipulation of Tedros would actually yield good results, but still being well aware that Jocelyn is an absolute shark.
    Give the people a wide eyed, doe-like pop star who just pretends to be fragile, and behind the scenes can be as ruthless as that record label woman, but she only let's those she trusts or can discard see that side of her.

      I absolutely hate this show and Sam levinson with my core but Joselyn was the only remotely fleshed out character. It’s said at the beginning that she was a child star and trying to shed her child image with this new record. It’s why she was so nervous and so dead set on being hyper sexual she wanted to break out of the kid image which is why is implied that she leaked her own “donut glaze” photo to get people talking about her sexuality then sell her whole abuse story to get sympathy, then come back with her break through album which shows her as a “mature” artist that makes gritty “real” music. I feel like this is the one part that they probably kept from the female writer that was fired and then Sam came on and added the weekends stupid plot and the naked teenagers and ruined what could have been an actually interesting show. It’s ridiculous that they just try to imply that she is able to just manipulate this cult leader with her body and that he won’t be able to abuse her and he will work in her favor even tho he literally tortured his ex. Basically saying that women have control of the abuse they receive and it’s so repulsive.

    • @OffKiraDeux
      @OffKiraDeux ปีที่แล้ว

      @nitely2345 I fully disagree that she was fleshed out (although... maybe it's relative considering the horrendous writing as a whole).
      As for the whole she's actually in control of her own abuse... does Sam... think that since she was "in control"... that she wasn't, in fact, abused? Even the whole thing with her mom ends up on such a weird tone. Sam, buddy, we're not stupid, Jocelyn isn't manipulating jack shit with Tedros just because you pull a twist out of your ass, she's being sucked into his world (God knows why - maybe an interest point to explore in another timeline) until you decided that oh no, she's a "strong" woman, of course she's pulling the strings all along.
      Ok Sam, whatever you say.

      @@OffKiraDeux I mean in relativity to the other characters at least he tried to give her a “purpose” most characters were barely there. I guess he only gives screen time to actresses that agree to full nudity. I had no idea Jennie’s character had a name like til the last episode lol. I know they said it before but it was so utterly unimportant the information wasn’t retained. She was just there to give a last second “see? Joselyn is in control!” It’s so dumb cause regardless of whether Joselyn wants to get beaten with a hairbrush and consented to it it doesn’t make it any less fucked up that she’s with someone who not only tortured other women and is traveling with a naked 17 year old but he is purposely dating her because he thinks he can exploit her mental health issues and then the shows magnificent way to “victimize” tedros is by saying “oh but he’s so afraid that she will leave him and fuck another dude that he won’t actually beat and torture her, I know he threatened to kill her but nope… she’s in control guys I promise.” Basically she was able to get him to drop his entire cult and give it to her just cause she slept with her ex…. Legitimately the show could not be more ridiculous.

    • @OffKiraDeux
      @OffKiraDeux ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @nitely2345 This entire show should've been a movie... then no one would've had to suffer thru it for 5hrs.
      I don't know why I remembered that Jennie was called Dyanne (maybe because... fuck is this spelling), but truly, it was just another boring as shit "plot line", I use quotation marks because it's all so underwritten and uninteresting that it's insulting to refer to anything in this show seriously as plot.
      Calling his little groupies has cult is also insulting, it implies he has the charisma of a cult leader, which lol. It's funny how the show seems purposely unwilling to fully commit to him being a dud when WHO would think this man has even a single brain cell to control anyone but a vulnerable teenage girl, let alone the charm to keep all those people plus a woman we should see as a force of nature (Jocelyn) under his control? LOL
      Whatever we have to say about Euphoria, at least there's always shit happening, and there is some legit acting in it, writing aside. Like. They couldn't have found a guy like Jacob Elordi, who can smile pretty and keep up this facade of innocence to those unaware of Nate's true nature? Even the guy who played Nate's dad would make more sense as a cult leader.
      Then again, they gave him a rat tail and kept commenting on it, but the self awareness still flew right over their heads so, what am I talking about lol

    many traumatized people are attracted to ugly cruel people, and many of them need pain because of their past problems and because they got used to it. The show is cringe, but it’s not far from reality. He exposes routine of traumatized people. The problem with his shows is that he glamorizes it instead of showing how destructive and dangerous it is and how to overcome it and get help.

    Id kinda noticed that Jocelyn seems to be kinda conditioned to be so egocentric and so selfish especially when she’s doing a sexy photo shoot and she’s not being considerate with her no nudity contracts that she signed and was arguing with the intimacy coordinator about her boobs popping off too much and she’s say some things like “it’s my body I can do whatever I want with it its also my house as well”, plus while she and Tedros were shopping at a clothing store and she’s trying on some of the outfits and have her provoking Tedros by calling him “Gay” as if it’s something to be degrading and that triggers me as a Bisexual person which I get it she’s only saying it because he’s was being toxic and he’s has a fragile ego but I don’t like it that she’s trying to be toxic back at him thinking it’s funny and it’s not and I don’t know how people find this kind of humor amusing but I don’t because I don’t like people like her and I wouldn’t trust her to be around me or any of my gay besties but hey I’d guess that’s just me

  • @aarontruong354
    @aarontruong354 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The show is a complete dumpster fire (I haven't seen it lol) and it's for the very fact that it fails completely on a conceptual level. Much like how Euphoria fails to be a criticism of youth anguish when all it does it show it in its purest form and has nothing else to offer. You can't tell me that teenagers having sex and doing drugs is bad when that's all they do during the show.
    I mean yeah, we all know Sam Levinson is a creep and a joke of a writer (pick a struggle lmao) but what really surprised me about all this is The Weeknd. I understand why people don't like his music, but he's actually my favorite artist and this has been a pretty sad turn of events for him I must say. See, the thing about The Weeknd is that I always operated under the assumption that his music was written with a character in mind. It does get very dangerous and manipulative, but I always interpreted it as a man who revels in his own self-destructive tendencies because he can't feel alive otherwise. The Weeknd (the character in the music) is a cautionary tale about a man who pushes all of his loved ones away because he's afraid of connection. He drowns himself in drugs and sex in order to feel alive, even knowing that his pleasures are only temporary he uses that as an excuse to keep doing it. I understand that the music comes off as very visceral and creepy, but I always felt like it was supposed to. And if you're willing to get past that, you'll find some of the most creative use of music as a medium within his songs about depression and loneliness.
    So imagine my surprise when I heard that there's going to be a show where Abel plays a character that's basically the on-screen version of The Weeknd. I was somewhat interested, but once I saw that Sam Levinson was involved, I immediately wrote it off. And everyone on the internet has confirmed my suspicions. What upsets me about this is that it doesn't give me confidence that "The Weeknd" is much of a character anymore. In past interviews, he's pretty earnest and genuine. Now, he's talking about how Tedros is this "superego that all men need to stay away from" (paraphrasing) but that's like actually insane how hard he just told on himself for saying that lmao. Now it just feels like this is his self-insert character and, like you said, is an excuse to act out absolutely horrific fucked up sexual fantasies. Yes, his music was kinda like that too, but for one, the music was actually good (to me), and two, I always felt like I could separate The Weeknd from Abel based on interviews throughout the years, and now I don't think I can. So if anyone wants to come to me describing The Weeknd, as you say, "the ick in human form," I cannot refute that lol

    I don't think you're wrong about female sexualization, especially when it comes to teenager, but not only. I'm kinda sick of those type of series...I can't watch them. It makes me sick and I think they are extremely unnecessary. Tv series are too rough in our days, with a lot of s*x, r*pe, drugs, m*rder and so on. I kinda miss those series like Gilmore girls when there are episodes with no such situations and nothing happens, it's just a normal boring day:))) but in nowadays they tent to include 3 m*rders, 2 r*pes, smoking like crap and fights in one episode:)) its so annoying. Plus, lets be serious! Those are the most watched series... especially by teenagers.
    They romanticize those fked up things and some teens are like "omg, how cool is that he beats her up but he still loves her and he's so romantic". Like wtf. Or how cool it is yo smoke shits all day and be a fked up teenage. Its wrong.
    And again, there tv series are too rough, so violent. Those images will be in our mind maybe forever, they really had an impact and I wish they will stop making those craps.

    You could've worded this so much better, the bit about you not understanding the intricacies of male friendship is so dumb. You don't need to be a man to write a good male character.
    I'm not saying that it's a good show because I don't think it has a consistent message and the symbolism doesn't make sense, it's just there to add to the visuals and it's not strong.
    But if you're gonna criticize the writting, put a bit more effort into it and don't say sexist shit?

      of course you don't need to be a man to write a good male character, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was saying it.. For me personally I feel more comfortable writing from the female perspective, and I don't have many guy friends. But in general, when writing about a different gender you need to be extra careful and conscious because there's all these intricacies at play... like gendered dynamics, how the patriarchal society affects everyone differently etc.

    • @SpyJay
      @SpyJay ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I personally did disagree here and there with Serena's verbiage, as I tend to whenever people basically say anything along the lines of "men trying to write women" (which falls in the same box of "white men trying to write about diversity" or "heterosexuals trying to write LGBTQ+"), but I wasn't bothered by it because with this particular show it sounds like her concerns were coming from a genuine place & didn't serve as a social justice PSA about what needs to happen on set/in the writer's room & who needs to be there. Her observations were correct in this case, judging by many other's experience with watching this show.
      On top of that, not only was this show apparently executed by men in it's head divisions, but they pigeonholed themselves into having it be that & that way only. They initially had a female in creative control and she was taken off the project, leaving them with Sam (product of Euphoria..) & Weeknd (who has how much experience with creative control over over a show..?). And then we got what we got, and the message is clear as to why.
      Have men failed to represent women accurately & respectively? Yes. Have many succeeded? Of course! The same can be said with the roles reversed in both scenarios, and I could even tell you that women have failed to represent their own kind accurately. However, the people who complain about the failures of being able to understand each other & our differences play the blame game even when there shouldn't be any fault. They blame men for being "misogynist" and women for being reductionist, when in reality that's not always the case and it could be anything, even a simple misfire.
      But in the case of The Idol, we have enough information to pinpoint where the responsibility lies and I believe that's what Serena was getting at, so I wasn't phased by it.
