The intimacy coordinator scene came off as really sinister to me, it seemed like the show wanted to paint the role in a bad light. Intimacy coordinators exist to make sure actors are not being pressured into exposing more of themselves than they really want. It's an important job that protects actors, it makes sure they won't regret filming a nude scene by giving them enough time to consider it before hand. Its a bit concerning that it seems like Sam Levinson does not like them considering how much nudity was in euphoria. I makes me wonder if there was a intimacy coordinator on the set of euphoria that stopped him from doing short notice nude scenes that the actors hadn't had appropriate time to prepare for and that's why he has a bone to pick with them. Idk it just seemed like the show made the coordinator out to be some prude that won't let Jocelyn to do what she wants with her body and wants to audience to not like him as a way to sow doubt about the job as a whole. I feel like Levinson had alterior motives when he wrote that scene.
exactly!! and seeing as how sydney sweeney was the one to get rid of a lot of her top nude scenes thanks to the intimacy coordinator making it okay to do that. so sam lenvinson is officially a weirdo to me, cause it seems like he’s trying to demonize the people who make actors feel like they can say no to things..
The scene you showed where she shows off the moany song just....I agree so much. Like that's comedy baby. That's the most uncomfortable workplace mockumentary moment energy ever. I would highkey watch a dark comedy of the people who work for/with a deranged celebrity who, as time goes on, keeps losing it more and more. And like the manager and assistant and agent just have to like ...keep accepting it bc they don't really feel like job hunting again😂😂😂
You ever notice how it seems to be almost exclusively men with boundary issues that are really into method acting? That’s interesting . . . Also, as a sex having individual, just hearing about the sex scenes from this show caused my vagina to make the old school Windows Shut Down noise because NO THANK YOU. Anyway, I do hope you recap the remaining episodes because your commentary is priceless, but I would also understand if you couldn’t take that much more psychological damage.
at first i thought Levinson wanted to do a lolita type of thing where its from the perspective of the abuser, but as the show progressed it became clear that that was NOT the intention and they just wanted to make a raunchy show for shock value
THANK YOU! you're the only one who got the point of "it's supposed to make you feel weird. CUZ HE'S THE BAD GUY" the problem for me isn't the story. The problem is the amount of sex scenes and how long they are. We don't need THAT much exposition to understand a concept.
The thing is it was supposed to be directed by a woman and be all about women and the industry, BUT the Weeknd wanted it to be less woke and decided to fire her or whatever. So Sam leviweirdenson stepped in and added every perverted fantasy he couldn't shoot on euphoria.
Abel said before that Tedros was supposed to be a gross man that makes us disgusted. If this really was the intention, he definitely succeeded! (Also, I love how you keep calling Jennie's character Jennie)
conceptually it just doesn’t make sense for him to lack any charisma or appeal and have jocelyn be obsessed with him. in real life even the slimiest most exploitative men have some sort of appeal that draws people in
I would recommend to watch it as a comedy especially when the weeknd appears on the screen, its so funny how bad he is no wonder he had to produce this nightmare fuel because no normal director could work with someone with such a massive ego and poor acting skills lol
to be honest i wonder if the two different tones are the outcome of them making the decision to switch from a female narrated perspective to whatever sam levinson was trying to do. the comedic perspective especially really felt like it was leftover from how the show was supposed to be all the way through, however when you get to the darker scenes it just reads like euphoria reject scenes honestly. it just makes me so sad that we could've had something so much better than this but sick men just have to play out their sick fantasies and don't actually care about making the highest quality art possible.
The Weeknd said that the show is experimental and it was their intention to play around with genre. It’s straddling between satirical comedy and erotic thriller, but people aren’t finding the blend clever or innovative, they’re just finding it confusing. They’re finding the politics of the show confusing too. Is it actually trying to say anything intelligent about sexualising women, abuse & exploitation? It’s got people saying it’s a step backwards for addressing those things. What a mess! 😅
as someone who studied film, you don't need to be somewhat qualified in film to have an opinion or criticism of it, there's film for the masses and there's film for festival/art, this one definitely was made for the masses, which is everyone, so there's no need to feel bad about making jokes or criticism about it
i think the most insane thing to me is that the weekend fired the female director because he didn’t like that the show was taking such a female perspective when the original plot was about a woman’s experience. he’s the one who okay’ed this new take on the message.
Honestly what really disgusts me is the fact that the weekend insisted on being on the show when he clearly has no passion or skills for acting. The script sucks but I feel like the show could have still passed as somewhat mediocre if they replaced the weekend with someone who actually knows how to act. I don't know why he couldn't have just limited his role to just a producer or something. Because it truly just seems like he was looking for an excuse to play out a fantasy on screen where a bunch of people worshiped him and he got to abuse and have sex with an actress like LRD.

The fact that a lot of people are afraid of criticizing The Idol, only because it was selected by the Festival de Cannes is worrying (specially because of the similarities the show’s language shares with Triangle of Sadness, which was also selected at the festival, and had pretty much the same criticism as this one - trying to be ironic but not in on the joke) It’s giving me Last Tango in Paris vibes 😢 specially because the female director dropped out… Film is made for the public, if the public doesn’t like it, it says something about it Speaking as a filmmaker by the way 😂

Just to touch on the brutalization idea: I feel like if as a commentary about the abuse and over sexualization of women by powerful men in Hollywood, it maybe shouldn’t have the oversexualization and mistreatment of women by powerful men in Hollywood behind the scenes. Like any commentary/empowerment message is immediately discredited by the fact that it’s made by Sam Levinson and the weeknd, both of whom had pretty much all creative control and who held all the power in the situation. :(

Do you not hear yourself and honestly I would rather hear that then see these tasteless sex scenes every other second in the show
finally someone who can address this topic and make it funny. love your videos.
eeek! thank you so much

girl you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for this humanitarian work here
The intimacy coordinator scene came off as really sinister to me, it seemed like the show wanted to paint the role in a bad light.
There was a intimacy coordinator in the Euphoria set, her name is Amanda Blumenthal
exactly!! and seeing as how sydney sweeney was the one to get rid of a lot of her top nude scenes thanks to the intimacy coordinator making it okay to do that. so sam lenvinson is officially a weirdo to me, cause it seems like he’s trying to demonize the people who make actors feel like they can say no to things..
G DRAGON KING ,
Or it's a criticism of the little power of intimacy coordinators
I agree, knowing Sam Levinson's history as a director, I found that pretty disturbing
the idol is entirely captured through the male gaze and omg ew ew ew
yes very true
The scene you showed where she shows off the moany song just....I agree so much. Like that's comedy baby. That's the most uncomfortable workplace mockumentary moment energy ever. I would highkey watch a dark comedy of the people who work for/with a deranged celebrity who, as time goes on, keeps losing it more and more. And like the manager and assistant and agent just have to like ...keep accepting it bc they don't really feel like job hunting again😂😂😂
YES - like The Thick of It
/Veep but for the music industry instead of politics. I’d be so in.
@@jesspopps yesssss you get it!!!! That's the vibe! I would gladly binge that 😂😂
You ever notice how it seems to be almost exclusively men with boundary issues that are really into method acting? That’s interesting . . .
Also, as a sex having individual, just hearing about the sex scenes from this show caused my vagina to make the old school Windows Shut Down noise because NO THANK YOU.
Anyway, I do hope you recap the remaining episodes because your commentary is priceless, but I would also understand if you couldn’t take that much more psychological damage.
"The windows shut down noise" is sending me 😅😅
Hahaha I'm stealing that expression 😂🖥️
Jilian: method acting is misogynistic and patriarchal.
I will not watch this show, but I will watch Carley breakdown the episodes.
hahahaha
at first i thought Levinson wanted to do a lolita type of thing where its from the perspective of the abuser, but as the show progressed it became clear that that was NOT the intention and they just wanted to make a raunchy show for shock value
I’m worried that Euphoria Guy feels that way about intimacy coordinators.
me too
"Euphoria Guy" sounds like some evil dark world parallel to Doom Guy
Same
You're our strongest soldier my god it seems impossible to actually sit down and watch the whole show
i tried my hardest
I am obsessed with your commentary, humor, and videos. Also, I've never been recommended so many phenomenal books with such range. Never stop, please!
THANK YOU! you're the only one who got the point of "it's supposed to make you feel weird.
I think you might have missed this but in Ep 3 there's literally a horrific "joke" about the child victims of E***ein's island.
Yeah, screw this show.
Also, that photo from ep 1 was revenge p**n
Abel said before that Tedros was supposed to be a gross man that makes us disgusted. If this really was the intention, he definitely succeeded! (Also, I love how you keep calling Jennie's character Jennie)
jennie is JENNIE to me
conceptually it just doesn’t make sense for him to lack any charisma or appeal and have jocelyn be obsessed with him. in real life even the slimiest most exploitative men have some sort of appeal that draws people in
G DRAGON KING ,,,
@@harp9037Neither him nor Jocelyn have any real personality. They're the wet tissue of people.
thank you for putting yourself through this so we didn’t have to bestie, we’ll pay for your therapy
im gonna need some yes
I would recommend to watch it as a comedy especially when the weeknd appears on the screen, its so funny how bad he is no wonder he had to produce this nightmare fuel because no normal director could work with someone with such a massive ego and poor acting skills lol
watching it as a comedy is so fun there are some great moments
to be honest i wonder if the two different tones are the outcome of them making the decision to switch from a female narrated perspective to whatever sam levinson was trying to do. the comedic perspective especially really felt like it was leftover from how the show was supposed to be all the way through, however when you get to the darker scenes it just reads like euphoria reject scenes honestly. it just makes me so sad that we could've had something so much better than this but sick men just have to play out their sick fantasies and don't actually care about making the highest quality art possible.
So far, from what I’ve heard, dropping Sam Levinson and The Weeknd would literally save the show. Literally that’s it. Crazy
I personally think Lily Rose Depp looks like a melted version of you? I'm being honest here. Don't undersell yourself!
omg so kind thank you
I thought the same exact thing!
Lily Rose Depp is cute, but there’s so much botox or silicone in those cheekbones.
@@uncarley She's gorgeous and you're gorgeous!
G DRAGON KING ...
The idol it's basically a bad +18 wattpad fanfic made by the weeknd and Sam Levinson
the scene of her dancing to her remix got such a great laugh out of me
as someone who studied film, you don't need to be somewhat qualified in film to have an opinion or criticism of it, there's film for the masses and there's film for festival/art, this one definitely was made for the masses, which is everyone, so there's no need to feel bad about making jokes or criticism about it
idk about anyone else but i got a perfectly timed ad when you said “youtube is trying to stop me from speaking the truth” *chefs kiss*
i think the most insane thing to me is that the weekend fired the female director because he didn’t like that the show was taking such a female perspective when the original plot was about a woman’s experience. he’s the one who okay’ed this new take on the message.
I’ve watched SEVERAL videos about this show, and yet - the only thing I ever remember is the ice cube thing. It just feels so off the wall and so forgettable
so BAD
every few minutes my jaw just dropped with the plot presented to me. thank u for sacrificing yourself to relay this horrible information to us
Thank you for making a video on this and for actually talking about the show and going through the episodes and sharing your thoughts and not just reading the same three viral articles like every other videos i I watched
you are this generations hero bc i want to hate on the show SO BAD but i refuse to give them money by hate watching it so.... thanks Carley, hope it was worth the years off your lifespan!!!!
you being the actual IDOL in the whole entire video
omg thank you bestie
"I do not care if i get copy righted..." i thought you were insane until i saw the scene and laughted so hard.
Please do an updated bookshelf tour! that video is how I found your channel a few years back and I still watch it from time to time because I just adore hearing people talk about their book collection, esp yours bc we have similar taste
omg PLEASE review the rest this is everything
omg! on it
The part about the hairbrush is just...... I have no words.
these are the services we live for, Carley
happy to help
THANK YOU. For giving a non biased review. About👏time👏we👏got👏one👏 nobody even mentions the comedic aspects of the show.
As an asexual, your “I LOVE sex 🥴” line really made me laugh 😂👌
I hate the mere sight of this show but i'd watch anything with you in it queen ❤
thank you bestie
this show is viciously disturbing yet i continue to tune in each week 😭 it’s like a car crash you can’t look away from
Always so grateful for the good work you do here.
hahahahahaha happy to help!
PLEASE keep watching and updating as episodes come out!!! this was hilarious and im even watching the show. you said exactly what i was thinking hahahaha
It seems like a car crash that we can't look away from because it's so horrific and keeps getting worse.
carley said i will suffer and take years off of my life for your entertainment and that is a TRUE girlboss
YUP
I’m so sorry but we are going to need that part 2 girlie
The fact that a lot of people are afraid of criticizing The Idol, only because it was selected by the Festival de Cannes is worrying (specially because of the similarities the show’s language shares with Triangle of Sadness, which was also selected at the festival, and had pretty much the same criticism as this one - trying to be ironic but not in on the joke)
It’s giving me Last Tango in Paris vibes 😢 specially because the female director dropped out…
Film is made for the public, if the public doesn’t like it, it says something about it
Speaking as a filmmaker by the way 😂
the fact that the intimacy coordinator is the villain in a sam levinson show is a little sketchy!
thank you, that's all i needed to know about the show haha your jokes make it more bearable and i cant wait for the summary of the next ones!
finally a review of the show that points out how silly and goofy it can be. we need more of that and less rat tail
more comedy less rat tail is my life motto
I laughed way too hard at “ello sistah” 😂 was not expecting that & then the image of troian saying it lol
Carley saying she's not a film bro hurted my feelings,
so sorry bestie
i can never see the weekend the same again😭
same
Agreed
i am so desperate for this show to magically turn around somehow
Locking the intimacy coordinator in a closet probably meets the statutory definition of kidnapping in California. Excited to see how the show will do nothing about that
I’m normally someone who can watch just about anything, but the first ten minutes of the idol were so excruciating I had to turn it off. Thank you for your service
There was no way I was gonna watch this trainwreck but im eating this video UP! Thank you for your service queen
These videos are a gift to society! you are doing god's honest work taking the bullet for all of us!
You have incredible insights. We will always support you.
thank you bestie!
“ever since finding out the idol is probably just the weeknd’s selena gomez fanfic i haven’t been able to sleep”
YES BESTIE I am coming into this knowing nothing at all about the idol except that ppl are talking about it but I’m so excited to be educated !!

I want Carley’s jumper. It’s so cute!!
Blessed to live in the era where Carley volunteers as tribute
I was waiting for this! Brave moves, very brave 😂❤ This is the only way I'd watch this, so thank you for your sacrifice.
omg thank you!!
4:54 I’m so glad someone else hasn’t moved on from the PLL finale. Ello SistAh haunts my dreams
thank u for actually thinking ab things logically while also criticizing it bc som epeople r just critizing it to critisize it
you know we're in the bad place cus if we weren't, we would've gotten the original version of what this show was supposed to be, viewed through a woman's lens and perspective.
Truly doing the lords work 🙌🏻 I’m so curious about the discourse but DID NOT want to give them the views.
This show is bad because theyre consistency misogynistic and yet they claim theyre doing it for "satire". This show originally belonged to a woman who wanted to tell the story of trauma from the point of view of a starlette. However the weeknd and SL ruined it and said it was "too much of a female point of view"
I'm fascinated by this show because it could have been an amazing Heathers-level dark comedy, but instead, it's just 365 Days with a half-decent writer.
"If it's not making that comment then we've got a problem because it is in your face" Just really succinct coverage of so many shows and films like this...
my life flashed before my eyes when you brought up the hair brush
