What pisses me off about this show is that Clay was throughout the series always there for everybody, while in the end, where he struggled the most mentally, NOBODY was really there for him. He kept their dirty secrets, protected people who were really nasty to him, showed compassion to everyone, helped people who treated him like shit, everyone was ungrateful to him and all that... But in the end, NOBODY was there for him. And I hate to admit this, but this is probably the most honest and realistic thing about this show, because that's exactly how real life works. You can say what you will about Clay and his motivations, but the way he gets treated in season 4 was unexceptable. He's certainly not a "good" character, but compared to everyone else, he was a saint. It's been a while since I've seen this show, but I will never forget this very particular thing and how pissed off I was.
I feel so sorry for Justin Prentice and Grace Saif for getting hate mail and death threats, just because of the characters they played. It's so heartbreaking.

Yeah it's sadly not uncommon. Actors will even get complaints that they aren't dating in real life (a la the cast of The Vampire Diaries)
They really should have stopped after the first two seasons. It was apparently supposed to a one off limited series, but the unexpected success led for it to become a Riverdale clone. Hannah was no longer even a character, and it had moved so far away from its initial premise.
It was already stretched out, in the book Clay listened to all the tapes in one night.

There was no need to go beyond the 1st season. I only got up to half of season 2 but I applaud everyone who was able to watch beyond that.

I couldn't even get through the first episode because the dialogue was so incredibly forced, unnatural and cringe to me. 😅
The moment with Tyler in the bathroom has messed me up badly over the years and i hate that show makers feel the need to make stuff like this so realistic. Why put these in at all :/ stuff like this makes viewers so desensitized.

Yes! I watched that season my sophomore year in high school and it was SO disturbing. The show overall just put bad thoughts into my head.

i used to really like 13 reasons why, but i stopped watching it after season 2 because it was such a hot mess. after reading the reviews of seasons 3 & 4, i understand why i refused to continue the show.
I think it only went downhill after season 1
i remember seeing hannahs death scene as someone who did try to unalive myself and it was so traumatic to witness. and i watched it BEFORE they went back and added trigger warnings and cut out the very graphic scene of her in the bath tub. i think people who watch it now wont see it bc they edited it out of the show after it aired and got backlash but it shoul have never been in the show in the first place. so much of 13rw did much more harm than good and honestly it felt like they were trying to traumatize the audience instead of inform and be sensitive to the topics they were handling. and that is a problem when ur main audience are starting as young as 13-14
I remember watching it when I was 16 and I’ve never struggled with depression or suicidal thoughts, but some thing that really scares me is suicide and self harm. I’ve never struggled with it but it terrifies me the idea of doing it to myself and I’m grateful I’ve never gotten to that point, but then seeing her do that seeing it detected it scared me so badly like I’ve seen in crime TV shows people who’ve done it or seen it like stage like they did because it’s a crime TV show so like the criminal did it, but those never scare me you don’t see the action you see the aftermath you don’t see the person going through it and going through it is what scares me so it was terrifying to watch. I didn’t even know they cut it out but I’m glad and the fact that they didn’t put a trigger warning is crazy.
Suicide isn’t pretty. It’s a powerful anti-suicide message. Just because it wasn’t for you doesn’t mean it didn’t service its purpose.
@@sungexpression9093 i think you may have misunderstood my comment. i am saying as someone who has tried to commit multiple times and suffered from self harm that those scenes almost made me relapse. they were horrible to watch and went against everything that professionals told them not to do. they were informed many times how seeing those scenes were not helpful. at this point now they have edited out her very graphic death scene but when i watched it there were no trigger warnings and they showed exactly how she does it. suicide is NOT pretty and i am very aware than not every show out out there is " for me" but when thousands of people are pointing out the very valid point that 13rw did more harm than good i think its worth talking about. it had its moments of being good but ultimately the shows priorities were shocking the audience & creating more drama. they did not really care about ppl w mental health isues and it fully shows sadly. i think other shows deal with depression and suicide a lot better than 13rw. i will never say people arent allowed to enjoy this show or invalidate someone if it helped them but i also think we need to talk about the harm that the decisions to show very graphic self harm & SA scenes had on thousands of young people( especially when that the demographic they are aiming for and that are watching it). i was 15 struggling with my mental health and watching this show made me feel worse when i thought it would make me feel scene. and many other people feel the same. we can criticize it without that meaning im invalidating anyone elses experience.

One of my least favorite thing in shows is when it feels like they start going through a checklist of social issues they need to address. I feel like this happened in the fosters too where it’s like
Mental health? Check
Suicide? Check
Self harm? Check
School shooting? Check
LGBTQ? Check
Racism? Check
SA? Check
And to be clear those are important things and shows and movies can do a great service to those topics. But it’s very clear when something is a theme because they care about what they have to say, or when it’s there just to check a box, and that’s when it becomes an active disservice
I saw this show at 13 years old…I saw that scene and it traumatized me. I still remember it vividly. Terrible.
I can second that The show (to my young eyes) showed suicide as an option to get revenge on everyone who’d ever wronged you. I remember for awhile having this mindset, and it was not healthy.
I remember when the show came out some of my friends were like oh this is groundbreaking and others hated it so I read the book because it would take less time than watching the show lol and iirc the book is a lot better, or at least Less Bad. It takes place over one night instead of stretching the whole thing out for days or possibly weeks, Clay just sits in the park or something with his thoughts, at one point I think he sees one of the others he'd already heard about in the tapes and they share this Look of "this is messed up" and walk their separate ways, and very often during the tapes Hannah breaks down, her voice is shaky, she's crying, she's clearly going off-script so to speak, Clay tells us Hannah took pills, and the whole thing piles up to paint the tapes as one final cry for help instead of this evil mastermind revenge tactic. It's not the best book I've ever read, not even close, but it did offer something that I think fundamentally couldn't work in a TV show
This whole show was embarrassingly mishandled. Its very premise with the tapes was flawed, made a cartoon character out of the most important element of the plot, and took itself so seriously and for why? They really thought they were cooking with this show and the stove was off the whole time.
This show was one of the most controversial shows ever made when it aired on Netflix! Man, was it insane! It felt like they tried to frame the show as the next Degrassi or Boy Meets World or even Riverdale, where those shows tackle issues of teen mental health and stuff like that, though those shows handled that subject way better than this show did! I get the critizism, but this show is very special to me, Jessicas story arc was so in dept and well-written and I´ve never seen any show that spent so much time on the trauma SA causes. I really liked the way Jessica changed and began healing and channeling her hurt into activism
Yes completely agree. Whenever a show does touch on SA it's always the direct aftermath, never the long-lasting consequences. I think that's why the show was so meaningful to me too. I felt understood and validated for once. Hugs❤

I only watched the first season and did not really like the show, although I did like the book it was based on. I feel like it was clearer in the book that when Hannah got in the hot tub with Bryce she was already in a self destructive spiral and put herself at risk knowingly because she didn’t really value her own safety at that point. Not saying this was a good decision, and I agree that the show should have a better job showing her mindset when she put herself in that risky situation.

I really liked season one and two, and I liked season three, but I stopped watching season two after like 20 minutes! The first season came out when I was in middle school, and I didn’t think it glorified anything. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t going through anything serious, but it just felt like an introduction to these serious topics.
BUT! It still didn’t portray these things in the best way. Which wouldn’t be a problem if the show wasn’t trying to be totally realistic.
But regardless of how it conducted these series topics, I still think it’s an entertaining show. And it had a lot of potential

The show 100% has it's issues but I have to give it credit as Jessica's, Tyler's and Chloe's storylines really resonated with me and made me feel seen at a time where I was too ashamed to tell anyone. They definitely mishandled aspects, but I felt understood and validated in a way I never had before in real life or in media. Definitely triggering and not for everyone, but for me it was almost a cathartic type of triggering if that makes sense. Before the show I had really internalized it and blamed myself, never even acknowledging it was assault because I saw it as me putting myself in a bad situation, or being a s*** for not fighting them (I was almost unconcious). The way the characters treating Bryce and Monty like monsters and rallied behind Jessica, Chloe, and Tyler made me realize what happened to me wasn't my fault, it was their fault. They could have chose not take advantage of a situation. This show is the only reason I ever opened up to my boyfriend and my friends about this.
Yeah, effective therapy in media would just fix the conflict right away and there would be no story. For example, there's this obscure flop film called "Good Will Hunting" where there's indeed no story; a guy just goes to therapy, it works and the movie ends! Boring, right? That's why it's so short!

I think there’s a lot that isn’t necessarily on Netflix. For example the name of the show. It’s based off a book series of the same name. A lot of the plot points (especially in season one) are directly from the books as well.
That being said, I hate this storyline and the show and feel that it made a mockery of series issues like mental health and SA.
But they were the one in power of choosing what to include from the book and how to portray it
@@trinesrensen6821 I get that, which is why I included my last statement. But some of the plot points, like how she was in the hot tub, was in the book. So saying that her staying in the hot tub makes no sense, well that was in the book just like that.
I have never read the book but watched the first three seasons even though i enjoyed the first two seasons it definitely had big problems season 3 i absolutely hated it im glad i decided not to watch season 4 the series lasted too long to me the writer's really dropped the ball on mental health and mental illness
One thing I never understood about her tapes was I think her name is Shelby the black girl all she did was hit a stop sign and knock it over and not call the cops that has no effect on Hannah you were just in the car and if you want to call the cops Shelby is not stopping you sure she doesn’t want to But you can do it and I don’t know if it’s because that other guy ended up dying in a car accident maybe that was the reason but that’s not just Shelby’s fault you could’ve called the cops about the stop sign sooner and then they might’ve been able to set up a roadblock so that boy wouldn’t have gotten hit and he waited a substantial amount of time before calling the police and by the time the boy had already been killed and I know that’s gonna affect her but I don’t see how that affects her self-esteem and makes her more depressed unless she’s putting the blame on herself when the stop sign itself isn’t but calling the cops is a little bit on her, but like Serena said putting that in the same category as my Braisted, it just doesn’t make sense I don’t even see it that reason never made sense to me. As a reason they didn’t explain that at all the other ones I understood it’s hurting your self-esteem hurting you. Mentally you think Zack threw away your letter Alex humiliated you Jessica, or whatever her name was left you as a friend because of that that one girl kissed you the other guy took a picture of it Justin humiliated you just didn’t let that thing happen to Jessica and Bryce also did that to Jessica a lot of that made sense except for the one with Clay like I get what’s going on in her mind but that’s not his fault so that’s a reason but that’s not Claire being the reason that’s your own mental health. Clay didn’t directly do anything which is why I was confused as to why that was a reason just like Clay I know you didn’t do anything but this is what happens but even the guy Tony I think was like yeah it’s your fault and it’s like no it’s her mental health brace did the most damage by the way and I don’t think she’ll be should be on that list either I know yeah it’s Hannah’s mind not mine and I can’t comprehend what’s going on with her, but still make it make more sense as to why these reasons are reasons because some don’t make sense

I sort of understand what they were going for, what they were trying to do. But it missed the mark imo. The problem with trying to portray mental illness in shows or movies is, it’s never black and white, it’s impossible to show every single possible angle, it’s impossible to fully flesh out and accurately portray the deep issues because every person experiences things differently, every experience and every situation is different. There’s always going to be someone out there who disagrees with the portrayal and the message because everyone automatically applies the messages to their own life and own experiences and if it doesn’t match up it makes it harder to relate, if that makes sense.
As I said I never actually finished the show, I may have to revisit it at some point.

I remember being not able to binch watch it because it made me go into a very bad place mentally . I feel like it began from a good place but became more of a very dramatic high school show. But the fact that no one in the school was trained to deal with it was realistic. At the time of watching it I didn't realize how harmfull the show can be. I hated how the show made hannah so hated by a lot of the characters. I do think that we need shows that talk about mental healht . But how can it be done in a realistic way that doesn't harm the mental health of it's watchers ? The cast did talk about the things that happened in the show after season 2 in a special. So I feel like not everything was about trying to make a popular dramatic show. I might be wrong. But the acters seemed to really care . This is just my impression.
Saying that I do agree that it is a show that is hard to watch and maybe is better to stay away from if you are already struggling with your mental healt or have a history of struggling with mental health.
i am doing a rewatch , and since i am no longer in high school , it is so different for me right now . i actually really enjoy it . i might be in the minority but i think it was done well , and that it is really good how they did it how they did and showed it through the lens of a teenage perspective , and not make them seem more intelligent than they are .
Which guy not liking her back being one of the reasons are you referring to? I only remember Justin (sending the photo of her), Bryce (assault), Marcus (also assault), and Zach (stealing her compliments when she was in a bad headspace and needed them).
of course, monetizing mental illness is a problem, but as long as someone knows that these are more or less entertaining tv shows, there is no problem. the problem is when people believe that this is a realistic portrait of mental illness, that popular dramas are very deep artistic or realistic pieces, etc. dr. house is not a realistic physician, breaking bad is high level entertainment not more, etc.
imo they shouldn't have removed the unaliving scene at the end of season 1 because that scene personally prevented me from doing anything like that and it without that scene it's less powerful

Yeah, I shouldn't have watched the show, but I though the cast was so charismatic and the show was so well filmed, it have a great narrative, but it cost me didn't listen to the triggers, but I blame Netflix for not putting the triggers in the first episode, because after people are invested in the show the trigger will not be respected. I actually would love to know if anyone drop the show in the middle of the season because the trigger.
But even so for me the show was wrong by existing, as I said the production and cast had so many merits, but the fact they made mote than one season is even more absurd. The build they did in the end of first season to a domino effect is just bad and took away the little credit the show could have, because they stop show something that could have being an attempt of cautionary tale, but by keeping going with the same stories would be just melodramatic senseless teen edgy porn.
I hate this show, Netflix keep going with it just show they fl*p of the finger for concerns, and also show the dangerous power of the streamings operating with almost no regulations, as so many things on internet. Those guys can go further in they greed. cancelling good shows, keeping the bads that give them teen money.
Even as someone who liked the first two seasons (I acknowledge the flaws of the show I simply found it entertaining I saw it as like a CW show basically) my biggest problem isn't even the moral implications of the show. I just think after a certain point it was badly written watching season 3 felt like a chore. It wasn't even entertaining and every plot I'd hope they would resolve about season 2 felt unanswered. It just felt so lazily written and had the most basic writing mistakes a sixth grader could catch.

I feel like the book was worse by almost making it bigger and like a plot point for a narrative. I just feel like writing things like this in a fictitious way is always going to be teetering on dangerous.
You don't root for anyone and you just feel bad for Clay. It does still romantize it.

I know you’re doing other shows but I really don’t like you and your channel of shows specially this this show is a very heavy topic. I tweet kids go through every single day, so this is a good show for a while kids a lot of teenagers and grown-ups to watch sometimes it will help a lot of kids, which is teenagers, but you need to stop doing this because you with your shows every viewing or just making other people don’t wanna watch it😢❤

She is allowed to make videos on her opinion everyone is entitled to their own opinion there are plenty of other things for you to watch instead of leaving a negative comment just find some other videos to watch
