Some of the closeup shots of the bugs were done with real life models and animatronics. Jurassic Park also used a combination of CGI + real models/animatronics (IIRC, they made animatronic models of Velociraptors and most of the T-Rex).
They played to the strengths of early CGI. Movies around that time with bad CGI didn’t, making common mistakes like using it in dimly lit scenes and having glossy reflections.

There is also the possibility that the femoral arties pulled back too far to tournequit or possibly even clamp since the amputations occurred very close to the waist.

There was just so many bugs. The warrior bugs were even using dead bugs as ladders and stepping stones. They didn't have enough firepower and the right kind of firepower.

I love this movie. I wished they showed more of the underslung shotgun being used. It would be cool if they made another film going back to klendathu and stopping the bugs once and for all.
I know there are (less than stellar) sequels but I think the point of this movie is they were absolutely going to lose this war eventually, I don't think there was any once and for all in their future.
As a retired member of the military, you feel a scene like this. We take comraderie very seriously, and to see a friend? Or even a fellow member pass away like that? It hits home in a way you can never forget.
They have energy weapons in the extended lore but they were expensive and not as reliable as the Morita Smart Rifles. Keep in mind in the books and other media the troopers are supposed to have visors to assist in targeting but they were dumped for the movies because the actor' s breathing kept on fogging them up the screen.
Problem is there was just WAY too many bugs, and just like in the movie they were easily overwhelmed. Only thing that would stop and onslaught like that would be heavy ordnance.
Off the charts action, suspense, and adventure, without a single cute quip or inside joke to ruin the tension. What actual action film making once was.
What i like in the scene of the insects waves invading the valley is that it's a perfect mimic of the troopers going out of their transports and invading the valley against the insect. They aren't really different from each other. Waves and waves of disposable and nearly suicidable canon fodders.
Respect to the two soldiers who stayed on the tower until the very end to ensure everyone else could get on board the ship…….

Also why the first Star Wars movies aged so well. A mix of animatronics with cgi only for wide shots or space shots. Lots of miniatures too!

This is because Disney puts an orange/blue/purple filter over literally everything in the name of being family friendly or something.
The special effects still holds up, but the directing and pacing is way ahead of modern movies, which is why these scenes are still amazing to watch

This movie needs a proper sequel, prequel or remake.
2 sequels, 1 bad, 1 passable but not as good as the first. And a remake? Not with modern Hollywood, no way.
There are 4 sequels. They are all pretty schlocky, but definitely fun. If you haven't seen then I'd recommend watching them.
My takeaway from this comment is 'proper'. You will not get that in current Hollywood... saying that, you are not wrong.
