I always loved that Zim got his moment in this scene. As earlier in the movie, when he demanded to be sent to the frontlines, he was told "The only way you're gonna see any combat, is if you bump yourself down to Private!" so that is exactly what he did!
Many critics say that Carmen was badly played, but this was the perfect choice. She never reacts emotionally to anything because she's practically a psychopath. She totally adheres to the "violence is power" vision of the Federation and only sees her own interests. In this ending scene, she looks very happy and composed... for a woman who 10 minutes ago saw her boyfriend get his brains sucked out his head by a giant bug. A boyfriend who even sacrificed his last weapon to give her a better chance of survival... and she's "oh cool, now everything is fine guys".
She never liked Zander like that, a common misconception among those who have seen the movie. Zander only wanted to fuck her, and she did but only when she thought Johnny was dead. When she found out he was alive their little fling was over. In the original ending Carmen and Johnny got back together..soo
Not forgetting that also has that huge gaping wound on her upper torso, that doesn't seem to be bothering her in the least ! Any normal person would have probably passed out from shock and blood loss at the very least !

I love how many people die just to save Carmen, who is clearly portraied as being selfish and manipulative, while Rico, of course, can't understand a ounce of what is happening around him.

I don't think you get "the joke." Starship Troopers isn't just a movie ABOUT a fascistic society, it is a movie FOR a fascistic society. It is the movie "Rico" or "Carmen" would see in their own theaters on Friday night.
One detail I noticed rewatching the ending is that Zim (the one who captured the Brain Bug) was NOT the one celebrated and declared a war hero, but instead Rico and co. for the sole reason that they look good on camera, even though they were NEVER responsible for the capture of the bug. Another detail to indicate the nature of propaganda in the movie. Watching this with an adult lens was mind blowing
@@sinisdead This. They were blindly wandering through the tunnels looking for the brain, when Rico's group radioed an exact location, and direction it was moving in. That kind of information is VITAL in any sort of operation.
I do not understand how the hell the VFX of this movie helds up this well. I know they used practical effects as well, but even most of the CGI is still pretty amazing.
So actually a lot of the bugs and effects were really models, but they were animated with such skill and fluidity they look like cg. It holds up well bc they were real objects animated by some of the best stop motion animators to work in the industry. The mix of that and at the time state of the art cg are how the effects stay so good even now
The girl (Carmen) was stabbed THROUGH the left upper chest but came out walking unscathed covered with alien mucus and human blood seeping from the chest. She was still able to say things might work out. I guest she does not have a lung (pneumothorax) or chest wall (broken bones). Or she must have an incredible blood clotting system with great regenerative healing powers that close the wound.
It's a pie-plate sized hole through her upper chest. She did cry out a bit when she was heaved in front of the boss bug, so I guess it was painful for a little bit.

Still it takes a whole lotta suspension of disbelief to see the human chest cavity through-and-throughed one second and then the same person is fighting aliens with automatic weapons and sprinting for their lives with no apparent ill effects.

I heard (don't remember where) that the bug's mucus/goo had anesthetic qualities, blood clotting and healing properties, which I assume allowed them to continue attacking regardless of catastrophic hits and damage. She had a bunch in her puncture wound. Don't remember if a fan just said it, or it was canon somewhere. :D
Remembering more than 20 years ago, when I was a kid with no CD player, no computer, no cable tv... and this is the first time I see such an action movies like this...
God the fact that everyone cheers when they receal the bug is afraid is such good story telling. The fact the bug has emotions that can be read by psykers means that they could communicate and negotiate with the bugs, but instead of being happy for the chace for peace they are cheering for makeing the bug scared at all

Having personally witnessed large explosions via the Army I can tell you that the blast wave travels VERY fast and knocks the wind out of you in mere seconds. It’s intense and pretty awesome to see. Even from a distance where one can see the blast wave they travel insanely fast. Gotta love movies.
don't forget the flash fire. All the soft tissue in their bodies (lungs, eyes, etc.) would be vaporized, and they would slowly suffocate to death while in extreme agony.
I was thinking the same thing as they were running out the tunnel. When that nuke went off, they would have been vaporized about 2 seconds after detonation.
Movies would be boring as fuck if they were realistic...... I mean hell there wouldn't be a space fleet or giant bugs to fight or anything. Name a realistic movie that was good only close one is Saving Private Ryan and I mean.... that had some serious flaws the bullets under water, the mg bunkers they didn't actually have on Omaha.....flame throwers blowing up, shooting the sniper through the scope.... got the sign/countersign backwards, the "Hemmbalken" were backwards... etc etc. Just got to suspend belief when you watch movies....
I hate the Carmen character in this movie. She is a player and cheats on her boyfriend and then gets to live at the end all happy like she did nothing wrong. I guess that is real life though
That's part of the movie. The director specifically made it a point to make the characters somewhat or totally unlikeable. They are supposed to be "propaganda pieces" so their actions don't matter. They are attractive faces the federation uses to recruit. It's a masterwork in cinema imo

No one really could see the satire in the film - they just thought it was another silly brainless sci-fi "Let's shoot the bugs movie". The critics absolutely hated the movie, partly because the Heinlein novel was a huge pillar of sci-fi and they seemed to feel it was ignoring what was great about the novel. (For instance his description of the training sequences is a lot more realistic than the cartoon approach in the movie.) It also didn't help that Paul Verhoven directed. Aside from one or two movies, he was not considered a very good director. 27 years later, most critics really love the film (some even calling it one of the best sci fi films of all time.) I'm still not a huge fan - (the dialogue and Denise Richards and Casper van Diem's acting aren't that impressive) but I do appreciate it more - and Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown's acting a top notch for this type of film.

You’re right that the appreciation took longer on this one but I think you’re selling it short with the comment on the dialogues and the lead’s acting. The dialogue is intentionally cheesy and the leads intentionally are brainless blocks of attractive wood with no personality or thoughts of their own, the entire film is meant to be a propaganda film that is set in the universe of starship troopers. The dialogue is cheesy and the action is unrealistic by design, it’s meant to be inspirational to the next generation of meat to be thrown through the grinder that is the military of the film. I won’t say Van Deen and Richards were intentionally acting poorly, but they were chosen by Verhoeven anyway. they have the vacant look in their eyes that is to be representative of the types of people that this fascist society is churning out, and them being mediocre actors is perfectly acceptable in the world of a propaganda film that is just meant to get more people to join the military. It’s not bad writing by verhoeven or that he chose bad actors on accident, he wrote the dialogue to be campy and predictable on purpose and intentionally chose actors that would best represent the satirical vision he was going for.

Funny how by the end their rifles seem to have become marginally stronger. 4 of them held off that much bugs while in the beginning a group of them could barely dent the armor of even one.

Loved the little wink Zim gave Rico at the end. Seeing they're both still alive and the mutual respect. How they are both playing their roles (knowing Zim is an absolute badass but has to play the part of a simple private yet salute Johnny...lol). A good moment there.

There's just something so special about the way Ace shouts "Yeeeeah!" while firing his gun, like the cosmic hillbilly that he is. Somehow it feels very true to life.
Paul's movies were always about satire and corporate fascism, but the endings were always happy in some way and filled with resolve. Robocop's classic ending and Starship proves it, that even for their grim future there is still some light in the tunnel.
I really don’t see anything hopeful about this ending. The characters are all successfully indoctrinated into the generational cycle of military fanaticism, and become soulless perpetrators of violence who will now do the same to the next generation.

@@cybergothika6906 Nah man that's the opposite of the point of the film. Art Lover Ivy's right. The ending is hilariously abject. Rico who started off doubtful that violence could resolve all conflicts is seen here yelling angrily, "C'mon you apes you wanna live forever?" He hates life and only wants to kill. The tone is intentionally upbeat and lively while nothing has improved at all. They ARE the existential threat; the young generation that came up hopeful and bright-eyed became the new generation of fascists, as may the next. The tonal contrast shows the absurdity which is the satire of it. That's what makes it good don't ya see?
Supposedly Denise Richards filmed this scene on only her second day of filming and didn't have any idea why she was bleeding or the extent of her injuries. I think Verhoven liked that approach as the movie is a satire, including past movies where soldiers would get seriously hit and then act like it was nothing.
I never get enough of how this movie purposefully dehumanizes the enemy, glorifies human militairism, even when they purposefully manipulate media to mobilize the population into an aggressive war that is depicted as a heroic self defense. Even the soldiers are treated as expendables, and bravery is rewarded over any other quality with the soldiers being put in extremely dangerous situations with very limited training.
In no media were the Arachnids/Pseudo-Arachnids ever depicted as a "peaceful" entity. The only thing "correct" about the Feds was that they WERE waging a defensive war. Yes, the propaganda used was a satirical poke at real world fascism as well as blind and rampant nationalism. However, in universe it was justified strategically between how fast the Bugs could reproduce as well as them being hell bent on wiping out humanity just because we were in their way.
@@smokingcrab2290 the point is that they weren't hellbent on destroying humanity. the goal of the federation was simply to conquer more planets for more resources, like the original commentor said, "an aggressive war that is depicted as heroic self defense." there is even evidence to suggest that the federation bombed buenos aires with the asteroid, not the bugs. "it's afraid," remember? the bugs were the ones afraid the whole time. I mean picture it from their perspective; one day a massive fleet shows up in orbit of your homeworld, and small creatures with guns show up and start killing. their tactics are primitive and rarely change throughout the movie, which leads to one of the main themes of the movie: if the situation were flipped, it would be a heroic story of humanity's struggle against all odds.
Carmen: "Tis but a scratch! Just a flesh wound!" (There was a serious missed opportunity here to have her actually say one of those lines in the movie)

It's the one that has a humongous eye at the center of bug planet, isn't it? They had to deploy an antimatter bomb- a planet killer to destroy it, right? This movie is actually a smart tragedy. It's smart because on it's surface it seems dumb, but underneath it is really a warning / satire on a decaying society dripping with propaganda, unrelenting violence and political oppression. The trumped up music belies the victory, as you realise the final sequence is an exact duplicate of the sequence at the beginning of the movie, but with the younger generation replacing the old who had died. It is a tragedy, because in the end with all their superior technology, mental ability and human potential, the characters are trapped in their thinking and short sighted in their will. A masterful film, if not a very pertinent depressing one.
@@garnorix The director, Verhoeven, said he couldn't finish more than a dozen or so pages of the book. He kind of got a Cliff's Notes version of the main points from somebody on his staff, then abandoned most of them and directed the screenplay and the shooting as he saw fit, as an anti-militarist cautionary tale. This flick is thus, at best, "inspired by" Heinlein's overlong, borderline-fascist tome, but not in the way RH fans would have hoped for! As it was, the 1997 American audience mostly took it for simple action-adventure, with no accompanying satirical messages. So, Verhoeven's vision for the film was subverted in the end -- just as he had subverted Heinlein's vision for the book.

Carmen holds/fires the heavy recoiling machine gun without even wincing after getting stabbed through her shoulder. It is as if she was never injured to begin with.
I know this is a story about how WE are actually the bad guy, and I agree. But I really love this fu€king movie! Especially that score. This movie was ahead of it’s time. In the verhoven trilogy this is my absolute FAVORITE.
@@tomg3797 It’s heavily implied that the bugs had nothing to do with the asteroid. It was most likely something the government invented to justify attacking them. The movie is meant to satirize fascist propaganda and teach you to see through how these kinds of governments lie to you to get you to hate other races, countries, cultures, etc.

Also you can tell a mile away that the news are just propaganda and lies, so I wouldn't be surprised if some corupt politicians who made a fortune from military military hardware and mining of resources found on bug planets were responsible for what happened in Buenos Aires.
The best explanation is that Denise Richards filmed this scene on only her second day on the movie, was never told how she got injured or how serious it was, so she had no idea. Also, the director considered the movie a satire, including of movies where soldier would get seriously hit but in the next scene act like they weren't injured.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy how much this movie seems like a critique of the Iraq war, despite coming out years before the invasion of Iraq. It's almost like Paul Verhoeven was onto something.
For all those of us who were or are in the military, let’s all take the time to appreciate that Ace, in spite of deserting from the original mission (sorta), had the good sense to get on the comms, and, in spite of seeing a brand new bug and being deep in territory, report their position. Solid tactics, Ace!
Man this movie deserves a good open world gameplay or better yet open planet gameplay. Just having a blast online with hundreds of players around the world at a time against hordes/waves of these bugs.

great film, a classic. so many elements in design. Admittedly arcade like. One of the clever things is that you know its a fascist state, you know that the bugs were probably defending themselves rather then attacking, but the propaganda gets to you by the end, and you are cheering them on

After this, military movilization (in retaliation) was approved, but since this wasn't enough for a global concern, The Federation sent asteroids into the earth claiming they came from "the bugs", thru this max military founding for defense systems got approved, concern in the population was established and then with all those pre established stakes at their highest, a single asteroid blowing up a South American city was all needed for the population to claim for war and The Federation to have their "glorious war" that would keep them in power for the following decades. For a real life example, the military ditactorship (The Junta) in Argentina in 1982, facing a population slowly willing to fight them back decided that the best solution was to divert the focus of the people into something they hold "dear", thru this The Falklands War started, a military invasion for the sole porpuse of capturing a piece of rock (no matter the loses) so the dictators could keep themselves in power for 10 more years. Gladly they lost the war and right after this the goverment wich ended with the restoration of the democracy. Sorry about the wall of text, but insigt is a bitch to be written.
Wasn’t the war started because of the Buenos Aires incident? The asteroid that hit them came from Klendathu, deflected by the bugs. So, they drew First Blood. Tbh, I believe the movie is a satire about the military, and that the bugs did in fact made the first move. To me, the satire is about how military (and a militarized society) reacts to events like this. Sometimes doing everything wrong (the drop on Klendathu), sometimes overreacting (going to war without even studying the enemy). To me, the war is a means for the film to mock the bad side of military forces, not a satire about the politics that leads to wars, so it almost doesn’t matter (plot wise) who started the war for the film to work. Just my opinion.

If you go with a fascist reading, you can read it as the military and society becoming so technologically backwards, so incompetent, and so uninnovative and dull that they haven't even figured out using armored tanks or combined arms operations.
I think the reason people support them despite the negative imagery is because...well, they're fighting evil giant bugs. You'll support anyone fighting that.
A lot of this film was made in and around Scenic SD (that was the rumor, at any rate) --- the Bad Lands. Heinlein was often interesting, and he really knew to write. I think that I've might have read (at least once) everything that he wrote. I particularly liked Friday. A lot of what ended up on Star Trek was stolen from others, including Heinlein.

The war is LOST. If you pay attention to scenes before that, humans are on losing side. They are so short of soldiers that they have to conscript children and promote totally incompetent people (think for a moment, neither Johnny nor Carmen have any commanding skills), they captured just one brain bug and one frontier planet, while bugs have probably some massive fleet and real queens hidden somewhere..

How crazy is it that at first it took hundreds and hundreds of bullets to kill one. And then all of a sudden a group of 4 can lay out an obscene amount of these things.
Advances in technology (since the first failed attempt) and knowing where to hit, as well as a choke that's tightening with every bug they kill. By the end of the film, it looks like they're working with laser or plasma rifles or something.
While I enjoyed the movie, the book was better by a mile. I really wish they would have stuck closer to the source material, instead of turning the Federation into space Nazis. Of course, we had 4 movies when I was a kid working at scout camp. Starship Troopers, Waterworld, Blues Brothers, and Red Dawn. Starship Troopers usually won, because, let's be honest, 15-17 year old males wanna see tits.🤷♂️

Some of the best action and character development [Rico maturing, and learning to carry the weight of leadership.] Some things could have been done better, but really the movie is like crack..I can watch it on a loop and never get tired of it. I always loved that Zim got his moment in this scene. As earlier in the movie, when he demanded to be sent to the frontlines, he was told "The only way you're gonna see any combat, is if you bump yourself down to Private!" so that is exactly what he did!

Many critics say that Carmen was badly played, but this was the perfect choice. She never reacts emotionally to anything because she's practically a psychopath. She totally adheres to the "violence is power" vision of the Federation and only sees her own interests.
In this ending scene, she looks very happy and composed... for a woman who 10 minutes ago saw her boyfriend get his brains sucked out his head by a giant bug. A boyfriend who even sacrificed his last weapon to give her a better chance of survival... and she's "oh cool, now everything is fine guys".

I don't think you get "the joke." Starship Troopers isn't just a movie ABOUT a fascistic society, it is a movie FOR a fascistic society. It is the movie "Rico" or "Carmen" would see in their own theaters on Friday night.
One detail I noticed rewatching the ending is that Zim (the one who captured the Brain Bug) was NOT the one celebrated and declared a war hero, but instead Rico and co. for the sole reason that they look good on camera, even though they were NEVER responsible for the capture of the bug. Another detail to indicate the nature of propaganda in the movie. Watching this with an adult lens was mind blowing

I do not understand how the hell the VFX of this movie helds up this well. I know they used practical effects as well, but even most of the CGI is still pretty amazing.
The scenes in space with their CG spacecraft looks really good
The reason is simple: Back then, they cared.
So actually a lot of the bugs and effects were really models, but they were animated with such skill and fluidity they look like cg. It holds up well bc they were real objects animated by some of the best stop motion animators to work in the industry. The mix of that and at the time state of the art cg are how the effects stay so good even now

The girl (Carmen) was stabbed THROUGH the left upper chest but came out walking unscathed covered with alien mucus and human blood seeping from the chest. She was still able to say things might work out. I guest she does not have a lung (pneumothorax) or chest wall (broken bones). Or she must have an incredible blood clotting system with great regenerative healing powers that close the wound.
It's a pie-plate sized hole through her upper chest. She did cry out a bit when she was heaved in front of the boss bug, so I guess it was painful for a little bit.

God the fact that everyone cheers when they receal the bug is afraid is such good story telling. The fact the bug has emotions that can be read by psykers means that they could communicate and negotiate with the bugs, but instead of being happy for the chace for peace they are cheering for makeing the bug scared at all

Having personally witnessed large explosions via the Army I can tell you that the blast wave travels VERY fast and knocks the wind out of you in mere seconds. It’s intense and pretty awesome to see. Even from a distance where one can see the blast wave they travel insanely fast. Gotta love movies.

Name a realistic movie that was good only close one is Saving Private Ryan and I mean.... that had some serious flaws the bullets under water, the mg bunkers they didn't actually have on Omaha.....flame throwers blowing up, shooting the sniper through the scope.... got the sign/countersign backwards, the "Hemmbalken" were backwards... etc etc. Just got to suspend belief when you watch movies....
I hate the Carmen character in this movie. She is a player and cheats on her boyfriend and then gets to live at the end all happy like she did nothing wrong. I guess that is real life though

That's part of the movie. The director specifically made it a point to make the characters somewhat or totally unlikeable. They are supposed to be "propaganda pieces" so their actions don't matter. They are attractive faces the federation uses to recruit. It's a masterwork in cinema imo

No one really could see the satire in the film - they just thought it was another silly brainless sci-fi "Let's shoot the bugs movie". The critics absolutely hated the movie, partly because the Heinlein novel was a huge pillar of sci-fi and they seemed to feel it was ignoring what was great about the novel. (For instance his description of the training sequences is a lot more realistic than the cartoon approach in the movie.) It also didn't help that Paul Verhoven directed. Aside from one or two movies, he was not considered a very good director. 27 years later, most critics really love the film (some even calling it one of the best sci fi films of all time.) I'm still not a huge fan - (the dialogue and Denise Richards and Casper van Diem's acting aren't that impressive) but I do appreciate it more - and Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown's acting a top notch for this type of film.
@@jamesrawlins735all 3 of Verhoevens sci fi movies are absolutely beloved, robocop, total recall, and this one. You’re right that the appreciation took longer on this one but I think you’re selling it short with the comment on the dialogues and the lead’s acting.
The dialogue is intentionally cheesy and the leads intentionally are brainless blocks of attractive wood with no personality or thoughts of their own, the entire film is meant to be a propaganda film that is set in the universe of starship troopers. The dialogue is cheesy and the action is unrealistic by design, it’s meant to be inspirational to the next generation of meat to be thrown through the grinder that is the military of the film.
I won’t say Van Deen and Richards were intentionally acting poorly, but they were chosen by Verhoeven anyway. they have the vacant look in their eyes that is to be representative of the types of people that this fascist society is churning out, and them being mediocre actors is perfectly acceptable in the world of a propaganda film that is just meant to get more people to join the military.
It’s not bad writing by verhoeven or that he chose bad actors on accident, he wrote the dialogue to be campy and predictable on purpose and intentionally chose actors that would best represent the satirical vision he was going for.

Funny how by the end their rifles seem to have become marginally stronger. 4 of them held off that much bugs while in the beginning a group of them could barely dent the armor of even one.

Paul's movies were always about satire and corporate fascism, but the endings were always happy in some way and filled with resolve. Robocop's classic ending and Starship proves it, that even for their grim future there is still some light in the tunnel.

I really don’t see anything hopeful about this ending. The characters are all successfully indoctrinated into the generational cycle of military fanaticism, and become soulless perpetrators of violence who will now do the same to the next generation.

The tone is intentionally upbeat and lively while nothing has improved at all. They ARE the existential threat; the young generation that came up hopeful and bright-eyed became the new generation of fascists, as may the next. The tonal contrast shows the absurdity which is the satire of it. That's what makes it good don't ya see?

Supposedly Denise Richards filmed this scene on only her second day of filming and didn't have any idea why she was bleeding or the extent of her injuries. I think Verhoven liked that approach as the movie is a satire, including past movies where soldiers would get seriously hit and then act like it was nothing.

I never get enough of how this movie purposefully dehumanizes the enemy, glorifies human militairism, even when they purposefully manipulate media to mobilize the population into an aggressive war that is depicted as a heroic self defense. Even the soldiers are treated as expendables, and bravery is rewarded over any other quality with the soldiers being put in extremely dangerous situations with very limited training.

In no media were the Arachnids/Pseudo-Arachnids ever depicted as a "peaceful" entity. The only thing "correct" about the Feds was that they WERE waging a defensive war. Yes, the propaganda used was a satirical poke at real world fascism as well as blind and rampant nationalism. However, in universe it was justified strategically between how fast the Bugs could reproduce as well as them being hell bent on wiping out humanity just because we were in their way.

"it's afraid," remember? the bugs were the ones afraid the whole time. I mean picture it from their perspective; one day a massive fleet shows up in orbit of your homeworld, and small creatures with guns show up and start killing. their tactics are primitive and rarely change throughout the movie, which leads to one of the main themes of the movie: if the situation were flipped, it would be a heroic story of humanity's struggle against all odds.

This movie is actually a smart tragedy. It's smart because on it's surface it seems dumb, but underneath it is really a warning / satire on a decaying society dripping with propaganda, unrelenting violence and political oppression. The trumped up music belies the victory, as you realise the final sequence is an exact duplicate of the sequence at the beginning of the movie, but with the younger generation replacing the old who had died. It is a tragedy, because in the end with all their superior technology, mental ability and human potential, the characters are trapped in their thinking and short sighted in their will. A masterful film, if not a very pertinent depressing one.

@@garnorix The director, Verhoeven, said he couldn't finish more than a dozen or so pages of the book. He kind of got a Cliff's Notes version of the main points from somebody on his staff, then abandoned most of them and directed the screenplay and the shooting as he saw fit, as an anti-militarist cautionary tale. This flick is thus, at best, "inspired by" Heinlein's overlong, borderline-fascist tome, but not in the way RH fans would have hoped for! As it was, the 1997 American audience mostly took it for simple action-adventure, with no accompanying satirical messages. So, Verhoeven's vision for the film was subverted in the end -- just as he had subverted Heinlein's vision for the book.

The best explanation is that Denise Richards filmed this scene on only her second day on the movie, was never told how she got injured or how serious it was, so she had no idea. Also, the director considered the movie a satire, including of movies where soldier would get seriously hit but in the next scene act like they weren't injured.

Solid tactics, Ace!
Man this movie deserves a good open world gameplay or better yet open planet gameplay. Just having a blast online with hundreds of players around the world at a time against hordes/waves of these bugs.

great film, a classic. so many elements in design. Admittedly arcade like. One of the clever things is that you know its a fascist state, you know that the bugs were probably defending themselves rather then attacking, but the propaganda gets to you by the end, and you are cheering them on

The Federation needed an excuse to maintain it's militaristic indocrination of Citizenship thru Service, once they found the bugs and how dangerous they were, an religious expedition was sent into one of their planets for the sole porpuse of them been obliterated. After this, military movilization (in retaliation) was approved, but since this wasn't enough for a global concern, The Federation sent asteroids into the earth claiming they came from "the bugs", thru this max military founding for defense systems got approved, concern in the population was established and then with all those pre established stakes at their highest, a single asteroid blowing up a South American city was all needed for the population to claim for war and The Federation to have their "glorious war" that would keep them in power for the following decades.
For a real life example, the military ditactorship (The Junta) in Argentina in 1982, facing a population slowly willing to fight them back decided that the best solution was to divert the focus of the people into something they hold "dear", thru this The Falklands War started, a military invasion for the sole porpuse of capturing a piece of rock (no matter the loses) so the dictators could keep themselves in power for 10 more years. Gladly they lost the war and right after this the goverment wich ended with the restoration of the democracy.

Wasn’t the war started because of the Buenos Aires incident? The asteroid that hit them came from Klendathu, deflected by the bugs. So, they drew First Blood.
Tbh, I believe the movie is a satire about the military, and that the bugs did in fact made the first move. To me, the satire is about how military (and a militarized society) reacts to events like this. Sometimes doing everything wrong (the drop on Klendathu), sometimes overreacting (going to war without even studying the enemy).
To me, the war is a means for the film to mock the bad side of military forces, not a satire about the politics that leads to wars, so it almost doesn’t matter (plot wise) who started the war for the film to work. Just my opinion.

If you go with a fascist reading, you can read it as the military and society becoming so technologically backwards, so incompetent, and so uninnovative and dull that they haven't even figured out using armored tanks or combined arms operations.

I think the reason people support them despite the negative imagery is because...well, they're fighting evil giant bugs. You'll support anyone fighting that.
A lot of this film was made in and around Scenic SD (that was the rumor, at any rate) --- the Bad Lands. Heinlein was often interesting, and he really knew to write. I think that I've might have read (at least once) everything that he wrote. I particularly liked Friday. A lot of what ended up on Star Trek was stolen from others, including Heinlein.
I've read that Star Trek was based on Heinlein's writings because Roddenberry was a huge fan.

The war is LOST. If you pay attention to scenes before that, humans are on losing side. They are so short of soldiers that they have to conscript children and promote totally incompetent people (think for a moment, neither Johnny nor Carmen have any commanding skills), they captured just one brain bug and one frontier planet, while bugs have probably some massive fleet and real queens hidden somewhere..
With a huge trama at her upper body yet she managed to shoot the way out

Then, a VIOLENT rain STORM BLOWS through the ENTIRE AREA with LIGHTNING SPEED, FALLING from the SKY! In the FARTHEST CORNERS of the EARTH, as in a POURING, not a SPOT LEFT as it WASHES ALL from HEAD to TOE, nothing CAN BE HIDDEN from it nor can any PERSON be hid from it. ☀️
ROUNDS of THUNDER, like FLASHES of LIGHTNING, SHAKE the PEOPLE in FEAR! The thunder rumbled, and the sounds of weeping followed it. Some awake from their slumber, and, terribly afraid, search their souls deeply, and hastily RETURN BEFORE the THRONE.

Some, when they see this sight of the drawing lightning, have an anguish in their hearts that they cannot utter, and their regret is intense. You must carefully examine your own intentions and motives, and put yourself where you should be, put into practice what I say, value your life experiences, do not act diligently on the outside, but grow your living, mature, strong and experienced--and only then will they be in accord with My heart.
ALLOW the MINIONS of SATAN and the EVIL SPIRITS that INTERFERE and DESTROY those I BUILD any OPPORTUNITY to TAKE ADVANTAGE of THINGS--THINGS for their ADVANTAGES. They must be STRIPPED WELL and RESTRAINED; they can ONLY be DEALED with the use of a SHARP SWORD. Those who are the worst should be uprooted immediately to prevent future disturbances. And the church will be made perfect, free from any infirmity, and it will be healthy, full of vigor and strength. FLASHING LIGHTNING is followed by rumbling THUNDERS. You must not slack off, and you must not give up, but do your best to catch up, and you will surely see what My hand is doing, what I intend to achieve, what I will throw away, what My perfecting, what I pull out, what I tear down. FOLLOWING this LIGHT of LIFE, people are looking for a way to live and they cannot help but come to Me, to KNEEL in WORSHIP, and WITH their mouths CALL the NAME of the TRUE GOD who reigns over all, and voice their pleas. But they who RESIST Me, they HARDEN their HEARTS, the THUNDER RELLS in their ears, and no doubt they must be DESTROYED. This is the only final outcome for them. How crazy is it that at first it took hundreds and hundreds of bullets to kill one. And then all of a sudden a group of 4 can lay out an obscene amount of these things.
Advances in technology (since the first failed attempt) and knowing where to hit, as well as a choke that's tightening with every bug they kill.

Such a terrific shame they missed out so much from the original Robert Heinlein book. I think this one's about ready for a remake done properly!
While I enjoyed the movie, the book was better by a mile. I really wish they would have stuck closer to the source material, instead of turning the Federation into space Nazis.
Of course, we had 4 movies when I was a kid working at scout camp. Starship Troopers, Waterworld, Blues Brothers, and Red Dawn.

Some of the best action and character development [Rico maturing, and learning to carry the weight of leadership.] Some things could have been done better, but really the movie is like crack..I can watch it on a loop and never get tired of it. Also very rarely do movies live up to the source material, they are their own canon. Its people like Steve who refuse to believe that..even today.
