The only reason Katniss votes yes is it get Coin to trust her. By voting yes, Coin will allow Katniss to kill Snow and Katniss will take this opportunity to kill Coin. Coin being responsible for Prim’s death AND suggesting another Hunger Games proves to Katniss that Coin is just as evil as Snow. Katniss doesn’t want another Hunger Games, she wants to trick Coin so that she can kill her.

I’m surprised he wasn’t able to pick up on that in the books. They make it clear that Coin will likely kill off Katniss the first chance she gets because she doesn’t trust Katniss to support her rule. Katniss can see everything Snow said about Coin is true the minute Coin suggests the another Games. Katniss knows this is her one shot to kill her sister’s murderer who is setting herself up to be just like Snow was as a leader. She isn’t voting because she actually wants another Games; in fact, she’s voting to prevent that from happening.

I genuinely do not understand how bro doesn’t get Katniss as a character. She’s somebody who loves so wholeheartedly and deeply but has to force herself not to care because it destroys her. She loves Peeta and has loved him for the longest, she never stopped caring about him. She’s actively trying to protect herself by being mean and trying to put distance between them bc she knows that if she doesn’t the fact that the one person who loved her more than anything hates her now will be too heartbreaking to deal with. They’re in the middle of a war and she’s 17 years old at this point. She’s dealing with her emotions in the only way she knows how, ignoring them and being cold. It’s the same thing she did with her mother after her father died and they almost starved to death. She tries to ignore them but she can’t because she’s such a lover at heart. That’s why Peeta no longer being himself, especially after he straight up tells her that it’s the one thing he doesn’t want the Capital to do to him, hurts so much. She’s a realistic depiction of someone with cptsd and a ton of survivors guilt. She even straight up says in the books WHY she married Peeta and not Gale. Peeta represents peace, Gale represents war. Katniss has always been someone who has to fight so her actively choosing to live peacefully is a big deal and the fact that she has kids despite saying earlier that she didn’t want any, shows that she feels safe enough to bring kids into the world. She’s not flip flopping, she’s sad and doesn’t know how to deal with looking at a new Peeta who hates her, her way of dealing with it is being mean to him too but she can’t keep it up bc that’s not how she actually feels and Katniss cannot act for shit. She is actively grieving Peeta while also looking him in his eyes.
Edit: Also they don’t immediately get together. They take their time becoming friends again and then eventually get together. They don’t have kids for like another 10 or so years after the war. I’d agree and say it was Collective Trauma if this wasn’t the case. Katniss doesn’t get to make many choices for herself but in the end she does by choosing peace and choosing Peeta.
Edit edit: I can’t wait until you read and watch Songbirds and Snakes because you are actually really close on Snow’s motivations. He’s a little vindictive in the end but he’s still being truthful in his complement of Coin and his empathy about Prim’s death.

So much of her “hating” Peeta is denial bc she can’t let herself love him when he is still brainwashed to want her dead. It’s both a teenage mindset of avoidance and a wartime mindset of survival. In my opinion, the moments she is earnest with him are the moments she can’t keep strong in what the “smart” move is. I actually think it’s really important to the overall themes that they can’t really nurture a life together until the war is over.

Losing someone so important to her after forming that connection was really devastating, and it makes so much sense that she would shut down and try to lash out to push him away. Losing her dad, effectively 'losing' her mom and having to step into that role to take care of everyone, then finding a real sense of safety in Peeta only for that to be ripped away too, of course she would lash out and 'flip flop.'

I think the most fantastic thing about this entire trilogy, the most amazing scene, is when Haymitch votes with the mocking jay. Not for another hunger games, not yes, but with the mocking jay. Which showed their absolutely amazing bond and trust, he knew she had a plan and he didn't need to know what it was in order to trust her. It's such a parallel for when she is dehydrating in the first book but understands, that he doesn't send her water because she is close to a source, such an amazing dynamic. She was alone. Her mom didnt say goodbye to her. She couldn't be around her best friend anymore because seeing him made her think of the role he played in the death of her sister. She's shipped off the live in the graveyard that was once her home. She comes outside and Peeta is there, like he always is, and he's planting Primrose. The war is over and he's planting Primrose. There was no other option. There was no one else. Peeta saw her when they were 5 years old and decided to love her and he did for all his life he loved her.
I get thinking that she shouldn't have ended up with anyone but i dont think that would have ever been the case. She knew fron the moment Peeta became her ally in the first hunger games that she would never be able to live without him.

To say that Katniss and Peeta’s relationship is just brought on through collective trauma and that Katniss only choses Peeta bc he’s an emotional crutch for her just doesn’t sound right. It really diminishes their relationship. Katniss does love Peeta. That’s why Snow kept Peeta prisoner because he knew torturing him was emotionally torturing Katniss.

Snow also saw himself in Peeta and wanted to brainwash him to be cold and unfeeling like he was. Snow also convinced himself that Lucy never loved him, so how could Katniss love or grow to love Peeta? Snow, being a sociopath, couldn't understand that Katniss over time grew to love Peeta after all they went through. It was Peeta's positivity through adversity she needed to see the world in a better light. A dandelion in the spring represented hope after the snow had melted.

She is the most unreliable narrator but this to me was the most clear. Snow hates the districts, but he does value the Capitol and its citizens. The thing is I get where he's coming from about she doesn't really choose but she does. She chooses Prim. Time and time again. The reason I dislike Gale as a romantic interest is he keeps trying to make her choose. But she chooses Prim and those she loves. She does love Gale. She does love Peeta. But she also loves Haymitch and Effie and the people who are close to her and Gale couldn't understand that. Peeta let her pick the pace once he realized where her heart was truly at.

    A few points.
    1) katniess is never out of love with peta. She is trying to dissociate and convince herself that she is not in love with him because it hurts so much to see what the capital did to him. It’s her worse fear. Remember when finick says he wish peta and Annie were both dead instead of being tortured.
    2) she votes yes so coin won’t be suspicions of her. The moment coin sends peta into battle with them, she knows coin is an enemy. Her asking to host a hunger games is more proof of that and she knows she has to kill her to end the cycle.
    3) Johanna and Katina’s are friends. Johanna respects her and visa versa. Johanna just doesn’t express it well bc she is so traumatized for her whole family being killed

and i dont think you are meant to feel anything big at the end of these series or movies. that's just the 'oh i'm watching a movie for entertainment' idea. i honestly dont think that was the intention when the book was written, considering the messages in it. i dont think she really wanted to write something to give you epic highs of feelings, even at the death of coin. by the end, things just are and katniss is nearly destroyed having gone through it all. i think that is the final message. that exact feeling of going through it with her. the price of all those events.

I said it once and I will say it again. Gale was the worst. Out of my female perspective, he was very manipulative and toxic from the beginning on. Not only his war views were shit. He wanted katniss only after every time somebody else showed interest in her. While peeta was heartbroken but understood that katniss had no time to figure out her feelings, Gale didn’t. He forced himself on her, kissed her without her consent out of the blue. She did even say in the book that this ruined the friendship. The only reason she considered him even was because he forced her to. Her entire inner dialogue was her trying to talk herself into liking Gale so she wouldn’t loose him. It was hard to read. He was an important friend to her she wanted to rely on, like she did all the time since her dad died. He was very important for her as an ally, but he ignored her basically gave her the silent treatment for not showing interest in him and being close to peeta. He refused helping her in this horrible time because his ego couldn’t handle it. Peeta was nice to Gale while Gale hated him. Peeta watched Gale when he was badly hurt and helped him even after seeing katniss kissing Gale but Gale refused gloves that could maybe have even belonged to peeta and made an entire scene. He hated even the thought that katniss wanted peeta to escape with them. Which made it even harder for katniss to manage two people she needed so desperately. The only reason why he saved peeta was because he thought that would bring him good points with her. Even in the end when prim was dead he didn’t comfort katniss he only brought up how the thing that looked good for him in her eyes was gone now. He was vile and every time i read about him it triggered my ptsd and made it hard to breathe. Katniss always loved peeta. She just didn’t had the time to think about it in this horrible situation she was in and deeply caring for her sister she wanted a good future for

    8:12
Katniss started saying all of that because the conversation helped Peeta remember his favorite color. You can feel the desperation and anguish in her words, along with a hope that it might bring more of his memories back. However, recalling Peeta's past also overwhelmed her. Yes, she is cold with Peeta after the hijacking, but like during the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, she is trying hard to suppress any feelings for him.
Before the Mockingjay movie, she was suppressing her feelings for Peeta because she was trying to hold onto her life back home. Even if she liked him, the relationship with Peeta was forced upon her by the Capitol.
After the Mockingjay, when Peeta was finally rescued, she thought he was going to kiss and hug her. But instead, he tried to kill her. She thought she had lost him forever, which is why she wanted to kill Snow. Quote from the book: “I accept deep down that he’ll never come back to me. Or I’ll never go back to him. I’ll stay in 2 until it falls, go to the Capitol and kill Snow, and then die for my trouble. And he’ll die insane and hating me.”
    17:12
Actually, no-I watched the movies first and then read the books. I didn’t hate him in the movies, but after reading the books, I felt more dislike for him. This was not because of some love triangle, but because he was consumed with revenge. While this is a natural response and I do sympathize with what he went through, but I can also see when a character has flaws and makes questionable decisions. That’s why I like his character: he was a young, traumatized teenager put in a powerful position with little experience, used by Coin, and he made some decisions he would regret forever. That’s why he couldn’t face Katniss after his sister died. It's technically not his fault, but he did play a part in making those inhumane traps to kill medics and katniss warned him about it but he was so far in the mindset of winning the war at all costs that he was okay with any collateral damage.
    18:03 & 20:17
The ending is supposed to be bittersweet. Anyone would feel emotionally drained after what happened. That’s how Katniss must have felt. The ending also shows that even after unimaginable trauma and loses, she still found some hope to live on and felt safe enough to have children.
They bonded because of their shared trauma, but Katniss suppresses her feelings as I mentioned above. You can see this in how she talks about the kiss in the cave and the kiss on the beach. Only because She thought she was going to die in the 75th Hunger Games, that she let her real feelings show during those moments.
The "real or not real" conversation happened after some time had passed. They genuinely became friends, and she wouldn’t lie to him because Peeta would have been okay with just being friends but she choose him and lived the life she deserved for everyone she lost.

She doesn't hate Peeta not at all actually.
Yes she feels like she owns him from the bread, and yes she pretended to be in love with him to survive.
But some of those feelings were genuine.
When he died in the Quarter Quell, that , THAT was love. When she kissed him in the quarter quell that was love!
Even snow and his granddaugther saw it "Someday I want to love somebody that much"
"It is the things we LOVE most, that destroy us"
"In the end the only person I want to comfort me is Haymitch because he LOVES Peeta TOO"
"What I need is not Gale' fire kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring, the bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction.
The promise that life can go on no matter how bad our losses
And only Peeta can give me that"
    There is plenty of evidence.

I was getting a little heated every time he brought up the fact that he doesn’t think Katniss loved Peeta. The pearl she held onto the whole time in mocking jay that he gave her on the each in catching fire, the kissing scene in catching fire where they’re startled by finnick and he realizes what’s going on, when they’re making the family book in catching fire, the fact that she cared so much about him surviving the 75th games even if it meant her death. I really want him to go back and reread the book because the storyline is both beautiful to see her fall in love with him, and heartbreaking to see her try and unlove him. This is a series, like so many others, that I can reread and fine more fine details from the author, that you miss the first time reading.

Agree with all the comments (that i managed to read before writing this) about Katniss and Peeta.
There’s a moment in the first book where she realizes “i guess i have been keeping up with the boy with the bread too”, already pointing to the fact Peeta held a special place. I know, i know it’s not romantic, but him staying in her radar all these years, and him being basically the worst option as a fellow tribute… add that to the fact she firmly believes she WONT marry and have kids. Liking someone romantically is just not in the cards for that teen. She never even speaks of Gale as an option. Only considers it when he brings it up.
In the books i always got the sensd that her feelings for peeta were murky, whereas for Gale are clearly: this is my ride or die partner. Murky feelings in teens usually means there’s something more brewing that are confusing and painful to think about.

But someone like Tigris who supported Snow and then didn't. Katniss saw her in her earliest remembered games. So she was around but what if Haymitchs year was the year she started seeing, started being disillusioned. I can't see what Haymitchs perspective could add and I can't imagine her having it written in the perspective of another tribute we know will not survive. She is in a war! She cant be lovey dovey because it will break her. She cuts off her emotions, goes cold, shuts down and focuses on her task to cope emotionally, always has. She loves peeta and is riddled with grief and guilt with what happened to him and how he reacted to her. I’m not done with the video yet, but I think the flip flopping is exaggerated (because we can’t get inside her head in a film), but I don’t think it’s inaccurate. She’s having a hard time separating the Peeta she fell in love with and the mutt that was returned to her, but he’s only a mutt because he was tortured, and he did so because he’s all the things she’s in love with him for, and how much heartbreak can she put herself through to bring him back even though he doesn’t seem to be getting better and wouldn’t it be easier to put him out of his misery cause it’s not him even though it’s the same voice and the same face of the man she loves. I don’t think we see the thought process on Jen’s face as much as would be helpful, but Katniss is making choices (I assume) based on the above… and she’s still super young so I’m not surprised she can’t stick with her choice at any given moment.

In a scenario where the games had continued, it would have made more sense for her to stay with Gale-they would continue hunting and fighting to survive. But in this scenario at the end, with the end of the Hunger Games, Katniss can finally consider this other option that she never allowed herself to think about. In this new scenario, I think Peeta fits better because Gale kind of represents Katniss's life during the time of the games

Suzanne Collins has said she's been very careful with what she includes in the hunger games world, whether in the original trilogy or the prequels she ended up writing. She's interested in political theory, so in an interview explained the main trilogy was her exploring the concept of a rebellion that must be studied from a prior stage than the uprising itself. And she said that the Snow prequel was her exploring the concept of "state of nature". This makes me more pumped to see what she wants to write about in the Haymitch prequel.

Watching your reviews encouraged me to re-read the books and re-watch the films, and I’m so glad I did. It was nice to be reminded how genuinely excellent they both were!
I disagree with your overall thoughts about Gale, though. He’s not irredeemable or a bad person because of the bomb-or even because of his increasing militarism-but he’s definitely the wrong romantic choice for Katniss. In both the books and the films, he’s incapable of seeing beyond his own emotions. She sets boundaries and makes it clear that she’s not in a headspace to accept anyone’s advances because she’s focused on her own survival. Nevertheless, he toes the line with snippy, passive-aggressive asides, trying to shame her into confessing or picking him (usually in inappropriate and high-stress situations). The fact that he feels so entitled to Katniss’s attention sucks. Peeta is hurt by her rejection in the beginning, but he recognizes his wounded feelings for what they are and apologizes for burdening her when he understands how much pressure she’s under. He doesn’t hide his love, but he does his best to meet her where she is without expectations. And he doesn’t use that love to make her feel guilty when she fails to reciprocate.
The foxhole friend is not the one you want as a long-term romantic partner. Foxhole friends are reactive, constantly looking for threats. Katniss felt less constrained by the Capitol’s rules when she and Gale hunted together, sure, but that’s not the same as feeling safe. You need someone who’s willing to be vulnerable so that you can feel secure enough to be vulnerable too. Gale was never that for Katniss, but Peeta was.

Even long before this point though, Gale demonstrated his lack of compassion for the enemy and drove a wedge between him and Katniss because he didn't understand War. Katniss felt like she had returned home from a war twice and retained her compassion: seeing the other tributes as victims and also the enemy soldiers in 2 as victims. And Gale couldn't understand that. In fact he refused to when Katniss confronted him about it in 2 and about the new weapons he and Beetee were making. She knew that by this point their perspectives were driving them apart and she didn't want or need to be friends with someone who only thought of himself.

Katniss 1000% never wanted a symbolic games. Remember how much she was affected by: Rues death, Thresh, she even has guilt over the boy who killed Rue, and for Cato. Her reaction to the little girl telling her “one day im going to volunteer just like you.”
Book 1, Katniss knows who the real enemy is, the Capitol and Snow. Book 2, she is mistrusting everyone but remembers who the real enemy is in the end. Book 3, the ‘enemy’ takes on a life beyond just Snow but rather the whole concept of a system of power in the wrong hands. She NEVER ever viewed killing kids or any civilians as a form of justice, actively went against it. She’s against the plan at the Nut. She clearly states they gain nothing except playing as Snow’s pawns by killing each other before she gets shot in D2.
She knows the symbolic games were Coins idea. She also knew, thanks to Boggs, that Coin saw her as a threat. So, Katniss voted no, pretending she doesn’t see right through her.
Haymitch doesn’t agree either. In the book it’s explained that Katniss and Haymitch share a look of mutual understanding and trust, and he says “I’m with the Mockingjay.”
And as her final mission, she plans to kill Coin, then take the night lock.

I’m sure you have heard this a lot but the “love triangle” isn’t truly about who Katniss loves more, it’s about who Katniss wants to be. Does she want to be someone who is angry, vengeful, doesn’t care about human lives bc they are against her. Or does she want to be the person who raises up to be helpful, be hopeful, protect innocent lives. That’s the point of the love triangle, Collins uses Peeta and Gale as devices to show the outcomes of war. That’s why in the first book you don’t see Katniss being in love with Peeta, she is vengeful against the Capitol. In the 2nd she finds peace with friends in the arena showing her that there is hope thus developing feelings for Peeta. And in the last book it’s her choice, will she let war take over her or will she be hopeful for the future

I will say, the first time I read the books I felt the same way. I was so mad she ended up with either of them. After re-reading it a few times over the last 10 or so years, my opinion has changed a little. I think she does need Peeta in her life, but not sure to what capacity. I still hate Gale though. He's not shy about seeing others as inhuman - from the first book (you can hunt. animals. it's no different) to the last where he breaks down the psychology of prey to create his snares. Also, about Katniss flip-flopping. She's been through a lot and the capitol and this war has taken every single emotion she's had and used it against her (she says as much in Mockingjay when Peeta and Gale have their chat). She's confused and doesn't have the capacity to figure it out in the story, which is understandable. She's also 17. What 17 year old knows what they want without being the catalyst that collapses society around them?
Anyway, I love these videos and your reactions. Congrats for making it this far despite how haunting, tragic and depressing the whole thing is 😅 Get yourself a little treat and a happy tale as a reward!

There was such a unique experience of reading this as a child and experiencing the conversation throughout adulthood. Katniss as an unreliable narrator wasn’t something i understood until I was like a full blown adult. Also to put it into perspective, culturally hunger games was supposed to be a jarring response to twilight “Jacob v Edward” where female characters were given the depth young girls craved. So yeah her “choosing” someone at the end wasn’t logical but it was expected in that time period of YA fiction to pick a side. I remember every tumblr blog arguing over hunger games being sophisticated and not needing a romance plot but in the end it still wrapped up with a romantic partner which tbh frustrated me too but there was also the conversation that there is no ending that could have been comforting given what she had gone through.

At issue here is that he has a few fundamental misunderstandings. And maybe it’s from not fully getting that Katniss is an unreliable narrator (or maybe not seeing how that impacts how the story is told). You can’t take what she says or her narration of the story at face value. For example, thinking she is flip flopping on her feelings. No, she just shuts down the feelings she’s having because she can’t cope with the pain of losing Peeta (as he was). It’s easier to convince herself he’s not Peeta anymore and be detached from her previous feelings.
Also, not realizing that she did have feelings for him way earlier than she realizes. She actually had strong feelings of love by the end of the first book. Because she’s an unreliable narrator, we as readers can’t fully accept what she tells us, we have to understand what she shows us. As an example, in the second book she describes watching Peeta draw and being fascinated by his eyelashes. She’s just sitting in his company, staring at him, watching him do something mundane because it’s pleasant and comfortable and intriguing for her to do so. She loves with him by that point. But she can’t tell us that because she doesn’t understand it. So Collins shows us through describing what Katniss is doing.
I think a reread of the books with focus on what Collins shows us despite what Katniss tells us would alter his conclusions A LOT.

As someone who loves katniss and peeta im shocked at so many people saying "you don't understand katniss" when you have also read the books, your interpretation is just as valid. I don't agree katniss chose peeta because he was her last option, I believe katniss was in love with peeta but I fully understand why you don't want them to get together. You explained why they shouldn't have been together (or at least so soon) and you're probably right they did use each other as emotional crutches and the experiences they went through at such a young age doesnt mean that being married to each other for the next 40-50 years is going to work out. It is a story and a love story so it is all very fitting in the end for them to come together but you made a lot of realistic points, and people are trying to explain to you what you already know. I also feel like most of people's hatred towards gale stems for their love for peeta which is completely biased

Katniss is being harsh because she can't bear caring for Peeta while he's brain washed, it's too painful. But at the end, she learns that her heart is now safe and she can allow herself to love him.
