    I had no idea that people didn't like the Life Aquatic, I can understand how some people might not like Wes Anderson's style as a whole, but to pick out a single movie out of his excellent lineup to dislike seems bizarre to me

      IT'S SERIOUSLY CRAZY TO ME DUDE I HAD TO CUT IT FROM THE SCRIPT AS A MENTION BUT IT'S GENUINELY BIZARRE TO ME THAT ITS CRITICAL AGGREGATE SCORE IS BENEATH 60%

      Really? It's in my top 3 Wes Anderson films and at least in my top 20 favourite films of all time. I don't see how it is so badly received from a critical standpoint.

      Same! I like it more than any other Wes Anderson movie I've seen and loved it the first time I saw it. I was astounded when I saw that it was so widely disliked. I'm really thankful that youtube recommended me this video

      Iis Arman It's interesting that ralphthemoviemaker would say that because I've always felt kinda similarly about some of his other movies, i.e. that they get caught up in their own quirkiness.

    Even in an analysis video, devoid of context, I started tearing up at the jaguar-shark/everybody-hold-out-a-hand-and-touch-Zissou scene. Not crying, mind you. But definitely feeling it. God, such a good movie.
    And (in my opinion) Anderson's funniest, too.

    I see such a big connection between Steve Zissou and Bojack Horseman. Both characters are on the surface awful human beings but both characters drag so much grief and history with them that you know they could be better, you know how they became the person they are now and you know that they can still come back from it. Two of the most emotionally powerful characters ever created and both were misunderstood when people first saw them.

    I love how Ned starts with an N. And Zissou starts with a Z. They are kindred spirits, and it doesn’t matter if Ned was his biological son or not, because they shared a love from afar they got to express on their journey. Ned got to go on an adventure with his idol. And Steve Zissou got his spark back

    Great review! This movie is so fantastic. My personal favorite of any film out there :) I saw another person talking about the path of Eleanore, specifically when they buried Ned at sea. Do you believe she was mourning the death of her wish-it-could-have-been-hers child?
    To me it felt like her decision to come rejoin the team and fund the rest of their mission was her telling Ned that she was ready to be his new mother and Steve the father. I believe that the reason she left in the first place was not just because of the argument they had but because she wasn’t sure of herself in being ready for a maternal role. That’s why she needed breathing room. When Ned’s casket floated down, she was watching and mourning with no one around her. She felt alone in the world. But she also wanted the privilege of seeing her son last.
    Let me know what you think!

    • @JERLOG-y1g
      @JERLOG-y1g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree... it was the same thing I thought. Even, when she tells Jane that Steve was infertile, it was clear that, more than a statement, it was a lie that she had told herself to explain why Steve did not want to have a child with her...

    Life Aquatic is a fantastic film I’ve watched countless times. It was misunderstood at the time. A beautifully shot, acted, and written movie. A perfect companion for The Tenenbaums. film.
    Wes Anderson was unfairly accused of relying upon a budget to replace creativity as if it were the cinematic version of The Doors’ Soft Parade.

    What did you mean by “symbols in all of his films?”. Can you elaborate a bit more and give more examples? Good video by the way

    • @davuswentzel8847
      @davuswentzel8847 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For example, what do cigarettes symbolize? What do pets symbolize? What do dead languages symbolize?

    • @jackviney2389
      @jackviney2389 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hes saying his first 2? Were also mainly about father/son parent/child relationships. And the main characters in these movies do things obsessively or irresponsibly to make up for a lack of a father figure. In Rushmore he obsesses over dead languages thus will obviously have no use for them just as he has no hope for a father figure. The kids in the tenenbaums had a shit dad so Margot smoked cigarettes and hides it as they all hide any semblance of desire to have their dad around except for owen Wilson's character who has a pet ?hawk? And takes care of it as his relationship with his father is more of a flip of the father son thing where he puts his neck out to let him sleep in the family house both of them being things who's relationship is based solely on his efforts to keep the relationship alive and without him would be perfectly fine. Sorry I haven't seen Rushmore in ages so I can't speak on it that much but the tenenbaums is one I watch every do often. Hope that helped you out man. Remember to not watch these essay vids just to get ideas put in ur head for you. ALWAYS try to be the ashsole that analyzes art and try your best to figure it out. Analysis is an art form in itself and broadswords stuff is just that, beautifully crafted but another video could also be made on a completely different take. I also dont even know if you were asking for an analysis on the symbolism or just wanted to know what movie their from If it's the latter I apologize in which case. Dead languages is from Rushmore. And the pet and cigs are from the Royal Tenembaums.

    Some people say stuff like "I'm really smart" because of a highly misguided view of themselves and the world. Some people say it in their videos as a form of ironic self-deprecation, mirroring the aforementioned misguided, or simply as a sarcastic joke. Maybe you actually do the same. But every time I watch your videos I can't help but feel like you may be the one of the only people on the internet who deserves to say it in all its glory. Not only is its truth demonstrated throughout the video in your eloquence and knowledgeability, but the succinctness of the claim and the impression of naiveté it holds perfectly fit the more casual, even humorous, side of your videos.

    I wasn't aware that _The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou_ NEEDED someone to make an "argument for" it. I was under the impression that it was universally considered to be an all around classic of cinema and one of Wes Anderson's absolute BEST - quite possibly his BEST EVER. _PERIOD._
    Even if it got shit from critics when it first came out, it has been vindicated since coming out by basically EVERYBODY. Including most of, maybe even ALL of, the people who shat on it when it first came out...

  • @robertiordan6867
    @robertiordan6867 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now I know on a deeper level why I dislike the movie, except for the idea of the plot that’s really unintresting. I profoundly disliked Steve. Wes’ attempt to “manipulate” us into painting Steve as the good guy didn’t land for me, and made me think he’s just a narcisistic gaslighter. Am I supposed to root for that? There’s no gradual change to his character, so I’m just supposed to accept the fact that he’s changed in the last 20 minutes mostly because the son that he treated like shit died all of the sudden. I enjoy antagonistic characters and often root for the underdog but Steve as a character and his character development destroyed this otherwise mediocre film. And this is my 4 th Wes film and I adored the 3 others.

    I disagree that he’s unlikable and unredeemed till the end. Steve is possibly one of his most realistic characters in a Wes Anderson film because of his emotional complexity. While Zissou was quick to insult you, he’d also immediately apologize if you call him out on it. Granted, yes he did point a gun at a pregnant woman, but sometimes you have to prove a point.

    Maybe it’s just me, but the Buckaroo Bonzai ending was just a cherry on top of the sundae. Goldbloom got to strut again.

    Steve Zissou drops the subtlety when mentioning Cousteau & his Cronies when talking about the Zissou diving helmet comes with radio music.

    It seems to be written and filmed from the perspective of a child. It is as if a child saw all of this and was given the opportunity to describe it in terms as well as a child could, without any adult help in explaining what certain things said and situations mean. This movie is not unlike listening to a young child with an advanced vocabulary that is brutally honest because he has no filter.

    I want Wes Anderson to do Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin so bad! I feel he’s the only one that could put her work on screen.

    I need you to do me a favor and point me towards the people who argue against this movie. Because they're gonna learn the meaning of "Not if I don't see you first sonny." This movie is the best.

    I saw this film last night in preparation for this video, and i absolutely loved it. Maybe growing up by the sea make me a little biased, but everything is just so perfect. Music, sound, visuals, acting, everything. This video was like icing on the cake. Thank you for making great videos. Keep up the good work!

    Keep up the good work. You are killing it. Love what you have been doing with the score, the heavily reverberated music is a very creative touch.

    I watched this movie with my (ex) boyfriend and literally had to stop watching it in the middle because I was not in the right headspace to see it lol Hopefully I can go back one day and watch it with a new perspective now that I am in a better place

    Your works are incredible and it's a shame they don't get more attention. It's really awesome to be able to see your pure, unwavering passion for whatever it is you're talking about in these videos.

    Idk if it was an attempt to be funny or edgy but I didn’t get it. Definitely needs to be edited out of the video. Wtf 😂 🤢

    My fave Anderson film bar none. I saw it three times at the cinema. Twice on the same day. In my top three films of all time.
