I had no idea that people didn't like the Life Aquatic, I can understand how some people might not like Wes Anderson's style as a whole, but to pick out a single movie out of his excellent lineup to dislike seems bizarre to me
IT'S SERIOUSLY CRAZY TO ME DUDE I HAD TO CUT IT FROM THE SCRIPT AS A MENTION BUT IT'S GENUINELY BIZARRE TO ME THAT ITS CRITICAL AGGREGATE SCORE IS BENEATH 60%
Really? It's in my top 3 Wes Anderson films and at least in my top 20 favourite films of all time. I don't see how it is so badly received from a critical standpoint.
Same! I like it more than any other Wes Anderson movie I've seen and loved it the first time I saw it. I was astounded when I saw that it was so widely disliked. I'm really thankful that youtube recommended me this video
Iis Arman It's interesting that ralphthemoviemaker would say that because I've always felt kinda similarly about some of his other movies, i.e. that they get caught up in their own quirkiness.
while I'm not 100% sure if it's my favorite (it's definitely up there on an unranked top 10 if I were to make one) it DOES feel like if any film on the planet were made specifically for an audience of me, it'd be this one
People say that when someone says something like that, it's because they're jealous. But it still hurts. It hurts bad. That man was damn rude. He can go straight to Hell.
I love how Ned starts with an N. And Zissou starts with a Z. They are kindred spirits, and it doesn’t matter if Ned was his biological son or not, because they shared a love from afar they got to express on their journey. Ned got to go on an adventure with his idol. And Steve Zissou got his spark back
This is the movie that made me start paying attention to Wes Anderson. It's still my favorite honestly. It's certainly one of the films I've watched well over 20 times in my life. It's been a good while now though.
I see such a big connection between Steve Zissou and Bojack Horseman. Both characters are on the surface awful human beings but both characters drag so much grief and history with them that you know they could be better, you know how they became the person they are now and you know that they can still come back from it. Two of the most emotionally powerful characters ever created and both were misunderstood when people first saw them.
Even in an analysis video, devoid of context, I started tearing up at the jaguar-shark/everybody-hold-out-a-hand-and-touch-Zissou scene. Not crying, mind you. But definitely feeling it. God, such a good movie. And (in my opinion) Anderson's funniest, too.
I'm really happy this series is going on. In a time where you can't look online without another news story saying we are screwed to others arguing over basic human rights its nice to have a series trying to think positive
I've been away for some time, I actually found out I had a son who I had never met before however sadly he passed away in a tragic helicopter accident. However it brings me joy to know that there are people out there who still enjoy this wonderful film.
I think it must’ve been jarring for people, it was his first big steps into a world of hyper reality. Now with so many animation credits under his belt, if this came out more recently, it would be much better received I think.
This is my favorite Wes Anderson Film, and until now, I hadn't found anyone else that loved it as much as me. It's always everyones worst Wes movie. It's my best. I love it!!!
I don’t think Life Aquatic is Wes Anderson’s best film, but it’s certainly not his worst and it’s my favorite. Grand Budapest, Moonrise Kingdom, Darjeeling Limited, etc… are all great films, but Life Aquatic is the one I have watched the most by far.
Life Aquatic is a fantastic film I’ve watched countless times. It was misunderstood at the time. A beautifully shot, acted, and written movie. A perfect companion for The Tenenbaums. film. Wes Anderson was unfairly accused of relying upon a budget to replace creativity as if it were the cinematic version of The Doors’ Soft Parade.
Great review! This movie is so fantastic. My personal favorite of any film out there :) I saw another person talking about the path of Eleanore, specifically when they buried Ned at sea. Do you believe she was mourning the death of her wish-it-could-have-been-hers child? To me it felt like her decision to come rejoin the team and fund the rest of their mission was her telling Ned that she was ready to be his new mother and Steve the father. I believe that the reason she left in the first place was not just because of the argument they had but because she wasn’t sure of herself in being ready for a maternal role. That’s why she needed breathing room. When Ned’s casket floated down, she was watching and mourning with no one around her. She felt alone in the world. But she also wanted the privilege of seeing her son last. Let me know what you think!
Totally agree... it was the same thing I thought. Even, when she tells Jane that Steve was infertile, it was clear that, more than a statement, it was a lie that she had told herself to explain why Steve did not want to have a child with her...
Wes Anderson for me created the greatest prologue in film history with the first 10 or so minutes of Royal Tenenbaums, the most unexpected and beautifully emotional scene in history with the Jaguar Shark scene in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, "Do you think he remembers me" gets me every damn time. He's one of, if not the only directors where you can pull any screenshot from basically any of their films and you instantly know it is from a Wes Anderson film. Such a completely unique feel, aesthetic and mood. I've yet to see one of his films I didn't like. He is probably my favorite filmmaker ever. He is nearly unparalleled in soundtrack selections. And because of his films, I am now an appreciative of classical pieces like Claire De Lune and the Gymnopedeis, non English renditions of Bowie and have a deeper appreciation for artists I already enjoyed like The Faces, John Lennon, The Kinks, etc. His casting is beyond reproach. Is there a single casting choice that wasn't basically perfect? Actors I love have their best work with him, Murray, Hackman, Huston. Actors I was never particularly a fan of put in great performances like Ben Stilled and Gwyneth Paltrow. Every time I learn there's a new Wes Anderson film coming, I get a sense of joy and wonder at the thought of what weird little troupe of characters we will get to peek in at this time. Already said it, but damn. The guys got basically a perfect record.
I adore this movie. So fun. So funny. Entertaining. I laughed. Cried like a baby during the Ned’s death sequence and fell in love with the Zombies song. I can watch this movie every day. 10/10.
Hey man, I’ve just watched all of your videos, I love the pacing and your inflection! You have a wonderful way with words and I appreciate the critiques you’re making. You brought many things to light that I didn’t realize! Keep working man! I love it!
I liked it, but I LOVED the soundtrack. Wes Anderson movies have such a great use of previously made music and visuals, it’s like you could really see what he was thinking when he heard it for the first time.
Recently found your videos and just finished watching all of them. Not only is your critique insightful and well thought out. But the presentation, with the video editing and the music, and your calming voice is spot on
This will always be one of my favorites.. the emotions hidden behind the comedy mixed with the perfectly placed music is all I need in this type of film.
Best parts about this channel can be summed up by your voice and your choice of films/ shows you talk about. Never knew this film existed but I'll tell you what, I wanna watch it now.
Your videos are AMAZING!!! Super well editing skills, outstanding visuals, and top of the line literary breakdowns!! I can't wait for your next video however long it takes
Your works are incredible and it's a shame they don't get more attention. It's really awesome to be able to see your pure, unwavering passion for whatever it is you're talking about in these videos.
Please make more of these. I found your channel by accident and wow am I glad I did everything you put out is a true tour de forme of filmography. Your use of background music is majestic honestly keep it up, I love every single one of these videos.
I saw this film last night in preparation for this video, and i absolutely loved it. Maybe growing up by the sea make me a little biased, but everything is just so perfect. Music, sound, visuals, acting, everything. This video was like icing on the cake. Thank you for making great videos. Keep up the good work!
That you for making these videos. They speak of an old nostalgia for people in their twenty or thirty something's, remembering nights as children looking out the windows of a car at night with the hum of a radio in the background and the tired expectation that maybe something fun might happen before bed, before inevitably passing out. It's the feeling of being at a slumber party wanting to stay up late, yet still sleeping despite that. It's old and friendly. And I miss it.
Your content never fails to be incredibly enjoyable and exploring these topics with you always draws me in. Awesome work. Looking forward to the future Satoshi Kon vids.
i have a orange beanie that has the patch of team zissou the life aquatic and it came from a person that changed my life so i pretty much where it even day
Your videos are so moving, well scripted, phenomenally produced, and incredibly genuine. Thank you for posting such great content, I always look forward to your next video.
Man, every time I watch this film again, I see new details and themes present. I feel like the viewing experience has a lot to do with where you are own in your own life and what's on your mind. In that way, it has something for everyone.
for anyone wondering the Portuguese David Bowie singer is Seu Jorge fun fact David Bowie actually said "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."
This movie is in my top 5. So good, every time, every time," I wonder if he remembers me," comes on it sucker punches me in my emotions. God! Why is this film so good?
I rented this movie when I was super sick, I couldn't get out of my bed but to use the bathroom. This movie played in the background for 3 days straight, filling my fever dreams. I love this movie becuse it kept me insane in the best way while I was fighting off death.
This is one of my favorite channels on all of TH-cam. It is a refreshing change to see a movie reviewer look at movies with affection. There is so much hate and criticism out there that it can be a little depressing. Thank you so much and keep up the amazing content
Oh my god. I have been consumig millions of different youtube videos for the last seven years non-stop. And after I have watched a review on Treasure Plannet I binge-watched all the vids on this channel. Man you are insanly fucking talanted. Great combination of intelegence, sence of humour and a pleasing voice. Like it's so increadibly satisfying to hear the passion in your voice while learning so much new infirmation and cracking a laugh. It's really amazing to see high quality youtubee content in the age of non-sence 10min videos and fortnite highlights. You have to keep doing it man you will definetly make it big. Thank you gor hours of intertaiment and sorry for ma bad english
I have a soft spot for this movie because it was the first movie I watched after finishing my undergrad thesis on post-war Japanese cinema and having to watch a bunch of generally depressing movies so it was like the first glimpse of light I had in months lol
My love of this film and way you passionately say many of the things I have been screaming for years came together and I actually got misty watching this. Thank you young sir, beautiful and heartfelt video about a beautiful and heartfelt film.
The amount of Animal work that went into this film is another great aspect. There are animals everywhere. The Pythons on resort island are huge, and Steve isn't even put out by the big green Python when he is right next to it, which is one of my favorite scenes. Steve is a lover of Animals not people. They never cause him the problems that people do (exept shark). And upon his demise into obscurity he finally learns to become less narcissistic and get along better with people. They spent hundreds of hours and many many many takes to get the animal scenes just right, and every part of the movie just right. Talented three leg got much sympathy from Steve right away, whereas his own son had to spend weeks just to get the truth about the letter only to die :-(

it might be because they don't like that particular movie, y'know
No need to make an argument for it for me - it's one of my favorite movies. I always cry at the end.
Same. Really hits home for us that have complicated father relationships.
Do you think it remembers me?
Same, its my 2nd favorite movie, and I've teared up at the ending twice
Me too
This is legit my favorite Wes Andersen film. lt breaks my heart that it's largely forgotten.
The life aquatic is my favorite movie at all time
Diego jackanape Me too!

People say that when someone says something like that, it's because they're jealous. But it still hurts. It hurts bad.

*throws earring* *holds out hand to receive it, after his son picks it up, without looking or saying thank you* classic Zissou.

Steve Zissou drops the subtlety when mentioning Cousteau & his Cronies when talking about the Zissou diving helmet comes with radio music.
It would be great to see your opinion in other wes anderson films.
LOVE YOU
Fantastic mr fox, plz

Vicente Ortega Rubilar it would be great to see his opinion on anything lol
Even in an analysis video, devoid of context, I started tearing up at the jaguar-shark/everybody-hold-out-a-hand-and-touch-Zissou scene. Not crying, mind you. But definitely feeling it. God, such a good movie.

This is my families favorite Wes Anderson movie. I have never understood why it got hate.

This is my favorite Wes Anderson Film, and until now, I hadn't found anyone else that loved it as much as me. It's always everyones worst Wes movie. It's my best. I love it!!!
The finale with “Queen Bitch” always reminds me I watched a great film.
Just... the music playing in the background the entire time. Thank you.
OnimaxBlade which song is it?
Sitting in the park
