My favourite Wes Anderson film to date. I love how the visuals reflect Zero's narrative, since we're viewing the entire film through the memory of Zero and other characters, so not exactly how they happened, but how they were experienced.

The ladder gag (along with others) is based off of a Buster Keaton gag. As in the way the author presents the much filtered story is partially filtered through the lens of the old movies that inspire so much of this film. Brilliant.

Love the fact that all the mystery surrounding how that boy came to own such a luxurious hotel, and the reason was because at the time, the man he worked for made a contract to be his heir that seemed like a joke at the time considering what he would get for it, but no one would have ever expected he would be gifted a large fortune just because he was good to her in the later years of her life. The pastry in question is a religieuse. It it is a French pastry made of a small choux pastry case stacked on top of a larger one, both filled with crème pâtissière, commonly flavoured with chocolate or mocha. Each case is topped with a ganache of the same flavour as the filling, then attached to each other using piped buttercream icing. It is a type of éclair.

5:30 (TW: I'm a Film Person) Believe it or not, this has a thematic purpose! One of the movie's underlying themes is the takeover of facism/Nazism in 1930s Europe. Several of the characters can be interpreted as stand-ins for groups who were especially targeted by facism: Monsieur Gustave represents queer people, Deputy Kovacs represents Jewish people, Zero represents immigrants/refugees of color, Serge X represents the French who were subjugated during the German occupation, and Serge's sister, who has a prosthetic foot, represents disabled people.

The problem isn't with Wes Anderson films; the problem is with the Cinema Sins narrator's capacity for perfection, which is as it should be.

Watching a Wes Anderson film is like playing a Halo Campaign on Legendary.
Your self-confidence is obliterated within the first 30 seconds.
