Same here, I haven't played since last August. Been playing since console release, maybe it's probably due to burn out but the game doesn't really keep me invested like it used to.
Knowing zenimax they wont make them last forever like helldivers 2 or the master chief collection, but it would be so nice if they did instead of relying on fomo to sell stuff. The golden persuits feel like a form of battlepass.
This is one of those times where I really want to be wrong. It's never a good sign when I want to be wrong. We wait and see. I have other MMORPGs to play.
I've heard these whispers and you know what? Look what's came to ESO so far... 1st was endeavors, and now the gold pursuits (which immediately made me think BATTLE PASS) it has everything except having to pay to unlock the prizes. Just curious if it will entail being an ESO+ subscriber or if it would be behind a new pay wall...
It's 2 part for me personally: #1 On one hand, the seasonal model is exciting because we are revisiting old areas, telling new stories with things already in place (dark brotherhood, thieves guild etc.). I'm a big fan of them FINALLY changing up the model, especially when chapters as of late have felt no larger than the old Q4 zone DLCs. I also am a fan of being able to earn more stuff via gameplay versus JUST purchasing it outright in a store. It feels better to me to purchase a season pass and at least play the game to earn stuff rather than buying crown crates and not having anything tangible to earn in game cosmetic-wise. #2 Knowing ZOS, this will be monetized out the wha-zoo. What would be BEST for the consumer and what I sincerely hope for is that the paid battle pass, which is almost surely to come, will be HEAVILY discounted or even free with ESO+ especially because there won't be dungeon DLCs/chapters and the like as far as i know moving forward that are SEPARATE from the seasons. At that point, the craft bag will be the only real selling point for ESO+, so I imagine that it'd be free or really discounted. HOWEVER - knowing ZOS, i think they're going to charge everyone for the battle pass regardless of if they have ESO+ or not. No matter how you look at it, there are tasteful ways to do this. If you look at how WoW has recently done the trading post, I was hoping for something along these lines, but we'll have to wait and see in April. The team has gotten noticeably smaller over time, likely due to the necessity for more manpower for their other MMO they're developing and it shows - hotfixes are generally non-existent (if you have a bad update, you're waiting another 3mo until the next update for things to get fixed at the FASTEST); updates are smaller and smaller (look at Gold Road versus something like Blackwood or Morrowind for effort/time spent in the zone/story quality/etc). ESO is no doubt slowing down. They even indirectly stated that this will be more manageable for the team rather than a "big" chapter release, which IMO has felt smaller and smaller every year. Game isn't dead, but it's hurting big time and they can either make this a home run and bring a lot of people in or this can be the stake through the game's heart. We shall see! Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst based on previous updates, communication, mistakes and direction.
Exactly this, Battle Passes are almost always bad, they often start out good but always worsen over time until you just get literal recolors of old skins and less worthwhile rewards for the same price each season. ESO has got to avoid going that route. I always zoom out and look at the larger corporate environment and microsoft's fingerprints are all over this so I hope someone at zos is pushing back, we have 2 decades of microsoft absorbing and destroying studios to look at and this is very reminiscent of that
But wait - WHY does a change to seasonal content seem like a battle pass? Are battle passes the only way a game can have seasons? Didn’t they claim the change was mainly in the pace for releasing new content? A shift away from one big dump a year?
A battlepass is a way to monetize seasons. They monetized their updates via big chapter releases at $40USD. How do you think they'll monetize the game and seasons moving forward? They're absolutely not going to solely rely on crown store purchases/cosmetics for income. They're going to have to replace that income from the chapters somehow - that's all the shareholders and execs are looking at. You monetize seasons via battlepasses and disguise it as a way to earn stuff in game.
Battle passes means absolutely nothing to me. Always have. Always will. I paid for all my expansions to show them support so if they making content free due to a battle pass they loss money and I saved. If it's part of battle pass I always paid for it so no biggie unless the price goes up far more than the content gained.
Good thing a lot of great games are coming. Been playing this game since launch and I have lasted through a lot of real garbage but this change pushes me to far plus threatening nefas was my limit.

The bonds between players and MMOs either break easily or never. I remember similar videos with the same concerned expressions on faces when Lord of the Rings Online suffered its Gold Road - a touch of irony in that name - moment with Riders of Rohan. It did mark the end of the game as they knew it. But many stayed and will never leave. Legends of Kesmai - a 1980s MMO - is still played on emulators as is Star Wars Galaxy. Free servers abound for Ultima Online and some still play the pay version which is less than a shadow of what UO was. Lifecycles apply to everything, even the universe as we know it.
I think seasons and a battle pass would be great. I’ve done nearly everything in a game so something that gives me a reason to login everyday or month sounds great
Seasonal model with no big chapter release bringing in money every year - how do you think they're going to monetize things going forward if not with a battlepass?
Everyone has their own opinion, but as a beta player, I am very happy to see the return of the old system of content release. Just yesterday I looked at the datamain, it has a lot of interesting things waiting for us. Elaborate quests, intrigue, a return to the old storyline and a continuation of the guild quest chain. I'm willing to pay a subscription for it like I did in 2014, it's much better than the current system.
I don't see why people are assuming it will be a Battle Pass. World of Warcraft does seasonal content, and it is a monthly subscription, that's it. People are over-hyping all of this.
what did you thing you would be buying if you wernt buying chapters if you have 4 seasons a year at $30 thats $120 a year which is way more then people just buying the $40 chapters......you will most likely be buying the harder overland content. Zos wouldnt have switched to seasonal content if they didnt think they could make more money off it. This is a big money grab by zos.

You're essentially paying them to keep their catalog alive and to fund future projects that are not ESO. ESO had plenty of money and nothing was fixed, in fact it was streamlined to become Bethesda's cash cow by pruning the dev team and focusing on annual content and the crown store.
