- Sega is de-listing dozens of classic games, many of which will become unavailable to buy in their original forms. Perhaps most egregious of these is Crazy Taxi, with a remake/reboot coming next year, will this actually do more to hurt rather than help the new entry?
Sega Megadrive & Genesis Classics has been a legal way to acquire the roms within for use in any emulator, so this removal is a particularly heavy blow to game preservation. Get them while you can - store.steampow...

Companys fought so hard agains piracy..now they force us to do it 🎉
Well let's hope they start fighting even harder.
Companies are never your friends.
I knew SEGA had stunk when they first delisted the classic Sonic games in favor of Sonic Origins.
Then they did something similar with Sonic Generations.
And now they pull this.
This was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
This is the same company that took down roms on Vimm's Lair and Streets of Rage Remake. It probably won't be long before SEGA delists Sonic Mania, too!
actually you still able to buy sonic generations in a bundle so its not delisted just bundled
As a younger collector (23), I've always been interested in the games of the past. Growing up with emulation introduced me to so many classics that I now have the power to play officially today. It's heartbreaking that companies are so willing to make that experience harder with what seems like every year. Businesses are so single-minded that they never take into account us younger audiences that are curious about the games that made the company what it is today. I own a dreamcast, there's always something i have to fix due to its aging hardware. Thank God I bought the genesis bundle back when it was whole ages ago. Otherwise, I'd have to have started collecting cartiges back then. It was convenient to have digital ports of classics to reduce the costs that come with collecting the games that didn't get one. The fact that sega is doing this makes it all the more saddening. They were the biggest reason I got into retro games. They used to be the cool guys that put out ports on ps3/360 of games like daytona and fighting vipers. Now, they can't be bothered to give you a stand-alone console port of Sonic 1. I keep hoping that these delistings will lead to an even greater collection of classics spanning all their systems, but when you brought up all their past funny buisness, I know now that I'm thinking like they still care about accessibility. If their big plans go south, we're even more screwed. They will take it as customers not wanting anything to do with the IPs and we will have lost all of these games for nothing. It'll just be more Sonic and Yakuza for years to come. RIP cool Sega. They've lost a part of what made them special to me and other gamers like me.
Is it still possible to get all of them? Are all the games still on any physical copies?
Congrats sega, piracy is at an all time high because of shit like this
And these companies treat us like criminals by shoving anti piracy propaganda in our faces.
I already own them all on Steam and i have a DRM free backup of them.
I guess Sega will sell a new collection at a higher price later.
I was just done saying "At least SEGA is not as bad as Nintendo", and this happened...
SEGA sued people for non-commercial fan art, man.
so Sega is seeking round 2 for their decline. Yakuza and Sonic movies save them and they already way over their head. So yeah, lets see if they come back again after the 2nd downfall.
Sega started releasing games like Sonic R and Sonic 3 on PC, now they want to scrub their Steam games. Absolute insanity
I have a similiar love for Sega. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, but ended up going with the Xbox rather than Gamecube because of Crazy Taxi 3 and other Sega titles. Very enjoyable video.
SEGA used to be the cutting edge of gaming, thats why I loved them.
Rehashing the same old junk every other year is not cutting edge and frankly just lame.
Make new and exiting games or GTFO
Same here I loved Sega because of the Mega Drive. Like so many great licensed movie tie in games and fast food tie in games like Toy Story and Global Gladiators made me love the Mega Drive besides Sonic and Road Rash.
It's always cool to see a person with a passion do some exposition against the ever growing popularity of "is it making money? No? Then scrap it." mentality of corporations these days.
Good work Kris.
Me and my friends all play Sega bass fishing together, racing each other to finish the arcade mode and to see who gets the biggest bass. When the news came out that Sega was delisting a bunch of games (Crazy taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, Space Channel 5, Nights and more) the group chat went wild! How dare Sega prevent people from enjoying their fishing?
Then when people who want to play the game go to play it but it's not available they will go to emulate and these companies will get upset, like they always do. This delisting issue is not just a Sega issue, its an industry wide issue, and these companies keep delisting and removing games (Like Driver San Fransisco, Little Big planet 3, and so, so many more.) and then wonder "Why is our games getting pirated?"
I guess when it comes down to it, companies don't care about preserving the past or about older fans, all they care about is profits and money. Their soulless rehashes of classic game titles will never stand as strong as the originals and they know it, that is why they likely delist the ogs because they're all like "Don't look in the past where we made games that are good without the overinflated monetization system, look to the present, look at our beautiful monetization system, you want to spend money on our battle pass, you want to spend money on the cosmetics. If you don't spend money on our new crappier version of our old game it's clear you don't like the franchise anymore so we will retire it."
No wonder the indie scene in the gaming industry is doing so well these days, the giants of the industry are fumbling the bag trying to suck their consumers dry because the shareholders only want to increase profits for their own pockets, they don't want to create games filled with love and fun, they want people to think it's the "next best thing" and hope the gamers of the world will put their money in because "its a franchise I know and love and grew up with, it will bring me back to my childhood and I will have fun... right?" and next thing you know after spending money on buying said game and purchasing some cosmetics, just like the shareholders want. They don't care about fun, all they care about is profits.
Another great set of games possibly lost due to corporate greed. Pirate old games, these companies don't deserve your money, save it for idk... some snacks or something. Support the indie developers, they want you to have fun.
This guy sounds like he’s about to tell me the habitat and lifestyle of Europian hedgehogs in excruciating detail
Sega used to be a worthwhile company. After early 1995 with "Ristar" (which was supposed to be the successor of the "Sonic" IP), the cracks began to show. The botched launch of the Saturn outside of Japan would be the beginning of Sega's downfall from the hardware market. And the commercial failure of the Dreamcast due to past mistakes catching up would cement Sega's downfall from the hardware market.
After the Dreamcast's unfortunate failure, the soul of Sega kind of died, and as it did, so did their mascot, which is Sonic himself. There were several classic elements that continued on after March 2001, but Sega weren't the same anymore. Bad business decisions led to them becoming a lesser version of themselves.
In mid-2017 (mid-2018), there was a slight resurgence of the soul of Sega and their mascot when "Sonic Mania (Plus)" was released. However, that resurgence would only be brief before Sega would slowly go back to making bad business decisions that led to their downfall from the hardware market in the first place. They never really learned from their mistakes.
In mid-2022 (mid-2023), the soul of Sega and their mascot started to die completely when "Sonic Origins (Plus*)" was released; the physical copy itself was up to ver. 1.5.0/1.05 ('Plus' content was download only), moderately patched by modders for Stealth and Headcannon that weren't given the proper time to polish up the compilation. The compilation itself was serviceable (if only for the sake of preservation), but it would be the beginning of the complete downfall for OG hardcore fans. And the classic-ish reboot "Sonic Superstars" (prioritizing storytelling over everything else) would cement that complete downfall for OG hardcore fans; the soul of Sega and their mascot died completely when that game was released, not living up to the legacy of the pre-classic main games (that being the 16-bit "Sonic" games and "Sonic Mania (Plus)") in terms of quality.
----------
Nowadays, the classic version of Sega (console) is mostly worthwhile, and the modern version of Sega (post-console) is inconsistent but somewhat worthwhile. However, the post-modern version of Sega (November 2022) is very inconsistent and nowhere near worthwhile; they've proven time and time again that they don't really care about quality, especially when it comes to their mascot, which is Sonic himself. They're a complete shell of their former selves.
Back when Sega delisted the old Sonic games, I knew that were going to be just as bad as Square Enix with rereleases. Turns out, they're even worse.
Ive always heard people saying that sega isnt as bad as nintendo. They are and always were, theyre just better at hiding it.
That Squidward transition was top-notch. Well done
While retro games are not really what I am into I found myself really interested. I agreed with a lot of what you were saying! You did such a fantastic job on this video and was really fun to watch and very well done. I'm very much looking forward to more videos about these kinds of games.
I’m probably wrong on this, but I have a feeling they’re creating a new console
Preach it! I'm here, my ol' "ratatouille" arms raised, shouting in praise, "Amen, m'dude! Amen."
I may be optimistic on more than one occasion, but I wholeheartedly agree here. Delisting ALL of these classics (and probably making any future "re-releases" harder to ahem.. "restore health" to..) is absolutely NOT the way.
They could at the very least keep the bundles up, and at the most, like you said, make them not cost people a dime since they seem bent on doing what the others seem to do. We know they're able to do better than this, it does NOT have to be this way, older versions CAN co-exist with the newer versions.
Like the Sonic Bundle they put together, they could make this work, by doing what has helped them back on their feet: listening to the pain and suffering voiced by their fans, instead of closing their ears and becoming the incarnations of their worst rivals and even most heated enemies.
SEGA needs to STOP. Stop, and realize, "Is this the right way? Should we do this...? Will it be worth it in the long run.....? Will our fans still care.........?"
Older peeps like us, and even younger folks in their 20's (who I'm thankful for having reached out to me, made some way past cool friends from good community outreach!), we've done our share of homework, and we still love to play, and when it comes to good games that actually push things to the next level, we play SEGA games, like Crazy Taxi!
Losing so many of these culturally significant cornerstones of not only our childhood but also ignoring us and even outright denying the younger crowd and prospective fans ways to enjoy things as the were is just plain AWFUL. They could be doing AWESOME, maybe even CRAZY levels of cool stuff, but... What are they doin' now?!?
Also, SUPER BIG Thanks for the shout-out to the community and showcasing some of it's best work! Means a lot to all the fans of SEGA games and Crazy Taxi fans alike. We gotta be heard, else there's no chance of getting it right! Right? RIGHT!
Let's stay strong, keep rockin' on, keep goin' fast, have all the fun we can, and hope for the best!
~VV~
Your guide in the forum is an absolute Godsend!!!
Im hoping that Sega re-lists these classic titles in new compilations. It's just mind-boggling that some of these big gaming companies don't want to preserve their legacy titles. Luckily, the gaming community is doing just that.
I wanted to buy Crazy Taxi but of course was waiting until it went on sale or until I had the money to buy it in the bundle of other classic Dreamcast titles.
Guess that's out the window now.
At this point, emulation is a valid option! The dreamcast version is still the best and most complete one anyway :D
This is why PC gaming needs to rely more on physical media again, rejoining with consoles in the glory of having a game to keep on a disc forever without risk of removal.
Otherwise… start archiving and start sailing.
Welcome to the club crazy taxi fans, y'all can sit next to the jet set radio fans
For what it’s worth though, i often liked to oblige Mr. X at the end of Streets of Rage… :D
The thing with Crazy Taxi isn't so much that it's not "uncool" or anything like that, it's more that it's a primitive arcade game that only a certain generation of people know about, and even then there are dozens of other arcade games from that era when Crazy Taxi released which are probably more popular and are probably from more well-recognized franchises. Add to the fact that there were only three games in the series and that they aren't very accessible to play except for the first game.
Keep in mind that the game is more-or-less like any mobile game when you compare them since it has a specific gameplay loop of earning a high score by driving customers around an open city map and not having much else to do after that. This isn't a slight against the game, since it is a great game, but other games from that era that released like the Sonic games on the Dreamcast are definitely more known about with younger and older generations still to this day.
Redream and Crazy Taxi ISO it is, then?
That explains why everybody didn't feel right when the Sonic and Shadow Generations game came out on the Switch.
Seems that they want to bury their past.
So glad I have 20tb of retro gaming roms pc micro pc ALL home systems ps3 and under.
They can quit making games and I'm good..😂😂😂
Man I loved Sega because of the Mega Drive like Toy Story on the Mega Drive will always still be revolutionary for 1995 16 bit games.
The version of Crazy Taxi they are delisting is kind of crappy. It doesn't have the original sound track, the swearing has been removed and for some reason it plays poorly. I am not beat up that the game is being pulled.
If and when the new CT comes out and its chock full of microtransactions and a live service, then I have no problems keeping my money in my pocket.
not every gaming company or dev team is your best friend even though they seem like it
never trusting no company as a pirate who sails the vast oceans
I stand in solidarity with Kris on this! I love video games of all types. I want a world where retro games will be preserved and respected for their history.❤
I knew sooner or later all this would be happening, I'm glad I stockpiled on roms/emulators.
I'm sure Sega is going to give us another classics collection I know there was some issues with this last collection. Especially, on the console versions of the last version.
This has to be the reason why BagofTotinos always talks about fighting SEGA on Pso2
No that just all Video Games Companies Sega is just catching up what Video Games Companies are doing now
SEGA have been the villains for almost a year now, dont know why people are suddenly surprised, ive been saying it all year and have been told to accept mediocrity and greed and trying nothing new in their games, got thrown ableist slurs and got told to "Quit Sonic Already", all because i criticised Sonic X Shadow Generations and that disgusting ihop situation from April where they hijacked Sonic Superstars rotting corpse from not being marketed whatsoever just to make pancake money, but when i said im angry they have turned into this and want my childhood characters as actual characters and positive role models and not brand promoters and not wanting children to be taught only money and spending on their products matters, i just got angrily harrassed by everyone
Once again, this isnt new, the Sonic iHop DLC, Sonic Dream Team, Sonic X Shadow Generations atrocious changes, the erasure of Amys character to please toxic misogynist fanboys for extra money, delisting the original Generations and taking down ROM Sites that included their games, Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble just being a Fortnite clone instead of the Monkey Ball 3D and Banana Splitz Sequel people wanted, this year has been SEGAs absolute worst by far
I don't disagree, I didn't even cover every example of Sega's quiet shenanigans here, in 2010 they also pulled a bunch of "lower scoring" sonic games from physical retail shelves too. But this move just hits different. The genesis collection was a way to acquire a huge pile of sega roms 100% legally.
That, coupled with the sacking of Vimm's Lair in June has drawn a line in the sand so to speak and Sega is clearly on the side of Nintendo and their Ilk now.
I'm real sorry about that bro. You did not deserve that. So many just gotta be toxic and too narrow-minded.
I myself have not been too fond of them for the longest time. It's very sad to see what has become of them.
All these remakes completely ruin the aesthetic appeal that made the originals fun. They look like bad western titles from the Xbox.
11:20 What are the clowns from?
I have a very strong feeling that they're setting up for a new collection with the inclusion of Dreamcast titles packaged in, especially as evident by the Vimm's Lair takedowns, however the cynic in me also feels that might have be more of a *service* instead of a typical game pack.
Reason being that because the Crazy Taxi & JSR remakes are basically being ads for their more bigger live service companion pieces, having people easily going back to a one time purchase game is going to hurt any potental ongoing profits of those live services. So to counter that, having the classic games itself be a service would be put in place to gain recurrent revenue.
It just seems like such a typical corporate move to do, but something so believable due to seeing this type of behaviour before.
However like those live-service reboots, I also don't see this service working out as a lot of these games are niche legacy that isn't Sonic, something many newcomers will likely ignore and legacy fans refusing to touch a less inferior way to play those titles.
Either way this is a lose-lose situation.
I can say thanks to Sega for putting several Like a Dragon games on GOG. Yeah Nintendo never going to do that.
really need to grab this and jet set radio before its delisted
I loved this, well thought out topics, funny clips, professionally edited, everything described with clarity. For an additional platform of your own outside of ESO's I'd say your on par with another great TH-camr/ Gamer/ and Political Opinionator RAZORFIST! ❤
I enjoyed this content very much! ❤
Great video !!! I agree with all you say !!!
You’re right! As a regular (somewhat) competitive player, I’m not interested in the online version. I don’t have the time nor patience to keep up with the leaderboards. I’m ready for the remaster though, as long as it’s the same game with licensed content or even new licensed locations. Add a Blockbuster or Retro Game store etc but keeping the same play style.
^ that's gonna be key for the remake. It's gotta feel the same, play the same. And hellll yes to new licenced locations, I'd LOVE to see the companies that still exist remain in their locations (KFC, Pizza Hut etc) But perhaps turn the now defunct Tower Records location into some other current store. Unlikely to happen though.
Get all the roms for any classic system BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!
Been saying this for years, just because ypu upload it online dosent mean you have the rom either as evident from the recent internet archive shutdown that happened..
Every rom I needed is on that site, never even thought would would happen if they got shut down..
It will never be too late. For every rom they remove, a thousand nerds have a copy on their computer and will inevitably upload them again for people to use.
They’re getting ready to launch a service that will let you stream play all these games. It’ll be called the Sega Channel and will be on all platforms.
I just want Sega to make another video game console its been a fucking long time thanks to Nintendo and internal sabotage killing every chance of Sega making another video game console
"Stream" So... Not installed on my PC?
@@HighrollinhunterHonestly, it's too late at this point. Consoles are starting to die. They're becoming more expensive, the barrier to entry for PC has gotten really low, and people are starting to realize that PC offers way more freedom. Sega's last chance at a new console was maybe 10 years ago.
some people don't like renting their games. witch is basically what saga channel sounds like it is . paying monthly to play games that is the definition of renting. companies launching streaming platforms consumer ya im ok paying monthly for the content i want to watch.i hope they give you a choice always.
Man, I hope people aren’t conditioned to play streamed games. I put my nephews onto the good stuff, so they’re safe, but I assume kids being born now are kinda fugged in that regard.
What's also infuriating is that Sega doesn't even acknowledge their older arcade games. There are so many arcade games that have yet to appear on modern consoles, and if certain arcade games had A Genesis port, you're more than likely to get the Genesis port. Also, if Sega is gonna reboot their games, they shouldn't pretend that the original versions never existed. Just like how they pretend that arcade versions of games ported to The Genesis never existed.
Isn't that version of Crazy Taxi without the original OST? I'm good with my Dreamcast copy of CT 1&2, but feel free to re-release 3 on modern systems.
Bruh I used to champion Sega as the last remaining game studio that cared, now they're no better than Nintendo
"Sega does what Nintendont" aged horribly
I actually worry there wont be a Sonic Hacking Contest for 2025, they seem to be all-in on the erasure of their own past at this point.
My guess is they will just put them all in a monthly subscription which will likely fail miserably.
Never played the game but absolutely heard of its massive success
They're probably just going to repackage again.
It makes no sense to delist these games. If they want to create newer for more money they should just make the new game and leave the older games be
I think most people engages with live services in the wrong way. Either that, or the only live service game I've ever played (the First Descendant) is wildly different from the rest, I don't know, you tell me. I didn't had to do any grinding.
I completed the first season and by the end of it my character was maxed out naturally, without having to grind. When the next season comes I'll upgrade another character.
I spent zero, in fact I felt a bit guilty, but that's how these games work. I didn't make the rules.
the delisting of both mean bean machine and kid chameleon is a heavy and devestating blow to games preservation. 😔
ristar fans cannot handle this pain.
Hey Ristar is a banger to be fair :D
@@Kattatonia all the more reason as to why the delisting hurts

Great video Kris and agree 100% with your outlook.
Stop killing games we need you to boycott Sega please
I remember the original crazy taxi is free to play on Google Play store
My android phone broke 5 years ago
This is saddening… Guess I’ll have to use my real aging genesis again.
Sega was my last hope…
Sega, how could you?
Also don't foget the Steam version of Sonic Generations got Sonic 1 patched out, while if you own a physical release of Sonic generations on xbox 360 or ps3, you can play Sonic 1 in the game.
And they even kept sonic 1 out of the newly sonic x shadow generations as well.
Just one more reason why Physical is king.
Not only that, I only mentioned the most notable cases in the video since Sonic 1 was still part of genesis classics when it was removed from generations, but there was another time in 2010 when Sega actually pulled a bunch of "low scoring" sonic games from physical media retail. www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24235/sega-removing-low-scoring-sonic-titles-from-retail
Their journey to the dark side started a while ago.
It's because of shit like this, and how bad the games industry has gotten over the last 13 years, that I just want to take matters into my own hands and put things right!
If Sega were to make me their new boss next week, I'd get to work on a new console, to compensate for how bad the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been, I'd do more to make classic titles easily available, even games based on licensed properties like Mickey Mouse and Spider Man, and just play my part in making gaming fun again!
Bro retroarch is still on steam 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Those 55 genesis roms wont be after december 6th though.
SEGA went from one of the most based companies to one of the worst.
The thing is most of the good people who use to run Sega are now gone. Even Atlus is not the same as they use to be.
I'm ok I got the DC copy, the PS2 version and the game installed on PS3 and xbox 360.
Great analysis. Dude if they ever make a new Gamesmaster and need a new Patrick Moore character you're the guy
I don't think anyone could replace Sir Pat, Maybe David Attenborough but he's 98 I think!
This was fantastic
100,000+ games for £60 notes?... Forever?..... 👍
Thank you for mentioning vimm's lair
I am sick of games that do not need to be online in the first place become live service garbage.
^ This right here! We play a lot of Elder Scrolls Online on this channel, it's live service, a big MMO with a big staff making regular big content updates. It's been live service from the get-go like other MMO's and I knew what I was signing up for by playing and getting invested. But now we live in a world where even single player games are trying to do what MMO's do and that is just plain mental for a one and done game.
Honestly you can buy hard drives off of Amazon with thousands of games on them and the emulators to play them. Every game Sega just de-listed will be included.
okay but they are removing one of the most generous ways of purchasing legal roms, and additionally decent pc ports of dreamcast games. its bad for history.
also those drives are scams source your own roms bruh
Why would you buy them off amazon on hard drives? You can literally get them free off any piracy site. The people selling the Hard Drives also downloaded them there.
Same with the emulators.
Its impossible to fully delist all emulators and roms for a console unless its from the current decade.
Don't buy rom collections. Just find them yourself, they're everywhere. Just because one or two popular rom sites go down doesn't mean the roms are impossible to find. It's absurdly easy to find an alternative.
@ lol I did source my own ROMs, straight from Amazon! Not a scam btw. I bought the 2 TB model that looks like a cassette tape from Jeff Bezos’ website. Of course there is some jank with the built in emulators, but you can just use it as a regular hard drive and use your own emulators.
Buying a hard drive off Amazon with a bunch of questionable stuff preinstalled is just asking for trouble. Plus, why spend money on that when you can do it yourself? It's way safer to do it yourself, too.
Mit dieser Aktion seitens Sega besteht die Möglichkeit das Sega das nächste Sega wird?!
Question is, will they give refunds? Or better yet do you own what you paid for?
At least they arent doing what Ubisoft is doing
Maybe they planning something its a bit too early to know imo
Maybe its related to that crazy taxi mmo thing but it could be a coincidence for all we know
Never mind I thought you meant sega already became a villain so disregard this comment: )
Knew they would become like law breaking Nintendo one day (Nintendo abuses U. S copyright law)
Them being strict on the usage of copyrights for their IPs doesn't mean they break any law, after all those IPs are theirs. Just cause you can't use em doesn't mean they violate your right. You can still choose to make a Legend of Zelda game, just don't call it The Legend of Zelda. Remember there's a Metroid game and a Streets of Rage game that are not made by Nintendo or Sega which are fantastic but they are not call Metroid or Streets of Rage, instead they are called Axiom Verge and The Takeover respectively.
how did you put on your tinfoil hat and *Not* think they might- IDK be working on a new collection of dreamcast and genesis games? You literally brought up sonic origins in your argument and that would be a similar case
Even if they release a new collection it will be the same stripped down version that's on steam without the original soundtrack. We can at least mod all that back in with the current standalone version. And the Genesis collection contains the actual roms that can be played on any emulator you like, making that collection a way to get those roms legally. You can be certain any new collection won't be giving us that again, the war on emulation is real.
@@Kattatoniacommercial Emulation is still Emulation

So people were actually dumb enough to pay for all those half-assed ports and shitty crap emulators (i saw that shit emulator they used for the Mega Drive set on Steam, it had so many sync, audio, framerate and accuracy issues it was hilariously inept and basically unplayable), instead of grabbing proper emulators from the homebrew scene and the roms for free off the web? 🤣 Stupidity truly knows no boundaries.
You know that the genesis collection gave you access to the roms so you could use them in an emulator of your choice, right?
The nice thing about the steam genesis collection wasn't the emulator, which is pretty flawed as you pointed out, it was that the rom files were completely unencrypted so you could use them for any emulator you want. It also had workshop support which legitimized rom hacks. Selling unencrypted roms is something we should encourage companies to do even if most people just pirate them instead
