    Hey Elliot, I think you can make the Japanese n64’s region free by installing a 3d printed bracket or one from a pal console into the cartridge slot. Apparently they didn’t make the consoles region locked, just the slot that the game cartridge goes into

    • @RetrostalgiaOfficial
      @RetrostalgiaOfficial ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Edit: I think this only works for US games, not PAL region

      definitely NOT pal games

    • @leatherhidegaming
      @leatherhidegaming ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can confirm this works. The only difference between Japanese and US N64 consoles is the cartridge slot on the inside. There are no region settings between NTSC.

    Since both Japan and the US use NTSC, there has been an extremely simple cartridge slot mod made recently. The only difference between games published in Japan and the USA is the little notches in the back of the cart which align with the notches in the cartridge slot. The mod that has been released is the cartridge slot with the notches removed allowing plug-in-play of games on either system. The mod requires a 4.5 mm game bit to open the console, and a Phillips screwdriver to remove the plastic slot that has the notches. Replace the plastic slot with the one that makes the N64 region free (Japan and USA only). Then reverse the process to reassemble the system.

    I have the clear red version of this console, it's beautiful. As for the power supply, there is no problem in plugging in a UK power supply into your Japanese N64. The UK power supply will take in the UK mains voltage and output to the console, the same voltage that the Japanese PSU would output to the console when taking in JPN mains voltage. So the difference between the two PSUs is the voltage that they expect to receive from the wall plug.

    I remember my first N64, a Pokemon one with Pokemon Stadium and not one but two Pokemon controllers... unboxing it was like opening the holy grail... epic machine that caused a major rift with the missus when it broke as she whilst I was out chucked it in the bins and the council had emptied 'em before I got back with a new power supply as it was only that which had broken. She tried to make amends by buying another lesser plain black one but me heart had gone out of it and bought a PSone and a Dreamcast and I punished her by not allowing her to play either for weeks :(

    I put LED's into my Lik-Sang cased Gamecube, which is a clear dark purple full size disc case. It was fairly easy and just had to find a suitable point to take off for the voltages for the LED's, the voltage draw was so minimal I was able to draw off of something handy without impeding the GC's use and it did look pretty funky. Was weird that I mod chipped it and never got round to actually using jolly roger discounted stuff on it, the only full size disc I did use was my Linux bootloader disc as like the N64, the GC was capable of acting as a very low power 'puter. I was on the team of the Dreamcast's Linux stuff for a while, man I doubt today I could code coherently in basic let alone raw code I used to have in me head back then :S

    4:55 Yes, you can use a local PSU with a console for Japan. Did that with my Japanese N64 as well. I also removed the cartridge slot and replaced it with a generic one (3D printed), so that I can also use this N64 to play NTSC-U games, not only NTSC-J (as I am also from PAL land :D ).
    Without modifying the console with a hardware mod, you will only get Composite or S-Video out of this N64, sadly. With a mod, you can use a RGB cable and/or a cable like the RAD2X, which will even use RGB if the console is modded (otherwise it will fall back to S-Video as well).

    • @trevor245
      @trevor245 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually made sense back in the day for consoles to be region locked as there are differences in the way the tvs worked back in the day. However Since the US and Japan both use a 60 hertz power signal you can actually play American N64 games on a Japanese console as long as you modify the cartridge slot iirc.

    Agreed that modern consoles are pretty boring, but nintendo's always been more colorful than Sony and Microsoft. I always find myself decorating my playstations in some manner. PS2 has a giant Jack Sparrow decal on it. PS3 had a bloody zombie handprint. PS4 has a t. rex skeleton on it. I'm looking at somehow fixing a Seto Kaiba head to my ps5 because I find that meme hysterical.
