Jerry Herman had a tremendous impact on my life, and gave me the gift of musical appreciation. We will not see his like again, I'm afraid. So glad I was lucky enough to live the years I did so closely attached to his incredible talent. Thank you, Jerry!
Omg, Carol, Mathew, both Christines, Laura, Sutton, Kelli , Chitta and ANGELA, could this GET ANY BETTER this was a WELL DESERVED tribute to one of the most amazing broadway creators of all time, absolutely loved it ❤️
One of the biggest thrills of my life was performing in the title role of Auntie Mame in a college production of Jerry Herman's "Mame." Thank you Mr. Herman!
I never tire of listening to Jerry’s music. He and Sondheim are my favorite Broadway composers. They are diametrically opposed in their approach to Bway music, but that is exactly why I revere them both. Sondheim makes me flex my musical muscles, and Jerry makes me dance and sing out loud right in my living room. Who could ask for anything more?
What a treat seeing Channing, Landsbury and Revera still going strong. And I was knocked out by that Matthew Morrison as a song and dance man. His character on 'Glee' is so wishy-washy I had no idea he was THIS talented.
A well deserved tribute to a genius of musical theater! His songs will last forever and another day or two to boot! I think that the song "Hello Dolly" is the one Broadway show tune that virtually everyone on the entire planet knows. (the best version was sung by Barbra in the film, especially the duet with Louis Armstrong)💫
The first song by Jerry Herman I ever listened to was We Need A Little Christmas when Daffy Duck sings it. Then ten years ago, the first time I heard a snippet of Hello Dolly was in Wall E. Back in 2012, I saw La Cage on tour with Christopher Sieber as Albin and George Hamilton as Georges.
STAR VOYAGER: There are better renditions of the title song than the miscast Barbra Streisand. But the only value in the $28,800,000 film was Louis Armstrong.
It was so beautiful and touching to see children come out on the stage singing "I am what I am". Teaches the younger generation higher self-esteem especially the LGBT youth.
s qadeer I first saw La Cage Aux Folles as a recent high graduation. At the time, i slowly accepted my brother as a lesibian. And i love I Am What I Am
Good ol' Carol Channing will be singing "Hello, Dolly" until they lay her in the ground, and perhaps even then she won't be through. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse, we can expect another revival with Carol.
So much deep creation by writing his own music so marevelous. Thanks Jerry who will lives forever in the heart of the Musicals. Thanks for those Musical people who may continue through the years the singing of those wonderful songs by JERRY HERMAN
You wouldn't need more than two hands to count the number of people who have contributed as much to musicals as Jerry Herman. They didn't even touch on Mame. So deserving of recognition. Thank you for posting this. ❤
My favorite parts were It Only Takes A Moment from Hello Dolly and the finale with I Am What I Am and The Best of Times from La Cage Aux Folles. Kudos to Rob Ashford’s chreography
Music and the amazing artists who write and perform with an intensity that melts time my most recent performance gave me that timeless gift all my years converged in that moment I love i
Sometimes when I watch these videos I haven't heard of these people but I find it very entertaining but I love a show even though it's NYC AND BROADWAY
things that need to happen because of this video: Christine Ebersole as Mame and Christine Baranski as Vera in a revival of "Mame" Laura Benanti as Mabel in a revival of "Mack and Mabel"
Richard Mayora Oh well. I’m still seeing Hello Dolly regardless. Ebersole would have been more exciting for me since I saw her as Mrs Rich in Richie Rich.
Everyone should see this too appreciate the genius of music and Musical Theatre! Freeze @ 10.03 just too see how enormous Carol Channing's mouth is lol!!
So great! I was wondering where Angela was. So many excellent Roses. Overall I like Angela's take on the character (plus I saw her in it pre Broadway) but Tyne's "turn" rules
I am cognitive of the fact that Mr. Herman has contributed greatly to musical theatre in the USA and deserved the honor he received that evening. However, after watching this video several times, it would seem to me that he is unaware of the honor being given to him. His facial expression barely changed. He was completely unexcited. Yes, Sondheim got it way before he did and was the true "genius" of the theatre, but he might have shown some excitement, even if he was nearing the end of his life after having lived with his illness for some decades. Some glint of joy? Maybe? Performances were wonderful, though, and poor Carol Channing being taken out of mothballs for an event to sing 2 lines from Herman's biggest show, "Hello, Dolly"! Anyway....good day.
@@dannybex - You've lost your memory, one!? ... "Lend an Ear", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ", "The Vamp", "Show Girl", "Hello, Dolly" , "Lorelei" - She has possibly performed more upon the stage than any living actor today or ever. She was nomintated and/or won 6 Tony Awards, a Grammy Award, an Oliver Award, Golden Globe Award, Academy Award, etc. LONG overdue for this honor!
Your claim that she's 'possibly performed more upon the stage than any living actor today or ever' is not only laughable, but beside the point. One doesn't become a Kennedy Center honoree because of the number of performances they've given, but instead the range and quality of those performances. She did get and probably deserved the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. My original point remains the same -- she is only remembered for 'Hello Dolly'. If it weren't for that major role, she'd have been forgotten long, long ago.
This was when the presidency had class and dignity. Trump has thrown all of this out the window. It's about the country experiencing dignity, grace and joy to balance daily trials and tribulations. The Trump family doesn't know this level of class. Donald Trump would tear down the Winter Garden Theatre and the Kennedy Center itself if he thought he could make a buck by putting up something that had his name on it. We will have the last laugh if we survive. Thank God we can look back on these fabulous performances at the KC with fond and joyous memories.
mikenpensacola That’s why I DVRed the Kennedy Center Honors five years in a row for the honorees and the Obamas. The last one I saw in its entirety however was 2015.
11 years after your comment was made, l scrolled through the comments hoping someone came to the same conclusion l did watching it today. Huzzah! It's never too late!
Look at the obvious disappointment on Herman's face at the finale of this "retrospective". You mean they couldn't (or wouldn't) put men on the stage to sing and dance the La Cage numbers. What are they afraid of? And what a disappointment for viewers as well. Boo, hiss Kennedy Center.
That's the wonderful Washington DC Gay Men's Chorus singing behind Angela in the tribute finale, The Best of Times is Now. And at 9:20 Mr. JH touches his heart and smiles in recognition.
Having watched this again... these background dancers are just terrible. I don't know if they were just hired that afternoon or not but they are not together it's as if the choreographer said well if you want to raise your hand fine and if you want to bend this way okay. Especially weather dancing with Matthew Morrison that's a great example of how off they are. It just looks like a mob moving Any Which Way.
I dislike Jerry Herman, and his (at least seemingly) aloof demeanor during this amazing medley of his work by some incredible performers, further reaffirms my negative sentiments about him. That being said, he's written some of musical theater's most memorable songs and this medley was fantastic! Some of these performers... WOW!
@@dennrb6640MK I am probably older than you dear and have been seeing Broadway shows for half a century and these tributes have enough time to not have dance steps from a junior high production of The Music Man. This celebration is for the best of the best. There is no excuse for such shitty choreography.

The fact that this man brings out legends of the musical theatre says a lot.

Three of the, arguably, top five female broadway performers in history holding hands and singing... amazing.
Sometimes I wish I can take a time machine back to when Chita was Anita in West Side Story, Angela was Mame and Carol was Dolly.
Evilqueen1985 May Carol RIP
And those three Channing, Rivera and Lansbury? Who are the other two?
I'm so happy for so many reasons, including, but not limited to, Carol, Chita, Christine squared and Angela.

So much talent on one stage. A feast.

Ewww. I don’t do Zombies. But I rather just take a time machine and go back to the 60’s.
Bravo! Loved every bit of this tribute with the very best songs! I absolutely adore Angela Lansbury!

They sang Bosom Buddies from Mame.
And Its Today
Loved 'em all but Laura was my fave performer! Great tribute to a fantastic man!
I just adore Angela lansbury. She dresses so classy and age appropriate. She speaks so well.. And she's still working.
s qadeer I will not forget seeing her as the Balloon Lady last year in Mary Poppins Returns
THIS IS ART !!!
THIS IS MUSICAL ART IN THE HIGHEST LEVEL !!!
Angela, Carol and Chita, just WOW!!!!😊
A GREAT TRIBUTE TO A GENIUS , JERRY HERMAN . SIMPLY WONDERFUL
The only show of his I saw was La Cage Aux Folles. But I do hope to see Hello Dolly on its upcoming national tour

Am I the only one disappointed no one sang "I've Never Said I Love You"? It's one of my favorites as a soprano and I love singing it for cabarets.
Sutton Foster's pure childlike joy cheering in the end is fantastic!

Break my heart. Ebersole was the superior choice.
Richard Mayora Oh well. I’m still seeing Hello Dolly regardless. Ebersole would have been more exciting for me since I saw her as Mrs Rich in Richie Rich.
Christine Baranski has played Mame in an.. Encores production, I'm fairly certain! Well, I know she played it, where the production was I am unsure.
Magnificent rest in peace Jerry!!
A marveleus cast for a great composer Dame Angela,Channing,Rivera,Morrison.O Hara, Foster.....well great artists.
Love Christine Ebersole! Wish she'd gotten to show off her voice a bit more.

Where is the Mame revival with the two Christines?
@CoSAscuff Baranski did a mame revival but it was at the lincoln center, not on broadway.
How has Carol Channing not been given the Kennedy Center Honor yet?
Eunice Beatrice Braga - Excellent question!?! ... we've been petitioning for decades for that to happen!
Her accomplishments are very limited compared to other recipients who have a much larger body of work?
Because she was only in one hit show. One.

Amazing medly BUT how could they not include Mame? Mame is probobly Hermans third most famous song. Pitty.
They performed "Bosom Buddies" from 'Mame.'
Who ' s the lady behind Diana Ross ?
@Dirkdebruyne actually if u notice he seems stonefaced b/c it looks as if he's about to cry
I LOVE Carol Channing. Unfortunately, starting with Carol wasn’t too smart - she was the best part.
Who was the guy with the hat?
Mc Kenna That’s country singer Merle Haggard
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
wow, that "Time heals everything" was underwhelming
MrDuffmann22 sadly, i have to agree 😢
Decided to check this out after seeing the new film CAROL CHANNING - LARGER THAN LIFE. No offense but Jerry's tribute should've been gayer than that!
Shame to see Carol Channing being propped up and then ushered off stage left.
I think he is sitting stone faced because he has had work done and his face won't move any more

Long Live Jerry. It is so sad, that he have AIDS

Michael Hewinson Now he has left us
I would prefer Barbra instead of Carol, I know... I know that Carol is the real Dolly Levy but Barbra has better voice
I don’t have a preference since I only saw Barbra as Dolly
They did show clips of the film with Streisand earlier in the tribute.
I hope Betty Buckley will be good as Dolly when the show goes on tour.
Would it have killed him to smile?
agreed
Botox
