Fun fact: Appearing in over 150 theatrically released films and shorts, Donald has the record for most theatrical appearances for a Disney character and he is the most published non-superhero comic book character in the world.
Isn't it weird how Disney owns the rights the Howard the Duck after the Marvel buyout? Think about it, Howard the Duck started out as Marvel's rip-off of Donald Duck's comic books, and now Disney owns the rights to their own rip-off. I know Howard can stand on his own, and he's not like a poorly made rip-off, but what a time to be alive where weird things like that can happen, right?

Though I would argue the cartoon Donald Duck is a separate character from the movie Donald Duck. For instance he can talk without any speech impediment.

It would seem in the case of many of these cartoons the kids parents died and the aunt or uncle inherited him/her/them.
According to the nephews backstory, their hijinks ultimately killed their father (or just sent him tragically to the hospital), and pre2017 Ducktales had their mom, Della, send the nephews to live with their Uncle Donald for a while. 2017 Ducktales “solved mysteries and rewrote history,” by having young Donald and Della live with their Uncle Scrooge for the very same reason.

@@UmmYeahOk Yeah, in the original comic strip Della sent them to Donald with a letter explaining that they had accidentally put their father in the hospital by setting off fireworks under his chair, and that she was going to come pick them up as soon as he got out. The nephews were only supposed to be around temporarily, but people liked them so much that they became a permanent fixture, so Della just never came back for them.
Do "The Last Hungry Cat" where Sylvester believes that he finally killed and ate Tweety, and then gradually feels guilty about it until he's reduced to crying on the floor, all narrated by an Alfred Hitchcock parody.

Suggestion: Donald's Dilemma.
A blow to the head gives Donald a fantastic singing voice. He becomes a instant star, forgetting all about Daisy. Daisy ends up having a mental break down to the point where she attempts suicide several times. Those particular scenes were eventually edited out.
Daisy tries and tries to see Donald, but continually fails. She ends up seeing a psychiatrist.
That one Donald cartoon where his nephews prank him by dressing up as zombies is pretty dark too. I don't know the name of it, but it was in House Of Villains.

I always thought it was because kids are more likely to see parents as lame and not cool. Meanwhile everybody seems to have that cool aunt or uncle.

There were a few single dads in the cartoon verse during that time though. Sylvester had a son and so did Auggie Doggie Daddy.
I always though that Donald died at the end with the fall, but his anger is soooo powerfull that he get out of hell and try to bring the boys with him xD
There is more episodes of Donald “teaching” the boys a lesson like making them smoke cigars when he thought they were smoking but it was a gift for him.

That's actually not that bad. Birds eat each other all the time. It would only be bad if they were eating another duck...although they might get some dirty looks from Clara Cluck.
I recommend "Mickey's Garden", it freaked me out a bit as a kid as someone who's afraid of bugs. In it, Mickey and Pluto shrink after spraying some pesticide trying to kill the bugs in Mickey's garden. The bugs then get drunk on Bug poison. It has some pretty creepy imagery and the idea of bugs trying to kill you when they're bigger than you is freaky as hell.. So .... Yeah
OMG! YES!!!! That cartoon was so creepy, it made me wanna kill some bugs!
That thing is a nightmarish fever dream!
The part where Donald wiggles his fingers just before losing consciousness never fails to make me laugh.

5:00 i usedo to had some theories about why only nephews and nieces
1) they didn’t want to imply that the characters had sex and keep a more Innocent look on them
2) because around that time because of the release of the divorce law most people were having divorces so they didn’t want to show a full happy family while the homes were broken
3) just to keep the status quo
I always figured it was so in shorts and stuff without the kids people would assume it was because they were with their parents.
4) The children don't have to make constant appearance.
When Doug brought that up I immediately thought of divorce because it was a taboo subject at that time. Though there are some Golden Age cartoon characters that are exceptions like Sylvester and Spike that actually have children and have no significant others.

@@TwilightLink77 It's from a Humphrey Bear and Donald Duck short called "Grin and Bear it." The park ranger points to this sign when rattling off all the rules at the park to the tourists. It simply means "Don't bother the bears" but these days, "Molest" has a darker meaning.
Ranger: "So Humphrey, now show us on this doll where Mr. Duck has touched you"

It actually reminds me of this one time when my sister tried to convince me I'm dead. She pretended that she didn't see me and talked to our cat of "my death". I was about nine years old, but helplessly naive due to my (yet undiagnosed) autism. Years later when I reminded her of this, she was appalled of her own behaviour. :D

I don't know why, but I think several episodes of "Pingu" could fit the bill for this series. Specifically, "Pingu Runs Away" or "Pingu's Dream". An outlandish idea, I know.

Heck, I've seen chickens run our dogs away from leftover fried chicken so they could eat it. Birds don't give a damn where their protein comes from.
"Truant Office Donald" elaborates on that, and you should see it and be even more horrified.
Thats not dark, eagles and other raptors eat other birds all the time, it's like saying it's dark when we eat pork because we are mammals eating one of our kind.

I remember a meme where the turkey Donald is cooking is actually the 4th nephew who misbehaved. That adds a whole new level of dark when you think of how the others are fighting to eat their own brother.
I watched this when i was 6 and i loved this episode, didnt scared me at all, thought it was hilarious.
My favorite bit is after he turns into a devil, the pitchfork he grabs immediately turns bright red as well.
Man, this was one of few Disney moments that actually terrified me as a child. Watching it again as a full adult, I'm just laughing how silly it was.
You definitely should do one about "Donald's Crime" and "Donald's Day Off", they really fit the trope.
My favorite Donald Duck & Nephews cartoon was the one where Donald had a gas station and the boys had a garage with a hot rod. They used a cardboard cutout of the Super Va-Room V8 to con Donald out of gas.
Right off the Snyder Cut, and into a Dark Toons episode. Life is good.

@@ProfessorUniverse95 All of the origin scenes with Flash and Cyborg. I never saw the theatrical cut, but I can tell this was a lot more substantial than whatever was there. I also loved SPOILERS BELOW
the final battle sequence. Every character got moments of kickassery, and Superman pummeling Steppenwolf while Flash goes Speed-Force was amazing. The shot before the epilogue with the League was so satisfying, knowing what it took to get this cut released. I really hope they go forward with a second, since there's a pretty big loose end.

He looks nothing like that South American species (Lophonetta speculariodes). However if you are referring to the white breed of domestic Mallard known as crested duck, then yes, he does share a resemblance. I always thought he was a Peking Duck, another pale breed of domesticated Mallard.

I myself remember this Donald Duck cartoon, and I actually loved it for how funny it is. Although, I didn't really see how dark and messed-up it was of Hewy, Dewy, and Louis to make Donald think he died until years later. And all because Donald tried to make them wash themselves up before dinner.
Hewy, Dewy, and Louis were such little shits! LOL!
Nevertheless, I still love this Donald Duck cartoon. Although, I first remember seeing it on a old Disney special called "Kids is Kids" involving Professor Ludwig Von Drake. This one was on it. In some scenes, I always think of Ludwig Von Drake added comments in the angel like "Goodbye, sucker!", "An angel? He'll never get in." and "Yikes! TIMBER!!!!". LOL! Oh, what get memories!
I really wish I had grown up with it. I've watched PLENTY of old great cartoons; and still do because of Toon in with ME, but that one escaped my radar. I'm so glad you shared this because now I'll have to look it up later. Thanks Doug. 😊

I dunno, a LOT of Daffy/Porky cartoons end with Porky losing his shit and exacting brutal revenge of Daffy for all the bullshit he did to him. And Bugs/Daffy cartoons are never kind to Daffy.
Donald cartoons generally feel meaner since Donald is nowhere near as big a dick as Daffy and rarely deserves most of the crap that happens to him, though.
Hey Doug, I highly recommend taking a look at Danny Phantom "The Ultimate Enemy." I would really love to hear your thoughts on it. It is easily the darkest episode in the entire series.
Danny Phantom is an action cartoon that was aimed at teens and pre-teens, not little kids.

I haven't seen this Cartoon in at least a 20 Years.
This was the very first Donald Duck Cartoon I've ever seen over here in Germany.
It had a very lasting Impact on me and my Brother, since we both fell in Love with Donald Duck and the entire Duck-Family.
It was one of the first VHS-Cassettes we got from our Neighbor about 1997 or 1998. I actually don't remember if this was dubbed english or german, since we did not understand a single Word - it's Donald after all. Yet we still got what happened and we loved it.
To us it was not that dark, since we both did not know Donald Duck and had nothing to compare it to, and - as I said - we grew up in Germany.
Ever read a traditional german Fairytail or Kids-Story? They're so bloody and so messed up, you'll love'em. As Children however, they'll scar you for life. If you wonder, why many Germans have no humor at all - that's why! We've got all humanity and Emotions sucked out of our Souls as Children and are left behind dull burocrats. Very sad!
Anyways: I really enjoy of your Dark Toon Episodes and espacially this one! It brought back a lot of long gone Memories - some should have been gone, but you can't always get what you want - still, thank you very much!

Absolute favorite Donald short! Not gonna lie, that last shot when he gets back home is me when my nephews act up!
There is a cartoon within the House of Mouse that combines the elements of Donald’s Off Day and Soup’s On, where Mickey makes Huey, Dewey, and Louie feel sick and then later on made them all feel like that they died.
I just wonder why the cartoon's called "Soup's On" when they're eating turkey.
It's just a saying that means food is being prepared, not necessarily soup.

Soup's on has always been one of my favorite Donald Duck shorts most because of the train scene which made me laugh a lot. This was me and my siblings trying to sneak away with food to reach our room, only for our father to catch us then ran after us like Donald.
Oh my gosh, I just remembered the darkest episode of Hey Arnold. There were a lot of them, but the one with the ghost train was by far one of the freakiest things I ever saw growing up, even including Courage the Cowardly Dog.
I kinda remember this one. But I think the one Donald cartoon that's always gonna stand out to me is the snowball fight.
I think the reason for the uncle-nephews dynamic is so they could have Donald in cartoons with or without them

There's folks saying that ducks are no closer to turkeys/chickens than humans are to bovine.
Chalk that up to Disney's rule about how Mickey, Donald, and Goofy should never exhibit animal characteristics. The idea is that the audience finds them more identifiable if, for all intents and purposes, they act exactly like human characters would. So you never see Mickey eating cheese, or Donald flying, or anything like that. And occasionally, you get weird little carnivorous moments like this 😆

I am glad they did eventually introduce the nephews' mom in the new Ducktales. Granted, we've been waiting however long, but it's good to know Donald isn't the only family those three have.
The name of the cartoon is “Play Safe”. It’s about this little kid that plays on the train tracks, gets knocked out and enters this dream world where he plays around with this sentient train that nearly kills him. His pet dog saves him by getting him off the tracks in time before an ACTUAL train runs him over. There’s a lot of dark and creative imagery in the whole dream sequence, especially in the designs of the trains, the mountains, and the stalagmites in the caves. If this cartoon’s been requested already or if you already know about this cartoon, either way, just glad I get the word out. As a fan and lover of the art of animation, keep up with the series!🤘🤘🤘
Also a dark thought, let us all take a moment to consider that Donald made no attempt to flee from the falling boulder. Nope, he just closed his eyes and resigned himself to death XD
Oh, I finally GOT ONE! Does anyone remember Mr Meaty?! Only three episodes in my mind stand out but only two of them are actually dark in some way. “Moochmaster P.” And “Nosferateens.”

Yes. I did and I liked it and it just goes to show that the boys are not one hundred percent angels and that Donald isn't always the antagonist. While most of their early appearances tend to depict the boys in a more innocent light, I think you'll find that in later episodes that they developed to be more antagonistic than with what we first saw.

Honestly I like seeing Donald as the care taker of the nephews. I love what they did in the 2017 reboot and how he came to take care of them. I see them as the boy's father. The triplets are a handful, and both approaches the angry uncle and the over protective father and how sometimes he snaps and gets mad at them make sense.
The Old Army Game is another one in which Donald was in, what he thought was, a fatal accident.

I sugest you watch The Powerpuff Girls episode: Tough Love. Is not as dark as Speed Demons, but there's a moment where the music and the animation makes it so dark and threatening, is really cool

I know it is a movie, but you should look into Pinnochio and the Emperor of the Night. Its a kind of sequel to the original Pinnochio. It is relatively tame, but you need to see one scene where Pinnochio is turned back into a puppet. Creepy, even scary as hell.

You should really do 'Dumbbell of the Yukon', that's truly dark from the way Donald tried to kill the bear cub for its fur Donald wants to give to Daisy as a fur coat, to Donald actually getting hung with the noose meant for the bear cub.

I know Scooby-Doo is all about comedy and horror for kids but I this this episode is a cut above the rest in terms of creepy.

It was one of my favs. Clever how they made a dummy of Donald. One cartoon that was dark for me was "CHEW CHEW BABY", a classic Noveltoon where a man invites a pygmy cannibal to his home.
I remember there being a Loony Toons cartoon with the two rat characters (The one that says 'yeh yeh, sure sure' and 'riot' was one of them) tricking a cat into thinking he was sick and operating on him, and then tricking him into thinking he died during the operation.

Always thought they made the boys nephews to explain why they're not around all the time. If Donald was the father they'd have to explain why Hewy, Dewy and Lewy are not around when an episode is just on him.
Didn’t know it was a single episode. I had a Disney vhs called Kids is kids where it had episodes of Donald Duck cartoons where Ludwig Von Drake studying Donald. Same cartoon but has Von Drake in it. Funny part is when Donald saying goodbye and the nephews saying goodbye. Von Drake say to Donald “Goodbye sucker.”
That was an episode of The Wonderful World of Disney. It was a compilation of Donald Duck cartoons with the Ludwig Von Drake parts added on as linking material.

I first saw this one in a compilation overview with Ludwig Von Drake watching the psychological development of Donald and the Triplets with other shorts. When Donald is waving goodbye and the boys are mocking him as he rises with their insincere waves, they cut to Von Drake waving and saying 'Zo Long, Zucker!'. Remember, those boys started their appearances with a note from their mother saying how they had placed a firecracker beneath their father's chair, hospitalizing him.
I feel like I have watched it, even though I don't remember. Several of those scenes just seem to be ringing bells.

I think I saw this cartoon clipped and repackaged on TV when I was a kid, and I think it was also played on a reel at the end of the dark tunnel at my moms eye clinic. I didn’t really give much thought to it when I was so little, but I guess I’m not surprised that I never saw it in the years following.

I always loved baths and thunderstorms as a kid. I also enjoyed reading and quiet time, I even made friends with the teachers and staff. In short I was a weird kid with no friends my own age. In other words I had an awesome childhood
Damn this took me way back to when my late mom used to buy me all the classic Disney toons...this was a favorite of mine! Way to go Rob and Doug!
"Dead Duck" from Darkwing Duck, easily its darkest and saddest episode. Bonus points for having Tony Jay voice Death.
