Darkwing Duck is an American animated superhero comedy television series produced by Disney Television Animation (formerly Walt Disney Television Animation) that first ran from 1991 to 1992 on both the syndicated programming block The Disney Afternoon and Saturday mornings on ABC. Eventually, the banned episode of Darkwing Duck. The one where Goslin sells his soul.
Teen Titans go slumber party it has to be a future dark toons episode.
I never thought of Darkwing Duck as incompetent. He's accident prone, and his ego and pride are huge. However, when he gets his vices under control, he's quite capable.
That was actually part of the story that Old Launchpad told Goslen. When DW snaps out of his funk and gets back into crime fighting, without distractions he is so competent and efficient he wipes out his entire rogues gallery in one go.
Well in TVTropes there is a trope named in honor of his catchphrase called “Let’s Get Dangerous” that talks exactly about that.
I think of him as a better Inspector Gadget. Goofy, but not useless. Likewise Goslyn is capable, but not a Mary Sue like Penny.

Yeah, Darkwing Duck could actually be quite badass at times. He wasn't your usual goofy superhero parody. Sometimes, he could be extremely clever.

I love how this episode shows how much Darkwing cares for his daughter. There was genuine love when it showed how badly Gosalyn "running away" affected him. I really like the parent-child dynamic in stories, especially when they aren't blood related.
I just kinda thought Darkwing and Launchpad's thinking that Gosalyn ran away was a _bit muddied._ Maybe if they thought Megavolt and/or Quackerjack _killed_ Gosalyn it'd make sense for Darkwing to just go insane because the crime of St. Canard cost him his daughter, so it got personal for him. But that's just my two cents.

I agree. What probably happened was that the writers wanted to do that, but Disney said no to keep it "kid-friendly." The episode was already pretty dark.

@@rogue7723 that would've made more sense for Launchpad and Darkwing Duck to believe that Goslyn had been killed instead of believing that she ran away. In the cartoon Dark Warrior Duck was treating the citizens like a disciplinarian parent to his children.

Dead Duck is the Darkwing episode that stuck with me. Darkwing dies, returns as a ghost, and is hunted by Death who is voiced by the legendary Tony Jay.
Of course it's all a dream with a lesson about wearing your helmet, but disconcerting none-the-less.
This was one that has always stuck with me, as well. It was kind of shocking as a kid.
@@sj4iy It seems like it stuck with DW too, considering after that episode he would switch his hat with the helmet when riding the Ratcatcher.
I found this episode more sad than scary seeing how someone can be destroyed losing a loved one especially a child
a very realistic type of situation for sure.

I feel like I remember that moment the most in this episode next to the two wanting this top. So it was great it was shown here. Makes sense that he'd say that line in the other episodes but I can't remember which ones other than this

"Twin Beaks" was another fun, dark Darkwing Duck episode where we get a blend of Twin Peaks and Invasion of the Body Snatchers--oh and Bushroot's "dead" body!
Fun fact: An earlier version of this show was originally going to be called "Double-O-Ducks", based on DuckTales (1987) season one, episode forty-eight, "Double-O-Duck". This idea was scrapped, as it turned out that "Double-O" was a copyrighted name
Huh, that's interesting. There's a Disney COMIC BOOK character called "O.O. Duck" who preceeds Ducktales by quite a lot of years, I assume he was probably originally meant to be called Double-O Duck as well but had to be renamed because of this.
They have a Double O duck episode in the Ducktales reboot, it's pretty good. Launchpad is smart and Scrooge goes overboard with a skee ball game.
I think there's an episode of DuckTales (2017) with a title like that.
There's an episode where Drake has, I don't know, an identity crisis or something. Or he's trying to adopt a new and different image. I forget the specifics. But one of the identities he considers is a James Bond motif and he refers to himself as "Double-O Duck."
Thats also the reason there are so many SHUSH agent episodes by the way, where Darkwing always felt kinda shoehorned in.
I loved Darkwing Duck as an eight year old girl, and now I can watch it on Disney+ as an adult.

When I first learned to drive, every time I saw a jaywalker cross in front of me, I heard Dark Warrior Duck’s voice chastised them in my head lol!! I still hear it whenever I deal with them!!
I wish he would come to my hometown. The crosswalks are not very far apart and A LOT of people cross in the middle of the road.
How about "Life, The Negaverse, and Everything." When Darkwing follow Negaduck into the Negaverse where everyone are their opposite.
I brought that one up some time ago, and then gave it a rewatch. Admittedly, it's not as dark as this one. I had forgotten how much they sent the main character off the rails in Time and Punishment.
Life, The Negaverse, and Everything is more fridge horror...they depict a terrible universe, but not that much darkness on their own. It becomes much darker once our imaginations expand upon the concept...what day to day life would be like, how Negaduck likely abuses alt-Gosalyn, etc.
How about the episode “Dead Duck” ?
Or any episode with Negaduck in it, really - given his extreme violent nature and the many deadly weapons at his disposal.
I'd say the fact that Darkwing cares deeply for Gosalyn is something established in the very first episode and is a consistent theme throughout the series (and the best way to get Darkwing "get dangerous" is to threaten Gosalyn). This episode just carries it to its logical extreme.

Heheh... that's actually a really good analogy, given Megavolt's powers and all.
Kinda funny that he says "in any other universe Darkwing would probably be the villain" when that has happened both in with Negaduck and in the Ducktales Reboot were the actor that played Darkwing in that world's version of the show becomes Negaduck.
I saw this episode growing up. At that age, I didn't pick up on any of the satire but it comes in loud and clear as an adult, which goes to show how good the writing was.
The Christmas episode is one that has some good satire and is one of my favorite episodes.
"I am the jackal that gnaws at your bones. *guy tries to leave and darkwarrior duck shoots at him* I'm not finished." Best line of this episode by far. I loved this show because it made fun of Batman in a good way :)
Drake Mallard is the terror that flaps in the night, and I loved this show in its entirety
Megavolt was always my favorite name for electric based villain, straight to the point and great sounding.
Megavolt is truly up there in terms of supervillians.
He even created Negaduck, what other villain in comic books have created the Arch-nemesis of the hero?
Seeing what dark and twisted form a hero can take makes the audience appreciate and anticipate the moral decisions that character makes all the more. Especially when the/a temptation to go down that dark route appears.
Now I have an urge to see him do "The Duck Knight Returns" from the Ducktales reboot.
And don't forget the banned episode where Gosalyn sold Darkwing Duck's soul to the Devil in exchange for magic powers in the Season 3 episode Hot Spells

@@darknessrising2453 Yes, it truly did. It's a banned episode simply because the Devil is featured heavily in it as the main villain--and yet, he also appears in a few other episodes in a smaller role.

I remember watching this as a kid. At first, I was troubled seeing Darkwing as so menacing and cruel. But when I realized he was doing this because he thought he lost Gosalyn, I felt so sad for him. Never thought it justified what he was doing, but showed the depths of how much one person can love another, especially family. It was honestly one of the episodes I remembered the most because of this.
*How about the episode of Gargoyles called "Future Tense" where Elisa, Goliath, Angela, and Bronx go 40 years into the future and everything is terrible and dark. I remember Broadway came out and he was blind and that whole episode was just insane*

I still wanna see Doug tackle the episode "Haunted" from Teen Titans. Yeah, that show was geared towards older audiences, but for a show that typically aped anime tropes and styles, the episode was still dark and sad at the same time.
This is definitely one of the most memorable episode of the series...It really made me fall in love with Gosalyn as a character...

3:48 It's a general "iconic" rogues gallery. Megavolt is Darkwing's main villain because they're opposites: Megavolt wants more lighting and electricity while Darkwing operates from the shadows and smoke. Having a popular superpower was secondary for him.
Man did I love the Disney afternoons. Darkwing Duck was always my favorite, probably because of Batman '89. I grew up watching this, Duck Tails, Rescue Rangers and Tailspin every day after school with a peanut butter sandwich and glass of milk in hand.
I never thought a duck could be so funny and scary at the same time.

Well, you haven't seen the show Legend of the Three Caballeros. Donald Duck DIES in an episode and must fight DEMON DUCKS to escape the underworld. It's as awesome as it sounds.

@@OmegaChance27 Darkwing Duck would be three from the nineties, with Ducktales as second and Gargoyles as number one. Also, when are we going to get a Dark Toons episode on Deadly Force? I don't care if this show focuses more on younger shows, an episode with a character played by Patrick The Star, shooting one of the main characters and a creature going on a rampage in vengence deserves an episode on Dark Toons.

This was by far one of my favorite Episodes in the entire series. I loved how it was gritty and tragic, yet still held on to it's zany comedic tone. It also really solidified Drake and Gosalyns relationship.
Fan Fact: Megavolt is actually based on Marvel's Electro, an enemy of Spider-Man. In fact, most of Darkwing Duck's enemies are mostly parodies of Batman & Spider-Man foes (like Liquidator, who was based on Spider-Man enemy Hydro-Man)!
They've actually made a Darkwing Duck comic called "The Duck Knight returns".
It was the very first comic of the Darkwing Duck reboot comic series. Heavily inspired by Frank Miller's run on Batman.
That comic series was excellent. It was very close to the actual show and had tons of Disney Easter eggs in it.
That Teen Titans episode where Starfire jumps into the future to find the Titans split and the world in turmoil.

I always thought that episode was more gloom than dark.
Haunted (robin fighting "slade"), Beast within and spellbound were certainly a lot darker, with spellbound (Raven being mainpulated by a false profile) and Beastwithin with beastboy dealing with anger issues and some creepy moments from adonis.
Personally I think spellbound is the darkest one for it's relatable theme of being scammed/exploited by a fake profile.
This is the best episode, and the most memorable one.
One scene I remember after all these years, was when they had to go to Disneyland for some reason, but the guard wouldn't let him in, cause he never heard of a Darkwing Duck, so he had to cosplay as Donald Duck, which may have hurt his ego.

That episode is actually almost in danger of becoming lost due to Disney never giving it a re-release.
The odd thing is, the finally released Vol. 3 of _Talespin_ had both of the naughty episodes that Disney+ likes to omit so I wonder had Disney been willing to finish _Darkwing_ would the next volume or two included such an episode? The DVDs thankfully didn’t have any of the Toon Disney edits in them either so I have to believe we could have gotten lucky with this show too.
Darkwing Ducks catchphrase is based on the Shadows catchphrase, 'Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?' Even his scarf and slouch hat is based on the Shadows outfit.
I never knew all the parodies but definitely saw this awesome episode.

Bonkers had that dark episode that was actually banned after the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 but did have significance because it was the end of Lucky being Bonkers' partner and the beginning of Miranda being his partner

What I loved was the episode inspired me to do my own stories.
Always was one of my favorites as a kid. It’s interesting how the point of the episode (not that I knew anything about that stuff as a kid) was to lampoon the over the top darker and edgier reimaginings of classic comic book superheroes to make them “cooler with the teens” or whatever and showing how ridiculous it was. As an adult I can really appreciate all that, but as a kid, I just thought Darkwing was super cool in this episode! Lolol
Darkwing Duck was always my favorite Disney show growing up. Followed by Duck Tales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, and Aladdin.
This was one of my favorite DW episodes. Although you cut out my favorite part.. when he pulls the gun on Gosalyn at first there's no missile and she tells him she's not afraid of his gas gun. Then he says he got rid of the gas gun a long time ago and THEN sends out the missile. So the weapon that used to solely incapacitate now kills.
Now that the Ducktales review is over, you should do a review of the series in general! Would be great to hear your opinion!

I remember seeing this around the time it first aired. I loved the alternate history/future aspect of it and not long afterwards realized how much I enjoyed time travel and what-if stories. From here I remember watching BTTF for the first time, and later in the decade the TV show Sliders, all of which I enjoyed.

I know technically it's a scene from a movie, but it's pretty dark in both the animation, voice acting and music, and I don't know ANYBODY who wasn't scared of Gollum in that!
god i loved this series, Darkwing Duck never came off as a "Batman Knockoff" like some of the haters called it, it definitely drew inspiration from Batman, quite heavily i might add, but it never went without the quirky sense of humor it had.

I love love love how much darker 90s toons was.
'Negaduck' (the one where Darkwing gets split in two ) is my favorite episode. The darkest moments came later during Gargoyles, especially whenever Demona showed up and straight up murdered people. Can't wait to see if you cover some of those episodes.
That is one of the few episodes I remembered seeing as a child and got creeped out at the negative colored, pure evil version.
Speaking of Superman, I think you should do a Nostalgia Critic of Superman: Red Son. There's some pretty twisted stuff in it, like Superior Man getting mutated by an overdose of electricity, and the Soviet Batman blowing himself up with a hand grenade after bombing a museum. (The graphic novel is a great read too).
The animated version of the graphic novel was surprisingly better than I thought it would be

I love how it shows what happens when Darkwing goes into “Let’s get dangerous mode” 24/7, people stop treating him like a joke and are genuinely scared of him.

I remember watching this when it came out and it made me wonder what happened to all the other superheroes in that world like Gizmoduck or Steggmutt or even Morgana.

I've got a recommendation for Dark Toons: the episode "The KO Trap" from OK KO Let's be Heroes. That episode has the main characters first going slowly insane because they're trapped inside a small room and then later we find out that the main villain, Professor Venomous, was trying to psychologically traumatize them by murdering goo clones of themselves so he could dissect them. And also, the goo clones were apparently sentient with their own memories and a soul.
It's a really dark episode of OK KO Let's be Heroes and I think you should cover it on Dark Toons, Doug.
One of my favourite cartoons growing up, I loved the fast paced humour and clever wordplay. This show taught me fun with alliteration.

Disney Afternoon. This never aired on The WB; it wouldn't have, since it's owned by Disney. More than likely it aired locally on a station in your area which was a WB affiliate at the time.

This ep is VERY similar to the "Future Tense" episode of Gargoyles, where Xanatos has turned Manhattan into a militarized city state and it's a dystopian nightmare much like this episode.
