    About Olive Oyl being her own character--she actually predates Popeye by ten years.
    She was a regular character in Segar's Thimble Theater comic strip that was popular at the time. Olive Oyl already had a fully formed personality, backstory, family, and supporting cast before Popeye was introduced. So it's no surprise they retained a lot of that--and used it to good comic effect--when she was translated into animation for the Popeye cartoons.
    EDIT: I also just realized that she was created in 1919, which means that as of this writing (2020) Olive Oyl is 101 years old as a character.

    The most stick-out “gun to the head” joke to me was when Penelope Pussycat locked herself behind glass and Pépé Le Pew kept telling her to come out but she refused. He suddenly looked forlorn, waved goodbye and walked offscreen holding a gun to his head. Penelope heard a gunshot and raced out from behind the glass only for Pépé to be waiting there happily; he said “I missed! Lucky for you”
    also kinda fucked up that later in that SAME short Penelope tried to escape out a window and Pépé thought she was trying to kill herself to prove her love for him, and while he did try to stop her, he was like “oh that’s sweet but you don’t have to” about it instead of actually being worried.

      @motodog242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Meh, it works out in the end for the suicidal duckling, if he does it, he'll just say near the same things he said in this one. Suicide was a humor topic back then, has the same motive of never being wanted, Jerry tries to help with fashion, Tom wants to eat him then doesn't when the chase is taken out, duckling finds a cross-dressing duckling that thinks he's cute, the end.
      Side note: I started describing another episode since it was near identical. The one where Tom steals a duck egg to cook, the duckling pops out and sees Tom as his Mom, Tom starts wanting to make duck-like dishes, duckling finds out he's not wanted by Tom, tries to commit suicide to make Tom happy, Tom's motherly instincts come out, adopted the duckling as his own, the end. Hilariously, Jerry served no purpose in either of these episodes.

      I always got mad at that ending, especially since it was played off as happy that Tom got killed. Usually Jerry shows at least a little pity for him, but there he was happy abt it. Sometimes Tom comes off too sympathetic for me to be happy abt him losing in the end, and that was one of the cruelest endings toward him

      I have heard about a new Popeye series called "Popeye's Island Adventure" where Popeye has a whistle instead of a pipe, his spinach gives him different abilities and Bluto tries to steal his spinach more than Olive Oyl, who now helps Popeye defeat Bluto rather than be the damsel in distress.

    Fleischer and Famous studios always had the darkest cartoons among the old major studio releases. But the early Famous B&W efforts also have really sharp timing, almost on the level of the 1942-43 Warners cartoons that makes the gags (including the final one here) even funnier. Too bad they lost that shortly after the studio moved back from Miami to New York.
