Really had me going there for a second, Joe. Didn’t think you’d show us Dragon Valor… I was ready to click off when you said “pshhhh, I’m not going to tell you!” then BAM! You showed us!!!
I remember my parents taking me on a caravan holiday to rainy Wales. Luckily I had the forethought to bring my MD and a copy of Beyond Oasis (Story of Thor) and it ended up being an absolute banger. Great game.
Funny you mention that, I was actually thinking Genji (the first game on PS2 not its sequel the meme'd to death PS3 launch game) should be featured in this video too. It's a beautiful game with nice combat similar Onimusha but with jump button. The only negative is that the game is way too short. Thanks to that crab meme, Genji will be forever associated with PS3 launch woes and the original game in PS2 forgotten.
I'm a 40 year old man that loves spending sunday mornings eating cereals while watching Game Sack. Mentioned cereals are low on sugar and high on fibers, of course. And low fat yoghurt instead of milk.. Anyways, you get the point.
About Streets of Rage 3, there was an interview in a german magazine with the sister of Yuzo Koshiro, who worked on the sprites and design of Ancient games and she said, that they did not work on SoR3. Sega took that one inhouse.
Fun fact: In the options menu for Final Fight 3, there's something called "Hit Config." For reasons passing understanding, it defaults to on, but if you turn it off, you can't hit each other in 2P anymore.
To sound like an old fart, back in the day this was often "2P mode B" in Double Dragon and Battletoads... And also Battletoads and Double Dragon, among others.
Great stuff as always Joe! I feel like Extreme-G for the N64 is a pretty fun futuristic racer that gets overlooked when compared to the Wipeouts of the era. It has a great sense of style, speed and a bangin soundtrack. Not the best game in the genre, but very quality stuff and not one I hear talked about a lot these days.
My friend had an N64 and most of the games available at the time and that was the game he ALWAYS wanted to play when friends were over...we all loved playing multiplayer. I haven't really played it since then, though.
I don't think Bloody Roar is overlooked. People generally love the first two especially at retro gaming stores. BR just gets no love from the FGC, but they're only into a specific type of fighter.
I remember a little bit of Bloody Roar......3. I wanted to play as Alice because she could turn into a bunny. Unfortunately, said bunny was a hulking beast because that's Bloody Standard........3.
Beetle Adventure Racing on the N64 is a pretty fun game even that gets overlooked. I know I rented it four times before I finally bought it on clearance at some small game store. When I worked in a game store, we always had a couple in stock and they never sold. Customers would see the title and think it was another crappy licensed game. You can get it for around $20 nowadays.

Cyborg Hunter is awesome. I mean it has a peepee meter and you can simply just answer "yes" to the age-old question: Is he a cyborg that hunts or is he hunting cyborgs?
26:33 No emotion has ever been captured more accurately in a work of art than the "I don't want to be here" vibe portrayed on this box. Well done Sega!
Deeper in the game, with access to all moves, weapons and spirits, Legend of Oasis for the Saturn is something really special, like Beyond Oasis before it, the only thing it needed was a sequel later in the Saturn's life so it could turn into an amazing trilogy. In fact, all overhead SEGA games from Golvellius onwards are great games. I like how you can combo while dashing with Guy in Final Fight 3, it's also possible to moonwalk and double tap < while holding R to dodge attacks too, it's indeed a great game for the SNES, nice soundtrack but no much variety, and letterboxed like all Capcom games on the console, indeed the best FF game for me.
Growing up I would play Final Fight 1,2, and 3 all in one sitting on the snes. Good times! I'm still obsessed with the side scroller beat em ups. (and shmups)
Beyond Oasis is a great game. Collecting hearts buffs your health, collecting gems buffs your mana. You can use breakable weapons of different power, but there are also ways to get infinite powerful weapons if you pass a challenge. Maze-like dungeons, puzzle-like bosses. Some hidden mechanics like summoning spirits from enemies and inventory items. Very nice animations. One of my favourites. Happy to see it mentioned.
The ladies on the back of the Virtua Racing Deluxe box are truly "Out of this World".. as in, they look like they came from that game. 😅 Seriously the best thing about the Japanese release is the inclusion of SRAM so you can save your lap/track times and also keep mirror mode unlocked when you beat all the stages. Sega was insane removing this feature from the USA version, after having folks pay a $150 premium for the half-assed 32X addon and the high game prices on top of that.
So happy to see Skyblazer mentioned here. Definitely an awesome game with excellent gameplay mechanics and excellent graphic and sound design. I only wish it were longer!
Actually, I was just playing Virtua Racing Deluxe on 32X today. I got one of those all in one power supplies and had to make sure the 32X worked. Don't have the Japanese box though.
Another great episode. Thank you. One game I think deserves more love is Jurrasic Park on the Sega CD. It is one of my favorite point-and-click games and the production values are pretty impressive.
@@hellocollegejason198 I did at first but years later after playing it and appreciating it for what it was, it has become one of my favorite retro games.
A criminally under-rated but *excellent* game on the Saturn (mostly because it was a Japan only release and all the npc dialogue text etc is in Japanese) is *Princess Crown*
S.O.S. SNES is criminally underrated. Not the Sink or Swim S.O.S. Game, the other one with the Titanic looking ship on the box art. And Fur Fighters on Dreamcast and PS2 is also an underrated shooter game
Great work. Another overlooked game not a lot talk about is Adventure of Little Ralph for PS1. Maybe this channel has talked about it, I wouldn’t be surprised. Very fun game. Hard but addicting. You keep wanting to retry until you beat the level. Only takes a few hours to beat but worth the afternoon trying it and replaying it every year.
Joe, I've been following your channel for years now, never fails to entertain me Next episode of underrated games, I'd love if you'd bring up Threads of Fate from PS1. It's a Square Action RPG game that I only found out about last year. It plays almost like Dragon Valor, has two stories and an extremely funny plot with loads of gags. It's a beautiful game that no one talks about, you really should give it a look
So glad you mentioned Skyblazer, as it really doesn't get enough love! Though I think it's funny how you mentioned the game being difficult in spots and often frustrating, as I found it to be quite possibly the easiest 2D platformer I've ever played -- I rented it from BlockBuster back in the day, and literally beat the whole game on my first sitting. But I liked it enough that I went out and bought it afterward, so I could replay it again and again! Definitely didn't find any part of the game even the slightest bit challenging, though, nor was I ever frustrated for even a moment. If anything, it was kind of a relaxing game to play, since I could almost just zone out and beat the whole thing without even paying attention to it. I also think it's funny that you mention hating the stage with the wind currents, as that's -- again -- quite possibly one of my favorite stages in any 2D platformer, ever. I LOVE that there's not a single piece of solid ground in the entire stage, and you just have to ride wind currents to get to the exit -- it feels so freeing and fun, and is such a cool change of pace from other platformer games of the time!
Huge fan of Destiny of an Emperor on NES. I don't hear a lot of chatter about that one but it is a really enjoyable RPG type but instead of hp you have soldiers. There are tons of characters you can select from. So good.
The blonde-haired woman replacing the Borgman character in the western version of Cyborg Hunter looks kind of like she could be "anime Bonnie Tyler". I feel like Beyond Oasis is more accurately described as "formerly overlooked". It was obscure for over two decades but it's kind of hard to call any game included on the first Sega Genesis Mini and in the Sega Genesis section of Switch Online "overlooked" today.
Dragons valor… I played this game when it originally came out on PlayStation and absolutely loved it! I had always wished for a sequels but it never came. I didn’t know that it was related to an earlier series… great coverage Joe, Game Sack is awesome and honest, and the comedy in top notch lol
It’s nice to see Dragon Valor on here. I definitely enjoyed that game. I can’t recall if this game has ever been mentioned in a video, but Battle Hunter for the original PlayStation was a lot of fun.
My day always brightens up when there's new stuff from Joe. It's my favorite channel on TH-cam for a while now, and Joe, kudos for all the effort you put into your episodes. I came to really appreciate after watching the stream where you edited the MSX episode, and then when I got into editing my own stuff. It's a tough racket! Keep up the great work!
A few games that I feel go overlooked or under appreciated... Dynamite Headdy, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure, Contra Hard Corpse, and The Flintstones on the Genesis... Bomberman Online on the Dreamcast... Rhythm Thief on the 3DS... Totally Rad and Adventure Island 3 on the NES... Digimon Adventure on the PSP... And of course once again I bring up Penguin Adventure on the MSX.
Wurm really reminds me of Golgo 13 on the NES. Like Wurm, it had a lot of different play styles such as first person shooting, side scrolling shmup levels, and even dungeon crawling.
I still have the Wurm : Journey to the Center of the Earth game physically(original japanese version), i bought from Chinese merchandise early 2000's ...
There is a cool feature in Final Fight 3 that parts of the scenario are breakable. This open branching patches that leads to different bosses and stages.
I like to bring up Biker Mice From Mars on Snes when appropriate. It has a Rocking Soundtrack, and it shows the people who made it really cared to make it a great racing game. Also Vinny in that game with spinning around corners and using powerups can really go fast.
So happy to see Dragon Valor make it on... I feel that I made that rec a while back, since I'm one of the only people I know that talks about that game. A great selection of games on here!
Cyborg Hunter was really fun, back then it took me a while to figure out the inventory because I'd only rent it. Once I did I was hooked from start to finish, though I never destroyed the I D cards. Didn't even know that was possible
It's hard for me to imagine games flying under your radar with all the really good games you've shown me through the years that I never even knew existed. I even made a mameui playlist called GameSack that has all the games in your Left in the Arcade series
As far as criminally underrated games go, I would have to suggest the Way of the Samurai games on the PS2 / PS3. They are sandbox samurai games with a "choose your own adventure" twist with mild rogue like elements. I will admit when you first start playing you will likely feel lost as you are just kind of thrown in, and the controls are a little clunky, but after getting accustomed to it there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. Each run is relatively short, and even if you die and lose your stuff you are still gaining points to unlock cosmetics and game modes which keeps the momentum going. Highly recommend.
Silent Bomber for PS1 needs more love, super fun action game. I first played the demo of it in late 90's, and later found a copy of it at clearance sale and i couldn't put it down before i finished it. Highly recommended🥰.
"On the gweeeeen!" Just played it for the first time not too long ago, and it felt just like playing Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, even if the graphics are all 2D. I'm thinking I might pick it up for Xbox: I noticed that it's under the name "Big Tournament Golf" on modern platforms.
I had a game rental on my neighborhood back in the day, and I loved Beyond Oasis. Finished top to bottom in a single weekend, recommended to all my genesis buddies.

I LOVE WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth. The main theme has been my ringtone for forever now.
Silent Bomber for PS1 needs more love, super fun action game.
I first played the demo of it in late 90's, and later found a copy of it at clearance sale and i couldn't put it down before i finished it.
Highly recommended🥰.
Brawl brothers deserves to be on this list!!
Love this channel. Thanks Joe
Trojan on the NES should be covered.. early game and very underated
neo turfmasters is a really fun golf game for neogeo im not sure if its overlooked though but i never hear much about it
"On the gweeeeen!"
Just played it for the first time not too long ago, and it felt just like playing Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, even if the graphics are all 2D.
I'm thinking I might pick it up for Xbox: I noticed that it's under the name "Big Tournament Golf" on modern platforms.
Was just playing Dragon Valor yesterday! A memorable game from my childhood for sure
I had a game rental on my neighborhood back in the day, and I loved Beyond Oasis. Finished top to bottom in a single weekend, recommended to all my genesis buddies.
