- Hello Everyone. This is a video about handpainting with Amaco Velvet underglazes on flower-shaped spoonrests that I made with paper clay. (I don't recommend using paper clay for spoon rests, since I had quite a few crack in the bisque firing!) Instead, make sure to use a clay with grog in it, which will ensure a much higher success rate.
I will apply two coats of Zinc-Free Clear glaze over the underglaze, and then fire them to cone 5.
Hope you enjoy the video. And thank you for watching!!! :-) - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
your my favorite person to watch for pottery. Thanks for all you do. !!!
Awww, thank you so much! ❤️
Lisa, always LOVE your videos. Thank You for your inspiration, your laughter, your kittykats and your beautiful creations!
Awww, thank you so much! ❤️ 😀 And thanks for watching. Millie and Mollie love to see what's going on. 😀
Aloha Lisa, I have been enjoying your videos and you slow and easy style of teaching. Because of you I am now focusing on decorating rather than just dipping or pouring on glaze. You just answered my question about why you paint on bisque and not greenware. For me, painting underglaze on greenware gives me more options after it is bisqued and easier to do (imo). Mahalo for being such a great teacher!
Thank you so much. So happy you're exploring a new method of decorating and enjoying it. 😀 Thanks for watching.
You always have the most original designs! ❤️
Thanks! ❤️ 😀
Great video with some useful tips thrown in. You've given me some ideas, so thank you. Love the spoon tests 😍
Thank you! ❤️. Good luck with yours!! 😀
Love your laugh, makes me happy! My friend watched your video on making the bowls with the decorated rim and it inspired her to make one. It came out terrific. -Liana
Awww, thank you so much. ❤️ So happy her pottery piece came out so well. 🙂
Great video Lisa - what lovely spoon rests. I've made the regular round ones but these take the design a bit further. When it comes to clear glazing - the best advice I ever heard was when you said " don't brush hard, just float it on" I've done that every time and my underglazes have never smeared. So "float" is the magic word for me :) Thanks, yet again, Jan 💗
Yay, so glad it's working for you. Float away! 😀

They are so lovely, Lisa! I will have to start collecting the Amaco underglazes!
Thanks! 😀 I love the Amaco Velvet underglazes, but yeesh they are pricey!
So sorry things have been giving you a hard time lately, I hope it gets better soon. I enjoyed this video of the spoon rests, they’re adorable! Thanks for taking the time to record and post your videos, it’s always nice to spend some time with you.❤
Awww, thank you so much!! ❤️
Thank You for all the detail/clarification Lisa, I appreciate you!
Welcome!!! Thank you for watching! ❤️ 😀

Thank you!!! ❤️
Your words are coming out great, the right way, your apron reads right! So love watching all your videos 😊
Thank you for watching! ❤️ I was able to figure out how to flip the video. Yay! 🙂🙃
Gorgeous, as always. Thank you
Thank you. ❤️
Hi! Lisa, Great video, this is the third time I've watched it. I always enjoy the kitties. I appreciate your opinions on the underglazes, your glaze brush, and liner tool. The spoon rest design is so unique, I love it. Without the petal down, it would be a darling dessert dish.
Thanks Carolyn! ❤️ I've made them both ways, and love painting the flowers. I did not have a high success rate with these, though. I made about 20, and I think only like 10 didn't crack in the drying phase. I think part of it was probably the clay I used, and part of it was the deep cuts I made for the petals. I plan to make a new template, and make another batch. Thanks for watching!!! ❤️
And your name was the right way around on your xiem bottle, btw - happy days!
Thanks! Yes, I figured it out! 😀😃🙂🙃 I'm patting myself on the back for that one.
@@WildAcornsArtStudio and so you should - any techno achievement deserves a pat on the back. I use the xiem red bottle, I find the size suits my level of use and I also find that it starts running more after I've used it for a while, I wonder if it might be that the underglaze warms up from our hands and then starts to flow faster? Just my humble thoughts :)
@auroraskies8827 that's possible I guess. 🤔
great idea for spoon rest just lovely
Thank you! ❤️ After I loaded the kiln I realized I forgot to put them in! Ugh!! Hopefully I have time to fire them before my Pottery show.
You could have just added grog to the clay! I only use ungrogged stoneware for hand building and wheel throwing, never had issues, it's all about slow drying, compression and use little water
I don't use much water. I could have added grog I suppose, but didn't really want the mess or the intense wedging it would have taken to add grog to 25lbs of clay. The arthritis in my hands would have killed me. I would rather have thrown it in the garbage than go through that! 😀 Now maybe if I had a pugmill... 🤔 I always compress, even though most professional potters tell me that's a myth, and a waste of time. I still do it, though, because I feel like it does help finding any air pockets in the clay after running it through my slab roller. I really think it was the sharp indentations probably between the petals. And, I probably did dry them too soon. I'm so impatient when I have an art show coming up. 🙄 Oh well. Thanks for the input.
Perfact timing i needed a break from glazing, I know its crazy what these grocery stores are charging now, Some are talking about boycotting diffrant chains each month with their record profits here its nothing more then greed,
Yep, I agree. Inflation is crazy right now. 😞
I love the spoon rest! I also don’t like to paint on the clay. I like to paint on the bisque. You said that you bought the paper clay from a place in Seattle. I wonder if it was Seattle Pottery. I live a hour from Seattle Washington. Hope these spoon rest turn out for you 😊
Thank you! ❤️ I forgot to put the spoonrest in the kiln when I was loading it! Ugh! 😢 But they'll go in the next glaze firing, after the next bisque firing. Thanks for watching. I've heard Seattle is a beautiful city. My niece used to live there.
Hello! I recently found your videos and enjoy them. Maybe the screen is only flipped on your end. The words looked correct on this end.
Thanks! I was able to figure it out. 😀 Amazing. LOL.
A new question: What do you think about those LUG underglazes from Amaco? Liquid underglaze to be used on greenware for total coverage.
I buy those if they have the color I want. They are the best, in my opinion, because you don't need as many coats to get the coverage you want. (Living in Hawaii sounds awesome. I hope to visit there someday.) 😀
Hi. After you apply velvet underglaze to bisque, do you fire again before putting on the clear glaze (so the clear glaze would entail a 3rd firing)?
Hello! No, I apply the zinc-free clear glaze immediately over the dried underglaze. Some fire again before applying the clear glaze, but I find it a waste of time. I use a Mayco #8 Soft Fan Brush and apply the first coat gently, wait for it to dry, and then apply a second coat. I only apply two coats, but they are liberal coats. 😀
If I wanted to get better at painting my pottery would it be better to take a watercolor or acrylic class?
Acrylic painting is the closest to Underglaze painting because you usually paint from dark colors to light colors. (With watercolors, you paint from light to dark, and that doesn't work as well with underglazes.)
Thanks for watching!
I’m taking both classes and a pottery class too. So fun
I love your videos and these spoon holders are so cute ☺️ I have a quick question I use brush on glaze for earthenware clay and I find the colour doesn’t always come out very well. Would you say underglaze is better then brush on glaze ? I’m also finding the glaze is shivering at times? Thanks x
If yoir earthenware is the terracotta color, sometimes the darker coloring of the clay can throw off the color of the glazes. Maybe switch to a low-fire white clay. The colors are truer with the white clay. Shivering can be caused from various issues, but it's possible the glazes don't 'fit' the clay well. Meaning the clay could shrink at a different rate than the glaze as it's cooling in the kiln. It's hard to say. Do you wash your bisqueware before glazing?
Also, Stroke N Coats are wonderful glazes for earthenware. You might try those if you haven't already.
Thank you so much for your reply it’s really appreciated 🙏I do use a low fired white clay and both glazes and clay are supposed to be compatible 🙈but I don’t wash my bisque which I heard you mention about in your other videos I will definitely try this and hopefully this will make a difference. Thank you from a very rainy 🌧️Swansea in south wales 🏴 uk xx
@emmabaker8059 Wow, South Wales! It always amazes me where viewers are from. 😀 Thanks for watching. Good luck with your pottery.
Do you sell your template?
No, not right now. It's just a piece of cardboard. I'm going to change the template before I make them again. I'll do a demo.
