    MANUFACTURE DESCRIPTION :
    Tac-Bar is the only ration designed to perfectly fit into this standardized ammo can five at a time. Additionally, our 4 layer Mylar vacuum pouches have a thickness of 110 microns, the strongest around. Shipping, storage and deployment often damages food rations if they are not adequately protected, not a chance of that in our ammo can. Many prepper and tactical supplies are packaged in stackable ammo cans. Conforming to this system makes storage and deployment both practical and efficient. In a SHTF or extended tactical deployment scenario, food performance is paramount. There's lots to consider whether bugging in or out. Fact is, your body needs real food to perform at its peak and retain mental clarity. Tac-Bar has been engineered for a specific balance of calories, fats, carbohydrates, natural sugars, protein, vitamins and minerals to keep you operating at your best. There is no other food that can compare with Tac-Bar's daily recommended vitamin and mineral levels. Serious consideration to the physical size and weight of your provisions needs to be given. Tac-Bar is the highest calorie, vitamin & minerals combination per mass and volume around. There is no other ready to eat survival, emergency or tactical ration that contains real foods such as honey, oats or whey protein isolate. Tac Bar also requires no prep work, just snap off a piece and keep moving and stay alert. If you're using a vehicle to head to your bug-out location, just throw a Tac-Bar ammo can into it and you're set for a week for food (12,500cal) and water purification (10L). There is no silver bullet for survivalist food and no one wants to eat the same thing for extended periods. However, Tac-Bar has its place in any survivalists food plan. A free survival tin is now included, please visit the Tac-Bar website for more info on this and other great features of the Tac-Bar system.

    The TAC Bar is the first bar he has tested that is actually designed for SHTF purposes, hence the large amount of calories. During SHTF the average person will be burning much more than 2500 calories a day. The other bars are not designed for SHTF, they are designed for lifeboat or non moving, sedentary existence. The price may seem a bit steep, but you are getting enough bars for 5 days.... So, at less than 5 bucks a meal, not all that bad.

    Thanks for the review. I know the cost is much less per Tac Bar compared to the other brands. That $70 includes all the gadgets that I may not want. ammo can alone is about $5-8 dollars at a retail store.

    I think the Tac Bar is a fabulous concept. The killer for me is the price. This grossly exceeds my budget for anything other than a one of maybe, for a carry pack. My long term food plan can net the same quantity of calories for ~$3.00-$5.00, not $70.00! The inclusion of all the other nick knacks like the mini survival kit to me is not just a waste, it is actually harmful to the salability of the product, in that it inflates the price. The ammo can too I have to wonder, is there no other cheaper packaging option than what to me has to be one of the most expensive packaging options I have ever seen on any product, not just food rations? A simple plastic box, nothing fancy, might be a lot cheaper.
    Of course I could be completely wrong. It is possible that the producer has found a line on these boxes and pocket survival kits that is dirt cheap and leaving them out and going with a simpler packaging would not significantly affect the price. I would personally however go for a cheaper packaging minus the frills, just the ration bars, even if it only saved a little bit of money. I have my own storage and transport, I don't need to be hauling an oversized, overweight case with a handle, and I certainly don't want the extra weight of even more redundant gear. I want to stick rations in my pack, I don't want to carry them in my hand with a case handle.
    Having an oversized, overweight box in my pack is absolutely not an option. I would remove them from the case and frankly, likely discard the case. That then eliminates the structural protection of the tac bars, lowering their quality and life expectancy. So my options are crushed and possibly ruined rations, or an oversized, overweight box. Neither of those two options are good options. A much simpler plastic box that snugly holds the rations and nothing else, that is only strong enough to protect the integrity of the ration bars, would be in my mind both a cheaper option and far more practical for ration bars if meant to be carried. At the very least, come up with an option for both. A simpler, less heavy box without the extra survival kit gear that I would discard is actually a higher value to me than the current kit. How about a thin aluminum tin box that holds the bars sideways, with a removable lid. That could perhaps double as a container to boil water and the lid could be a pan.

      You are focused on the packaging. What about the higher quality taste and texture? Like buying dollar store fake chocolate vs a Luntz truffle.

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My 'post' focused on packaging because I see it as significantly inflating the cost while adding no value that I would not promptly discard. I would love to have a package of tac bars for a bugout bag or whatever, but I simply cannot afford that WHOPPING price tag. The price is massively inflated for me beyond that because I am Canadian; exchange rate + shipping + customs duty would turn a box of Tac Bars into nearly two hundred dollars for me.

    I just looked at the website and the F.A.Q's explain quite a lot of you question e.g flavour and why it's wrapped as one big block rather than 3 portions.
    Also they have removed the belt from the box and added a survival tin but your idea for the water bottle is better in my opinion.

    Nice set of videos. Thank you for doing these. I like what I saw, most especially the fact that they have no trans fats, unlike their competitors. The caffeine withdrawal problem is very easily solved by people including either caffeine tablets (very inexpensive) in their bugout bags, or by including products like 5 Hour Energy drinks. Therefore, I don't see this as an issue at all. This is simply food replacement, not caffeine replacement, but easily addressed for low cost. Again, thanks for these and all your valuable vids.

      Convar-7, conserve.de, individual wrapped approx 600 cal bars, with vitamins and minerals. Also come without vits/mins in moccachino and peanut flavours. Cheapest to buy in whole case. Also NRG-5, a bit dry and crumbly but quite nice both as dry biscuit or made into porridge with water. Also contains all necessary vitamins and minerals. Can also be obtained via conserve.de . Good firm to deal with and very quick delivery to UK by DPD. NRG-5 used to be my favoured block ration but the new Convar-7 is better now because of smaller packets and different flavours. Both types have 15-20 year shelf life.

    Tac Bar ammo cans would be a good emergency ration solution for anyone who travels regularly to rural remote areas. When I traveled to upstate NY for work this kit would have been perfect. I do agree that a smaller kit or individually wrapped bars would benefit more people. Nice job!

    No one does better reviews! One suggestion though: the $70 price was for the 5 day meal set and the other bars you compared were the price per bar. I think if you broke it down in this case at the price for 5 days worth of bars it would have seemed more fair to compare the bulk price of this.

    I cant remember which old MRE I saw it in. But there was one with the 1940 equivalent of a tac bar in it. Instead of adding different flavors, which it did in a way, it mainly had different ways of preparing them. The packaging itself could become a tray and it came with matches and a candle to heat the little tray. You could then add water and a beef bouillon cube to make a beed broth and mix the bar in it. Almost to make a beef porridge. You could also just roast the bar and add sugar. Or you could eat them plain.

  • @RandomButtonPusher
    @RandomButtonPusher 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, I agree that being able to buy the bars alone would be good, though this product seems aimed directly at those who don't want any DIY elements in their preparations: "Just sell it to me, I'll throw it in the closet or car trunk, and I'm prepared." But to do a fair cost comparison, you need to eliminate the cost of the container and the "gear" elements before you calculate cost per calorie -- bars to bars not bars to bars + add-ons. You could try pricing out the cost of the plastic ammo can and the other bits and bobs via Amazon or Walmart. A hassle to be sure, but the only accurate ways for a comparison is their kit compared to an equivalent kit you put together with the competing bars -- or subtract the cost of those items from the $70.

  • @SoCalPatriot81
    @SoCalPatriot81 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I TOTALLY agree with u about the unnecessary survival items in the can. if they left those things out & just kept the water purification tablets, it would probably lower the price $10.
    hopefully the owner watches this video.

  • @howardl5059
    @howardl5059 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you eliminate the extra stuff you'd have room for 6 bars instead of 5. A plastic or metal ammo can could be a 'deluxe' version. If you purchase just the bars a TAC-BAR decal could be included. This would allow me to store and label an ammo can I already own.

  • @shelle5112
    @shelle5112 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for the evaluation. I agree that the cost is a consideration but would be more of a concern if this were a staple of my diet. Given your review I've decided that TACBAR will be under the tree this year for each of my children's families as a fun way to supplement their 72 hour kits. Also, great idea to put the caffeine gum in with the bars. Wish I wouldn't need it, but I would.

  • @marchills4131
    @marchills4131 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done video review and thanks for taking another bullet for the team suffering through these 72 hour challenges. That can't be easy and really highlights the fact that while these emergency rations will keep you alive, they won't necessarily keep you happy. Mental outlook is not to be underestimated as a key survival concern. Also: your suggested improvements are very well thought out and are clearly borne of your experience actually using this product. One simple user upgrade would the addition of a few heavy duty, quart size zip lock baggies to the Tac Bar ammo box storage case. I saw you using baggies during the first three videos, but to truly make this a grab and go kit, having those in the kit will ensure a practical way to ration your calorie intake while preserving uneaten portions until the following day.

    You mentioned that you wished they had a water storage container in the TAC-Bar kit. Well they did the case it comes in IS a water container, you just need to figure out how much it holds. I would look into adding a seal though if you do have to use it that way, and maybe use it at half or three-quarters full.

  • @NGMonocrom
    @NGMonocrom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ouch! Looks like Tac-Bar wins out in every important category, except price. Since individual 2500 calorie packs cannot be ordered. Unfortunately, that's a HUGE category. I can see myself getting the Tac-Bar one time, and only once. Mainly to try out the accessory items and have an absolute last-ditch great-tasting E. ration. But will likely stick to the Datrex 2400 ration blocks. One block easily fits into a BOB pack.
    But a great overall review. So.... Subscribed.

    Hey Cliff! Strong work as usual! It seems that these really are 'lifeboat' rations given the accessories they include. Maybe they could add to their offering something along the lines of your suggestions for the broader land-based user, especially with a good quality flexible water container (although I think that would also be a great thing to have in a lifeboat situation).
    Completely agree with breaking up the big bars into meal-sized bars. Makes a lot of sense. My one thought about these sorts of rations is that, in my mind, they're intended for very dire emergency situations when you need solid sustenance just to survive. These would be last resort rations. So eating them repetitively might not be such an issue.
    Thanks for making the sacrifice for us in testing and eating these!

    70 bucks is pretty steep when you can get a while 12 pack of actual G.I. MREs with the good stuff like peanut butter and chicken w/ noodles for around the same price as this...BUT, the tiny packaging, small weight and insane daily values are arguably a fair price, especially if gotten yourself used to eating the total of 1/3 of that bar a day for a few days, and then it'd last a lot longer in a real SHTF situation.

    I was just wondering if it's actually fair to do a one-on-one comparison between the other ratiins and the tac bar!? In your comparison, could be more even to say either 2 of the other bars per day or half a Tac-Bar per day (equalizing a "meal"). They have a recommended usage, but you wouldn't have to eat them that way. Also, I wonder if the Tac-Bar (and others) are giving you a higher ratio of carbs than you're used to? Might relate to the difficulty you had at the end. Anyways, great job!

  • @Anvilshock
    @Anvilshock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Per meal" - Well, one, nobody forces you to just have one package per meal. Smaller packages help with rationing. But, more importantly, two, these are for absolute emergency survival, not for normal sustenance. Stay still, have little water, wait for rescue. Sure, 1200 kCal per day will not make you climb trees or fight sharks, and you will lose those love handles, but at least you'll live.

    I have concerns with you methodology . in comparing the other food bars, i assume that the other food bars did not come with any other accessories like the TAC bar, such as the ammo can and survival gear. I feel that this would be similar to comparing the travel cost of using a bus pass to the cost of hiring a chauffeured car to commute for the day around town. Also the calorie comparison, to be fair, would it not be more accurate if it were a calorie equivalent assessment cost. During your tests of the food bars, where you ever still hungry after each meal? Or lose weight? After eating the TACBAR did you feel the same level of hunger? Also with survival food, actually in any survival situation, to prolong your food stores, you would not and should not eat as normal, but rather, only eat when you became hungry and only eat as much that would satisfy that hunger. From experience, in any high stress situation, most people due to adrenalin or other neural chemical do not eat as often or as much.

    one thing I noticed almost all the survival food rations is that sugar is always the number one ingredient Or second

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sugar is among the highest possible concentration of calories. Given that the whole point of survival rations is to get an adequate quantity of calories to survive for a short period of time, with nutrition of very little concern frankly for that short term, loading survival rations with sugar makes a whole lot of sense. It also helps to make them slightly more palatable than they otherwise might be.
      There are survival rations that do not contain sugar. These are typically known as hardtack and have been used literally for millennia. They are basically extremely hard baked bread biscuits. Historically these have often been so hard as to break teeth, requiring that they be soaked in water or something so as to be able to be eaten. Modern survival rations are positively delicious in comparison to those historical hardtacks. That said, there are now much more palatable versions of hardtack available (not as hard as the older versions) and are in fact in very common use still in some places in the world, like Alaska, where they are used as a normal part of a lot of people's diet. Look up Sailor Boy Pilot Bread for example.

UST Emergency Food Ration Bar.I usually carry military MRE's in my trunk of my car during the winter.And I bought one of these to carry in the trunk of my car.

    I've only started getting into prepperism, but I've noticed a recurring theme amongst survival gear and foods that's really starting to cheese me off, this product included: the word "tactical". Because let's be honest here, >99% of anything branded "tactical" won't ever actually be used in a tactical situation. Now, I'm not saying that the goods won't be used ever, there's plenty of camping/survival/SHTF possibilities out there where "tactical" gear can find its' place, but that's not the same being as an all ghillied up army captain, which is the exact sort of image that marketers are trying to get you to think of when they brand their items as "tactical". They're peddling a fantasy.
    And the Tac-Bar suffers for it. $70 is a crazy high expense compared to similar products. They could easily make it cheaper, all they'd have to do is drop that pointless tacti-cool survival kit, because come on if you're buying Tac-Bars you most likely already have everything in there and then some. Further savings could be passed on to the consumer by making the packaging simpler at the cost of being less obnoxiously military, which isn't really a cost at all.

    Food rations could really up there game if the added flavors. If the intention is to have three meals a day, then there should be at least three different flavors.

    I appreciate your cost analysis, but you failed to factor out the cost of the extra products provided in the kit. If you had subtracted an estimated value of those things, you probably would have came out with a more favorable cost ratio. I agree, it would do better if they had a product choice of buying just the meal bars without the additional ammo can, tablets and supplies. Personally I like the idea of a packaged item to help simplify the logistics of gathering supplies, but I do not care of the "one size fits all" approach. What my needs, as a single personal are, vary greatly with yours as a family man, as well as my personal needs due to medical conditions, geographic and climatic conditions. Thanks for the overall review, and the comparison.

    Add some freezer bags for the leftovers and eat the TAC-BAR for breakfast and/or lunch. And eat a MRE or a Freeze Dried Dinner for dinner... Some Times I carry Instant Oatmeal for breakfast for a quick meal. Was your wife happy to see you loose some weight ? Would a .50 Cal. ammo can be better ? How would you set up your Tactical Food Rations in a .50 Cal. G.I. Ammo can ? And would it be for 72-Hours (three days) or a week in the one can ? Thank you for the video ! tjl

    and being double the calories of the rest of the ration bars you are comparing tac bars to is an unfair comparison if your really looking at it you should cut the bars to try and match the rest of the other bars and youll see a difference and then you look at the flavor difference and youd see what would be more beneficial if your doing a lot of work to survive compared to a relaxed day and to what you would prefer to eat

    • @22rered29
      @22rered29 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      81g of sugar per serving and 3 servings per packet!

      Keep in mind the high sugar content is because of the Honey that they use. It isn't added sugar. There is a big difference between the two. Also, sugar is an important part of your diet and necessary for your body to function properly. Don't get fixated on the Nutrional label, you need to look at the entire picture.

    • @IvorMektin1701
      @IvorMektin1701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike L
      Wrong wrong WRONG!
      Sugar, in any form, is completely unnecessary for human metabolism. Your liver produces plenty of glucose breaking down fats and proteins.
      The reason people eat sweets is because it packs on weight for winter and fruit ripens in autumn and the beehives are full.
      Starvation in winter/early spring is no longer an issue.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rich5562000 Actually, you're wrong. Sugar is necessary to the metabolism of your body. I think you need to actually learn how your body works because clearly you don't understand it. Your liver doesn't produce glucose. Your liver is a filter. Your Pancreas produces Insulin as well as other hormones. Your body uses sugar and other nutrients in Cellular Respiration to convert them to ATP (energy). Honey is one of the best foods because while it is extremely high in sugar content it is very stable and is slowly released, thus preventing sugar spikes. You can't look at a label and see that it contains 81g of sugar per serving and assume it is unhealthy. Like I said, you got to look at the whole picture. But what do I know, I'm only in the health profession after all.

    • @IvorMektin1701

      Wrong again.
      Health professional?
      And you're unfamiliar with neoglucogenesis? And I know what adenosine triphosphate is;)
      I suggest you watch Dr. Robert Lustig's lecture on fructose. "Sugar the bitter truth."
      Or any lecture from Gary Taubes.
      I'll post links if you don't want to search for the videos on TH-cam.
      Eat honey if you like the taste, but don't say it's healthy or nutritious.

    What is the shelf life?

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's printed as 5 years, but I think it will last a LOT longer. They have very tough restrictions with regard to what they can legally print as the shelf life.

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would surmise that the printed shelf life date is probably close with regard to the vitamin additions. Other survival rations have no such additions. I expect that the tac bar would last every bit as long as the other rations if you discounted the importance of the vitamins, meaning they'll still have the calories, etc., of the others after fifteen years, just perhaps not much in the way of extra vitamins.
