I am just a beginner, but what you say resonates strongly with my own moral compass. There is a gift; some people have it, some do not. There are myriad decks out there (wonderful!) and no one can have them all memorized, but an intuitive understanding of the *structure* of tarot is imperative. Start from there. Clarify with the resources at hand (like the book). Be open and honest with what you're doing. Build that trust; build that relationship with the querent. Pick up the pieces and tell a story. Create a learning experience for all parties. Each reading is a lesson! Blessed be (something I've gotten better saying to people telling me to have a blessed day, LOL).
Starting with the structure is a very important point! If you don't have the basics, you're definitely not ready to turn "pro"! and I heartily agree that every reading is a lesson. I remember realizing that every part of the process--from shuffling to laying out to interpretation--was part of the reading. Blessed be!
Thank you for sharing your own experiences. You have such a lovely and insightful approach 🖤🤓
You know, there's another video topic--is it alright to tell personal stories when you're reading for someone? Thank you and blessed be!
Thanks Luna this is very helpful. Oh I saw that rant too. 😂It all helps though, all the different approaches, and adapting them when relevant to your own style. I read tarot and it changes into a scrying type situation sometimes. I love it when that happens. 😄🐈⬛🐈🖤
Me too! There are moments that every reader dreads, when your mind just goes blank--and I learned that those are the magick moments. Things don't make sense, and you let it all go and then suddenly--DINGDINGDING--a clear picture comes through that is so far beyond the sum of the cards. So much fun!
I think that as long as you give a reading with good intent if you need to look something up for clarification for the good of the client, go for it. I'm a highly sensitive empath and totally relate to the crowd situation and the energy flying everywhere, creating a brain blank. LoL!
A fundamental knowledge of tarot is essential however, ie what each suit represents and all of that.
If you also read with oracle, well, we all know that each one is entirely different. I have over 100 decks now and there is no way that I have all of my oracles even remotely memorized. I read more intuitively than " by the book" .
I guess in my rambling, I'm trying to say, I agree with what you say ( I swear I took my meds today too). LoL! Always and never gets us into trouble every time. And to the person that did the rant ( I didn't see it but would love to) being a reader is a creative thing. Absolute rules kill creativity ( I'm an artist and writer as well so I know this to be true) and the crux of it all, I have enough to worry about doing my own readings without worrying about what anyone else does. As you say, a reader's integrity.
I hope all of that makes sense. LoL!! I'll go back to my corner now. Thank you Luna!
Hi Luna! What an interesting topic you seldom see around, so thanks for it !There are two fundamentals for me : the interaction between the cards in a reading, and the interaction between you and the "client" and why he is asking what he is asking, just the way you described it. Also the type of spread I use makes it "taylor made" for each customer, it can have 3 cards or more than 15... It becomes an unique and quite personal spread each time, and more often than not the customer's life story shows up in the spread As I feel really comfortable enough reading for others only with Marseille, I don't need a book 😉! But there are so many wonderful and different decks out there that it's almost impossible not to have a look at the book sometimes. I think that when you tell the customer why you want to look a card up, it shows honesty and dedication, and builds trust between the two of you. Thanks for sharing your experience, I would love to hear this more often!
I would love to know more about your process too! Do you watch any Marseille readers on TH-cam? I am realizing I've never known any and I'd like to watch some good ones.
Thank you❣️ You really made me 🤔 In many ways❤️
Never stop thinking! Maybe take some breaks now and then, though. LOL
Agreed Luna. Tarot guidebooks have their place, especially for beginners. How else would one learn?! I enjoyed hearing your stories from the Reading trenches of yore. Namaste 🙏🏼💙🌊✨🪶
And when we have incredible authors, it's a shame to apply the same rote meanings to every deck!
Thank you, Luna, this has been so instructive and useful...!!!!... I agree, the fairs are not a good place to make a successful and productive reading. I always prefer a private one, in a private place, with calm, and the possibility of center myself and offer the querent to do the same, so the reading will be the best we can receive from our guides.
Noise is a huge factor for many of us! The other side of that coin is that, when you have a whole bunch of readers--and I've done fairs with two dozen--the psychic and spiritual energies are very high, and so readings flow easily. And when you've done fairs for a while and there's a core group of readers that are all friends, it can be amazing! But my preference is always a quiet and calm atmosphere.
I read only for a few friends and family. Even if I am going it at home I trust what I see and go for it. I also use oracles in my readings. Sometimes I look for more info when it comes to oracles. In public, I would choose decks that I am familiar with... not because I think it is wrong to go for the book but to save some time and not break my train of thought. I never asked for money for my readings because of my health situation at the moment (I cannot promise when it is going to be ready). I watch the channel you mentioned and yes it is too much... but we can have an idea of other people's opinions and understand that if you use a book some people may think you are not a good reader. Another subject is all the videos people make showing cards just by saying how beautiful they are and card stock etc... the never even mention what that particular symbol is about. I think it is cool to go for the book and show us what the writer's intention was... after all you were not the writer or the artist. So, you do NOT have to know all about it! xxx
Again, it comes down to the gift. When I was reading professionally, I used Hanson-Roberts exclusively for several years. Then I started bringing Robin Wood if I was doing a psychic fair or Renn fair, and I would switch decks if I started going stale. A couple times, I tried letting the client pick the deck, but some people were afraid they'd pick the "wrong" deck--not a good frame of mind. Same with shuffling--too much insecurity comes up.
@TheZenWitch for my family and friends I usually get the centennial or light seers because I understand them well and fast like a flash I would get a deck I am studying. I am doing the drop78 challenge from Esther mindful tarot and I am studying the haindl tarot. Only now it has started talking to me... so I wouldn't be comfortable going for the book during a reading for somebody else.
I love your viewpoint.
Not a pro here. But how I proceed is I go with my instinct. If I feel like a super quick reading, I just lay out cards and see what comes out. If I feel like doing a one-card draw, but a deep one, with meditation, I will stay with the card for a while, and then look it up (particularly with oracle cards), and meditate with the card and text in mind. If I'm doing a bigger spread and drawing one card, my intuition tells me to look it up, I will, and I figure that means that the text matters as much as the card for that one... Messages come in all shapes and forms...
You just made me realize one a significant reason for using the book--when reading for oneself, it's easy to see what we want to see in the cards. More than that, when we really need answers on a specific issue, it's usually because there's something we're not seeing. When we read strictly intuitively, we can remain blind to what a card is trying to tell us, and we can either manipulate the meaning, or just feel confused. When you have a deck that you know works for you, looking up a meaning can help to open your eyes to what you weren't seeing. Especially when it's a deck that you know will slap you upside the head!
I think (but not sure) I know who you are talking about. :)
I'm sure you do.
