    we call it "shoulder recoil" . the key is to be extra extra loose, your arms, your shoulder and especially your fists. I developed shoulder recoil for left body uppercut first, then left hook, then right body uppercut, the most difficult was the right hook and although I can do it in shadowboxing - It just doesn't occur when I'm hitting heavybag or sparring (due to the tension which occurs, and I'm not still able to get rid of excessive tension)

    Awesome explanation. The idea of moving your body in the rotation and then stopping and allowing the momentum to flick your arm forward to get the snap was really eye opening. Great illustration with the car too. This really helped me get an understanding of getting the pop and snap particularly into my hooks and can't wait to try it out next training session. Thanks for the insight.

    hey my man, thanks for the props. no in straight punches you are trying to extend the shoulder forward, almost like rounding your back in a cat stretch while standing. full extension of the shoulder

    Hey tripleVVV3, just wanted to let you know that you are a teacher of the highest class. Your videos are always informative, not too simple and not too complicated. I got into the kickboxing game about a year ago and I am still trying to figure out how to use straight up boxing effectively without getting the shit kicked out of my legs. Anyways, thank you so much for your time and effort in teaching. Cheers!

    What you're teaching is difficult to put into words. But you're doing a good job! I learned how to punch like this awhile back and thought about applying the same technique to my hips too, and it worked (just like it does when doing leg kicks). Using both the hips to initiate the movement then the shoulder pop to finish makes for a quickly delivered and forcefully thrown punch with a brisk snap sound. It's actually fun to do and effortlessly repeatable. Good video!

    This morning my boxing coach told me about snapping shoulder while punching uppercut and hook. And he told me that in video call because we have online training session.
    Hearing it for first time, I barely understand what did he explained.
    Next, I did my own research and found this awesome video. None of other videos explaining accurately about shoulder snap like you do.
    Thank you Sir for helping me understand the concept. Peace.

    Your coach has the right idea, if he was to break down all this stuff to early you would end up doing the electric boogaloo. If you are boxing, just keep throwing lots of punches, stay relaxed, and turn your body into your shots. If you do all those things the looseness will come soon enough

    Great lesson! I had this technique down after a few years of regular practice, it eventually came naturally but I never actually analyzed it and cemented the form. After years of no practice I almost feel like I'm starting from scratch. Thanks to this lesson, the technique is cemented in my brain and I can get back into the swing of things. Big ups!

    See I'm a few months in now and starting to understand this part of the punch, especially from seeing professionals throwing with good pop and keeping their posture composed when it lands. It's definitely harder to do it with the left though since I've pretty much carried everything in my life with my left. Had a feeling it was all a matter of hard work though, thanks for clarifying!

  • @marklaska8358

    For a suggestion on what to do to avoid the shoulder pain in one of the questions, one of these 2 things might work.
    1. Warmup & stretch the shoulder. One stretch is to bend over and do arm circles; each circle gets bigger until any clicking or popping goes away. Also, I find that if you do rotations with your arm straight and in front of you then this helps to. You can use the other arm for support so you relax.
    2. Swimming. Doing some swimming like a crawl or a backstroke can help but do not over extend if there is an jury.

    • @marklaska8358
      @marklaska8358 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When doing the arm rotations, the idea is to alternate between the little finger and the thumb being on top.

    footwork in the shoe shine drill is not a big issue because you won't be fighting out of this position, however I dont think there is ever a good reason to have sloppy technique. Just make sure your feet are as wide as your shoulders or slightly wider and step your feet fast. If you are doing the shoe shine out of your stance you will just twist your body and not step your feet.

    You can pop your shoulder standing still. It's possible, I can do it. Took years of shadow boxing and practice but it is possible. I can also use the shoulder snap on a straight right.

      How? Like which drill u use do u have any links

    • @Reznick
      @Reznick 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The shoulder snap goes beyond just knowing how to do it. There is degrees to its effectiveness. When you really practice your shoulder snap, eventually you can use it any many different angles, including a straight right. Muhammad Ali's "phantom punch" was actually a shoulder snap straight right punch.
      He brings his right glove from his hips, over his shoulder, and fires it with tremendous power and speed.
      Try challenging yourself to throw exclusively shoulder snap punches. It will force you to become creative with your balance, weight, and with enough practice you will eventually be able to throw one straight.
      I can also throw a shoulder snap jab, but it's not useful, as it takes too long to throw.
      I learned how to punch by reading Joe Louis' "How to Box." Specifically his section on punching. He has a few training tips or nuances that no modern boxers really uses, such as always trying to throw your hardest punch in shadow boxing and on the bags. And then how to optimize the speed once you have the power.

    Hi JT, For me the pop came from using the speed bag. It seemed to develop naturally and quickly. I remember, after going to the gym for a while, my nose was itchy. I went to scratch it & my shoulder popped. I hit myself so hard my eyes watered. My girlfriend thought it was hilarious. I was also trained to make the heavy bag "jump, not swing". If the bag is jumping you're developing the "pop".

    I like the car/ passenger analogy, but might there not be more to it than that?
    Once your pectoral muscle is fully extended, I would have thought that it is more than just the release of elastic energy that pulls the arm and fist forward; there is also a positive contraction of the pectoral muscle (and of a chain of muscles down the body, including the opposite-side abdominal obliques and same-side femoral quadriceps, to augment torsion).
    (In running, for example, only about 50% of the energy used to push the foot off the ground comes from energy stored in the fascia of the lower leg during the impact/ loaded extension stage; the rest still comes from muscular contraction.)
    In fact, all this makes me think of plyometrics - loading a muscle in dynamic extension before reactively/ explosively contracting it, which generates more power than contraction from a static position.
    I also note in your demonstrations that your shoulder drops as the punch is launched. Is that because you are demonstrating uppercuts, or is it something that applies to all 'snapped' punches? I'm a but wary of trying to apply this too generally as my shoulders are not as resilient as they could be...
    Great videos by the way, thanks for making all this fantastic material available!

    The term is referred to as elastic recoil. What your not factoring in is that he used this as a demo to explain how to execute a specific punch (left hook). If you have watched any of his other vids, or have a legitimate knowledge base on boxing you would know that you set up shots with feints, fake entries, broken, rhythm, opposite or same side strikes, off the jab and from different angles and levels. You disguise your offence to kep them from reading your attacks.
