      I do not get it. If a 120 lb. guy snaps me with a super fast punch, it might hurt. If a 300 lb. guy, with a slower punch with huge power, lands one on my jaw, I am going down.

    • @BaptistJoshua
      @BaptistJoshua 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @J M your average 120 lb. man has less strength compared to a 300 lb. man. Strength is more important than form or technique or speed, I believe. I'd rather take a speeding leather strap to my face, than a sledgehammer.

    • @BaptistJoshua
      @BaptistJoshua 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @J M only if they have equal strength. That is not likely. I will take strength over speed any day. Of the two guys, whichever has the greater strength is the guy I would believe would win, barring glass jaws.

    • @BaptistJoshua

    This whole "pushing" the punches can get really confusing for beginners and I know because I've been there too.
    You start questioning: "what the hell does it mean I'm pushing the punches?" And can't get an answer.
    A pretty useful trick that worked for me was going a step behind your "think about speed when punching".
    That means I was thinking about making contact with the bag, and as soon as I felt an impact I would snap my hand back to neutral.
    When I got comfortable I started thinking about speed and then power, just like you said.

    When I was in a gym, just found some about 1-2 years boxing practicers still a little bit pushing their punches, though some even participated small amateur matches and sometimes got not bad achievement. Somehow I feel myself always be told that I have speed and skill, but also be told the soul of boxing is not enough. Using too much footwork and lacking to take risk. Dear Mr. Tony Jeffries, You´re right saying that punching with force quenches power and speed, matters most, as it bring power and some tactical edge over a stronger but slower opponent. Perhaps, pointing out the differences in the surfaces to be hit, i.e. applying a bit longer or shorter focus would also of worth trying. Best regards, Paul, 66, retired eionstructor of Gopju ryu Karate.

    Hey Tony what are your thoughts on Tyson fury punching his heavy bag I’ve seen him push into it

  • @drakedallas8074

    love the videos tony, they are really helping me with punching my local gyms bag! quick question. I'm using the gyms provided gloves when I do but my knuckles feel sore and almost swollen the next day. would you be able to point me in the right direction because I'm sure there's something I can do to prevent this. thanks in advance!

    • @wardog5537
      @wardog5537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the padding of the gloves provided by the gym, but it's also just about how hard you're punching it. Even with gloves, the bag can absolutely do damage to your knuckles. Just remember one of the laws of motion; for every action in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I would start off hitting hard at first, then going for more speed and less pressure the more you get into it. What I do, is one day out of the week, I actually hit the bag without any gloves as hard as I can. I don't last long lol, maybe two-four combos and I'm done lol, then I do the same as above and punch lighter but faster to condition them

      My advice is to always wear handwraps if you aren't already. Also, ditch the gloves provided by the gym and bring in your own pair. Those gloves provided by the gym aren't in top notch condition and usually lack padding.They aren't care for and gets passed around like a used condom.

    Correct me if I am wrong. Mike tyson was talking about going through your opponent when punching. It is like pushing trough when he threw punches. and going through fighters when he punched. But other trainers including you say don't do that So.. I am so confused 😕 please no offense I am really confused and need your help

    Anyone here knowing where it’s actually explained how to connect the “haymaker”/swing/high hook with the bag? No videos I’ve seen on TH-cam really explain in detail how to angle everything from the wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder and so forth. I struggle with connecting with a kinda slapping motion when throwing a swing and connect with the part between the first and second joint (first joint being right after the nails). I often also feel like I rarely connect with the knuckles in general. It feels like I connect with the whole part from knuckles to the next joint in the fingers.

    Hey man, I got a question. How do I about following through my punches without pushing them?

    • @qpeocn
      @qpeocn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Follow through by using your footwork and hip/pelvic rotation. You should be subtlely stepping into every punch. That's how you generate power.
